>finish campaign and my tenure as GM
>Group wants to go back to DnD

Checks out, a lot of people who play roleplaying games nowadays want to be able to tell stories of their games, and if they're playing something other than D&D, then some details on the game won't make sense unless the player also describes the differences, which can make a listener less receptive to the story.

So what game were you actually running, OP? Did they actually want to play that game, or did they just keep going out of inertia? Because it seems like your group are creatures of habit, and it is more important that those habits are maintained than risked upon the altar of improvement.

The pitch was
>We want to play a different game hey anon knows different games anon come run it for us
>Nobody gave enough of a fuck to invest in learning how to run it
We did Mutant Year Zero

This sounds offensively likely.
It's insane how all of culture is essentially amalgamating into the same oversocialized slop.
You know who else has that problem?
Fucking. RAVERS.
Y'know.
The people who have built their scene around being social.
Even they're getting raped by people's need to make the moment about the Social Media presence.

That's called Lake Geneva Syndrome. It comes from people learning to play D&D as their first TTRPG and since that's the most complex system in the world, they are traumatized by it, thinking all other games are equally complex.

DnDevil's Advocate, the group jumping between new systems and dnd isn't a total loss yet.
I'd say the campaign after this next one is arguably more important, if you can lure them away from dnd 'again' then you've got a workable pattern of exploration, whether or not you're running the game.

If this is part of the issue OP could try to point out some light systems, literally leave out some one-page rpgs or zines if you do shit in person, or just links in the chat if not. You might be able to coax someone into running a oneoff if someone misses a session.

It's really weird how the more diverse society gets, the more homogenous it becomes.

The more voices in a room the louder you have to shout.

The key lesson of trying to not play D&D is that no matter what you play instead most people will want to get back to D&D. Sooner rather than later.

A lot of the more specific genre and setting games are harder to run more than once.
You can likely still get everyone to alternate between dnd and something else though.

What other games do you want to play with your group OP?

My group first all got introduced to TTRPGs and each other through a hacked together homebrew game. We usually play shit like that by default. But you know what? We still play DnD as one-shots now and then. Because it's easier to do. We actually play the "Other Games" all the fake story idiots on this board romanticize. And we still sometimes play DnD.

It's the fucking mcdonalds of TTRPGs. Get over it. It will be the thing you get when you're not in the mood to cook when you get home. You will still play it if you play enough games. And you'll go back to other systems. So just get the fuck over it. It's the coca cola of TTRPGs. You can tell me you wish you were drinking some pretentious wine, but even if you did you'd still drink a coke. You might even mix some cheap red wine and coke. Which you wouldn't believe how "not that bad" but "somehow I want more" that stuff is. And that's your average DnD homebrew too.

So don't give me this shit about how you're going back to DnD.You no longer have to GM. Free game! Once you have the energy to GM again you can run another obscure system your friends will pretend to like but will validate your posts on this board.

You can hype up a restaurant to your friends, convince them to go with you, and they might actually enjoy it. And the next week you'll be right back at the same burger place you all usually go. "that was nice though, we should do that more often" and maybe you will. But when you're not doing that, or chasing other novelties, you'll be back at your usual place.

That's what people get wrong with this shit.

I am hungry for breakfast, slightly hungover, and out of eggs.
