How do you get over writing block? I'm looking at the barrel of our campaign ending and I can't seem to have it in me to plan the next.
>>98926641Read some not game related things. Historical bits, fiction, anything. Go outside and stretch a bit, make something to eat, get some rest, get off the internet and social media. Take a notebook with you, get caffeinated, jot down ideas as they come.
>>98926641watch a "complicated" TV show, when you see bits of it that could have been better, plotholes, annoying characters acting out-of-character, etc... you might be inspired to do better, yourselfsomething like Heroes, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead... whatever you're intoflat-out steal a plot line, but like... your own version of it
>>98926641Are you the only GM in your group? You might just be burnt out homie, make somebody else take a turn.
>>98926912This. Just watch a good movie related to what you would usually run for you group.
Everyone saying "absorb media" is absolutely right. As an additional idea (for when you don't have the opportunity to read it watch), try taking a piece of paper and writing down questions about the last campaign (I assume they are connected). Things like "whatever happened to X?" or "how would Y deal with an enemy who's immune to his melee attacks?" or "what is the nicest example of <enemy> like?"Just spam them out, and many will be obvious or boring... But a few will be interesting.
>>98926641Have you tried running a game?Instead of writing ahead of time, let the story emerge from the gameplay.
>>98928190>Okay... so... um... you guys are at the castle...>...>...>Anon?>..."INSTEAD OF WRITING LET THE STORY EMERGE FROM GAMEPLAY"
>>98928204>he picked a game where you don't know what to do "at the castle"lol get fuckedPlay better games.
>>98928214You're telling op to quit planning and let story emerge from gameplay for the literal campaign endingI don't know what sessions you have ran but they can't be good storytelling wise
>>98926641I just finished a 3-year campaign myself, and for various reasons I too was struggling with creative blocks at the end. I can tell you what worked for me.Tell someone about your game. Could be a friend that isn't a player, or you could try recounting it here (just don't expect much in the way of encouragement). By retelling the story of your campaign to another person, you may rediscover things that you enjoy about it, plot threads that you left dangling, or themes that can inform how the story ends.(pic is something I shooped as part of my game's epilogue)
The same way you improve normal writer's block, live life. Try new things, meet new people, push yourself to have novel experiences. Most DM prep inspiration I have would be a cool movie I saw, an interesting person I met, or an amazing sight I've seen. Just yesterday a guy on the bus next to me was talking out of the blue about his gun collection. I was interested and struck up a conversation, and then found out he's a felon who has been divorced and desperately needs to sell his collection. He blamed Biden for it all. Interesting character, I plan to use him as an NPC shopkeeper in my star wars campaign.
>>98928242>You're telling op to quit planning and let story emerge from gameplay for the literal campaign endingRead OP again.>>98926641>I can't seem to have it in me to plan the next."The next", not the current.I'm really surprised a storyfag can't read.Having said that, games don't need stories, and they don't need to tell stories. Games aren't for "WOW MY DM LET ME DO THIS COOL THING ON A NAT 20 LET ME GREENTEXT IT AND TEXT TO SPEECH IT ON YOUTUBE!!" nor are they for circles of players to go "remembuh the time? Yeah I remembuh the time. Hey Joe, he remembuh the time too."Games are something fun to do to pass the time. They aren't to boost your Reddit social credit or for tales to pass down to younger generations; they're just games. You don't need stories in games.
>>98926641That pic is funny, but the bunny is generating the electricity?
>>98926641Im not a DM; but I am part of the team reworking a homebrew mecha TTBG rulebook and face similar issues when working on the documents and running playtests for hours on end. My break is going and working on a model for the game instead to shake things up. Idk if y'all are just pen and paper players; but maybe peruse your lgs and see if there's a model you would like to be your next big bad.
