How is Vallejo's pigment binder for using pigments for effects on models?

I also learned of Vallejo's official wet palette and their DIY wet palette video is still public.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMPn5po5-m0
What kind of plastic container is that anyways? What would that container be built to store specifically anyways?

Are Vallejo's post reformulation paints still as good as the pre reformulation? I'm curious about their model and game color metallics and whether their metal color paints have been modified.

Water

I switched from an "official" wet palette to a box of Ferrero Collection (like a gift box thing) because it's see through and perfectly fits the sponge and paper of my Green Stuff World wet palette (they are all pretty much in the same size unless you are looking at the huge ones). So I'm using the sponge and paper refills in a chocolate box.

welp, I might just trash this one. I stuck it out through retarded parts breakdown, warped pieces, dogshit instructions, never ending mold lines, sloppy fit and edges as sharp as a bar of soap. And now, majority of the way through the build, I realize the clear sprue is missing. It's only 4 parts, but they would be highly visible on flak 88. It's no wonder this kit was on sale for like half off at spruebrothers. Border models can suck a fat fuckin chode.

Here's an example of their fuckery. See that massive line down the middle of the flatcar? It's because the wood deck is two parts, with each one requiring you to saw about a 3rd of the deck off. I could fill and sand like the sides of the flat car (because of course they come in two parts requiring heavy modifications with a join down the middle) but I wanted to see what it would look like before I started obliterating the wood grain texture. I guess now I don't need to bother.
>>
>>11853840
>Border models
ahhh yeah I know that game. I built their IJA tiger 1 and the upper hull and lower hull had a litteral half inch gap around all the sides. I ended up filling it out within styrene rods and using every clamp I own to get that fucking thing to fix. it's weird because their figures are really nice and the sculpting quality (on the tiger at least) was really nice. but it's like they don't know how to properly engineer a kit when it comes to the fitting.
the missing clear parts is actually pretty shitty, didn't happen to me but still that sucks dude.

>>
>>11854000
it is entirely possible I lost the clear parts myself as I've moved the kit around a couple times. I've boxed the kit up and will decide its fate tomorrow. Lookin like a 90% chance of gettin slam dunked into a garbage can

I am slowly working on that lifelong airport in 1/144 project. I am final on wanting to do Kai Tak and I have a means of going about it. in stages. I am in a bit of a predicament though. I want the first model to be a 747SP in Mandarin Airlines livery. I found some decals Made in Mexico, but obtaining a kit will be a pain.
My options are:
>Unobtainium Eastern Express kit
>Authentic Airliners resin kit (might as well not exist)
>Welsh Models Vac/Resin kit.
I don't mind resin (though I will get a resin kit to build soon), but vacform has me worried. Is there anything that I should know about as far as building, preparation, painting, etc.?

TL;DR: Any tips for working with vac-form stuff?

>"not real modeling"

>"it's now a competition on who can buy the more expensive printer, not who can build better"
Pops scratchbuilds sailboats though, he's part of the modeling culture to whom painting is an afterthought and weathering is an unknown.

I tried to throw in the "you could print a thirty 1:35 jerrycans at once" argument, but he believes if you want a pile of jerrycans in your diorama, you're supposed to file out 30 vaguely jerrycan-shaped blobs of balsawood by hand. Then I assume just give them an uniform coat of olive-drab fence-paint and you're done.

just threw a 3d printed Ersatz-Triglav class into the pool.
Its gonna be a rc model so its petg printed. petg can be cut but its so ductile, you cant really sand it, it smears. so i covered the hull in spray putty to fill the print lammela and sand the putty surface smooth. details have to be put on the hull from scratch. im gonna enlarge a paper model and transfer it to poly plates.

3d prints from material which allows nice detail bends under its own weight from a certain size on.
3d print offers a lot but with tradeoffs

nothing beats a good old injection mold kit.

>3d prints from material which allows nice detail bends under its own weight from a certain size on.
This claim is based on your feeling or... ?
You can always slice and cut the models into pieces beforehand.

All that said, I do think a well designed injection molded kit with proper sliding molds that can support backside detailing, overhangs and shit are way better than any 3D printed model because you can build it how you want and little details won't be breaking off at every moment.

