Looks like TRU is starting to revive in the US markets with stand alone store again. Will Zoomer parents return to retro times and get their kids toys instead of AI tracking ipads? Can the collectible market bubble last? The rest of the world has kept their TRU going, what can US TRU learn from them? Post some TRU photos.

i dont want Toys R Us back anymore. That existed when companies would try anything and dump as much product as possible. I dont think USA is even toy play culture for kids anymore

Not with that attitude

It's basically an alt account for Go Calendars
>>
>>11901251
Spirit Toys R' Us could work if they actually offered shit you can't just get somewhere else cheaper like imported Jap toys and other adult oriented sets (not necessarily 18+ just more complex). But it'll 100% be marked up Chinese garbage and video games just like their inventories before they collapsed.
>>
>>11901251
I rarely bought toys from ToysRUs when they were around in my young adult life. Walmart and Target usually had better deals on prices and variety. Most TRUs around me would restock 4 times a year, if that. I am indifferent for their revvial unless they have a major overhaul by addressing competitive pricing and inventory. Otherwise I will keep going to Target and Walmart like I always do.
>>
Americans hate toys how could this even work?
>>
>>11901340
They tried this actually and it didn't pan out for them. Toyzam! was a seasonal pop-up toy store concept by Spencer's/Spirit Holdings meant to replace KB Toys in the marketplace space in malls. The idea was abandoned after about six years. They then tried to pivot into opening seasonal Spencer's Christmas stores that sold the majority of their Christmas apparel items like their light up sweaters, then pivoted on that concept and now run seasonal Spirit of Christmas stores that operate off of the Spirit model instead of the Spencer's model with large ISE displays and a focus on decor.

Toys R Us' hayday was back in the '80s and early 90's when their competition was KayBee toys and places like that. One-stop department stores kind of killed specialty stores. TRU of the 2000s did not feel at all like the TRU of the 80s and 90's.

Yeah true. Most my purchases are online nowadays, even though I regularly visit Target. There are two Targets that regularly restock, but other Targets nearby that restock near Christmas only. Same for Walmart- only one that regularly restocks while the rest maybe twice a year.
>>11901402
It could be nostalgia talking, but man I miss KayBee toys most of all. The one my parents took me to were always full of stock to the point the store was super cluttered. It felt like I was discovering new stuff on every aisle. I have a lot more fond memories of KayBee than I do of TRU. The only thing that got my itch of KayBee toys was going to a couple toy store in Japan. Man, I wish we had better toy stores in the states.
>>
>>11901419
I think I liked TRU more, but it was always exciting going to either store. Since KayBee was smaller and had less space, it felt like they put stuff on sale/clearance more often.
>>
>>11901402
>Toys R Us' hayday was back in the '80s and early 90's when their competition was KayBee toys and places like that. One-stop department stores kind of killed specialty stores
Terrible logic and a massive ignorance of the market.

There was a TON of competition back then, where department stores like Broadway, Macys, Mervyns, JC Penny, Sears, and many more were carrying toylines on any given day. Nevermind the regional and indie stores.
Companies back then were OKAY with their own markets and it really wasn't until the mid-late 90s when companies started eating up other companies to grow their marketshare and/or push other retailers out of the market.

A whole messload of shit was deregualted in the 90s that allowed big companies to basically kill off all the indie mom and pop shops, which is why even giants like TRUs were eventually killed off too.

I think it's pretty sad that there's three generations that express their love for conglomerate stores and have no idea what shopping at local stores was like. physical shopping will also be unknown for later generations... if not just purchasing shit in general.
>>
>>11901445
>Terrible logic and a massive ignorance of the market.
Get bent, retard. Don't talk down to me. My point was that most of those retailers got bled dry by places like Walmart, and their shitty practices of undercutting everyone until they were one of the only ones left.
>>
File: toysrus shelves.jpg (152 KB, 992x733)
152 KB JPG
>>11901456
well it sure wasn't TRU's heyday and they weren't exactly bled dry, since most of the competition were trying to be more specialty shop, due to profits/stock market goals.
So stores that you probably associate with clothing only became that way because why dedicate 1/10th of your store to children toys when it can be used to carry even more clothing that they can buy at even better bulk rates?
Those toy sections were already thought of as a place for a busy mom to park her kids while she shopped for her things and make an extra buck or three. profitable, but those profits are minuscule to the BULK RATES and expanded shopping experience!

