It's called Paleolords and I've been working on it for years. Finally released last week and it feels pretty crazy. Making toys was always a dream of mine that didn't seem possible but here we are. It's got dinosaurs, spacemen, and a little playset. /toy/ has been one of the few toy related sites I visit for well over a decade so wanted to share and celebrate and be ripped to shreds etc. I hope at least a few of you get a kick out of it. >inb4 buy an adno
>>11837262Good for you! I hope the line does well.
>>11837262Based, anon. That looks cool as fuck. Sincerely congrats.
>>11837262Good on you, anon. I'm not one to care for glyos stuff; But the sets are reasonably priced when compared to other glyos collector lines from what I can tell. I do like how each set comes with dedicated extra heads and limbs instead of a handful of vague half and half parts.
>>11837262Congrats dude. I remember you posting these in a "will Dinoriders ever come back" thread a few months ago. I hope it does well, because we need more toylines like this.I just checked the website. Do you guys ship internationally, or will you be hooking up with a retailer that does?
>>11837262You got to post pics of them with your feet so we know they're not AI. You can never be sure these days.
>>11837298>>11837303Thanks anons>>11837327Appreciate it man. I know Glyos isn't for everyone, but one of the big complaints I see is that a lot of the items never show clear pictures of what's included or what it's even for so tried to avoid that here. Tried to keep them affordable as well, although sets with more paint will push into higher areas. >>11837328Thanks! These are the kinds of toys I want to see as well so tried my best to make it happen(If the "if you don't like it then make your own" guy is still on the site, I did it man). And yeah, we do have international shipping. I know prices are a bitch, but I'm brand new at this and small potatoes so I don't have anyone lined up to handle it for me overseas.
>>11837262I caught a review of these on youtube the other day. You nailed this OP. All the dinos remind me alot of the kenner swamp thing line and inhumanoids. Here's hoping you see more success soon enough.
>>11837344The designs are all so endearing I wish you guys could get a cartoon off the ground. Seeing as you already did the glyos crossover, are there any other indie lines you'd want to collab with? Your astronaut dudes would look kickass fighting the Predanaut alongside Mechanaut.
Also consider working with Hawke Scheer. Mecha-Whales was so cool.
>>11837262That looks fucking neat. Will keep an eye out for.
Can you add cute waifus
Personally, I'm not interested, but i hope you succeed nevertheless OP :)
>>11837262These are great. Congratulations on making your dream a reality dawg.
>>11837262Not the kind of thing I have room for in my collection right now but but these are neat.Tiny playsets are always great.Congrats, anon!
>>11837262Got some drop night just waiting for them to arrive. How many playsets do you need to make something really great for an elevated spaceport and terrain surrounding it?
>>11837494It's ironic you posted the predanaut, it's creator David White worked on this line with me. He helped flesh out some of the more tech based designs and sculpted some of them as well. I love Hawke's work too, great shout. >>11837542Here's the big shill: we're running a pre order right now after selling out of our first wave. It ends in a few days on our site, paleolords dot com.>>11837555I legit was working on it but was having trouble translating a cute waifu into a 1 inch tall fat chibi figure shape. It's not off the table though, just sidelined! Thanks anons, you rock. This might be the most positive thread I've ever seen.
>>11837686Fucking awesome anonI'd say 3 total is a sweet spot for an ideal setup, but you can do some really crazy things with 5 if you wanna be extra. I'll post some pics in a bit.
>>11837692>I legit was working on it but was having trouble translating a cute waifu into a 1 inch tall fat chibi figure shape. It's not off the table though, just sidelined!I'd suggest looking at Nikke: Goddess of Victory chibi characters. Good smile also does great chibi redesigns including Nikke. A female astronaut/space marine with alternate alien serpent would stay in line with these designs
>>11837262Dang this is really cool, congrats. I’m not into chibi stuff like this enough to purchase but can still appreciate the designs and colors. Is there any “lore” to these characters?
