Their transforming Macross stuff was infamously a mess wasn’t it?And it has less to do with the company and more that the Macross stuff is all largely designed around being structurally sound, with a proper idea of how they would work in 3D. The one thing most toys of the VF-1 can’t replicate is how the legs are transferred for transformation.But TF jets are all basically working off a made up design for the cartoon based off a toy with kibble hanging off it. You would need to fundamentally rework the whole design.

>>11884846Kawamori only got onto the project midway, and tbf he did sort of ruin it. He tried to go for more accuracy in the jet mode, He also pushed for a weird color scheme that was meant to be more realistic but also looked ugly in robot mode with the preestablished Starscream colors. He also gave him the hip flanks that he uses a lot in his Macross designs, wanting to lean into how the 2000's anime made Starscream a sword user..but they didn't give this design swords. Making it an unhappy balance of a lot of conflicting ideas. It threw a monkey wrench in the MP line until Grimlock and Rodimus sort of course corrected, trying to use the same size as Starscream but with more character accuracy. Then MP-10 really refined it until they shifted more to toon accuracy later.
