All things Taiwan. Work, nightlife, attractions, food, visas. Get in here Taiwan knowers.
>>
I'm actually applying for the public school program but I don't know Chinese. I want to find somewhere to chill and get a nice ltr gf but it seems from what I've read very hard. They will fuck the White guys but don't want a serious relationship.
What's Taipei like in general? Lots of wild subcultures and wild nightlife? Is it a cool place to live or boring af like Kuala Lumpur?
>>

>>2865118
Taiwan sucks. Nobody speaks English and Mandarin is hard as fuck to learn. Not sure why someone made its own general here
>>
>>2865122
I've seen lots of anons on here talking like it's the best secret spot if Asia
>>
Does anyone have any resources for learning mandarin?
And, if I speak like a mainlander visiting taiwan are they going to get mad at me?
>>
>>2865123
Best secret spot if you like pointing and trying to speak baby Mandarin to someone laughing their ass off at you. There's no way to communicate with dignity as a tourist

>>
>>2865122

The food in Taiwan sucks (relative to other E Asia destinations, in a vacuum its fine/good) but otherwise it has better English levels than Korea Japan and all non Tier-1 Mainland China. It is (or was) a good secret spot because it was not popular with tourists despite being very nice and accessible but that is less true now than it was 10 years ago.

>>2865126
I speak mandarin with a mainland accent and I deliberately play it up when in Taiwan because YES you will get reaction but no not a negative one just that you are a novelty and the girls like it

If you can't read Chinese, you're pretty fucked in Taiwan. Yes you can still get your necessities, but you won't be enjoying the best of what the country has to offer, and you'll probably be coping with a lot of cans of Taiwan Beer from convenience stores. Translate apps often give you gibberish results for wall menus, and even if they do give English words, you can't order by shouting an English word! The only way a non-Chinese speaking person without a local friend can order is having the cook come away from his station, walk to your side, and see which item you are pointing at on the wall menu (which may not even be at a level that allows items to be pointed at, sometimes I wished I had a fucking laser pointer kek). Very inconvenient and annoying for a people who pride themselves on workplace efficiency. The best dining spots you won't even be able to get a seat, much less a table, as a solo foreigner wandering around. Great Chinese restaurants are always fucking crammed with diners, and the harried staff have no time to explain the menu items to a foreigner, much less do so in English.
>>2865467
Facial asymmetry is deemed very unattractive by East Asians. Look at the mugshot on your driver's license; if your face isn't symmetrical, you're unlikely to have success with dating in Taiwan.

You can be an English teacher and pull girls if you're young and nobody will care. Old, bald, and still working as a dancing monkey will not get you anywhere in developed parts of Asia unless you're settling for the absolute worst washed up women.

You'd be better off considering Cambodia.
>>
>>2865648
Hmm. But I'll take a 35yo, even a single mom. Maybe you'd consider that washed up? I'm ok with that.
I'm a state licensed teacher. I have money. I just want to chill though. Semi retired. But I'm probably gonna give heavy LBH vibes anyway ig.
I used to work in Cambodia. All over SEA. I kinda like the ultra clean, ultra modern, ultra safe East Asia though.

You don't need to know Chinese in Taiwan to have fun for a few weeks. It's only needed to date high quality local women. If that's not your aim, then you won't be disappointed. This holds true everywhere. High quality women expect being able to communicate with their partner...
>>
>>2865680

Ah so you're the life of a party, if you're not open to some basic social drinking once in a while to break into the community good fucking luck in any Asia country anon.

I'm not saying you have to go the club each night but if you're not open to at least meeting people in an open social setting like that, you've basically limited yourself off from a huge market.

My guy... I meant shitty hours because a lot don't open up before 4PM-6pm which can be meh depending on your life style. Who the fuck thinks they are going to have a realistic conversation at 4AM
>What one place?
Bars are common places for locals to meet foreigners and find someone they can use to practice english with often setting up dates and other stuff after.

Again your social views are that of someone who is underage and can't drink. Bars and Pubs are viewed insanely differently in Asia than whatever club you went to once and assume all bars are this way. People going out after work for 3-4 beers to socialize and talk is completely normal, you're acting as if I am saying go party hard till the sun comes up.

