>>98916160WHFB was a pretty fun, silly wargame until about 2002 when it was slowly replaced by a cynical corporate cash-in wearing the same skin. that wasn't making enough money though, so they killed it in favor of AOS, an even more cynical cash-in that reoriented toward the upcoming generation raised on smartphone games. then THAT wasn't making enough money, so they made TOW a (somehow) even more cynical cash-in aimed at recapturing some of the older market.there's still some good stuff in there, you just have to dig way way down.
>>98916160Old World and Fantasy are rank and flank games where units move in set formation, meaning units wheel, reform and manoeuvre as blocks. It has square bases, it also has more relevant unit loadout customization for both normal unit weapons and items for heroes. Flanking, morale, effects of banners etc.are important for combat resolution. Typically much more minis on tables than AOS also it's more of classic middle ground between dark and high fantasy compared to AOS's more modern high fantasy. TOW and WHFB have fundamentally the same core gameplay, just that certain systems got tweaked and are slightly different.AOS uses round bases and units aren't in blocks and move as squads where minis can be positioned independently within a set range. Armies are composed of regiments featuring a character and a few units. There isn't army loadout customization, but unit abilities are much more more important and the game also has certain army abilities you can spend replenishing points to trigger every round on certain units. Morefast paced than old world, miniatures are also bigger on average.

What are Renegade Crowns good at? I'm reading through their army and they mostly seem like Empire but gimped.Phalanx is a nice trick, and Blunderbuss Brigands seem good. I can see the appeal in having Warband on my infantry and the novelty of putting armour on my shooty units. But after that it all seems quite empty. The cavalry is both bare-bones and expensive, there's no support characters, and nothing flashy or hard-hitting. >>98917313>Codex: Empire Archers
>>98914742> TQA proper Marienburg roster would be awesome and very appropriate for the time period. While it could very easily be an Empire AoI, I think it would be more faithful to be a Renegade Crowns AoI.Core of the army would look a lot like RC with Sellswords, Freeblades, Free Company and Brigand units. You'd get a few more Empire treats like Engineers and Road Wardens, but then you'd also get Marienburg-specific Sailor Priests and Templar-Marines in place of Warrior Priests and Greatswords. It would also need to have access to Hugh Elf Sea Guard and Ship's Company from their AoI for Elftown, maybe with a representative Hero.Obviously abundant access to Mercenaries of all stripes.

>>989187075th Edition seaguard game with blank plastic shields. The ones you posted are using the Island of Blood seaguard shields that have 3D features and tassels.
>>98918641Why do thy even call it Sigmarxism if there's very little AOS stuff posted?
>>98918736Guess they made some metal shields later then, make them they did. I don't think the plastic models even have shield variety.Don't make me get into my storage to take evidence pics.
>>98918755emperorisim doesnt quite match their ideology. Something about conquerors. idk.
>>98918755I never really followed plebbit shitters, so idk if it was ever about age of sigmar in the first place. I'm assuming it's just because the name sounds catchy.
>bitch deleted his post instead of just admitting to be wrong about decade old miniature releasesWhat kind of kindergarten shit is this?
>>98918827what the fuck are you talking about anon
>>98918827Those look real nice. I always ran my Spearman with the included quivers and helmet garnishes as Sea Guard.
>>98918839I think the 6th edition book basically said to do this with spearmen, and to just paint dragons on their shields. idk can't really remember without looking.Speaking of seaguard, the OP links don't have the High Elf AJ. Boooo.
>>98918842The instruction booklet for the TOW re-release of the Spearmen shows it as a way to make Sea Guard. Warmed my heart to see.
>>98918608>muh fantasy was already dead before 8th! they just wanted to milk money out of the people who still played!" but that's just not truePriestley states in an interview that whfb was in hot water as early as 3rd edition.>GW wouldn't have launched 8th just for some residual moneyWhy the fuck wouldn't they have lol
>>98918850>Priestley states in an interview that whfb was in hot water as early as 3rd edition.A game designer's statement on the state of the line from the 80s means nothing.>Why the fuck wouldn't they have lolThat's not how publicly traded companies work.