So naturally, TRU, KB, and other toy stores take up their market, and they also fall into the trend of expansion and getting bulk rates.
This is why carrying older stock became less important for TRU, and why toy companies sstopped making year round waves.
Stuff like pic related was only possible due to those year round waves, and by focusing on quarterly/bi-monthly waves, they were actually selling MORE toys. It goes without saying, new toys on a regular basis attracts more customers. Smaller stores couldn't order as much stock or change their business model, thus fell off.

Anyway, TRU's real heyday was the late 90s and early 00s, which is when they were expanding with over a thousand stores. This is also when regional and indie stores disappeared.
>>
>>11901251
A lot of people are spreading around the headline these are opening because of a n increased interest in adults buying toys, is there a source for thar? Why are more people buying toys?

I remember as a preteen getting into forums and toy collecting, everyone would always shit on TRU for having slightly higher prices(usually a dollar or some change more) and people would talk up Wal-mart as "Wally World", a magical place where a $10 toy was sold for $7.55. Wal-mart took a while to come up here and when it did it sucked and never got better. Target too. TRU and KBs and even K-mart had a more rotating stock even if they had their stagnant months. I always figured that the end stage of Wal-mart winning is for them to stop competing as hard, and that's exactly what happened. Retail toys being stuck in big box stores only or the occasional marked up mall store like Gamestop where toys are secondary has been awful for distribution.

That makes a lot of sense why KayBee was on clearance more. That is probably a big factor why I liked them and saw better deals and smaller toys there. I personally gravitated towards the smaller toys like Z-Bots and Mighty Max.
>>11901537
I assume its because of more people with more disposable income, an increase in hobbies in general (especially collectible ones), and probably a lack of toy stores in general (so competition shouldn't be as tough). For example, Pokemon and TCGs in general are way more popular today. Same for 40k, D&D, and other tabletop/board games. Toy collecting I noticed is becoming more trending, at least in the anime/manga sphere. I see people on /a/ related forums complaining about certain figures trending on tiktok, thus increasing the prices 3x to 4x overnight. It's a weird world we live in now lol
>>
>>11901608
Especially since boomers are the only ones caring about action figure faggotry, honestly Americans don't even deserve toy stores given how retarded they are and need everything to be an official Collab with prestige brands for that rizzle dizzle over on tiktok

Commodore flip phone is on the way. people often claim that modern kids hate toys if favour of ipads or whatever often neglect to claim that toys are three times as expensive as they were 20 years ago
before a kid could go to a store and buy something they liked for 5 - 10 dollars
now that same toy would cost over $20, likely with less things than that $10 toy in the past had

> I think it's pretty sad that there's three generations that express their love for conglomerate stores and have no idea what shopping at local stores was like. physical shopping will also be unknown for later generations... if not just purchasing shit in general.
In-person shopping persists for a lot of categories, clothing is the obvious big one bc attempts to take clothing retail entirely online have been disastrously expensive. Bookstores are a good example: everyone predicted their erasure in the early 2010s and now people seem to have cooled on reading books via tablets/kindles. Barnes & Noble used to be shit and deserved to die; they reopened near me a few years ago, and it’s actually a cool place to go now. Somebody figured out how to do it right. It’s just a matter of time for toys.
>>11901464
>picrel
Damn, I remember when tru was like that in the 90s: tall, long aisles packed with every toy from every toy line you could think of. It was so cool walking down one of those and just being surrounded by every Star Wars toy you could get, for example.

>my kids don't give a shit, they just play with what they have and want to go outside to the playground or sprint around the house

>they just get bored and start throwing shit at eachother

Idk, maybe it's a blessing. I just want to have an easier time picking stuff out for them for Christmas

Back in late 90s early 2000s these DBZ figs were $9-11. You can go to Walmarts today and buy better sculpted and more articulated DB figures in the same scale for $10-12 in 2026 monies. Kid's toys are still pretty cheap, this just make less of them. Hasbro especially. Mattel just put out core dc and MOTU figures for $10 a figure. it's not that toys are expensive now, it's that parent today would rather give their kids a smartphone to distract them and not have to raise them properly. Hoping on Gen Z parent start to pull away from electronics when they start having kids. Mellinials would rather get toys for themselves rather than their kids. So here we are.

I don't think I ever saw one TRU size, but they definitely felt like they had about the same major selection in a much more compact way. After the 2000's rework of the store that made the R Zone, it always felt like the middle of TRU was a lot of filler.
My favorite KB division was the briefly seen Toy Liquidators. The 90's was such a cool time for toys that even failed or discounted lines had a ton of cool stuff. Getting Kenner Aliens for like 2 or 3 for $5 was a great deal.

