Got back into hot wheels collecting after revisiting a old movie I enjoyed from a pink rabbit of all people. Got a acceleracers silver series and have been getting cars I considered cool ever since. Its nice to get back into a hobby, and its affordable and you can go hunting for older cars that are interesting to look at as well, that ain't to bad in price.

It's Pippa, isn't it? She showed the movies, like, 3 times, lol. And then bought a massive tub of Hot Wheels and went through them all on stream. Fun times. I think she genuinely inspired a lot of her viewers to start collecting, or to get back into doing so, so you're not alone.

Got a couple more today, they were on sale at Save On Foods again. The Bently was from a Dollar Store I stopped in at. It and the Slide-Burn both have metal bodies, the Blitzspeeder (middle, green & pruple) is plastic body/metal chassis.
I am running out of room on my desk, but I can still fit a few more here yet...

It's pretty awesome. Great side profile. Kind of like a mashup between a Corvette C3 and a Mustang (or some other pony car). Front-mid engine too by the look of it, which is rare. This metalflake olive + black paint scheme is also really nice, especially with the metallic red on the rims.

Something I learned about my Ford Escort tonight: it looks like a basic enamel paint at first glance, but it's actually metalflake! It's very subtle, practically invisible under normal lighting, but if you shine a flashlight at it, you can see it.

It wouldn't pass anyway. Chink cheapo 80s crappy metal falls apart. I'm glad I found okay-ish shell but that front had to go - cast too bad to even try to rework it, had to swap for a better one. Unfortunately hood cracked. Is'ts still early in progress. Putty and strengthening body structure next.

Not sure how I feel about the Blitzspeeder, honestly. I dug the blister out of the recyclables bin, might tape it back together and give it to a kid of a friend or relative as a present or something. Something about it just looks off to me, looks kind of cheep or plastic-y (which it technically is) or something, doesn't fit in with the rest of my collection, even though about half of them actually ARE plastic. Maybe it's the colours, maybe it'll grow on me, I dunno. What do you guys think?

That said.. I already have Han's veilside and the A80 (both time micro), and even though the fast&speed (sic) supra is definitely more accurate, it's fine.
I will look into the r34s ( mine with hood closed are ugly), especially since the mini gt C-West seems to have a pretty good livery.
I'll definitely get the Mona Lisa, Suki's S2000, and some American Horsepower.

I owe the Escort a proper close-up, so here it is in the evening sun, which brings out the metalflake sparklies really nicely. In hindsight I probably should've pointed it the other way so the side facing the camera could get some light, but whatever. This was one of the first four I bought on a whim, which got me back into collecting in the first place, and I'm glad I picked it.

I posted about it in the last thread, but Slide Burn and Custom Toronado both feel like they were designed to fit in with the late 60s/early 70s concept and licensed castings, respectively. I'd really love to see them both get actual redlines and spectraflame paint, even if it means I have to pay a scalper for a STH. Metal bases are probably out of the question, but a man can dream.

This may be a hot take, but I actually think metalflake looks better than spectraflame. I understand why people like spectraflame, and it looks good, but I LIKE how metalflake looks. The Aztec widebody has the most intense metalflake I've ever personally seen.

Spare tire paintan attempt #1. Spare satin black acrylic paint I had laying around, slightly thinned.
I have a feeling this won't turn out how I want, I was hoping I could avoid buying spray paints and just paint it by hand, but I don't think it went on very smoothly. Not sure if I should add a varnish on top once it cures.
If it doesn't work out I guess I'll drill the rivets, pull the plastic insert, strip the paint, and spray-paint it separately.

Ebay can be a bit expensive, but I couldn't resist buying a few classics that aren't being made anymore. The Super Twin Mill isn't a classic, but I think the green version isn't currently available, or at least I've never seen it, just the white version. I like the green way better, it's metalflake too. The show it's from is absolute babyslop dogwater from what I've seen but the car itself looks awesome with all the extra aero. Had to get it.
The Hammered Coupe, Cabbin Fever, and Vulture are Treasure Hunts, but I think they're a sort of more "common" Treasure Hunt, not the kind people really get that excited over. Still cool, though. I like Vulture a lot, and it looks good in this colour, which is also a subtle metalflake, similar to the Escort.

