There wasn't really competition for Micro Machines prior to this, they were one of a kind; it was a whole alternative to the common Hot Wheels/Matchbox ecosystem. It wouldn't take much for an overseas company to come up with a superior version of nu-Micro Machines. Hell, if they fixed the trains and made some cool playsets they could match peak Micro Machines.

Hasbro licensed Micro Machines to Wicked Cool Toys, who got bought out by Jazwares(hence why the Pokemon and Star Wars MGS toys have their logo on them). Honestly, I didn't hate them. While I agree that the Super Van City needed more stickers, I don't think it was that much worse than the original. They also brought back licensed cars in the later waves.

The trains at least from what I remember had a monorail design that was easy for them to tip over; plus I don't remember any proper railroad crossing pieces. At least I didn't have any.

I think the problem with Micro Machines is that the toy companies are afraid children will eat them now and these companies don't want to gamble on lawsuits from get-rich-quick parents.