This, the current iteration of TRU which opens stores like the one in the american Dream Mall is a really chintzy, like some deep discount closeout store with all the livery from TRU
One weird thing is that the Transformers section was all Blokees, no Hasbro Transformers. Not a bad thing but it almost gives it the feeling of a dropship store and not an American retailer.
All the Marvel Legends were 5 year old Eternals and a lot of Legion figures.
A bunch of deep discount surplus items
That still have a pile of the Yellow Ranger Vs Scorpina two pack for $15 and they still aren't moving. It's not even a bad buy for the money but it's pointless because the other rangers are long out of stock and you could never find them in this particular store anyway.
>>
it's surprising Americans talk about the quality of product when time and time again it's been product how greedy they are when it comes to gobbling down the latest slop for a two for one deal with a heavy discount but now you bitch when your entire country correctly deserves this? guess thats what happens when China gets all the manufacturing infrastructure with no human rights

yeah, there were a ton of stores back in the day and dumb kids today talking about how cool it was that near-monopolies made the toy industry better because they don't know anything about whta happened in the past.

So 10 years from now, the kids of today wil lbe praising amazon and COVID, talking about how it saved their weak human femurs supporting their 250lb body from going outside and everything was delivered directly to their doorsteps. Not walking more than 50 steps a day is worth the $50 price tags on 1:12 toys.

Thank you. Finally somebody besides me is seeing it.

I read three variations of the article. They can't decide if it's 120 new stores or 80 on top of 40 they already have (none of which are anywhere near me). None of them have a list of locations either.

This, despite being barely three months out from Christmas and only two months from the "official" start of the shopping season. It takes significant time to set up furniture, signage (including the big one that says "Toys R Us" hanging over the front door), receive and stock inventory, hire people, etc. And _this_ is the first we're hearing of it? No media ads, no job postings, no nothing besides yet another announcement stunt like they do every other year that amounts to nothing.

As desperately as I want this small bit of the way life used to be to come back, they're already dead.

welcome to the news since the 1970s... 1960s?
IT's no different than when a console or new iphone is announced. Everything gets a press release since then and if the media thinks it's big enough, they'll report on it.

And it is a pretty big deal for the company, since it's now reaching a nation wide level, instead of being stuck regionally.

And just like a console or iphone being announced and taking about a year for it to come out, you can't expect for the TRU to immediately open in your area. This news is to draw attention to the brand, get word of mouth out, create excitement, and who knows what else that comes from press releases. Once it gets closer to open a store, they'll make another annoucnement for your local news.
bE READY!
GET HYPED!
yadayaadayada!

Personally, I'm not all that giddy, because the toy industry in in a boring slump right now, but maybe TRU leaving the market is why there aren't that many toys i look forward to now. that and the shitty economy.
So TRU being back might expand the market.
>>
>>11902925
>don't you know it's a big deal to get word of mouth and Hype for a few years before doing anything? I'll have you know it takes time for things to get going once it starts and when it does? it'll save the industry from this pesky down slump trumpy himself is responsible for

You missed my point. They said they're aiming to be open in time for the Christmas shopping season. But there's no way in hell they're going to make it in time. There's too much to do and not enough time to do it at the pace they're going.

I just read a fourth article that said 120 new bringing the total to 160. That same article listed 21 "confirmed" locations in my state, "expanding their already significant presence in the state." That "significant presence?" A pop up in a Philadelphia Macy's. Wow such presence, many significant.

It's just empty hype until these stores open, _stay_ open for a full calendar year, and your average collector can actually walk into one and buy real toys that aren't claw machine fodder.

the issue isn't that toys cost more due to inflation, it's that wages are, if anything, down. And there's no jobs anyway. Which is great, in a way.. but that should be making prices plummet, since everything's automated and there's no need to hire more people

And you're missing the point of this announcement.
IF they only announced seasonal shops, who would give a shit? by announcing 100+ new stores, the media is going to hype it up, and it's working exactly like they want it to.
You looked it. I looked it up. Everyone is going to look up if a store is opening near them because of the media reporting this press release. And the stores that are getting ready to open up for this Christmas are now getting a lot of attention.