Probably next step gonna be
Wash, thinking of brown to bring out more yellow in the model
Filters/oil dots, will be my first try
Then pigments and fixer and I'm pretty much finished
The next step I'm gonna paint the guys that came in this set, gonna try zenithal+glazing, some trash, buy some more soviet guys and maybe make a kursk diorama later

I think i overdid chipping a little after i added more non corner ones

Unacceptably bad for a 2025 release
Every major fitting has bad tolerances
The upper and lower turret and hull barely fit together, but you can build it as the naked version with no extra armor unlike the Tamiya one

Am I missing out with modeller YouTube? I stopped watching after Owen from QuickKits stopped making videos.
>>
>>11861900
No it isn't. I am the AC autist. What Hobbyboss does and have done in a lot of the kits is this annoying thing where the landing gear gets built into the bay so the whole time you work on the model it is sticking out and potentially easy to break. It's no big deal to handle just treat it carefully. It was the same on eg the trumpeter J-20 I recently made. The YF-23 has a couple of more annoying things than that to deal with, first and foremost it needs comical amounts of weight added. I glued in two IKEA Allen keys behind the cockpit internally to make it stand flat and still had to add more weight after. Secondly, the joint between wing and fuselage is pretty hard to get smooth and I only succeeded on one side. I personally don't care all that much about rivet counting and minute accuracies but I did notice the panels are just plainly not correct on the kit, so if you're into that you gotta get cutting. It's not like there are many other offerings of the YF-23, nor all that much reference material with details.

Also it's fucking huge and is one of my only models that can't fit in any glass cabinet.

>>11861913
Stop being a little whiny bitch and learn to build. If you are a fag that only builds Vipers and Me-109s you can be whiny and only build the finest most accurate ones but if you wanna not just be local boomer you gotta get some kits that aren't perfect to start with

Guess again. I just have little tolerance for stuff that is both inaccurate and overpriced. I just cracked open picrel that was $15 (forgive me for the burgerlard money) and have compared it to scale drawings and it is pretty spot on. The Hobby Boss YF-23 is almost $100.

I get that there are few options for YF-23s, but you really don’t have to deal with inaccurate outlines if all you want is something different. By comparison the Shitaleri kit gets a better outline (even if the fit is far from perfect).

Maybe I am just too much of a sperg, I don’t know, man.
>>
>>11862697
What the hell are you on about, $100?? It's under $50. I didn't pay more than $40 for certain. Whose boomer hobby shop is scamming you?

Model kits are a starting point and you revise them until they are as accurate as you want them to be
>>
>>11862707
Cheapest I see is Trainz for $73 on sale from $82, everything else is $75 to $90.

My mistake. Sprue Brothers, Model Rectifier Corp, a couple of EvilBay sellers and Scamazon are my sources.
>>
>>11862707
>>11862697
I just checked and yes buying it from Super Hobby right now would cost $48.

Anyway I think it boils down to two schools of thought and you want the base model kit to be accurate while I just don't care all that much because I'll turn it into what I want it to be. Now for the YF-23 I just didn't care all that much but I had to for instance rebuilt one of the "corners" from scratch because the model was dropped and broke in that corner and it was no biggie, so I'd rather pick the model that's "good enough" and turn it into what I want than spend $200 for the finest resin kit known to man. The example you have with the blimp, price has simply got nothing to do with accuracy and everything to do with cost of manufacture and your tiny sprue (relatively) with all parts on one is inevitably going to be cheaper than a 1/48 clamshell style kit like the YF-23
>>
>>11862713
This is fair, but I get a bad case of sticker shock too, especially these days. I guess I could see a $40 kit in this, though, I will say that much.
>>
>>11862716
Americans are getting wrecked by import tariffs with this hobby for certain. I've not really seen all that much of a price increase in Europe, maybe there will be a marginal one now with the bitch ass anti china tariff of about $3 per item they implemented recently
>>
>>11862718
American hobby shops have always been more expensive for stuff. For a long while I imported from Super Hobby and I still plan on doing it, I just have not needed anything since the tariffs went into effect, though I would love to get some more paints and a few kits that have caught my eye (some resin kits by Brengun and some airliners from F-RSIN or Welsh Models).

The only Chinese kits that really interest me are those from Warhead Studio and some Chinese specific subjects. I just wish someone would make a wider range in both 1/144 and 1/72 (a 1/72 Y-8 or Y-9 is something needed and conversely a 1/144 JF-17 is also needed too). JL-9s or sorely lacking too (especially since they are the main aircraft of choice in Myanmar these days). Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but the war in Myanmar is so interesting and yet so rarely modeled (I guess I better be the change that I want to see, but only when more kits become available).

I tried researching it again and found nothing, I can't find the source in which I read it anymore so it was likely wrong I fear. It also claimed that they buried them but that may have been confusion with the 2012-2013 hype of RAF spitfires being buried in Burma directly after ww2.

The burying claim was a rumor from 1994, so yeah, you are getting confused. The 1990s was a transition point in Burma because of the 1988 US arms embargo, which led them to switch to Russian and (mainly) Chinese equipment. They wanted Yugoslav equipment, but Yugoslavia had their own problems.

