Fuck it. /mph/ general. Discuss potato head. Complain about Hasbro. I'm mad as fuck that after 30 fucking years we still dont have a replica of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head as shown in Toy Story. Ive been reaching out since Toy Story 4 was announced about this and Ive never seen gotten a reply. Ive been collecting these shits since I was a kid. Theres an amazing custom but its so expensive and I cant afford it.This picture is the new family releasing at some point, currently only shown on Amazon Mexico. They look better than other official offerings but they still dont look enough like the movies. At least they have seperate shoes.
>>11788513Theyve released a seperate talking Mr. Potato Head, he looks good but the pegs are thicker so the parts are incompatible with the main line of toys. Probably the best looking and closest we've ever gotten to an official movie accurate release. Mine has loose pegs on the hat and shoes so they practically fall out if I try and handle it. Also does not stop talking in play mode without removing the mouth so I took the batteries out.
>>11788516Here's what the previous Toy Story releases from Hasbro have been since the first movie. From Toy Story 1-3 they used the late 80s revision with removable arms, reusing molds from the Bucket of Parts from 1987 and the re-release in 89 with removable arms. This was unsatisfactory to me and always has been.
>>11788519Toy Story 4 utilized new and old molds and utilized the 2011 body redesign, where as the new family found on amazon Mexico utilizes the 2025 body redesign and mostly new parts. Thinkway released a "movie accurate" Toy Story Collection Mr. Potato Head but it was abysmal looking. It also retailed for 60 dollars due to having stupid electronic features nobody wanted.
>>11788522The best ever made are the sid toys/seed toys customs, but theyre incredibly expensive and to my knowledge no longer being made. Theyre mostly accurate, Mr.'s ears are too big and Mrs. hat and ears are too small, they utilize magnetic eyebrows to achieve the look from the movie. I just want Hasbro to do something like this, but higher quality. Id gladly pay 40 or 50 bucks each to get something that isnt terrible. The main line of toys to this day is cute and I generally like the direction its going, but this area is a huge sore spot for me and I dont think I will ever be happy about it.
>>11788519Is there some sort of legal bullshit in place that prevents them from giving potatohead the bendy arms he had jn the movies? I can stomach the facial inaccuracies for the most part, I have with buzz and woody for decades now, but the fact that potatohead ia always stuck with static arms annoys me in the same way buzz lacking a functional communicator for 15 years did.
>>11788848The 1980s had the non-removable bendy arms, and the late 80s (89 i think?) Introduced removable arms with the weird poses, these parts up until about 2002-2005 were rubbery and not hard plastic, at some point they transitioned to hard plastic pieces and have redesigned the arms in 2011 and then again with the newest rendition in 2025. >>11788513Walmart has this exclusive US themed potato head, picked it up today. Got home and noticed a strange amount of differences. The parts are all compatible with the potato heads from the 1980a to now, and all utilize the 2025 updated part format, but the trapdoor has very little play, the pegs are a lot shorter, and the mouth hole that changed to a smile shape in 2011 (something im not a fan of but otherwise I think the newer designs are good, with the 2025 having seperate shoes being a huge upgrade), and the paint job is different such as the ears being matte instead of glossy. Otherwise its all based on Hasbro's molds and pieces, but its different enough that you can tell its different. Its a licensed release by Basic Fun, im not sure why Hasbro didnt make this themselves as theyve done regional themed Potato Heads in the past such as Uncle Sam and the Chinese new year set. Idk, super strange but still cool to add to my collection of over 250 potatos.
>>11788848>>11788863I should clarify, the changes with the pieces and transition from rubber to hard plastic is most likely due to stricter safety regulations. Other examples include the 50s models rounding the pegs, basically making the need for a plastic potato as the vegetable is harder to pierce, or the transition from the 60s to the 70s with the parts becoming much larger (and slotted, 70s is probably the worst era for the Mr. Potato Head brand), to the change to conjoined eyes and shoes in the 80s thats lasted until now. Not sure why theyve never made one for collectors thatd be like, idk, 5+? I think itd sell well. Maybe thats my bias and tunnel vision. Anyway Mr. Potato Head history is incredibly neat.
>>11788516>>11788513I'm surprised that the Toy Story movie does nothing to help any of these older figures sell - or at least have the company's that own the rights want to release new toys for people to want
>>11788513Im so tired of unnecessary toy story sequels, but they could have at least made cool merch to coincide with the newest cash grab installment but just like toy story 4 all the new characters for 5 look like shit and they cant even make a good screen accurate mr and mrs potato head toy either. Why does disney constantly fuck up so hard? Toy story 3 had such cool new characters that made for great toys while toy story 4 and 5 have nothing but fucking shit for both the new toys character designs and even shit merch for the older characters. Im so fucking tired.
>>11789306Mr. Potato Head saw a huge surge of popularity for the toy, and every time a new film releases the toy spikes in sales, even a little with 4 which he barely has a role in. >>11789311Yeah same, but as long as they keep making them im going to campaign for the perfect potato head. Toy Story 3 had the collection which claimed to be as movie accurate as possible, the problem with that is its just not at all true and we still dont have a proper film accurate line of toys.
>>11788513>Mr. And Mrs. PH adopted Pizza Planet Aliens in the 90s>almost 2 decades later they release this toy with a potato alien hybrid childWhat are the implications here?
>>11789732Mr. Potato Head got busy with one od his adopted alien children. Its fucked up but thats hollywood. Mrs. forgave him and is raising the child as her own, because she is nothing if not a Godly woman
I had one as a kid, don't think it was a direct movie tie-in but it had all the parts to make him at least (along with some other stuff, only thing that stands out is a green cap.) Always thought it was weird whenever I saw more modern ones on the shelf and they gave him pants, what's up with that?
>>11789810They started that in 2011. This design was the first major deviation since the 1980s when removable arms were introduced. This included 3 holes on the back, and 2 middle holes between the ears and arms as well as changing the mouth slot into a smile shape and the head hole becoming a slot like the feet hole, the shoes then became molded pants and legs with shoes. The new 2025 model simplified the holes to be in line with the 80s, with the exception of a hole on the back compartment, which now takes up the entire back of the potato instead of the bottom half. All the parts from the 80s to now are still compatible with the 2011 and 2025 models with varying levels of proportion issues. 2025 has new parts again, with the most notable being pants with removable shoes, finally returning to seperate removable shoes for the first time since the 70s. As it goes the new design is very streamlined and adorable, but the toy story design has so much soul so I dont know why they cant make some kind of special edition thats completely accurate
>>11789822Forgot pic, this is the redesign. Interesting enough is the arms on the box are mirrored but none of the other parts are, theres a new second edition of the box art that still has this issue present for its renders, as of now the arms have not been released in the box art orientation.
>>11789427I guess it's another issue where the stores aren't really carrying anything in retail near me and that it doesn't occur to me to order crap on line because I hate Crapazom.
>>11789824Senor cara de papa ...
>>11789909Makes sense, most stores in the US like Walmart or target still has them, and the patriotic uncle Sam is walmart exclusive. But for the most part amazon is unfortunately the place with the most stock of it. >>11789929Genuinely hilarious localization.
>>11788513i didnt grow up with mr potato head. what is the appeal of it? i want to get potatopilled