A bar or pub is probably the lowest barrier of entry with most rinse and repeat options available. A church is good but everyone is going to be taken so hopefully someone has a fat aunt to marry

>>
>>2865717
>Did you miss the part I said I've lived all over SEA?
Because you may have lived there but you're so socially inept it's actually baffling to me that you would turn your nose up to the obvious answer.
>Now tell me quality late 30s wife material can be found in bars and clubs. Hmm? Hmm anon?
Dude you're 42 and bald, your best bet is a bar where some 30 something office worker who hasn't had time for a BF is fighting against their biological clock for a financially secure guy to stumble into their life so they can focus on a mother role. I didn't say clubs, I said you are addressing bars as clubs and conflating the two.
>I gave you credit for your church idea now sit down
Anon you're 42 not 22 and not 32, 42. A church is a good social structure and good to go to, assuming you don't go to the cult ones, but everyone and their sister is going to be 20's and getting married. This isn't Philippines, Korea, or Thailand where a 40 year old that's financially secure is worth a decade or two age gap; it's taiwan where plenty of options exist you really don't have much going for you. No you being White, somewhat financially secure(whatever this means) 6'1 doesn't go far in Taiwan when you're 42 and bald lmao.

If you wanted a trad wife you should live a trad lifestyle.

If you can't understand social drinking and then heading home around 9-10PM from the bar after a few conversations, you are literally too socially inept to meet any women.

You should be keeping all options on the table my guy, you closing down any options you possibly can have is a game ender. You're an English teacher that's not really a head turner of a career field nor something anyone respecting the salary coming in on that. Bald 42 year old and can't speak the local language with a career that can be gone in 6 months without a second thought isn't really a head turner.

Lived all over Asia and its easy mode here hey, you'll be fine, but do need to understand, the fashion accessory thing is very real, there's a lot of women who have no real intention of a long term relationship yet having a western bf to show off gives them clout in their circles. What about Taichung or Kaohsiung? Thinking about working remotely out there. Anyone been?
>>
>>2866008
I worked there remotely for 6 weeks. Good facilities, but really boring for a place of its size. The food was more bland and the heat felt worse than in Taipei.
>>
>>2866009
Ok. Cool. I think I'm settling for New Taipei City. Close enough to Taipei with 30% or cheaper rents. You have any experience there?
>>
>>2866008
Both are ok for a week, just to scratch any curiosity itch, and also use as an excuse ride the trains

but imo Taipei and the surrounding area are so much better for that. Taichung and Kaohsiung had really smelly manholes every 20 feet on most streets. Taichung lacks the nice green spaces, and it's hard to access the parks surrounding the city. I took busses and walked about an hour to reach them. Kaosiung has trains and a coast, but I tried hiking and it smelled like dog shit from the monkeys. I couldn't really enjoy these cities because it was always stinky. December Taipei air was a lot fresher imo. The air didn't cross my mind there until I returned and was grateful I didn't have to hold my breath so often

>Wake up at 11am
>Do whatever for 8 hours - go to Tamsui, makeng, Taipei zoo rain line, Keelung. You can cover a lot of ground. I love the south bit of Taipei and how estates merge into the mountains. It's so green there.
>Work from 7pm to 3am
>Sleep until 11am
>>
>>2866009
For a city of that size it definitely feels that way sometimes.
The country is small enough you can visit nearly anywhere in a daytrip so Taipei makes a lot more sense to live in, especially for a foreigner
>>2866011
New Taipei city has much better accommodation for the price. Taiwanese people claim they don't like big windows but every apartment with sunshine and windows costs 30% more so the market doesn't match what they say.
Newer apartments down in Xindian or up north in Beitou seem good value compared to in town.
There's other cheap areas like Songshan but not really any foreigners there
>>
>>2866025
The Taipei parks are worth it so much. I understand why everyone likes daan
My friend lives in Wenshan and it's so green and nice near his house
>>
How fucking cool would it be to be living in Taiwan when China invaded. No way I'd leave on a relief plane. Would be one of the greatest moments of my life. Watching one of the biggest historical events of the century live in front of your eyes.

Because you type like some retard who sat behind a desk if what you say is true.
>An invasion is unlikely but still quite possible
It's PR shit for as long as China doesn't need a huge PR win to quell unrest/uneasy within the country. Half the reason to take Taiwan is for it's infrastructure which Taiwan gladly states it's willing to blow at the first sign of troops on the beaches. Not to mention basically every country will condemn the action. Maybe after the next elections sure, but the most realistic "invasion" is akin to how HK was taken over- I mean made fully autonomous.

To any /fit/izens currently residing in taiwan, what are some good cheap sources of protein? Milk is expensive and the only non-deepfried chicken i've come across are the breast filets at 7/11.

I asked my airbnb host for good places for groceries and he just told me 7/11. I get the impression most of the locals here subsist off of fried shit and boba tea most of the time since most of them look like theyre made of hot dog meat. At least all the walking keeps them skinny though.

Oh shit. I'm moving from China to Taiwan. Sounds just as protein deprived. Here in China it frustrates the shit out of me. There is literally not a single piece of meat they enjoy as a main interest, it's always scraps of meat in something else.
I keep seeing pic rel on tiktok. You haven't seen it at night markets?