The Land Cruiser FJ40 is special, my dad actually used to have one of these for real, he did rock crawling and he'd take me with him occasionally, climbing steep, muddy logging roads with a sheer drop off the mountain on one side. Fun times. The thing was an absolute beast, it was bone stock but could keep up with modded Jeeps, Fords, and Chevys no problem. The only mod he ever considered was wheel lockers, but he never went through with it - didn't need 'em.
According to the wiki, Mattel only produced this model for two years, 2010-2012. I believe it is based, at least loosely, on the modified, propane-powered FJ40 that won the 1973 Baja 1000, driven by Bill Sanders and Pete Springer, #169 (nice). It was originally bright red, but was re-painted in bright yellow and re-numbered to #306 when it was later restored. Funnily enough, my dad also drove his to the Baja and back again for a vacation once, shortly after he married my mother.
Suffice to say, it's a hero car to both of us, I'm very happy to have it and looking forward to giving it to my dad for Father's Day. The chassis is plastic, but the body is metal, and the paint is a subtle metalflake. Nice.

And lastly, here's what I found at Walmart today. I'll get a close-up of that Porsche tomorrow, it's a 914 Safari, my first gold series Hot Wheel, and my first with real riders. It's very nice, loads of detail and all metal. The other Porsche is a 911 Carrera T, not my favourite flavour of 911 but still a fine addition regardless, it's a nice enough mainline casting. The Lotus Sport Elise is gonna be another gift for my dad since I know he likes Lotuses. And I finally found a Sling Shot! So my Acceleracers set is now complete. The Sling Shot and Carrera are both metal body/plastic chassis, and I think the Lotus is as well.
Also, since I forgot to mention it in the first post - the Deora I and Hammered Coupe are both all-metal, the Vulture and Super Twin Mill are metal body/plastic chassis, and the Cabbin Fever and 5 Alarm are all plastic. The fold-out ramp on the Cabbin Fever is VERY thin and feels extremely fragile so be very careful with it if you have one/get one. It will absolutely not survive a drop.
I think I'm good on Hot Wheels for now, lol.

Also, I was mistaken, it wasn't restored (as of 2009, at least), just re-painted.

Ebay definitely isn't where I would go if I'm looking for Hot Wheels/Matchbox unless literally nowhere else I look has what I want, especially for new (less than five years) stuff. Sellers and scalpers know what people want and are interested in and it reflects in their pricing. The sad part is that people still buy them at a massive markup anyway.
>>
>>11808923
>Ebay definitely isn't where I would go if I'm looking for Hot Wheels/Matchbox unless literally nowhere else I look has what I want
>unless literally nowhere else I look has what I want
This is funny to me, because I can only find what I want maybe 10% of the time. Every retail store has the same pegwarmers for months on end. I try to stick to only buying what I find in person, which has definitely lead to some pleasant surprises, but on the whole "what I want" is almost never an option UNLESS I go to ebay.

Even trunk sales, collection venders, or flea market stalls are fuckawful nowadays, since most of them look at ebay to inform their prices. The internet ruins everything.
>>
>>11809152
There's a guy at my local flea market who usually has a decent selection and reasonable (albeit marked up from retail) prices, but he almost exclusively deals in Hot Wheels and M2s. Every now and then I see him with a Mini GT or a Greenlight or something, but that's very rare. His primary market is Hispanics who like their BMWs and Lambos so he definitely caters to that.
>>
>>11809152
>>11809162
I find that a lot of genuine collectors/traders/sellers have just been pushed out of the market by profit-focused resellers who need the income to support their lifestyle, which may or may not include having a real job. If you're lucky, you can maybe find ONE vendor who is reasonable and prices their stuff to move, and thus always has new/interesting stock. The posers will have fancy stalls that just always have the exact same shit on display, because they're waiting for an idiot with more money than sense to come along and buy their overpriced, scalped goods.

I find this is true for almost anything collectible: diecast, toys, video games, vinyl, etc. The majority of sellers are posers looking to make money, and the majority of buyers are posers trying to purchase an identity. Or also just make money.