>>11837692>I legit was working on it but was having trouble translating a cute waifu into a 1 inch tall fat chibi figure shalook at this>>11837700I sugest anime gooners stop suggesting retarded shit. op's toys look simple, nikke models are complicated even when chibified. look at whats on store shelves once in a while
>>11837692>It's ironic you posted the predanaut, it's creator David White worked on this line with meI had no idea! You indie guys always blow my mind. You're all out there living my dream. Do you have any advice for guys who want to make their own toys? Also, have recent manufacturing advances opened any new avenues for indie toy production beyond 3D printing? I'd love to hear about your thoughts on domestic production too.
>>11837692>but was having trouble translating a cute waifu into a 1 inch tall fat chibi figure shapeTake influence from the past to realize the future.
>>11837715NTA but that's a solid example to pull inspo from. Bokchoy boys would work too. Now I'm reminded of the old sushi pack cartoon.
>>11837265Amazing anon. I have to say, the "Caustic Marsh" majorly tickles the dino part of my brain because of the storytelling in it.
Congrats to you dino-bro!!Can you give a ballpark cost to bring product to market? What was the most challenging part of the process? Why did you ditch the Kick Starter model? Will you be running any classic onell colorways (Hades, EMD, Glyaxia II)?
>>11837262>i made a toyline /toythat's amazing. It's my dream come true...But anon please write a story of how you did that?i'm truly interested. How did you start it? What obstacles you faced? How did you do that?Anon please we need a cool story!
>>11837708Thanks! Yeah there's lore and a story that will get released over time. Commander Relgar and his Arkship Aeronauts scour the cosmos on the trail of a secret, ancient civilization aboard the massive Arkship Paleos. They collect organisms along the way and incorporate them into life aboard the ship. When a new signal brings them to this uncharted primordial world they discover something buried deep beneath the surface etc etc etc. it goes on and on and hits lots of classic sci fi tropes but hopefully with some interesting wrinkles along the way. >>11837931Thanks anon. This entire line was built as playsets from the ground up so that every set can tell a story in a small package. I'm glad it's hitting! >>11837806>>11838069>>11838123I appreciate it everyone. I will say that the most fun and satisfying part of the process for me has been designing things and seeing them brought to life. The good news is that you can do this relatively cheaply, especially now. Depending on your skills you could design and create something entirely on your own, or get it part way and collaborate with artists to get it all the way there. 3D printing, and even tabletop manufacturing, and garage level toy production like seen with The Craftsman has come so far so fast that I think you would be very happy with the results after some trial and error in both design and materials. Turning into a full factory level production toy is a different beast altogether. I'd say on the low end of things you're upgrading from a few thousand $ to 10-20x that to go through more traditional channels.
>>11838069>Most challenging? For me letting go of certain things comes in at the top, although there were many difficulties along the way. This project took many years and I grew very attached to how certain things looked, or designs, or parts included, or functionalities they were supposed to have, or even entire characters planned, that to have to compromise on things and change what I loved due to things that were either impossible or way too expensive from a production standpoint was very difficult. >Why no KS?Everyone else involved believed it to be a terrible idea. The 15% KS takes off the top mixed with all the various additional upfront production costs associated with, essentially, an entire year or two's worth of products in one go made it a very unlikely bet. I'm a gambler at heart but if a bunch of people who have been successful in the very unforgiving toy industry tell you something you should probably listen. >Classic colorways? Here and there but I'm more interested in original colors creatively. There's not a lot of work or thought involved in just copy pasting existing colorways, although I do have some favorites that I'm hopeful to get to eventually.
>>11837698>but you can do some really crazy things with 5 if you wanna be extra. I'll post some pics in a bit.Any chance to do this?
>caught up on everything online on theseThis stuff is the absolute tits, OP! So impressed. The sheer thoughtfulness of the playability is wonderful. Really wanna pick up multiples.I’m totally new to Glyos though; how does this PVC-based stuff feel/handle versus other toys I’m more used to like Transformers and Diaclone? I heard you mention on a stream letting the pieces “rest/reset” after doing a bunch of reconfiguration?
