I must GM and somehow I don't feel the fantasy feeling this days. Give me some movie, book or anime to watch that will put me in the mood /tg/. Nothing mid tier. Hard mode: No LOTR

>>98932685What if I want a fantasy mood, not a "fantasy" mood?
>>98932656>13th WarriorThis underrated gem is literally the only fantasy film I like. I can respect something like LOTR as a work of incredible effort and craftsmanship, but give me a dozen vikings and Antonio Banderas any day.
>>98932894>This underrated gem is literally the only fantasy filmIt's not a fantasy film. There's nothing supernatural in it whatsoever. Chrichton may have used a fantasy epic as the starting point, but it is a historical drama which deliberately takes every possible supernatural element and explains it away.It is less fantasy than Braveheart.
>>98932602Go read the classics where the ideas are still fresh if a bit unpolished instead of uninspired regurgitations of standardised tropes or (ugh) their ironic deconstructions. Go read and watch old heroic tales and legends which are the original fantasy tales.Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, Earthsea, Conan, Dying Earth, The Black Company, Gilgamesh, Kalevala, Arthurian legends, the Matter of France, stuff like that.Failing that go read and watch good stories. It doesn't matter if you watch a movie about knights, cowboys, samurais, musketeers, WWII soldiers or space truckers, a good story can always provide interesting and relatable plot hooks after some reskinning.
>>98932933Yeah, not sure why people tout it as fantasy. One wouldn't say Watership Down is an epic poem, if it's based on the Aeneid.>but it is a good inspo! It is, even if I wouldn't put my money on it being a good DND/generic standard-ish fantasy inspo. But so is a fuckton of actual history books or the like.
>>98932602Slayers.
>>98932988NTA, but I'd say Watership Down is pretty much an epic poem with all the heroism, violence, mythology and general grand scale as any of the classics of antiquity.
>>98932786Came here to post this. Even just watching the intro puts me in the mood.
>>98932933The enormous nocturnal cave dwellers who live in a flooded cave system and are indoctrinated into a bear-fixated combat trance by a teenage sorceress... Well let's split the difference and say that didn't happen in history whether or not it's outright supernatural (it is, they should all be dead from mildew and rickets).
>>98932602I've been on a Adrian Tchaikovsky. He's known for a scifi series but he does so damn good fantasy that can renew your interest in the genre. As long as you don't mind bugs. It's not Adrian Tchaikovsky without bugs somewhere. For something raw and unique Read City of Last Chances, first book of the Tyrant Philosophers series. I could try to sell you on it, but maybe it would be more fun to be surprised by that different than what you might be used to. It only has one bug. Unlike his much longer fantasy series that is entirely about fantasy bug races with bug powers. That series was ok in parts but was overall mid.
>>98933100>I've been on an Adrian Tchaikovsky kickaccidentally the last word there.
>>98932602Why not run something you are interested in, instead?

>>98932602Dungeon Meshi is genuinely one of the best D&D inspired fantasy worlds I've seen and the magic/combat is surprisingly grounded, and the characters... Absolutely Masterclass Writing
Bit of a left field suggestion here, but Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. It's about Marco Polo describing the world to Kublai Khan, and Polo making up a series of fantastical, dream-like cities that may or may not be allegorical. It's a fairly short work and really got my own imagination going.
>>98934451Manga >>> anime here. Also make sure to read its worldbuilding book.
>>98932602Have some old fantasy. And maybe inspiration for an evil sorcerer.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeAvwI1XwcM
>>98932627>the genre is broadMore broad than 99.99% of people realize.
>>98932602Just crack open the players handbook for d&d 5.5E and let all the fantasy therein inspire you. I’m trans btw in case that matters
>>98932602Try things that are fantasy but color outside of your normal comfort zone, nothing kills the feeling of wonder like over-familiarity. You know elves and dwarves and dragons by heart, so they are no longer interesting. You need something new, where you don't already have the full story, to tickle your imagination. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViYqM7bTzbk
>>98932602I suggest Lankhmar – the short stories, mind. The novels are for later.
>>98932786https://archive.org/details/record-of-lodoss-war-comptiq-magazine-english-translationSomeone translated the original magazine articles the animu was based on. Kind of a cool look under the hood for long-time fans. Also reminded me of being a kid playing DnD for the first time when something as ordinary as a group of skeletons standing in a room waiting to fight the party still seemed cool.

>>98935364>frieren vs Dungeon meshi? frieren looks a little bit more interestingAs someone that likes both?Frieren is front-loaded with its quality. Its first episode is great, and the next two are excellent as well. Its a thoughtful, melancholy vibe at the start but after that it kind of takes a while to give you something but more of the same when it starts to actually talk about the Demons. The Demons, and the exploration of their alien mindset, is probably the best part of the story thusfar but there are long stretches of the anime and manga where they are not around. Whats in between them is good and high quality, but if you started to get bored with it thats understandable. Frieren is not concerned about the worldbuilding at all, purely the character explorations and the differences between humans and things that only look like humans, both elves and demons. Dungeon Meshi has almost the opposite. Its first few chapters/episodes are by far the weakest, very episodic in nature and with weak characterization that ends up being out of character for how these people are written later on in the story. That said, there is a MASSIVE jump in quality around the red dragon arc where the "real" story begins, and it stays high quality from then on forward. Dungeon Meshi loves its worldbuilding, and the consistency is such that you'll have foreshadowing long in advance of knowing what any of this means but its clear that the author didn't make this shit up on the fly, this was baked in from the start. So its a slow burn that turns into an excellent fantasy story, perhaps one of the best that the medium has ever produced. The anime is the best way to experience Frieren. The manga is the best way to experience Dungeon Meshi.

>>98932602You can run a game that isn't fantasy, retard.
>>98935439>The anime is the best way to experience Frieren.I'll try the anime then, if it's not better than the manga I'll come back, hunt you down and feed you to a mimic feet first.
>>98932602>I must GM and somehow I don't feel the fantasy feeling this days.Read history, from myths to the daily life of the ancients to minor details. Steal interesting bits, characters, places and plot hooks wholesale like you're a one-man conquista. Just change some names, add pointy ears and shit and even if they get where you've stolen it from they'll appreciate the reference.
>>98932602Modern """fantasy""" is just world of warcraft era slop. You have people using swords and revolvers and steamtrains and wagons at the same time. Which isn't fantasy its just steampunk hiding its true face.
>>98935821>I don't have any recommendations I just want to cry on the Internet! Waaaaah waaaaah waaaah!
>>98935821While poor worldbuilding is a plague, the idea that fantasy cannon include things from after the middle ages is a fundamental failure on your part to understand what the fantasy genre is. The fantasy genre is not just LOTR and its knockoffs, and its a disservice to the genre to pretend thats all its allowed to be.
>>98935886Even appendix N has gunpowder in (clearly) fantasy works. And I mean secondary world fantasy, not science-fantasy, weird or horror.Gunpowder hate is just an old trope that Tolkien recycled from Ariosto (to his credit, with an interesting twist, but both ideas are... never used in fantasy?). It's perfectly doable within DND constraints and more than perfectly apt as inspo. Well, before revolvers, but that's just because then you basically can't do three musketeers style swashbuclking, not because of whatever bizzarre shit secondaries think about "middle ages".