>>11902927
i can tell you'rea third worlder because you don't understand how vast the US is and how everything needs to get announced a long way ahead of time, due to how long it takes for every retailer to get their products.
And companies have the money to market their shit a year ahead of time and then again when it's up for preordering and AGAIN for its release.
This is why multibillion dollar toy companies are multibillion dollar toy companies, because they have the money to be contantly in a consumer's head. It's not slow nor lazy at all, given how much work it actually involves.
And this is how you can tell McFarlane is a small time company, since they tend to announce shit a couple of months before release, just like Blokees

Parents generally have less space too since almost half of Millenials(current parents) can't afford homes. That's another reason why games and digital streaming get more popular. Families aren't making roots the way they used to.
The other thing is, even if $20 isn't that bad, Millenials will still reflect on prices they had growing up. A Transformer is now almost $30 for a deluxe. That's a significant amount of money compared to the $10 it cost in the 90's up until around 2010. 15 years of kids, now adults and parents, saw Transformers for $10, now they're smaller and $30.
Meanwhile a game like Roblox is, on the surface at least, free(obviously the money is on the backhalf of things sold in game). Games and consoles are rising in price but there's a ton of cheap options, same with tablets, phones, etc. They also take up less space and tend to be used more.

Please provide all the details you have on these deregulations, this is exactly the type of information I want. oh, did you learn about the deregulations from my rants about ATT/Disney/Clinton/California energy crisis?

And the deregulation for retail really wasn't anything official ,it was mostly just the government not giving a shit about things like Diamond Comics eating up Capital City, where something similar also happened with dvd/bd/cassete/record distributors helping out in the collapse of sam goody/suncoast/etc.
Shit like that should have been caught by the federal government except for shady reasons and it all started happening in the 90s.

And i don't know the specifics about distributors, because I'm too young to know what happened there and it's a lot of behind the scenes shit. I just know various old retailer guys who have ranted about it and industry stuff rarely makes the news.

Deregulation is a conservative - government should not interfere in the economy concept - that reached it's height with Ronald Reagan. All Clinton did was add to that. And that was largely reflexive.
I don't disagree that it was harmful or that it, off shoring, cheap junk and e-commerce are all long-term harmful across numerous aspects, but don't fixate on a few great harms or a small handful as responsible.
Walmart is no different than Amazon and most idiots here care only that a pre-order isn't cancelled, and that they are getting free shipping on the plastic crack.

So you're saying that Clinton and democrats in California were conservative because they started deregulating communications, media, and energy sources in the 90s?

OR is this just some stupid zoomer identity politics of the 2020s, not understanding how greedy and corruprt all politicians are since before you were born?

Reagan might have started some shady practices that benefited big businesses, but people like Clinton and Barbara Boxer made it much more worse. Thanks to Clinton, science fiction from the 70s and 80s is coming true. Even censorship, thanks to "television education", got worse. All about protecting kids and sending the "right" message.

People keep insisting that the 90's were the last good decade for america, but the seeds of a whoooole lotta dystopian shit were sown during those years.
>>
>>11904681
democrats in california didn't do jack shit
many of them opposed what good old bill was trying to do in ending 'welfare as we know it' IF by democrats in california you are deluding yourself into thinking meant nancy
people like diane finestein (sp?) were more genuinely conservative that orange jesus and have the retards he's frightened into allowing him to grift billions
someone like ragen (sp?), ford, or dole weren't thieves out to grift either the public or the government for every dime possible

These two things aren't mutually exclusive. Seeds for bad times are often famously sown during good times. Part of the reason this shit even happened was because people were making money hand-over-fist, and the dot-com bubble burst was a long way out. The average businessman didn't care what the consequences were, and the average American had no fucking clue any of this was even going on.

Also, you have to understand how prevalent the notion was that America could only ever get better. There was just zero acknowledgment that the US government would or could EVER pass legislation that would make things worse for the average American. Part of what made the 90s so great is that everyone was still high on the fumes of growth from previous decades. Technology was growing by leaps and bounds, and nobody could even begin to imagine it being used to make things worse instead of better. That was only in the movies.

>>11905888
honestly americans deserve this for not caring and thinking they dont need no edumucation to figure things out
>>
>>11905757
ok, so you're some stupid zoomer who thinks current democrats are somehow better when most of their decisions are reactionary to trump, while still fucking up their cities and states with more and more censorship, authoritarianism, and letting big businesses get even bigger, while fucking over small businesses.
Clearest case for this is Paramount and WB merger, when they had previously been fine with Disney and Fox merger.

>These two things aren't mutually exclusive. Seeds for bad times are often famously sown during good times.
big old truth.
And a ton of people saw how awful that should could be at the time, hence being against it. A lot of people saw it decades beforehand in fucking science fiction books too

> the average American has no fucking clue any of this was even going on
fixed that for you.

God, that is the single most alien frame of mind I have ever heard in my life, and I was born in that decade. Its no different from people looking back on the '50's and wondering how the populace could be so naive.