Most of them weren't that bad honestly, I do know I overpaid for the 5 Alarm and the FJ40, but they were still worth it to me at least. Even then, still not really expensive in an absolute sense, just compared to the $2 they would've originally sold for. I can understand how rarity pushes prices up, and they were all new-in-blister, so there's that. Shipping is the real killer, but it has to get to me somehow.
I've seen some that sell for like $40+, that's crazy to me. Nothing I got was anywhere close to that.
Where would you go, if not Ebay?
Anyways, here's the 914. Real Riders are cool, they roll way quieter than regular plastic wheels, and since they have some grip they naturally track straight. Interestingly you can still drift them fairly easily, there isn't as much friction as I thought there would be. Maybe being an off-road-style tread with little nubs on it helps by reducing the contact area.
To my knowledge, it's an original design, not based on any real 914. To their credit, they made the ugliest Porsche actually look cool. The flared fenders, trunk lid delete, and all the extra external parts (bull bars, lights, jerry cans, etc.) help to break up the silhouette and distinguish the front from the rear. It's a small change, but I think making the rear roof pillars the same colour as the body also helps it look better.

They're all equally retarded. Why would I want to buy an intentionally worse-looking, fucked-up version of a cool car? Their only purpose is to appeal to children and manchildren secondaries.

Is there a market for concept cars in diecast form, or are we better off printing 3D models of them?
>>
>>11811972
>Can I hope or am I screwed?
Probably screwed.
HW seldom re-issues stuff, especially the "premium" pay-extra models. They're trying to keep collector values inflated by making the car you want a rare commodity.

If you don't mind a loose one there's a few on Mercari for as low as $7..
>>
has anyone here ever tested a 4x6 lego car on a hot wheels track?
i don't have any tracks myself so i can't say

Really? I'd buy that in a heartbeat provided it's not broken. I just want to figure itself.

Found these two at a Canadian Tire, '96 Dodge Viper GTS and Twin Mill Gen-E. Deleting the mills from the Twin Mill is kind of stupid but still looks cool, and the Year of the Snake livery is just cool. The wiki says the Viper is metalflake but to me it looks almost like spectraflame, not sure what's going on there.
>>
>>11813101
>I'd buy that

Just curious, did you find what you were looking for?
>>
>>11819206
Viper is not spectraflame. It's standard metalflake same as real car. Btw Viper GTS is and amazing cast, true 1/64 scale, proportions, detailed headlights and taillights. Possibly one of the best mainline of the last year.

I just picked up the purple variant from my flea market guy. I would have preferred Devil Z blue of course, but it still looks pretty cool and the proportions don't bother me as much as like HW Tooned or Car Tuned.

>Amazing cast
Yeah I noticed but forgot to mention, it's kinda fuckin sick, even the gas cap is there. Really detailed casting, looks more like a silver series than a mainline.
>Standard metalflake
The paint may be metalflake but they've definitely done something different, it looks nothing like any of my other metalflakes. It looks almost iridescent under strong lighting. If I squint I think I can just barely make out the metal flakes, but the visibility of the grain is borderline at best, it's like it's all buried deep under the surface or something. It looks pretty sweet in any case.
>>
>>11796193
If I can hopefully, I got recently lucky with getting the rest of the silver series, and finding a nice little Arizona Masda at a gas station near me, Then luck came to me again when i was at good will and spotted a Mcdonalds spine buster.

It was indeed pippa

VW Beetle maybe. Basically every main brand has it, and countless of off-brand copies.

Matchbox, Majorette, Corgi, Hot Wheels, Zylemex, Siku, Yatming, Welly, Maisto, Edocar, Schuco, Norev, Greenlight, Johnny Lightning, Revell, RealToy, MCToy, Hongwell, Tomica, Sohbi, Playart, Kintoys, Summer, Tai Cheong, Kinsmart, Wiking,

Fun little fact about these is I only started collecting them because I saw that Ford GT and was in love. Didn't know it was a silver treasure hunt. Since then I've been collecting Nightspeeds and Ferraris too. Got the black SF90 Stradale today too, nice case.

Pricing stuff to move can be a money making strategy also. Walmart makes billions on relatively low margins. Supply and demand ultimately determine market values. Resellers have little control over average going rates or else they could sell any random item at any price they wanted. Resellers sometimes get stuck with product that they end up selling at a loss.

>>11826534
Oh shit, I wonder why they did that. All I can think of is preventing breakage or factory production ease, which actually reminds me: why does the Twin Mill II that I just bought look like this? The chassis is bent so it can't even roll.
>>
>>11827411
The Ford GT, Aston Martin and Mach Speeder, perhaps. I wish the X-cceleron had an opaque cockpit with little lights stamped on like how it looks on the card. I got lucky and found the green Gordon Murray.
