Trying my hand at an old OC mecha from my early Gundam Wing fanboy years. Most of the design so far is made from modified reverse-engineered PS2 Tallgeese and Victory Gundam game models. After doing organic figure designs all these years I’m now finding out that geometric designs are kinda fun and (sometimes) quicker. Also, this thing is inadvertently gonna be kinda big compared to the GW 1/100th kits out there, as I didn’t plan out a proper scaling before making the legs. Oh well, it’s from a horrible edgy fanfic written when I was 15, no sense worrying about ‘accuracy.’

Here are those 'metallic' alloy 'bookmark' swords, that were $10 for about 30, that I posted about in the last thread. I received this lot of Marvel Legends Caps yesterday and figured they would do. These would probably look great on the Mystic Legions knights or that metallic D&D NECA knight and would probably work with most 1/12 figures. When I have more time, I plan to gundam marker some of these to take the 'sterling silver' aesthetic off 'em.

I think the blue on them won't work and I might make them all gray or black. The one sticking up is a first attempt at the hilt, but I will try some masking tape, that's possibly not as long lasting as fabric strips might be but you are likely correct that it should easily look better. I think duct tape will also solve my 'longevity' and durability concerns?
Update to my OC mobile suit. Torso and neck are complete. Next up are the lower arms, rifle, heat-hawk, shield and terrestrial vernier.

Another retard moment was I painted the vest before I put it on the figure meaning it cracked like shit when I slipped it on, so now I have to repaint it and add like three more top coats (my fault).Im doing a Cobra gardener (punished for being outspoken against Cobras frequent environmental attacks by having an arm infected with a techno organic virus to remove one of his green thumbs) which is why its painted yellow like a gardening glove

Had a bit of free-time so I was able to power through the changes in one sitting. I toned down the legs' girth quite a bit. The knee joints are still robust to maintain at least some emphasis that this is an early prototype, so some things will not be as efficiently designed or sleek as the canonical stuff from Wing. Same thing for the skirt being not as protective as the Gundams' and more of a minor addition to the overall design.

If I am remembering correctly, it held that center part and you turned it to screw up and then reverse to screw the other hand. I think I remember it was a pain to get it flush on both ends, or I guess, flush enough to sate my OCD.
First layer of Gundam Marker down, gonna go over it again to try and make it more smooth. Enjoy the silver while you can because top coat will dull the shit out of it

Can any of this stuff, except for one pair of hands and those energy effects, be useful for customs? It wasn't till I started taking it apart out of the tray, that I realized the hands and round energy effects could also be harvested. I have a few other anime weeb things I can hopefully get rid of in a fodder lot.
I will probably play with the head and face plates for photography but don't want to keep any of it. It's not my taste.

Alright folks we have a new and affordable tons-of-colors customizing Acrylic Airbrush paint made by Hobby Lobby! I've tested it on various plastics and here's my report:It's just called Acrylic Airbrush paint and it's a Hobby Lobby brand. Only $2 a bottle but BUY THE SETS because they're only $8 and you get TEN (10) BOTTLES! A full ounce too unlike Testors in the jars. There's special colors not in the sets and all the clear matte/satin/gloss too. Ao far all the colors I've used are a matte-satin from the bottle. You can use them straight from the bottle but they're thick and should be thinned slightly to be brushed on in multiple thin coats. They act the same as Formula P3/Vallejo/Warhammer type paints. I haven't run them through an airbrush yet because they're perfect for brushing on! Either add distilled water straight to the bottle or mix it on some Dollar Tree 6 well mixing trays. This paint sticks well to CLEAN pvc (marvel legends legs/arms/head) and lightly sanded ABS hard plastic like Transformers or ML chests/waists. It won't stick well to bare shiny plastic but neither does any hobby paint. It will stick to primered surfaces and bonds amazingly with it! I use MTN clear plastic spray primer but whatever you use will do.The paint covers in 3 thinned light coats same as Testors/Warhammer and without brush strokes as long as you thin it down. Takes an hour to cure but you can speed up touch-time with a hair dryer.

After a whole bunch of real-life bullshit got in the way I'm back to work on printable bodies. I've learned a lot, and this might be my best work yet. I'm hoping I can get this body to a certain stage to serve as a "blank" that can be rescaled, reshaped and then have details sculpted for basically any body type. It's currently scaled to be about 11cm tall with a head (1:12 scale), so this particular version will work nicely for smaller Figmas.

Kwik Wood epoxy dries/hardens in about 2hrs after the 15min working time, but is still a tad crumbly until after 24hrs when it is fully devoid of residual moisture and fully cured (air humidity and temp can affect this too). In the first <24hrs the stuff isn’t ready for sanding, carving, or dremeling, but after fully cured the stuff is like fine-grain wood for carving/dremeling intricate details or sanding smooth.

