Rather than wait for the next Customs General to post I figured I'd create a whole separate thread dedicated to 3D printing for /toy/ related endeavours. Accessories, dioramas, props, heads or entire figures, resin of FDM (or even SLS if you use it), anything goes! After much messing about I have FINALLY managed to get this base body test-printed and fully assembled! It's as generic and blank a body as I could design to focus on engineering and tolerances rather than getting hung up on sculpting detail. Len Kagamine is demonstrating it; it's mostly a success! I need to adjust some tolerances, especially the ankle pegs (one partially cracked from overtightness) and the hip sockets (too loose, though still useable) but this is the best thing I've ever designed, at least functionally.
>>11919024All the parts are printed in TH-BJD resin. The body parts were cured in a clear jar filled with water whilst the joints were cured normally (the water-curing makes the resin ever so slightly softer, which is ideal for the body parts with sockets for pegs and balljoints).
>>11919028The only exception (aside from his head) is one knee as I hamhanded it and replaced it with a spare FDM sample and the neck joint,, as the stock neck joint on Len's head was too long to fit in the neck of the figure and I didn't fancy chopping it down, so I used another FDM piece.
>>11919031He has really good range of motion, which is nice; I considered printing the pelvis overlay in flexible resin but it's completely unnecessary, as he gets full range with the regular stuff.By the way, if you want to print joints on an FDM printer I HIGHLY recommend PETG. PLA is honestly a shit plastic and will not survive posing, whilst the FDM joints I've printed have maintained tension after several months.
>>11919033(Apologies for the rather zesty poses, I wanted to see what the full range was like.)He's not perfect, he needs a lot of re-tolerancing and I feel like either his shoulders are too wide or his body is too narrow, but this is still a massive step forward for what I'm capable of.Anyone else been printing anything interesting?
>>11919024Pretty good work there! Is this going up on Cults anytime soon?As for me, I'm still in the CAD stages with this, but now that I have my own printer (Bambu A1) I'm trying to get the hang of FDM after 11yrs of SLS printing (my wallet wouldn't be able to handle big prints via Sculpteo anyways). So I have a revamped version of Dorudon made for FDM and so far I have the head, jaw, and teeth printed (they're like dentures to glue into the mouth) and will be moving towards the rest of the body over the next week or so. I've had some time to look over Dorudon and see how much of the design can be repurposed for a 1/12 Basilosaurus (yes, I'm aware how big that will be) and came up with this initial comparison of the two FDM models.
>>11919095>Pretty good work there! Is this going up on Cults anytime soon?It should be as soon as I get the final problems solved. Notably I need to design better hip sockets, the rest is very easy work (just putting more clearance between pegs and socket walls).Nice work on the cetacean by the way! Intrigued to see how that comes out.
