Would you agree with a certain man who believes Marvel Legends is at its lowest, worst year they have had? I don't really understand his perspective given some of the really bad early years of Legends. Decided to grab retro Dark Phoenix while she was still relatively easy to come by. I like the yellow for the arms and legs better than the gold they used for the regular Phoenix figure, but I think the red should probably be a little darker. I may also try swapping the head for another Jean with more normal hair at some point.

I do know people who liked Cypher, funnily enough, including myself. But he was always in a weird place because he's the kind of character who doesn't slot easily into a "traditonal comic team" and would make more sense as the kind of character who's in more of a support role, who usually sticks back at base unless they specifically need his expertise in the field. Which there's room for in a logical sense, but comics fundamentally run differently to where a lot of writers seem unwilling or unable to blur the divide between "main characters who kick ass" and "the supporting cast who can do cool non-asskicking things but then the second another writer that doesn't care as much gets ahold of the book they immediately get forgotten entirely."

But also to be fair, The New Mutants were decidedly not a traditional team, and basically a ragtag group of students and friends, and so it tracks that they generally didn't immediately see the logic in leaving Doug behind all on his own because he was the least fighty of them, and didn't want to leave their friend out. Especially since he COULD become a combatant when he combined with Warlock, but when Warlock wasn't around, well, we saw how that went.

Regardless, it's been said a number of times that there were getting a lot of letters from readers that did hate Cypher and want him gone, it wasn't just one guy pretending he was hated. Either there was a divided audience where half the readers hated him, half loved him, or it's just another case of reader contrarianism where an unpopular character gets killed and then suddenly everyone decides they liked him after all.