>>98918842That was always hilarious to me, because even the serpent motif in the armybook instructions didn't look very good.Honestly can't think why they didn't just include some serpents in the sprue.
It's too bad Seaguard are today and have always been utter dogshit for their points. The only reason to use them is if you like the theme.
>>98918850>As early as 3rd.Maybe in his mind as an employee fearing for his project. But reality is higher ups greenlighted a whole plastic starter box by 5th so they still had strong hopes it will catch up. No doubt they knew it was a dead dream by 8th tho.
Since we are talking about minor factions like hobogoblins>CW recruit mostly from Norscan, Hung and Kurgan>Norscans are vikangz, that's fitting and cool>Hung are horsefuckers, that's fitting and cool>Kurgan are... also horsefuckers... why?Always felt really wasteful to me purely narratively. Feels like an obvious third source of recruits would be Sword and Sorcery notConan/notCimmerian barbarians instead of more horsefuckers. Especially given how old Marauders looked like Sword & Sorcery and not vikangz like new ones. Just confusing all around for me
>>98918879Drilled and the free reform after shooting makes them fun to play at least.
Made a post in the AoS thread a couple days ago about how I wanted to get a Warhammer gift for my friend who always showed interest for the hobby but only ever played the Total War games. Between the info I managed to gather on my own and the helpful anons back there, I decided to get him these Spearhead magazines since they seemed cheap and small enough to check if he actually likes the whole collecting, painting and so on before investing into something bigger.Thing is, as the anons pointed out, the AoS stuff isn't really what he knows of from the TW games, so I decided to also look for something closer to the lore he's accustomed to. I know of The Old World and anon also mentioned Battle March. He likes the dwarfs, rats and vampires but I know he has somewhat of a soft spot for this Karl Franz guy. Would you be so kind to give me some directions for something noob friendly or some cool model of Karl? Thanks in advance, anons. For the couple of days I've been browsing this board, I can tell you guys are by far the most friendly people on the whole site.
>>98919158Some other anon can hopefully correct me if I'm wrong since I've never owned this model, but I think the General on Imperial Gripffin model can still be built as Karl-Franz, even though it's not advertised as such (KF isn't alive yet during TOW's time period). Not what I'd describe as a newbie friendly model though. This is what I'd recommend:https://www.warhammer.com/en-WW/shop/empire-of-man-captain-of-the-empire-2025Plastic character kit with the same vibe and simple enough to not be intimidating.
Total War was a net negative for whfb
>>98919260Total War Warhammer 3 was the net negative. 1 and 2 were decent and true to WHFB.
>>98919498eh vampire coasts were kinda pure OC. High elves also enabled kislev.
>>98919498They are games meant for secondaries.
>>98919513Vampire Coast should have been in 3, with Ogres in 2 in their place. I will stand on that hill until I keel over. >>98919559Do you consider all the video games to be meant for secondaries? What about people who eagerly played Shadow of the Horned Rat, Dark Omen and Mark of Chaos, before excitedly discussing the games with the lads at the gaming club? What about long term veterans of WHFB who would raid and PvP in Age of Reckoning, or fire up Vermintide for some co-op with the gaming buddies?
>>98919575Yeah kinda but Vermintide is good.
>>98919575>>98919583Wait nvm i misread. Yeah if you're actually participating with the main hobby you're fine.
>>98919583Vermintide 1 is a 10/10 game. 2 is... watered down and fun, but lacks the sensation of playing a WFRP campaign. The combat in 2 is also far more spam to win and less precise and weighed down. >>98919586Fair, have yourself a great night Anon. Glad we could agree after the misunderstanding!
>>98919575Vampire coast was kino and perfect for tww2, it was the right place and the right time.
>>98916189Reminder that it was admitted by ex-GW staff that 7th edition 40k and AoS combined nearly bankrupted GW and 8th edition 40k singlehandedly saved the company.
Fuck lads, this is the closest I've gotten in my 20 years of collecting and painting warhammer sporadically to having an actual armyI hope I actually enjoy this game
>>98919657Based, I feel you
