/RAPT/ General - Strike a pose! edition (seriously these figures have a wide stance).
Welcome to the RAPT general.
This general is mainly for these franchises. You can talk about modern lines (except for NECA), but the main focus is on the older vintage stuff from Kenner, Toy Island, etc.
Discussion of the films and other media is also welcome.
Discussion of other similar films and toylines like Rambo, Last Action Hero, Congo, Demolition Man, even Waterworld, is cool. Especially if it pertains to part swapping, customs, or features for wishful toylines you'd like to see.
NECA posting is off-topic, and should be ignored.

I didn't even know it existed. Or maybe I did read about it in Toyfair mag back in the day and forgot it existed.
And on my first search, I find an eBay listing for two other variants I forgot/didn't know about. Were there any others?

Those look rad. If the Green one were a little more vibrant it could look like a Predator vision variant.
I'm surprised they didn't do an all black version, maybe if the line had done better.

>I didn't even know it existed.
It's says on the box of the top one it's a Japan limited edition version, so these must have been specifically for that market. They do love their clear variants.
I wish more Sofubi figures of these franchises would come out. Could you imagine a Movie Monster Series style Xenomorph and Predator? They'd be wicked.

From the few sources that mention them, it appears so. Crazy that they are barely documented. Most wikis don't mention them, and Figure Realm doesn't list them. Whoever did the sculpting on this figure for Kenner did some truly gorgeous work. The shark motif on the head is great while also bringing in design elements of the Warrior and Queen heads. I also really like the angular details on the ribcage.
>>

It's a shame because NECA's licenses so coherently adhere to a kind of genre that you could probably get away with a thread just covering 80s action sci fi horror franchises and have stuff from other companies in it. Maybe someday we will evolve as a species enough.

I was always amazed that almost every single Kenner Aliens figure from the '93 line had at least two gimmicks per figure, with the exceptions being the AVP two-pack (although that has a screen accurate translucent dome), and the Scorpion Alien only having the burst apart gimmick, all the others have extra stuff going on, Snake alien had the bendy wire body and snapping jaw, Gorilla had water blasting head and grabby arms, Flying Queen had the flapping wings and snapping foot. All great stuff, and none of it interfered with regular play.
I knew I was getting older though when I realised I couldn't press the Flying Queen's wing flap button down all the way without crushing my thumb in between the wings.

I wonder how many kids actually saw the RAPT films. for me I think there was just so much advertising or ads on tv for that stuff, you didn't need to see them to be interested because the designs were so cool.

>I wonder how many kids actually saw the RAPT films.
I can't remember when exactly I first saw all the films but I'd definitely seen T2, RoboCop, Aliens, and most importantly to me Predator before I was 6, because I remember my parents buying me the figures while they were still at retail and I had seen those films by that point. My parents did a great job of explaining that the films were all make-believe when I was super young, so I was never frightened, instead I became fascinated by trying to figure out how they did the things I saw on screen.

I saw all of the originals as they came out on VHS except Alien, which I didn't see until after I saw Aliens, which wouldn't have been until the late 80s.
The first time we rented Terminator, the tape was damaged so we couldn't watch it until the following week.
When we rented Predator, I somehow missed the opening minute which shows the Predator arriving from space, so the appearance of the alien creature was a surprise in what was seemingly a regular action movie with weird thermal camera scenes that didn't make sense until he appeared.
No unique story for Robocop. I just fuckin loved it.

Now Alien/Aliens was a journey to discover. I was aware of the sequel's existence because of some interview with "the chick from Ghostbusters" that I saw on some daytime tv show when I was home sick one day in 86, and during the interview, they showed a clip from the movie, and of course it was part of the final showdown with the Queen. I never caught the name of the movie, but holy shit did that glorious beast stick in my memory. I remember seeing the VHS cover at the video store, but it was just some chick holding a little girl, so it never interested me.
Fast forward a couple of years, and after watching a movie one night, i flick it over and there it is. That creature from the interview that stuck in my memory. And it's got the chick from Ghostbusters, but she's also carrying a little girl, just like that VHS cover at the video shop.
And the name of the movie is Aliens.
I have now pieced it all together.
Rented it the next week, watched it, and figured out that it was a sequel, so the following week when I returned it I asked the owner if he had the original movie. Of course they did!
Saw T2 and Alien 3 in the cinema. Also Robocop 3, but the less said about that, the better.

original colors, no contest. Giger's designs are iconic for a multitude of reasons and his artwork is haunting on it's own, but the kenner design team just fully understood how to take all that worked about his motiefs and make them feel right at home in a toy box. They did with aliens and predator what they did with JP, and the end result is simply enchanting.
>>
>>11812752
I like that they were able to incorporate the design motif of the Queen's crest into the Facehugger design. Also making it so that the legs sit asymmetrically adds just a little more life to the toy.

Speaking of Kenner doing interesting colour choices, here are the two versions of their "Ultimate Predator" the two-pack version on the left and the single release on the right. I know the one on the left is kinda more screen accurate with the colours and definitely has more paint, but I think I prefer the single release version. It just pops on the shelf more. Although that could be personal bias talking as I had the single version as a kid and only picked up the two-pack version a couple years back.
I don't have the Alien from that set because I don't really like the way they did that figure because it's just the Runner/Dog Alien in an upright stance and no dome. It's a shame they didn't take the opportunity to revisit doing another Big Chap, or do an Aliens style Warrior.