>>11838396So this here has 4 bases and 3 ships>>11838272And the pic attached here is 5 bases stacked into a little mountain with the edges offset to get ledges at multiple levels. I don't want to misrepresent anything though, there's no snap together or direct interlocking feature, they just can organically tile and be stacked in certain ways. I always disliked small scale toys with very obvious connectors that took up space because it always felt incomplete to me, so wanted a single base to stand alone without any real obvious edges. I'll post a couple more soon. >>11838730Thank you so much! Glyos PVC is a somewhat more maleable, heavier material than the more rigid ABS that diaclone/transformers I'm familiar with are made of. They are very strong, there's old YouTube videos from when Glyos first came out of people throwing them out windows and against walls as hard as they can and they're fine. Building with them can be something of a learning curve as it can take some real strength to pop parts together. People will sometimes use tools like a pry bar, lego brick separator, or round needlenose pliers to aid in building so your fingers don't get wrecked. I would very much compare the experience to getting used to playing guitar, it will absolutely test your fingers at first. The result is generally very strong connections that you could play with without any fear of anything falling off, or even toss in a backpack or your pocket and it would still hold together perfectly. When I mentioned letting parts reset, miniscule differences in the production process sometimes lead to certain pegs/ports being ever sk slightly different in size. But since the PVC is malleable, a "stretched" port from a larger peg will return to its normal size quickly. This is not something that happens all the time or with every connection, just something that you'll run into occasionally and quickly resolves itself. I know this is a long winded explanation but hope it helps!
>>11838272With Paleo Lords out now do you have any other major aspirations in mind? Will you keep the line going as long as you can or move onto a new project when the chance presents itself?
>>11839023Both, because of the swappable parts and building elements in the line new colors and styles of figures get a bit more juice than repaints of most standard toylines. We also have a variety of other new molds at various stages of development so there will be new releases for as long as there is interest. I also have other toy ideas that I've been waiting to delve into, some are fully fleshed out and I've wanted to make for years, but I didn't want to really get started until Paleolords was on good footing.
>>11837262these are really cool. congratulations. i'm going to buy some for my son! great designs. keep it up!
>>11838749>I know this is a long winded explanation but hope it helps! That does help, thank you! Too much, if anything. Damn, preordering the reissue of my “one that got away” Diaclone set was meant to be my only big purchase this month but I just can’t not get behind this now.I just have one thing to ask even if the answer’s likely that they’re long gone but, like getting James Groman on board as a designer, “if you don’t ask you don’t get” lol… I absolutely love that teal dimetrodon you had in the preview pack; is that ANY possibility there might be a spare one still lurking somewhere and might I be able to give you some extra cash to sneak it in with my order if so?
>>11839120Thanks man. And you haven't missed out, they were only ever sold in person at a show. The remaining stock of those preview sets will be put online later in the year in a future release that shares some of those colors.
>>11839138Sweet! There’s something about that teal lad with just the red eyes painted in that hits really nicely, even though the lack of paint was just for IRL time constraints.September/October can’t come soon enough! Well, actually they can I do have a whole turdload of stuff I’m supposed to get done by then but ykwim
How often will the Arkship and Base pieces be run? Every drop or every so often?
>>11839173There will be some variance to what, how, and how frequently certain molds show up. I wouldn't say every drop but often, so long as they sell!
>>11837262These are so adorable. I love the colors and the gnarly-cute molds. I'm saving money right now and expect a big shipping quote due to location but I will keep tabs on this.I wish you guys the best of success!
>>11837807damn
>>11837692>I legit was working on it but was having trouble translating a cute waifu into a 1 inch tall fat chibi figure shape.Would a Samus situation be easier to pull off at that scale? A cool space suit/helmet might be easier to stylize for her, would also cohere well to what you already have going on. Maybe make her a spacedino wrangler/rancher/trainer? She could come with a pet dino with a scifi looking saddle (equippable mech armor?), some treats to feed it (alien plants grown in a garden? Could get some huge herbivores added to the lineup), and/or a hatching egg baby dino kinda thing. I'm thinking Littlest Pet Shop sorta acessories/theming, but badass neon scifi dinos. Your color choices are fantastic by the way, I love how simple you keep the use of color too.
>>11839633>>11839624ok well nevermind looks like this beat me to it lol
>>11839624Perfection
>>11839633you make everything sound as gay as those zoomers in the glyos discord
>>11837262Good on ya, Anon. I wish you the best of luck!