If you want protein, get a Costco membership and start cooking your chicken breasts. They also have protein powder there. There are protein drinks and precooked chicken breasts available at 7/11 but they are obviously going to be more expensive.

Where in China are you? Fish and meat mains are everywhere, unless you're at cheap ass back alley restaurants. Though the concept of a plain piece of meat cooked alone with zero seasoning or spices isn't really a thing. It's not common in Asia at all.

I ended up getting a costco membership and was disappointed to see that milk and chicken there weren't particularly cheap. For the last 6 months, I've been living in Japan on a student visa. While I did have a very rewarding experience, I'm choosing not to return for the 2nd semester of my school as I have no desire to try to "fit" in with japanese society and feel strongly with their sentiment that foreigners need to fuck off.

That being said, the idea of returning to the states makes me shutter. I have much more of an affinity for mandarian than I do for japanese and I hear that Taiwan gives off a vibe similar to Korea in that they don't care as much if you're a white dude roaming around, they just mind their business. In Japan, that is NOT the case and it irks the fuck out of me. Should I try doing a language school in Taiwan or something? I wanted to take a gap year anyways for work (worked the last 8 years in accounting) and I wanted to also see if there were opportunities to stay longer but in the case of Japan, it's not the place I want to be. But I've definitely realized that Asia and the walkability/cities/food etc are all things that click for me

Oh boy do I have BAD news for you about fish in Asia then... you're overthinking this hard, keep in mind that was like 1-2 brands and was following only California retard mode safety concerns. Yes the same state that leagalized giving others STD's. Protein powder is fine drink more water, the vitamins you take and water you drink there is probably far worse.

GNC has protein bars, powder, etc. Seriously not hard to get proper protein, a pork bowl at Sukiya is cheap as hell McDonalds almost always has good breakfast deals. Without anon saying his protein goals hard to recommend anything big. Tons of shops have just full chicken or pork platters it's pretty easy to find what you need, you're overthinking it.

Am I the only one that likes Taiwanese food? Everyone seems to shit on it.
Am in heaven in some of these dumpling joints.
Hotpot is solid, there's Jap-owned restaurants and izakayas all over. The economy buffets are stuff yourself stupid tier.
I don't get the hate for it, you can eat out all the time for not much with far healthier options here than anywhere else on Earth.

>>2867412
>I need 28g of protein every 3 hours
least deranged /fit/izen
Guessing you don't have a stove in your airbnb? Chicken breast from carrefour or pxmart is cheap
Without cooking equipment and trying to keep costs down I'd go the convenience store packaged chicken breasts and century eggs.
When I didn't have a kitchen would buy a few of those to put in the microwave with cheese on top (fuck cooking things in a plastic bag like they do in store), then on a sandwich with some lettuce and kewpie mayo, would be hitting over 30g protein for a small meal.
If you're willing to eat out then dumplings are protein rich, I pay 120 for ten pork dumplings which is 90% meat, Korean BBQ you can just sit there and solely eat meat no one will even blink.

At $5 a bowl you should get a little better quality than the $2.50 or $3 meals which I typically went for, and which has a couple bites of mushy greens as the extent of vegetable intake. One vegetarian restaurant in Hualien served excellent food with all kinds of exotic mushrooms and other strange veggies, but charged 200 a plate. Mostly its that brown onions sauce that everything is flavored with. I grew to hate the flavor. That bento box smell in the convenience stores is also disgusting.

That's a stretch

I am the one you're responding to so my opinion is already stated
"The food in Taiwan sucks (relative to other E Asia destinations, in a vacuum its fine/good)"
I dont think this is an unreasonable position though starts hyperbolic. The food in Taiwan is generally more bland and with less protein than neighboring destinations. Its more 'snack' based so to speak with nightmarkets or quick single dish restaurants (eg noodles) than larger meals. Most of their food is an inferior version of a Mainland style and what is truly local is mostly not special. Exception - Taiwan beef noodle soup is the best beef noodle soup in the Sinosphere

It's an environmental/sustainability thing. Call me a woke faggot for it I don't care, the oceans are being raped if not completely depleted especially in this region.
Entire species no longer exist here because Asians have no concept of sustainable fisheries management and will fuck up the planet when left to their own devices. It's some magical unlimited resource to them.

Anon the "need to have protein ever X hours" is a huge meme only meant for those actually doing some lookmaxxing BS which yes hugh jackman does for specific roles. A large meal for breakfast, you can get a 35g protein shake at any 711 for like 75ntd or 2.50, hitting ~100-120g of protein is fucking easy in about 2ish meals. This is if you're actually needing that much which I don't think most people on /fit/ do because every time I've meet a /fit/izen from /trv/ they are DYEL "yeah I gym like a lot(see: 1-2 times) a week". doubt most people here could do 5 sets of 8x115kg leg presses. That's a low bar man like monday after a weekend of drinking

>korean bbq is expensive to eat everyday and dumplings are too oily. might as well hit the kendeji bulk at that point
Protein doesn't give a shit how you get it anon, just that your body gets it. Yes eating the real meat and protein is always preferable to something like a shake or supplement, but hey it's not going to just be run through the body like water, though it may digest slightly faster due to not as much to breakdown, so timing is a bit more key.

