>""""classless"""" system>contains backgrounds that have stat bonuses
>>98912893>enemy vs. a stronger variant of the enemy that is just a different color
>>98912893What's the issue, exactly?
>>98912893It makes sense that it does. A miner should have different stats when compared to a pampered nobleman, for example.
>>98913467Sounds like miner and nobleman are different classes, then.
>>98913736A background in a classless system is just a package of abilities packed together to make sense, similar to a class. The difference is that you don't have to pick up that package to be able to buy those abilities.Like you can't mine without being a miner in a class-based system that would have miner as a class, but in a classless system, you could by a package of abilities called "miner" that had mining in it, but you could also just buy mining without spending points in the other stuff related to mining.

>>98913819>Stop being gurps-brainedI can't
>>98912893Name five>>98912954>>>/vrpg/ is that way, bot-kun
>>98912893>the "classless system" trend chasers are starting to catch on that the concept was always an illusion
>>98914174>/vrpg/ is that way, bot-kunLike D&D hasn't been doing the same thing for 50 years.
>>98914188>>the "classless system" trend chasers are starting to catch on that the concept was always an illusionWhat class-based game can I make a character that controls gravity as his sole power, not just as a single spell?
>>98913428he thinks a classless system means all characters need to be mechaincally identical i guess?
>>98914258Most space fantasy.Starfinder had a class with star themed guys whose power was expressed in either gravitational powers or radiant fire. They had a balance system where in combat you attune to one or the other, and swapping between the two took a couple turns. It was an interesting idea. Not sure they pulled it off. It was better to just pick one every time, and the gravity attunement was pretty good. I've seen other space fantasy do the same. Fantasy game makers forget the concept of gravity exists, but when it's in space suddenly they remember.
>>98914174your comment doesn't even make sense. everything is a bot for you cunts.
>>98914295>Literal video game meme and a blatant one>HURRR YOU ALWAYS SPOT BOTS
>>98914306so what? there's a reason it's a meme
>>98913805There's nothing keeping a class-based system from that sort of freedom, except for the specific developers of specific class-based systems.
>>98913428lol what is the sauce on this webm?
>>98914566Doctor Who, no idea which episode
>>98913736You don't understand what a class is in the context of a tabletop RPG.
>>98914566https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Curse_of_FenricI think the idea was that the weird vampiric creatures are repelled by symbols of faith. The Soviet soldier having faith in the cause gives the symbol power against the creatures. Or something like that.
>>98912893>>98914188>>98913736Retard.A class is a structure that PERMANENTLY limits what your character can be good at. Having bonuses is just how you fucking make an RPG.
>>98914558The whole point of classes is that they permanently stop you from doing things outside your class. They're pigeonholes that players are forced in. If you don't have that, you don't have classes.
>>98914922I can't tell if this idiot is saying he thinks that's the definition of a class, or if he doesn't understand the thing he's describing can happen in classless systems. Regardless that is such an incredibly fake nogame line in the sand to draw. I can't even think of a class based system where what he's talking about is true. Even DnD classes don't work like that. Fuck, that's how multiclassing works. You take a level in a class when you level up.What the fuck is this retard talking about. It's actually so stupid it's annoying.
>>98914931Name a game where this is true retard.
>>98914922>>98914931No, the purpose of classes is primarily the opposite in whitelist logic, giving the character things they can Just Do beyond the "baseline" functions whether mechanical or improvisatory. The things they "cannot" do are a matter of simple opportunity cost regarding such "non-standard" options growing with the scope of mechanics until it theoretically encompasses basically everything you "could" try to do, but by the time D&D got anywhere close it already picked up significant class-independent build resources and ways to start accessing other classes after character creation.Nothing stops you from having "classes" be just a guarantor of game-structure assumptions so that the end users on both sides of the screen don't have to consciously consider all the "floor" competencies while putting together weird blends of bullshit, especially when those floors are scaling up throughout a series of modules.
>>98912893The concept of a class doesn't imply just a different starting point but also different, at least partially pre-determined paths of progression. Backgrounds with mechanical impact aren't classes, and people pretending to not know what classes in RPGs even mean is starting to get really old.
>>98915424I vaguely remember a progressionless OSR game focused extensively on the turnover as "the point".
>>98912954Fpbp
>>98914931The point of a class isn't its limits, the point of a class is categorizing related abilities, magic, powers, skills, etc.D&D and its imitators being retarded at designing classes doesn't change that.
>>98913428The issue is you and people like >>98914270 who play games for "classless systems" and then immediately open the character creator and say>hmmm yes I'm going to make a WARRIOR this run unlike the DRUID I made last timeand then scroll through to find the Warrior background choice located between Rogue and Wizard before playing the game using exclusively those abilities because things not boosted by your background are highly non-optimal.
>>98915803you don't need a class to swing a sword, retard
>>98914258There's my setting but you need to be really lucky in your rolls while creating the character.>>98915803>because things not boosted by your background are highly non-optimal.That's wrong, you just need to invest xp in it. You won't be able to be broken instantly but it makes sense rp-wise.If you never swung a sword, you'll be shit at the beginning and only through experience or training could you gain more skill.
>>98915803People who prefer clear roles being able to play characters with clear roles is not by any stretch of imagination a problem with classless systems. What people want out of classless systems is flexibility, which obviously also means being able be a pure, dedicated warrior if that's what you want.
>>98912893And?
>>98915803The difference between a class system and a classless system is not the existence or absence of stereotypes.
>>98913805So, the category in this example is classified as mining; mining-class abilities you can buy.
>>98914294>Or radiant fireso it's not a class where I can only use gravity control
>>98912954Uncanny
>>98915803A few characters I've created over the decades:>tall, lanky bishie mobster with a maxed out cyber arm on the lam>goblin carpenter with a destiny of becoming a messiah one day>disgraced tiefling nobleman and an officer with a gambling addiction>dwarf diplomat who can talk your ear offI don't even remember which of those systems had classes and which didn't. Except the tiefling, that was in 4e and I used rogue class because he was suppose to be a thieving shit who'll in a duel throw sand in your eyes, kicks you in the balls and stab you in the back if he can.You also seem to confuse a class where your progression and character is locked to a specific role with a specific skill-set, and a character background where you might receive certain starting benefits (a soldier is a better fighter, a researcher is more educated, etc.) and from there you're free to develop your character as you wish. Maybe your bookworm know-it-all decides their rights shall not be infringed and picks up gunslinging along the way? And even then that doesn't mean your starting set-up is set. I know the dwarf's diplomacy was a starting career, but I got plenty of room to form their skills to my liking (put a few extra points to cooking just for the fun of it).
>>98914735Curse of Fenric is good desu. Also the whole thing is on YouTube on the official doctor who channel. I am not paid to shill doctor who serials, I do it for free on my own initiative.https://youtu.be/GkmMziOMKRM?si=4GkRVeI35N-k4vfI
>>98917233>goalpostmaxingbuddy, it literally is one where you can "only use gravity", it is just also one where you can alternatively use something else.If I gave you one that didn't have that was like that you'd just go "oh but my character can walk and breath and shit, therefore they don't 'only' do gravity".You're just being pedantic. Yes there's multiple game systems out there that have what you asked for. I know an upcoming one where a specific race gets gravity shit, but a subclass also gets gravity shit, and you can optimize by comparing the two.But they still are able to perform basic humanoid actions besides gravity magic so I guess that's not good enough.
