Bit niche request maybe but I'm looking for a non-D&D system where wizards lugging tomes around is mechanically important and represented.

Yeah in Eberron the contrast with how the shards are used in place of tomes really lends itself to a reason for why you would adventure. Its also a nice nod to Cugel mired and slopping through the muck for his hat ornament spatterlight.