Which reminds me, I have a YuMo G-4 tucked away deep in my stash. I am autistic about Yugoslavia and Burma, so have no clue which scheme I would build, but I am saving that one until my skills further improve anyway, so no pressure.

Regardless the current main aircraft only has a single 1/48 Trumpeter kit that you need aftermarket decals and scratchbuilding for a Myanmar aircraft (and still no PT-6 conversions for a CJ-6 like the newest ones they have).

Why do I get those black spots in place where the gate was? I did gundam before and if I cut further from the piece and then file the gate the stress mark would be barely visible or sometimes you can even rub it with your nail and it will become less visible but now I'm trying to build a tamiya bike and no matter if I cut close or far or if I file or not, I get those marks.
>>
>>11852958
I've came by and stared at his op image several times, I think the Krieger stuff looks awesome. If my hands and eyes were more cooperative I'd probably buy a kit just to ruin it with a bad paint job. Anyway, great stuff to whomever built this scene.

Painting is not hard, just get something cheap that you are somewhat interested in and practice some hand painting, then move on to airbrushing. Practice filling sanding and precise gluing too.

Before buying it, run it by us first to see whether it is good or not.
>>
>>11863148

>>
because the subject matter is gay and cringe
>>
>>11863616
Because it's gay shit for troons.
To answer your question, this shit is just what happens with metallic plastic, gundam does this too but you won't always see it since their gates aren't usually this thick.
Now fuck off back to your containment board(s).

>>11863148
Plastic does not behave the way you think it does. Bandai are doing black magic with their flow and gate design and deliberately using only color blends that will mostly work the way they want them to. Learn to sand and paint like a real model builder because you can absolutely see the defects even on Gundam if you don't turn a blind eye to it, they're just as well engineered as possible on the gate design while compromising other things like yield rates t. Mechanical engineer with many molds to my name

>>11863616
Gundam is engineered for people who dislike the full building process. Thin sprue gates, coloured plastic so people can opt not to paint and so forth. It makes them genuinely different from building a traditional kit.

I will go as far as to say that some folks here both use /smg/ and /gppg/, but I would say that if you do not take the shortcuts that Bandai allows for you to take, then you will have a good model by /smg/ standards.

However this kit looks to be car, right? You need to fill and sand a lot on car or motorbike kits because finish is the most important part of them. Are you airbushing or brush painting? The process is different depending on which one you do. I could go into all of the details above, but we have the links in the OP for a reason.

Moved out a few months ago. The models were over the past 6 years or so. In hindsight I was always putting more into the relationship and she told me several times over the years that she couldn't really return the feels. Chalked it up to her autism/bipolarism/depression back then, but should have seen it wouldn't work in the end. But hey that's autism for you, find someone that you think you can rely on and it's like shit under your shoe, really hard to let go yourself. She brought it up and I agreed it didn't work, it was pretty much as no drama breakup as it could be, were living together but otherwise no baggage like kids, pets etc.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Gee I wonder who does the best market research, Trumpeter with decades in the game, or the one local autist that still doesn't understand that resin printing and other 3D printing methods has numerous superiorities to injection molding unless you need to make thousands and thousands of an item. I used to develop medical devices for a living and we 3D printed hundreds of parts that you would probably think were supposed to be injection molded because it gave us vast amounts of benefits compared to the locked in commitment of a tool

To the anon who wanted to know what the kits from Mark I Models are like, I hope this gives you an idea. Sorry about it taking me so long. My "fear" is that in a hundred years or so these sanitized post-war schmitmars will enter fuddlore as wartime "low visibility markings", and some poor young modeler born in 2100 will have to listen to some rickety old gen beta's "look here sonny, I've forgotten more than you know" speech, about how full-windmills were only used in Spain, or some shit.
>>
>>11866694
he a cute! what scale is that?
>>
>>11866861
1/720. Airships do not have a common scale because of their obscurity, but Revell and Mark I tend to do 1/720.

OKB Grigorov and Snowman Model make 1/700 kits, Aerobase make 1/1000 kits, Revell also released a 1/200 Zeppelin NT not too long ago.
>>
>>11866868
I forgot to mention that two box scale Kirovs are available, one from Border Model and one from Kaizo. They are both intended to build like GunPla (as most of the folks in this thread shudder).