Also as a fun little aside, I definitely enjoyed pairing up the Predator with Hulk for some battles when that film came out. Interestingly these two figure actually scale pretty well based on how big the characters are in their respective films.
I miss this era of large vinyl rotocast figures, sure the articulation is all over the place (the Predator figure only moves at the shoulders), but they have such excellent sculpts and shelf-presence at a really reasonable price.

I really don't like the design for this character, and not just the dreads, but the armour itself, it looks less like Predator armour and more like generic "alien hunter" armour you'd find in an Asylum film. The original Stan Winston design had this mix of elegant and industrial look, Predator 2 made the armour slightly more ornate, but over the decades Predator armour has just become generic metal plates with angled lines all over it. Just look at the wrist blades, the original design looked wicked, like it wouldn't just cut you, it would tear through the flesh, Dek's blades just look like segmented spikes. Also where is the fucking fishnets?

Thanks for sharing your discovery, I'd never imagine these twomwould pair so well. Hard to even imagine a modern boy's franchise making something like these two.

You know what the wildest thing about this photo is? That the tiny little Micro Machines Big Chap is probably more expensive to buy now than the HiYa RoboCain.
>>
>>
>>11821624
I never saw those Micro Machines sets at retail because I don't think they got a local release. I did see them at a comic and collectibles store in my local city back then, which was also the only place I ever saw the Kenner Queen Hive playset, and scoffed at the prices they wanted for them. I was tempted a couple of times when I was cashed up, but I could never pull the trigger. If I had a time machine, that would be one of the first things I would tell myself is worth altering the timeline for. That and warn myself that my parent's divorce will be hell, and to cut all ties with them when it happens.

>I did see them at a comic and collectibles store in my local city back then, which was also the only place I ever saw the Kenner Queen Hive playset, and scoffed at the prices they wanted for them.
There's a store that has them near me, their just loose in bags, and they're asking like 90s bucks for them. But this store over-charges for everything because they don't really have any competition. They were also asking between 70 and 120 bucks for some RoboCop Ultra Police figures. I want them, but I'm not getting bent over a barrel for them.
>>
>>11821760
Yeah, the store I saw them at was the most overpriced collectibles store in Melbourne (for any Aussie in the thread, I'm talking about Minotaur) and if I remember correctly, the transforming playsets were about $70 and the little packs were $30 in local dollarydoos, so about 3x what they usually would have cost at retail. This was in the mid-late 90s that they had them. These days the transforming head goes for close to $300 roobucks before shipping.

Ah yeah, I stopped shopping at Minotaur, partially because the prices were bullshit, but also because the customer service sucked ass. You'd go in there and they'd act like they were better than you if you asked anything or shared an opinion while chatting at the register.
I was talking about Lobo's, that store has a great selection, but nothing ever moves because they charge at least double whatever anything is worth. But they have that big fancy Kenner Star Wars display that brings them great PR. Fuck those guys. It sucks not having any real variety in store choice here.

Oh shit, we are both from Melbourne. Well, formerly for me. I'm out bush these days.
>You'd go in there and they'd act like they were better than you if you asked anything or shared an opinion while chatting at the register.
That was why I ditched them. Terrible customer service. The only place that was worse was this dumpy comic shop that was down the Parliament end of Bourke St. I swear the dude that ran it was the archetype that Comicbook Guy in The Simpsons was based on.
>I was talking about Lobo's
Lobos is fucking awesome just to browse like it's a museum. It was the one place that I have ever seen an original Eternia playset from MOTU set up. But yeah, they seriously overcharge. Unlike Minotaur, the guys there are really friendly and down for a chat, even if you aren't buying anything.

Classic Comics, yeah. I bought like one graphic novel and a keyring from there once. All Star is still kicking though and they're good.

I got Aron's Collectables in Blackburn those guys used to work at Lobo's then started their own place. Fucking awesome guys. If you're into Doctor Who they occasionally get actors from the show in to do signings.

>Classic Comics
That was the one. I only ever bought a couple of back issues I couldn't find anywhere else and Manga Cyber Violator from there. I'm not surprised it's gone with the attitude that guy had.
>All Star is still kicking though and they're good.
The two guys that started All Star used to work at Comics R Us in the late 90s when it was in Russel St and for a while when they moved into the upper floor of the old Minotaur building. Absolute top dudes.
>I got Aron's Collectables in Blackburn those guys used to work at Lobo's then started their own place
They might have been the guys I was talking about, because they weren't there the last time I went to Lobos. I can't remember their names, but whenever I'd go in for a browse I'd end up just talking nerd shit for an hour with them. If it's them, I'm glad they are doing well.

Don't interact with him. That's what he wants.
In other Alien news, I bought the Figlite Facehugger which is now in my private warehouse, and now that it's come back into stock, I'm thinking of getting the xeno egg to complete the set. It feels crazy spending that much on wind up toys when those things were the cheapest thing as a kid, but I don't care. Facehugger goes brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
