How do I convince people/GW drones at my LGS to play wargames that they aren't already invested into?
>>
>>98912070
get a job working there, that way you'll also get payed for it
>>
>>98912070
Make 2 demo armies that are well suited to a fun match and well painted.
Have a quick reference sheet for the game so its easy to explain and they can use it as they go.
Offer to play it with someone after a 40k match.
Be friendly and have a good time.
What game are you trying to get people into?
>>
>>98912070
You don't. Find people that are already willing to try out new stuff. Trying to trick or coerce people to try new things will more often then not result in wasted time and resentment.
>>
Where are you? Even though my local club is great I basically ignore it because it's all nuGW, went to a few indie events at the regional level and now that's like my main hobby friendship group even if I don't play weekly

You're never going to get a situation where you can just go to the LGS and find a stranger waiting to play Oathmark or DBM. Maybe that was GW's masterstroke, making people expect a CCG pickup game milieu for miniatures games. If you're interested in non-GW games you should get 2-4 friends to start at the same time you do and then the scene will grow from there when other people see you playing.

well there's my filter lmao

not OP but
>>98912094
>Offer to play it with someone after a 40k match.
I don't play 40k.
>What game are you trying to get people into?
battletech, quar, maybe bolt action. blood bowl is gw but is niche enough that I'd count it seperately
>>98912098
>Find people that are already willing to try out new stuff.
where?
>>98912106

where are you?

What if i don't have IRL friends because I'm a shut-in but tabletop gaming seems like a good way to break that habit and gain some friends, but I don't want to play 40k, AoS etc?
>>
>>98912189
Table ready is good enough, most of the time people are looking at the models from several feet away. It will likely work better if the paint is better though.
If the game has good mechanics or models or vibes or whatever really, making sure you can highlight its strengths.
>>
>>98912229
You're coming in with no connection, lacking having already played a game with them so that's harder.
Not saying start a 40k army to do that but if there's a Kill Team or specialist game that gets played more regularly the buyin is low and its already people who will be more interested in different games. That's how you make friends and get to talking about other games. If there's already Blood Bowl and you're interested in it that's another easy low buy in game with small group leagues as part of the deal.
Battletech might be our best bet from there. Battletech is easy to set up, having things like enough dice in different colours to track movement, plastic slip covers and erasable markers for record sheets to track damage and heat and keeping it intro tech will help. Haven't tried the new intro box but you can make a decent matchup with the old sets. I've found it helps do a 2v2 match to ease people into it or if you have a lot of models making tailored lances.
Quar is a special flavour of odd, quirky chungus ww1 anteaters is a harder pitch than giant fighting robots.
No experience at all with Bolt Action. Might be able to swing it around Remembrance Day or a WW2 movie getting big.

>>
>>98912440
What? I don't go out much and want a reason to go out more. Trying to fix this without getting into 40k, which is dogshit.
>>
>>98912070
be willing to play their alternative wargame first, and dont half ass it. Real interaction is whats required.
>>
>>98912539
>be willing to play their alternative wargame first

go on.
>>
>>98912520
You are making a problem so you can shut down. Get into MtG so you can play command at an LGS, or go to a local board game cafe on their singles mixer night or whatever, usually there is an extra guy sign up board, write your name down. You are not in the position to be choosy. So don’t be. So what other people want to do and shut the fuck up. That or do what >>98912094 suggested because it is sound enough. Don’t be an howie. Just go do it you fucking asshat. There, that’s three ways to get out of your house and make friends and have fun. If you don’t it’s totally on you.
>>
>>98912594
>Get into MtG so you can play command at an LGS
you cannot make me play MtG I'm not touching that shit
>go to a local board game cafe on their singles mixer night or whatever
not a terrible idea.
>That or do what >>98912094 # suggested because it is sound enough
this sounds fine.

so basically, putting it all together here, should I basically just participate in local board game nights while also maybe getting involved in the local kill team or blood bowl scenes, then start trying to demo other games?

>so basically, putting it all together here, should I basically just participate in local board game nights while also maybe getting involved in the local kill team or blood bowl scenes, then start trying to demo other games?
NTAYRT but yep that's a good approach. Might take some trial and error but it'll be okay.
>>
>>98912520
You lack friends because you're a cunt. No one should suffer having to play with you.
>>
>>98912782
someone not wanting to play 40k makes them a cunt?
>>
>>98912070
You're so heckin ""unique"" and ""special"" OP, do you jerk off about how much of a "not like other nerds" you are?
Retard

This OP, nobody is going to pay the upfront cost/work of buying and building an entirely new army for a ruleset they don't even know without playing it a couple of times first. Arguably I wouldn't even stop at a demo army, I would make two demo armies AND two full armies so that if they become interested beyond a quick demo game you can show them a full game as well. Playing a full game will probably attract more people too, and if you see literally anyone giving an inquisitive look at your game try to bring them into it and explain what's going on, how it's played, whatever. Then you can go "I can play a demo game with you sometime if you want" and continue the process over again. Be prepared for them to immediately back out at this point though and don't feel too bad about it, we've been conditioned to assume that people are trying to scam you if they like something too much.

we are going to kill your games, faggot. you're all miserable hipsters for not playing 40k and we're going to rip your games apart to make more room for 40k.
>>
>>98912070
What would it take you to start buying figures for a game you've never played before OP? Answer that and you'll be able to answer it for others.
>>
>>98912989
You won't do shit.
>>
>>98912798
Your inability to understand why your behaviour is objectionable is why you're a cunt, and why you will never be able to stop.
>>
>>98913093
how do I know my behavior is objectionable if the behavior in question is merely me self-isolating myself for years post-college?
>>
>>98912070
Buy and prep a second army, then offer anyone who takes your offer to play using your second army an offer to chip in on buying their own army.
Basically, be rich. Or, use some other website to find people who play the game that live near where you do.
>>
>>98912070
For a start you should probably stop thinking about the people you interact with as "drones" . Once you've got a handle on that you might be able to start positioning yourself as someone whose opinion is worth listening to.

You're fucked. Unless you find the rare unicorn lgs that plays battletech, or something, you either quit or learn to tolerate "competitive" 40k
Source: I tried that and just went back to vidya
>>
>>98913614
go on, tell your story, explain
>>
I understand your plight OP. My friend group fell apart with covid and I didn’t have any friends outside them (irl anyway), and I haven’t been able to find time to get out regularly (have a toddler and now a preemie baby)
>>
>>98913650
There's not much to it
>try to get friends to play 10th edition 40k
>they think its gay, but offer to play battletech instead
>have fun
>years later, move away and settled down
>decide to get out more and finally get proper into 40k
>find a flgs just in time for 11th, got to know people and even made and painted up a new army
>11th finally comes out
>they took everything I hated from, the few, previous games I played and made it the main game
>comp faggotry, pick up games are now just training for tournaments or whatever
>lose all motivation to paint or play
>just quietly leave
>>
>>98913763
Go find a battletech group you fag.

You can't lead people out of the cave unless you're someone the people in the cave perceive as being credible.
>>
>>98912606
Pretty much. Playing the games they want to play gives you the chance to suggest other games afterwards, and bringing two premade armies and some intro rules so that you can basically teach people the game is the easiest way to convince them to give it a shot.

Even if they don't buy in and make their own army, they might find it fun enough to keep playing matches with just what you have.

I've got a friend who does that with that Star Wars dogfighting minis game that came out a while back. Nobody he's playing with is gonna go out and buy their own ships, but he can usually find people willing to try it out with just his own ship collection.
