After a long time away (I last remember the first XYZ cards being advertised), I tried playing Master Duel recently and built a legendary six samurai deck because I played the original six samurai. I know about Yugioh power creep, hell every TCG has power creep, but this is just fucking ridiculous.
Almost every single deck I went against could crap out at least 5 boss monsters from the extra deck, remove every monster, and spell/trap from my field in the process, and then do a one turn kill, even if the deck was non-meta like Synchro Diva. Or they could set up a ton of negations on their board that made it impossible for you to do anything. I thought the 20 minute turns were a meme but no, those turns actually take that fucking long to the point nobody plays trap cards any more.
The only wins I got were against someone who auto quit and an Exodia deck who spammed a bunch of draw spells to get the Exodia pieces and failed.
I tried making a meta deck. But then I found out I didn’t know any of the archetypes and the ones I did know were completely unrecognizable. Like the hero deck is literally 4 different hero subtypes put together. And then even the cheapest decks have like 15 UR cards in the extra that all need to be there to function properly.
How the fuck did Yugioh become like this? I’m still used to using hand sizes to gauge how many cards my opponent can play.

have the fun of yugioh is playing it like its the early 00s
if you arent memeing and make sound effects from the chinese cartoon while you play, you arent playing yugioh

I remember my experience with Master Duel was playing Volcanics, which actually did get to use trap cards. Largely so that I could stall for just long enough to nuke the opponent's board and get out copies of Volcanic Emperor so they get burned for each special summon.

Which in some ways was very satisfying to watch clueless players struggle to play the game when their standard summoning combo deals 8000 burn damage to their face before they're even finished. But it also ultimately wasn't very enjoyable because it just turned everything into non-games because a lot of decks simply fall apart if they don't get to special summon a dozen times for free.

>How the fuck did Yugioh become like this?
Power Creep in other TCGs often comes in the form of undercosted cards, but since in Yugioh the only costs are the card itself and a limited normal summon, that means an 'undercosted' card is one that special summons itself or gives you more material.
Grandmaster of the Six Samurai would be a pretty good example of that, where instead of tributing the monster you normal summoned, you're just special summoning it for free. And if it dies, you can get something back in your hand anyway.
Which is to say, if you can see how it took less than a decade to get from Summoned Skull being too slow compared to Grandmaster, you can see how in two decades Grandmaster has similarly become too slow. The trajectory becomes rather clear in retrospect.

And it's also been like this for long enough that the people buying packs enjoy this sort of combo gameplay. So that's who the game caters to.

So you're saying that you didn't play the game for 15 years, opened the game with an almost-20-year-old deck, and are wondering why you got curbstomped? Are you stupid?

That's why you run anti-meta. You run stuns, you run floodgates, and you run hand traps. You make the game as unfun for these metaslop shitters as you can, you learn what piece in their combo needs to be cucked to break their entire strategy down, and then they will ragequit and you'll rack up the wins and the salt.

Comes with being a manga merch game that outgrew itself

Pretty much why I stopped playing the actual game since 2016 or so, and instead went back to the old ds and psp games.
If anything, I went further by making a no effect monsters format since it felt like you weren't playing your fav cards anymore, and just played the most broken effects.
