No, those still suck, especially if there's an attempt to treat them seriously.Corrupting fairy tails, or even just opting to use the darkest possible versions of them, quickly begins to fall into that sort of bad-faith writing that you see dominating how Garth Ennis twists super hero comics. It's mean-spirited, and mostly just an attempt to shock and offend.I use to think there was a "right" way to go about it, like the Alan Moore Watchmen approach to Super Hero comics where there's clearly genuine love for the genre amidst the parodies and deconstructions, but even then there's a certain amount of... arrogance. It's that "UM ACKCHUALLY-" spirit that tries to apply "realism" in dickish ways or subverts tropes just for the sake of subversion. Re-reading Watchmen, there's only a few chapters that are proper love-letters to the genre, while the majority is a whole lot of "The superhero who got his powers from radiation has inadvertently given his girlfriend cancer from long term exposure to himself" type material that really can only be treated as comically mean-spirited towards the genre rather than an effort to be mature.I think I know exactly what really made me just abandon the idea that "dark fairy tales" could be treated as "mature" was a scene from the Witcher 3 DLC. Geralt ends up in a dimension where classic fairy tales are given the typical "savage black humor" approach the Witcher is known for. At its center there is a tall tower, and near its base is the skeleton of a prince that apparently died from a fall while trying to scale the outside. Inside the tower, there is the skeleton of girl with very long hair, who apparently hung herself with her own exceptionally long braid.After seeing that, I realized I'd never be able to take "TRUE ULTRA-GRIMM FAIRY TALES" seriously ever again.