One thing about blimps that I am just learning is that the are really awkward to paint, since the only parts to hold are the fins (delicate separately fitted parts) or the gondola. The issue is that blimp gondolas make for unergonomic handles. At least I have the envelope and fins painted. I just wish I hadn't used a meme technique for finish (which was black basing for just some cheap Humbrol Aluminum that I had laying around). At least the gondola and engines will be getting Vallejo. Aluminum and Olive Drab are the last Humbrols I have and I have three Model Masters left too. While they served me well, I look forward to finally switching to Vallejo and AK fully.

By the way, the kit in question is ~$20 on Super Hobby and comes with a base, mooring mast and resin tractor (about half a pinky nail in size). It honestly isn't that bad of a buy even though the blimp is quite small (~4-4.5"). I might wind up having to get one of their zeppelins.

decided to stop trying to reanimate a corpse and just train painting on the icm 109, realized i wont manage the profipak 109e3 in 72 so just gonna build some cheap ass 1/48 planes just to train, this one will go to the bin unless i decide to make a destroyed 109 diorama in 1/48

first time trying to paint a plane, this mustard yellow is clumping like crazy

I cannot afford a 3D Printer, otherwise, I would likely be printing off kits for the folks here.
>>11866961
This is admittedly a shame. There was a resin firm doing real people scans, but they shuttered at the end of last year.
>>11867122
Shake and thin moar. I can tell you are spraying thick. What yellow is that?
>>
>>11867006
is there an advantage to this? or is just like the illusion of quality? like how ryefield throws in pe
>>
>>11867135
I guess if you keep moving the tracks maybe? But realistically not

>>11867122
You definitely need to thin more, that's also why the mottling comes out very misty and imprecise. For yellow, I recommend painting a sand color or at least mid grey before spraying to help coverage
>>
>>11867132
Atom Mustard yellow

I think it's an illusion, the primer was thick + glossy varnish was thick, but I'll try thinner later, i already tried the "try it on hand or textured paper" thing
>>11867147
I know, i painted it on grey primer, some other guide i was watching said try white i wanna try a stencil next, it doesn't matter for this one, the camo is completely fictional

moving house soon, this will be the last model I build here. anyways im almost done with the moebius 1965 dodge coronet. super good kit, I wish all "american classic" type car kits were like this. great detail, near perfect fit, and decent enough plastic quality (not much flash but decently sized mold seams). I can't wait for the immense disappointment next time I do an AMT or Revell kit

>is there an advantage to this?
for Meng, probably saves on material affected by shortages
for you, nothing unless you like doing this to your tanks but that assumes the workable tracks can hold themselves together, also there's now a high possibility a slight earthquake will send your tank rolling off the shelf unless there's a gear or something in the hull to stop the wheels
>>

The next level for American car kits is to permanently graduate to 1/24, American muscle always being one size smaller than Japanese and European just feels so wrong.

Hi I'm new to this hobby, ready to commit to large parts amount kits, anything you'd recommend that's not ancient, not small and has some nice PE or masks inside?
Aircraft/tanks
>>
>>11867656
nice, the safs is classic plus that kit you can build as a standard safs or the snowman variant. honestly the wave kits are pretty forgiving compared to older ones. I just recommend using black ca to fill in seam lines and you might want to primer the front inside cavity of the torso before assembling it completely. sometimes you get light bleeding if you go with a white base coat. it's not completely necessary but something to consider. oh and the rubber joints don't like paint for whatever reason, use a lacquer primer for those parts.
>>
>>11867699
pic related btw is a nitto kit from 97 iirc. it was a bit rough on details; especially the face, and I had to sculpt the rubber piping by hand.
>>
>>11867685
I'd recommend keeping it simple instead. PE isn't fun

Anyway, get something somewhat cheap, like the Special Hobby 1/48 D-558-1 or 1/32 Fi-103R, but any Special Hobby or KP kit with PE for $25-ish or less should be good, so if you mess it up, it is not too much of a loss.

I have not built a full resin kit before but have experience with resin parts. How retarded would it be to buy four resin kits? One is 3D printed, the others are cast, but two of the castings seem to be high quality.

>>
>>11869204
As with every ship that depends entirely on how far you wanna take detailing, there is no practical limit and you can sink 500$ into one in 350 scale.
If you wanna build it OOB then it fits well, detailing is decent (70s tooling) but still Old Tamiya, radar system is a block, Flaks are made of wooden logs and no open barrels, no details on the hull no real pannels some parts on the cranes and ladders are simply missing not just simplified.
It will be done in a week if you change nothing and it will fit but ships are meant to be improved, also don't be one of these airbrushfags that build everything and try paint it when entirely done it's a hassle with that camo and you should do it while building, at least the superstructure
>>
What are we doing
>>
>>11869406
I was thinking an AliExpress kit with wooden deck, metal barrels and some PE (25€), resin funnel (5€), pe mast/radar (10€) and some rigging

Mind you I am probably becoming a bit faggy about blimp autism at this point, but I am reaching the stage to apply decals. I just do not have any Micro Set or Micro Sol.