>>11839858>>11839607Thanks anons>>11839624lmao 100/10 I'm gonna have to post design ideas on here more often for feedback like thisstill, proportions are off which is the issue I was running into. The arms and head need to be more or less compatible with the other figures and if they are, either the body is too large or they are too small. Still, I love this. Thank you for this, not what I was expecting to see when I returned. >>11839633Thank you anon! Some of that stuff is in early stages, very dependent on how well everything does over time. Due to the nature of production the things you're talking about are more like 3 or 4 new molds instead of 1, and while I've tried to come swinging out of the gate with a bunch of stuff this process is extremely expensive and any future new mold items will likely be a very slow trickle instead of the table slam that this first batch was.
>>11837262This is really cool, I love the little helmet guy and the ship! Would buy but 40 bucks shipping to Europe + taxes is just too much, not your fault I know. Wish you all the best and maybe you will expand to new markets someday!
>>11840312Yeah as I was drawing it I could see how difficult it would be to translate the stubby body into a more curvy female one (and still keep most other parts unchanged). Maybe you could just change the head into a helmetless female face and keep everything else the same. Also I didn't say this with my other post but I really do like what you've made. The cute stubby designs really scratch an itch for me.
>>11837262Will you make a mountable dinosaur that the spacemen can ride like a cowboy on a horse or is that gonna be too expensive to make? Also, what was the hardest or most fun part of this journey?
>>11841789Thanks anon. I'll keep at it for sure.>>11841794It's on the list for sure, but something like that would be a ways out and dependent on continuing success. Most fun part is designing stuff and then having it in functional 3D set in front of you. Hardest part is all the compromises that had to happen to get here.
My name is Mick from RetroBlasting, I dress like Indian Johns and one single video from me can make or break an toy. Will you pay me to promote your product?
>>11844427Your mother will pay me to obliterate her neglected and tender pussy
hey twerp. are you making the dinosaurs as realistic as possible to modern paleontology, and if so, what makes your pea sized brain think that it even is accurate to orthodox paleontology? Twerp. -best,mom.
>>11844469Yes mom they are scientistically accurate I went to the Colorado airport and followed the hidden dino signs to the tunnels to deep beneath the barrier where they keep the alien dinos and got skin samples to make them it's all legit
>>11837262Neat, how’d you get these manufactured? I have a sculpt for a female figure that I know would sell well (it’s coomer adjacent) but I don’t know how to go about getting it made.
>>11846021I had them manufactured through a friend who has been making toys for decades after me buying those toys for like 15 years and meeting up at 30 toy conventions with them. There are companies you can contact for toy manufacturing, but the easier they are to communicate with the more expensive they will be. Like HappyWorker is a Canadian based toy manufacturer which can do literally everything for you, and since they're based in North America they're easy to deal with, but be prepared for massive order minimums and costly expenses at every single turn. A six figure cost for anything that's not a small statue. I would say genuinely that the best bet is to go through people you know, like I did. "But I don't know anyone" Ok, well, start. There's a large convention circuit with literally dozens of shows a year, a good amount of indie or semi indie toy creators go to lots of them. There's also like, the guys making boutique star wars toys through factories etc. There's companies that got their start off Kickstarter with just a handful of people in them that are very interactive with their fan bases. I don't know much about the coomer scene so I can't help with any specifics but I'd say you definitely want to go through people who are familiar with what you're trying to make. Factories will say they can make anything, and they'll make it, sure, but if they don't already have similar toys dialed in the output is likely to be abysmal. It would also be helpful to literally go to the factory in person to help learn about the production process and walk them through exactly what you'd want and don't want while learning exactly what they can and can't do. Be prepared to spend anywhere from 20-100k+ in order to make it happen. I know this is all vague but it's such a risky, expensive venture that I would highly recommend cultivating a relationship with existing toymakers, be someone they recognize, through toy pics and purchases and in person.
>>11837262Any chance of a restock?
>>11846279This was the restock; essentially an MTO window after the initial stock sold lightning fast. Bro’s gonna be making plenny more colourways though, I am SURE.