I printed two bodies, one which I've assembled now just to check for any glaring issues, and one which I'll assemble tomorrow afternoon once 24 hours has passed and the resin has had a chance to 100% cure.Observations:>Joints need tolerances reworking for resin, I used these designs in FDM and they worked great but they're actually way too loose in resin. That said they don't feel fragile at all.>Double-pelvis-armature seems to work well, also I managed to nail the cut of the hip overlay, seems to get good range (from what I could tell)>The butterfly joint ball-mounts work pretty well, again tolerancing notwithstanding. That said in person this definitely reads as a (young) male for a female version I'd need to narrow the shoulders a bit, which is easy but worth noting.>I don't know if I undercured the parts, they seem almost too pliable; TH-BJD is designed for this sort of job and I haven't had this problem before. If necessary I can blast it with a bit more UV curing but hopefully it firms up overnight, these engineering resins need rest time to gain their full strength.On the plus side the actual engineering design I'm very proud of. It's also 100% resin; there's not a single plastic part (moulded or FDM) or even metal pins holding it together.

Any kind, even Walmart's Apple Barrel and Dollar Tree paint.MTN (Montana) Plastic Primer is CLEAR AND SEMIGLOSS so you won't have to worry about overapray. If you need white or grey primer for a basecoat just paint white or grey over it. All the clear Acrylic Varnishes from MTN are also incredible and act like Mr Hobby sealers, only cheaper and you get 4x as much in the can.

I used the original legs, monster feet, movie scorponok 'waist" and made a backpack out of the G1 underarms. Not much I can do with the arms they just hide under the tail. Tried folding them on the back but they're just too bulky.
I'm making the G1 monster head swappable and figuring out the details/toyhax labels later. But man it feels good to have a super articulated Squeezeplay!!

Redesigned the hip section to use a standard Figma style hip frame, much happier with this now. Still need to tweak some tolerances and clearances and give it a neck but the basic engineering is otherwise sorted. Also very pleased by the hip range; means I don't have to rely on flexible resin.

Putting my OC non-Gundam mecha on hold for a moment to get a different project done. This is more like a multi-figure project since it will be a 'nude' body with optional kaiju extremities and a schoolgirl sailor uniform body (sculpted uniform), the latter of which can be repurposed for generic schoolgirl uniform bodies and the former for a shorter alternate version of the petite blank body I have for purchasing off cults. This isn't the final design, likely, but I did try to keep it closer to a 1/12 scale of what is allegedly Kuroe's human-form height.

However, cold expands and heat CONTRACTS so you can accidentally shrink ABS hard plastics (ml torso/transformers) and warp soft pvc plastic if you aren't careful. The plastic that dyes the best is the hard nylon-ish plastic that Transformers ball joints/hips/shoulders are made of. Same stuff pinless ML knees/elbows are made of. Soaks up color like a beast and fast, won't warp or shrink either from what I've found.A lot of vintage plastics dye well (GI Joe/Star wars) but newer PVC plastics and PVC painted parts don't. The softer the plastic the harder it is to dye, at least with current day figures. I've relegated my dying to weapons, small parts, sections of TFs that are made of that tough plastic, kinda like polypropylene.Instead of dying I suggest painting because you get loads more color and technique to it. All it takes is that MTN Plastic primer and multiple thin coats of paint, your figure will look amazing. Rubbing isn't an issue when you use Sunin7 factory-ish paints but be prepared to thin them and wash them off your brush with acetone or thinner.

Updated my Dorudon to be (hopefully) FDM compatible, had to fill in a LOT of empty spaces from the original version that was for Sculpteo’s SLS printers, plus redo some parts like the neck and limbs to look better. Gonna try printing this over the week now that I have my own FDM printer up and running. If all goes well I’ll replace the Cults3D files that were originally for SLS printing. Along with new pics of the completed model.

Baraka WIP; total amalgam for an actual 1/12 scale MK line starting with Baraka as he seemed fun. Almost all was thankfully fodder; head and shoulders are McFarlane (need new biceps due to breakage), random GI Joe neck, Violent Ken torso, Fei Long waist/upper legs and some Marvel Legends lower legs. Not sold on the GI; I’ve repainted one but this is a mockup. Any torso overlay ideas beyond Ryu?

Working on mad scientist lab dios, including building autopsy gurney. Have been collecting plenty of beakers, flasks, test tubes. But most are plain, clear plastic.Wanting suggestions on how to imply there are chemicals and volatile substances in particular in these containers. Have some smoke effects so more want help with the liquid/color? Was thinking cheap tempra poster paint from Dollar General but mixed with what? Elmer's glue - with paint mixed in, allowed to dry, kinda works with dark colors (cherry red, black for soda) in bigger (wider) container - to suggest say fountain soda, etc. but looks like shit in some lights and photos. >>11915780I once made really decent smoke effect for a Ghos figurine by using this stuff meant to act as a medium for pigment, to kinda DIY mix or thicken your own acrylic paint, I think it was just like 'acrylic paint medium' or whatever. dried clear, i could just bloop on one bloop at a time, let it hang and dry into a droplet, then add another.. i mixed in some watercolor paint for a smoky effect.. I don't still have that figurine, but I think it came out nicelyalso whoa, Grandpa :D I should check those figures out.
More experimenting with the >>11911148 shit here. It seems not very good for soft plastic as you can see. It cracks after applying the lacquer. The tip of the horn was a liquid metal pen though meaning only the Fusion paint cracks. Unpainted included for reference