I probably will just DIY the solutions, since Micro Set is vinegar and water and Micro Sol is vinegar and isopropyl alcohol (1:1 for both).
>>
>>11869461
That should improve her markably, wooden deck especially, metal barrels too since it saves you from drilling and removing seams, radar and funnel will also do a lot.
I'd say DO add rails if you have done it before and or want to spend a lot of time with her, the look is worth it but it can (depends on wether its generic rails or Tirpitz specific and how many bends there are) take 1/3 or 1/2 of the effort, at least it does with 1:700 ones.
Also the camo needs to be aligned on superstructure decks

I love PE where you are supposed to attach it with functionally 0 surface area and it has to stay perfectly perpendicular
I need more engineering like this, literally why can't kits be entirely made from PE?
>>
>>11870146
A molded-on handle or hatch hinge or whatever drybrushed and recess-shaded with enamels will look about 99% of a PE part.

Maybe even better, because you'll have guaranteed overflown superglue around the PE part, which a dark oil/enamel wash will bring out "nicely".

Even though I do firmly believe in striving for greatness and doing everything with 300% extra care instead of rushing projects out the door, maybe don't listen to the boomer grognards too much. I must admit I did get my baptism of fire in this very same general and it did help me improve a lot, but at some point you must draw the line and end a project and do better on the next one. Yeah the pillow shading was ridiculous, yeah the pin marks look ass, but you have some decent armor texture that your decals follow and the chipping is half decent. Make this one your goalpost for the next one and experiment and strive for better on the next one. Take your time and try different approaches until you figure things out. Once you are able to reach a result in a month you can work on reaching the same point in two weeks and then a week. The key is not rushing out slop, but also not getting stuck in forever projects.
I just had a request for two DnD figures with a day's notice. I set a ridiculous commission price and they agreed. I was frankly amazed at what I could achieve in around three hours. Were they my models I would have spent three days and reached marginally better results. Just gotta put in the effort and magic happens.
Godspeed anon.

I guess i just like posting about it too much, I'm terminally online, thanks for the input, that's the plan

>>
>>11872360
In my experience doing several of the same type of model in a row is better at first because you can iterate on your experience, use what works and try new stuff.
If you switch to planes you will need to worry about a lot of new stuff like transparent parts and subassembly construction/painting and probably large decals.
For ships PE will most likely be a big part along with absolutely microscopic parts and a bunch of masking.
Figures will be a bunch of brush painting which is again a lot different and works best with different paints than what are best for airbrushing.
>>

>>
>>11872413
I think it looks good. You can always point to the fact that Russian/Soviet camo is rareley 100% standardized and shows lots of variation and secondly also looks different in pictures that were taken in changing light conditions. It is clear what you are aiming for and it is perfectly ok.
>>
>>11872413
I assume from the currently missing wingtips that this is a Mig-29K.

Carrier planes will be always look like patchy shit from the rough environment of being constantly at sea (let's ignore the meme right now that the Kuznetsov hasn't sailed in almost a decade an is effectively dead).

I think fading and strong panel lines are on the accurate side, as for the colors, they'll probably tone down as you keep applying weathering.

Which is also a valid way to build. The theoretical oldest King-Tiger would have been 14-16 months old by the time of the surrender, and would have in theory could have seen a maximum of ten months combat, but they probably lasted a hundred hours of engine operation and a few weeks of combat. Kinda don't want to apply the late three-color camouflage on top, this oldschool, solid green T-54 with commie star look is pretty aesthetic, but I've gone this far with my plan, so I'm sticking to it. This is the variant I'm building, photographed in 1989 during a time of nothing in particular happening.

I'm not gonna make it a political build or anything, I just think it's the most iconic and historically significant variant, like the T-80UD's in Moscow.

The kit comes with the two old-school smoke canisters in the back instead of the more commonly known two 200l fuel drums, and it looks like I could scratchbuild the one 200l drum that was put between them, but they were left off during the 1989 tank parade, so I'm leaving them off too.

Also crew figures are fucking impossible to get, chinks in 80's fatigues with what look like American T-56-6 tanker helmets, no fucking shot.
>>
>>11873051
>Which is also a valid way to build
Sure. I just think it is not the be-all and end-all. It's a trend, it is fashionable, it is also promoted by people who sell their products (nothing wrong with that). I just say that if I have to chose I would prefer a more realistic approach. So, yes. a Kind Tiger in the Aredennes should have some fresh paint under the mud (as seen in contemporary footage). And a new MiG is not bleached out. So a somewhat higher contrast is ok.

