Got my first 888 about a month ago, love it to bits.

Got myself a magicyoyo k1 last month. Never played with ball bearing yoyos before, they are fun. I have since learned how to bind and do a brain twister, and managed to pull DNA some times with the hubstacks, but learning is slow as I'm already over 30 and lack full coordination.
I had only played with shitty fixed yoyos, so having one sleep, and come back with such strong feedback when pulled, is really new and fun. I did also get a non-responsive bearing, but I've been first practicing with the responsive one. Any tips on which tricks and positions I should learn first?

isn't using these fancy newfangled ones cheating? you aren't really yo-yo'ing

It's more like a different category altogether, with different capabilities and possible tricks, you don't call nascar cheating because they are racing with more than their legs do you?

You’re off to a good start. I learned my tricks from the sites Yoyotricks and Yoyoexpert, they have tutorial playlists in order of difficulty. I suggest these tricks the most: Breakaway, Trapeze, Double or Nothing, Forward Toss, Loop the Loop

I got a yomega raider and a fireball like I had as a kid in the 90s. As a 40yo dad it's still fun showing my kids tricks. One rule, no youtube/tutorials. We had to learn all the tricks from the little booklet that came with the yoyo and the rest from our freinds. Much more fun

Hey guys I'm from the skateboard general on /xs/, would you say this is similar to what you guys do?

Kinda, yeah, skateboard might be one of the most similar things in that sense. They're both gear sports (a term I lifted from the Beyblade X guys) to some degree, we're both obssessed about colorful little wheels spinning on ball bearings, we both train singular tricks over and over again until we can seamlessly integrate them together into a combo, we both value stringing a lot of tricks without falling/stopping, we both eventually hit our faces, and both sports attract a lot of asians.

I was actually into skating before yoyo became my main obsession. It scratched the same itch, so to speak, with the added bonus of being something I could practice during school recess. I liked how both had "grind" tricks.

Why didn't you stick with it? Why did you choose yoyo?

My friends were always down to cruise around, but none were motivated to learn proper tricks. I learned to ollie, shuvit and drop-in, but it didn't feel fulfilling to learn alone just from YouTube tutorials. By contrast, my school friends were good at yo-yo, and taught me their own combos. It felt much more engaging.

any good bearings on aliexpress? just trying to get back into it and my skyva from a few years ago is fucked
>>

I recommend getting a bearing on YoYoExpert instead. Good picks are the center trac and the One Drop 10-ball. Can't forget a bottle of thin lube for proper maintenance.

spending 5 bucks on a bearing for a yoyo doesn't sit right with me. even the generic recommendations for skateboarders are less than that (bones reds, $3.50/ea on amazon)
