As a DM. How do your player's parties usually respond to BBEGs with sympathetic backstories?
>>98916348What type of dumb ass question is this
>>98916348>As a DMHow do yours?
>>98916348Depends on what characters they're playing. The current constellation would probably agree that it's too bad things turned out the way it did, but then conclude that the group and the BBEG want different things, then proceed to defeat them anyway. One of my players play a character whose brother is one of the bad guys. Initially the player wanted to save the brother, but he's now abandoned that goal, and is intent on removing the brother from play to save face for his family.
>>98916348I've always found that playoids HATE that sort of thing and feel like you're trying to toy with their emotions in what's supposed to be a fun pastime. And of course playoids will never want to actually talk to a BBEG. And to be fair, the protagonists standing around listening to their enemy talk is one of those movie tropes that players play games to get away from.
>>98916752>1799: became First Consul during the Second Coalition War>1801: made peace with Austria>1802: made peace with Britain>1803: Britain declared war again>Yep, Napoleon's fault
>>98916348
>>98917165Napoleon is only seen as evil by cucks: ie british and french people.
>>98917443Isn't he a French hero?
>>98917456No street or monument in France bears his name, because (officially) is is seen as a dictator.
>>98916348... respond to who and what?
>>98916348Sympathetic villains are all pathetic no sym.The best villains are professional haters. Skeletor, Black Manta, Dr. DOOM, the Mighty Monarch, Kahn, Scorpius from Farscape, Baal from Stargate.Villains who will do whatever they can to fuck with the hero or to get what they want from the hero. Even the Joker, who is one of the worst flanderized villains isnt loved because hes just soooooo insane & keeps Batman guessing or whatever. Its that he has devoted his life to fucking with batman, he could loose all the itber the.es of his character & if he kept his obsession for Batman it would be fine. Like King Arthur & Mordred, or Sherlock & Moriarty, the only end that can come from this level of animosity is mutually assured destruction (some exceptions may apply
>>98916348Sympathetic backstories are gay, let your players feel good about winning.
The LGBTQ+ community is statistical overrepresented in tabletop gaming compared to the general population. It is probably, because it is a safe outlet for expression, it is therapeutic, and it is a creative hobby which is often a non-conforming marker.
>>98918542More like that roleplaying is an intense form of self-delusion and or narcissism, and that tabletop games allow people to indulge in these. Non-straight people tend to be up their own asses.t. Bisexual Writer, Non-Roleplayer
>>98916348By cutting their fucking head off and looting their still warm corpse.
>>98917456No. He is viewed as a controlling, narcissistic dictator even if he did a lot of good things. France and Europe are too much a faggot-state to distance themselves from his legacy though. He proved egotistical ultra-nationalist assholes make good leaders and it fucking kills them to admit it's true.
>>98916348Doesn't work if it's not a misunderstood cute girl.
>>98916348Kill them even more violently (this is based and what I want).
>>98916348>How do your player's parties usually respond to BBEGs with sympathetic backstories?I don't know. I've taken great care to never make a villain even slightly sympathetic. The purpose of villains is to be a target of hate who gets brutally massacred, ideally by the hero. A villain who isn't hateable is a bad villain.