>And a new MiG is not bleached out.
Here's a good metric on paint fade:
>Hungarian Mig-29's
>all of them originally manufactured in about 1989 (maybe as early as 87) for the Soviet VVS
>USSR goes bankrupt
>planes sit on the factory airfield for years brand spanking new
>Hungary obtains them in late 1993
>Hungarians overspray the red star with the factory-spec paint colors and apply Hungarian chevrons
>darker star-shaped patch visible around the open-air paint fade
This is the contrast between fresh and four years of paint fade.
>>
Didn't post anything for the ICM 1:35 Ford 917 conversion into Japanese yet
Left is the changed grille, the star and its base are from 0.25mm PS sheet, dusty atm but will be cleaned and repainted, couldn't progress the thing as quickly as I wanted to. Right is the modified cab from behind, the biggest challenge of this build, the white area is made up of 0.25mm sheet as well to give it its more voluminous angular shape instead of the rounded one.

Mind if I ask the reasoning? As far as I understand it, the goal is to force a on recessed surfaces, but even on a full scale aircraft, those recesses are not that visible from most angles.

This maybe is not the best example, but I think this Serbian Gazelle proves my point, the panel lines are generally not a stand out feature and generally aren't on most machines (barring maybe control surfaces on aircraft and maybe tank hatches).
>>
>>11873275

supposed to say force a shadow.

Anyway, apart from the doors, engine access hatch and maybe the fuselage to tail boom seam, there really no not a "shadow". In fact, it might be might better to chip around the panel lines instead.

No pics but I acquired a shit kit with some vac-form goodies (Frog Meteor with an Airmodels conversion set) to practice on before getting the 747SP.

I did find a store stateside with some Eastern Express stock left. The Welsh kit is still more accurate (the EE kit has the wrong hump and nose), all things considered (and they also stock it, so no having to hassle with their E-Mail only ordering system). Am I insane for committing to a vac-form option when an injection kit is available, despite it being noticeable wrong?

Funny you should say that, Somali and Ethiopian T-55s and M47s met in the same battle (Battle of Jijiga) during the Ogaden War. Ethiopia was mostly M47s with some brand new T-55s (this would have been their first deployment), while Somalia had mostly T-55s and some M47s.

I did (lived in the UK between 2011 and 2013) but I know a guy in Malaysia and he has it much, much worse than I do, so I am thankful even in my situation. He has resorted to buying kits off of AliExpress, a lot of those being Hehexing/4D "1/144" (but not really) stuff and he has to buy two in order to ensure he has the enough parts to build a kit from. He spends 6-13 Ringgit per model.

I import my models, or buy secondhand. Much of what I want was never distributed stateside to start with (a lot of resin, vac, short run, et al from Europe and Asia). I value accuracy over fit, but I am easy when it comes to it, just give me the right variant and make it look correct (if I can visually tell it is wrong, then it will annoy me to no end). I just spoke to someone about custom ordering my first printed car kit (1/43 Twingo) and he agreed to print it for me. I am working on the model among other things.
>>11875646
Also some F-5 pilots were trained by Americans just before the war too. And the Soviets deployed Mi-24s for the very first time to support the Ethiopians. The list goes on and on, but African wars are wonderfully weird as modelling subjects (so is Burma, but I said this in a previous thread).

Because they make cheap kits that are average at best and sell them at prices competitive to newer toolings with better detail and oftentimes fit. I do not want to spend $35+ on a F-8 or F-14 when it contains 1970s tooled plastic complete with raised panel lines because the decals are not something bog standard. Italeri is also guilty of this, as is Revell, but those kits tend not to be over $30 at the most for larger stuff (1/48 B-17, 1/32 UH-1, et al).

I would be happier if a lot of these kits were cheaper, even checking European prices.

They do look like T56-6 helmets or maybe British AFV-73 helmets. Back in the 80s, the PLA was frequently buying small batches of western equipment for evaluation so it would be within the realm of possibility. Worse are WWIfag colour callouts, which is why I always pause before buying a WWI aircraft kit... (Excuse me for the incoming sperg-out)

For example, Manfred von Richtoften's Albatros D.III 789/16 "Le Petit Rouge" is known for many suggest variations in markings. No one shade of red is agreed upon for this aircraft either, despite it being well documented. The final Dr.I that Richtofen flew used Methuen 9 (C-D) 8, but accounts from Richtofen's squadron mates suggest a brighter shade of red and this was a a red that was on hand, while the Dr.I was finished by Fokker themselves.

