I just found out why my players have been acting differently. Apparently they all watched Dungeon Soup. I had a whole thing going in with an Orc Barbarian visiting Heaven and having the opportunity to confront the God of Luck. At first he failed miserably and just accepted the God's challenge to try to hit him, but he didn't roll a nat 20, so he missed out on a ton of stuff. Then later, when he apparently watched the Dungeon Soup episode with the Leprechaun, he was really keen on trying to go to Heaven again and challenging the God of Luck again. Back then I thought the player was really clever, but he just recreated exactly what he saw in a Dungeon Soup episode.

>>98919047how is that going to solve the problem?the same strat can work against any being of supernatural luck, no matter what system
>>98919052I feel like a God should have more active control over their luck than a leprechaun. The leprechaun getting fucked because he always wins at any cost is more of a fey rules kind of play.
>>98919068I had something else in mind. He isn't an actual God. He was originally a mortal, but was cursed with an extreme amount of luck. So the Gods invited him to Heaven. Originally his name "God of Luck" was kinda used mockingly, but that joke was lost after hundreds of mortal generations. But the players didn't know any of that. That was all just backstory they had no way of knowing.
>>98919075The leprechaun setup also involves him agreeing to a bad ruleset. Unless this so called god has a compulsion to always follow through with whatever insane request comes, he should be able to just say "no, that isn't a game, pick something that is". A fey can be compelled to follow rules to its own doom, a random good luck guy shouldn't be.
>>98919024>but he just recreated exactly what he saw in a Dungeon Soup episode.Players and GMs borrowing ideas from, in varying degrees from >from slight nod to let them know you know and they know you know it to >rip the whole thing right the fuck off the hinges and strap it to your forehead like you were born with it is not a new or even bad thing. I like it better when the reference pool is wider so people bring in more interesting and creative pieces but sometimes its not going to be elegant like that.
>>98919087The situation was that the PC could have challenged the God of Luck to get an important item back and he probably would have accepted almost any challenge, but he just went ahead, tried to hit him, didn't roll a 20 and didn't get anything from it.
That never happened. Also that webtoon is boring and one note.
>>98919024People steal ideas from popular media all the time and have been doing so since the dawn of the hobby. Don't get too hung up on it. You didn't get tricked. The player didn't get anything he didn't deserve. You had a good time. her had a good time. Sure the moment might have felt a bit cheapened from the stolen idea, but my campaign would probably feel a bit cheapened if I listed all my inspirations, too. Just enjoy the moment for what it was and don't worry about it.