Additionally, there might not have been any blue at all (or so was thought well into the 1980s), but later opinions are that there was a blue of either Methuen 24A3 or 24B4, which was standard, but even the extent of this blue is uncertain, all accounts suggesting the blue suggest that at the very least the bottom surface of the lower wing was painted this way, but so could have been the top surface of that wing or the bottom surface of the top wing (or perhaps even both). Other sources say only the fuselage was red, but then this opens up the question of what the top wing surfaces were painted as, which the argument is a camouflage of one of three varieties (the most commonly supported being dark green and light green), though dark brown and light green, and dark green, light green and Venetian red are also potential candidates.

This goes back to the nature of the film used at the time, but I could go on about that.

A worse example is the myth surrounding August Raben's Dr.I being blue... It never was, despite the claims. These claims stem from a hoax created by the forger Rodney Gerrard. The Dr.I was actually red (like all of Jasta 18's Dr.Is), but a brighter one than von Richtofen's Dr.I (about Methuen 9A8 to 10A8).

It's is an issue with UK and French types too.

I did not mean this to be a dick sizing contest. I just sperg over WWI aircraft (and spend hours researching schemes), and it frustrates me that paint callouts are always wrong, especially for aces.

France is worse than German stuff and the variance is even greater than Slavshit green.

Thank you, but this is not a job for just one person. The number of schemes are on the thousands, changing between types, forces and squadrons, even down to the pilot. Wing's Palette was like a Bible on this, but alas, it was not meant to be. I memorized German and British aces, I am trying French but it is a struggle due to imprecise hues. Horizon Blue is the worst offender, which is an underside and rigging shade that only some aircraft had and it was made up on the spot.

Also Hermann Goering lied about his own D.VII's scheme (the wings were camouflage and not white). Despite other claims, his aircraft had no yellow nose either.

My interests spread between the Montgolfier Brothers up to around 1935 (there is no hard cutoff, but I say 1935 because this is when a lot of wartime aircraft first flew, such as the B-17, Bf-109, Ju-87, Hurricane, A5M, AT-6, DC-3, Bu-133 and P-36). I am happy looking beyond that time at anything out of the ordinary.

Liveries dictate my happiness, if I see a sea of olive drab and grey, I am sad. If I see other stuff (even silver for airliners and the like), then I am happy. I get WWII to present fighters are easy to build, but the model shows that I have been to are too full of grey, green and brown. Do these folks ever tire themselves from building the same five subjects in the same schemes? (e.g every P-51 winds up being silver, every F-14 is grey, etc.). I am planning to enter a competition with some model kits I need to buy, but I need them to be bright enough to stand out. I am thinking of maybe doing a civil or SAR helicopter or potentially a brightly painted trainer.

The current niche of the past few weeks has been aircraft from countries with smaller aviation industries to have been made in the 1920s and 1930s. (Finland, Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Mexico, Greece, Hungary, Thailand and Brazil, in particular). I feel like resin kits are in my future, because of all this, but I want to be prepared for it first.

I'm in your boat which is how I ended up doing the large run of Ace Combat planes. What I would recommend if you want to look at more modern jets, is take a look at either airshow liveries (there's plenty) or particularly all the Japanese special edition liveries that are way more interesting than the shit ass air superiority grey planes that curse the land. Interestingly, if you look at the Ukrainian air force at the moment, they are putting more and more visual yellow and blue on the planes to ensure positive ID, so maybe flying circus liveries are coming back with modern sensor capabilities basically nullifying the advantage of pure grey

Laid down the basic camo for the Type-59. Intentionally made it kinda spotty with bad coverage to simulate the "fuck it" paintjob of the average conscript forced to spray camouflage schemes, probably without PPE.

Compared to the colors on the Temu BMP, I kept H303, but swapped out H313 Sandy Brown for XF-59 Desert Yellow, and H309 FS34079 Green for XF-27 Black Green. I think this is way closer to the real life vehicles, and the greens are also more distinguishable. For the gun cover I settled for XF-49 Khaki, but I'll probably try and darken it with oils.

Yes, of course they are overpriced. But for real, who in their right mind buys retail? I get those at the fleamarket or secondhand at the boomer club for a couple bucks. And for 1970s kits (compared to Revell&Co.) they fall together almost perfectly. It's always a nice model in the end.

Markings painted. I kinda like how it looks now, in a nice condition as it were in was overhauled, but alas, it's soaked in chipping fluid, so I'm gonna get a good look at it, before bashing it into a scrapyard-dodger that the CCP probably puts the Turks and Muslims in to soak up Mavericks, Hellfires, CBU-105's in a hot war, instead of the Han-crewed ZTZ-99's and 100's.

On the other side the 6 almost wants to fall off the turret, but it's fine, it would probably be as sloppy IRL.

Also sprayed the Temu Malyutka on the Temu BMP. Based in with white so it came out pretty bright, but maybe not super saturated. Should red be based with more like yellow or orange underneath?

Painted markings like that just kicks ass on decals. Especially the little bit overspray you have outside the stencil makes it so much more real every time

It's really more about method and taking time, you should try it sometime

OP here, was supposed to end back on the third, but wait until the thread dies or image limit is reached. Unless you folks want it to be longer. Admittedly things are a bit late... I was sick the first week and a half of this month, so I forgot (my fault, I should stop licking doorknobs kek). I will make a collage of submissions and that will be OP pic the thread after next.

I am toying with the idea of polling interest for another fairly loose group build for 2027, but it is up to you guys as to whether to make it a tradition or not. Let me know if you would be interested.

Since one anon suggested Japan and the folks here took it from there. My suggestion would be to do Germany (both made in and in service) as a theme and make the next GB run from January's thread to October's thread, so a collage can be posted for December's thread. No clue if people would want another country themed GB, or maybe do something different, if anything at all.

Yeah, from now on I'll try to use as many stencils as possible for big projects. Or if unavailable, I'll try experimenting whether I can do some faux-overspray over decals with the airbrush.

You are right about modern jets, especially European and Asian schemes (though I have seen a few special liveries on aggressors and trainers where I live in the US). Rather than Japan or Ukraine, I would probably opt for Brazil, Bolivia, or Iran (especially the Blue Angels at home F-5). I am still toying with the idea of WWI and interwar, though. Maybe a Ki-9 will be next (maybe a Manchurian one), I kind of enjoy rigging with elastic thread.

The Gault Su-57 is done. Pretty pissed about the shitty Zvezda decals for the dashed lines being really poor and silvering quite a bit but other than that very happy with the result. The tiger stripe type camo is a pain in the ass to make for anyone interested, and I would maybe recommend buying a general masking for that sort of thing rather than DIY'ing it but it's doable. I need to build something that isn't a plane now

Well this is certainly one of the looks of all time. Went from parade-ready in the 80's to junkyard dog of the 2020's.

The base layer green will be chipped and worn using paint and other conventional methods.

On some parts the black-green was instantly stripped almost completely. As for the roundel and insignia, it sorta half-worked. I could barely scrape down the turret numbers to show the old paintjob underneath, but the commie star had to be sprayed on so thick to have proper color, that it just refused to chip down to the old one.
>>
Pic was kinda the look I was aiming for, but I obviously went over it.

Oh well, it's still within the realm of possibility, that some third-echelon forgotten brigade deep in Central-Asia, filled up with Muslims, Turks, and other untermensch, are riding tanks that had their last factory-level overhaul in the late 80's, and are close to having the wheels fall off.
>>
Higher res. Some parts look like they've been getting stepped on every day for years and years.

Also arid camouflage tells me this is indeed somewhere in bumfuck nowhere.

Type 59/69 wear badly in service with any other country, so it's not unreasonable. The PLA, wishing to project the proper image, may simply mostly show tanks recently "freshened up". Looking beat to absolute shit is the Type 59/69's natural habitat.

OP here, if images get exhausted, I will create a new thread, I am going to be asleep for a bit, so there may be a time, where you cannot upload images. Forgive me for this.

Last image is when the group build officially ends, but I will be making the collage in the meantime, so late entries will make it to that image.

Damn scratches only in areas normally used by the crew, how restrained for an armor modeler... Helps when you look at some actualy references like the ones you posted for where it actually gets worn

>>11878225
If you're phoneposting the rotation is stored in the EXIF data which gets wiped on upload so you can't retain the rotation
>>
>>11878363
>scratches only in areas normally used by the crew
Which, when you account tanks go through routine maintenance at the beginning of every single training day, and then at end of it, during which crews walk and crawl all along the tank, dragging tools and equipment all across it, means "areas normally used by the crew" covers the entire fucking surface of the tank. Not to mention paint getting scratched up by blasting through vegetation, or just infantry riding on the grab handles on exercise, their rifles and kit scratching on the surface while they hang on.

Also you can take a look at the average peacetime M1 Abrams in the 2020's, they look absolutely fucked visually, while being fine mechanically.

>>11878215
The remnants of a white rim on the road wheels tells me these tank were once parade vehicles, and have been rocking the same paintjob ever since, but don't ask me when and where they'd parade a rear-echelon shitheap like the Type-59D.