Taiwan has a ton of chicken everywhere, supermarkets full of frozen chicken. Fish/seafood is literally everywhere to be had high in protein.

Like hell, KFC which is everywhere is like what 180ntd for a chicken leg and breast meal. that's probably like 40-50g of protein there for 4 bucks, and that's "I am so lazy" mode.

like this dude ^ says

Many cheap places have no windows. It's not because people are afraid of them, but you squeeze more rooms into towers without windows. I was afraid of dying from CO2 asphyxiation in my shoebox hotel room"

Many places smell like sewer shit. In Gaoxiong, I walked into a hotel I had booked for 7 nights (!!!) and it made my stomach somersault immediately. I checked in, walked to my room and sat on the bed think "I can't do this" for a few minutes lmao I contacted booking.com and went to the front desk. I cannot believe those staff sit in that stench ALL DAY.

Then there are the retarded prices for mediocre rooms. I "made a stink" to the hotel staff like $90/night is not worth this fucking shitty "4 star" room (but politely). I met the manager of the hotel, and he took me to another building and I stayed there for 7 nights.

If you can, go in person to scope out places BEFORE booking them. I couldn't because I was working night shifts and would have to book overlapping nights a lot while swapping cities and neighbourhoods.

It was a sources of anxiety, spending hours booking my next hotel room for another week.

That is a large part of why Japan and Vietnam BTFO Taiwan. I never had these gay issues except for smelly moldy bathrooms in a few Japan hotels, but not very often.

If I did my trip all over again, I'd only do Taipei for 7 days, and leave the country.

t. 1.5 months in hotels there.

The shit smells are caused by a problem with the drain traps in the bathrooms. Sounds like you are very inexperienced at booking hotels if you are getting such awful rooms. All of my Taiwan rooms were clean and fresh-smelling inside, though one of the cheap rooms in Hualien had a very stuffy musty hallway area that was abominable to walk through. You had to shove back a rusty metal shutter every time you entered the building, then shove it closed and padlock it behind you. Very inconvenient. Asian cultures value youth highly, these women have all the prospects in the world and simps lining up down the road willing to spend their weekly wage just to take them out for dinner, you think you can compete with that?

All the people ITT complaining should perhaps go back to the third world shitholes where they feel like kings and locals bow in subservience to them? Taiwanese don't give a shit about you nor need your poor asses.

because it shows a real bad lack of forward planning which is room temp IQ shit.

And you asked why I thought you were poor yet you complain about some retarded shit like that.

Lmao. If I wasn't concerned about the price until the night before I fly, that shows I'm financially comfortable, dipshit. Stop doing this retarded 4chan raging at everyone.
>>
>>2872368
Anon, I didn't say anything about price in the sentence you quoted. Just having a place to get your bearings after landing so you can figure out a good area without just trying to figure it out is a nice peace of mind. Like you're going to sit in the airport for some amount of time to wait for your flight, so just showing up without a plan is just dumb.

No one is saying you need to plan the full stay but not at least having a 2-3 night stay booked seems silly. Even when I was 23-24 and traveling I knew enough to at least book something to get a feel for the area before I dug in.

So is it like, a documented thing that women in Kaohsiung are hotter than the ones in Taipei? I just got to Kaohsiung yesterday and it seems like they've all got thicker asses, and they wear tighter and more revealing clothes. It seemed immediately apparent to me.

Maybe it's the warmer weather, or just being less of a business-class city?

Taiwan’s is very much less visually appealing and somewhat rundown compared to the immaculate and organized streets of Japan.
>>
>>2872475
Just about to fly to Taiwan. Used to live in China. China is immaculate. I guess Taiwan looks similar to Hong Kong in terms of cleanliness?
>>
>>2872482
I've only been to Hong Kong briefly, but I'd say Hong Kong is somewhat cleaner than Taipei. Neither really has trash strewn about, but also I wouldn't exactly want to drop something on the floor and then eat it either.

One morning in Taipei I inexplicably saw dozens and dozens of dead/dying roaches on the sidewalk, for blocks, might have been from the rain or city spraying them out. Was pretty nasty.

Kaohsiung is similar to Taipei except smellier overall, especially due to the motor bikes and sewers.

Certainly not the cleanest place I've ever been but not bad.

god damnit. I made well over $160k NTD at my job for the last 8 years (accounting) and they getting anal about what exactly I did since my CV can't be used as truth and the digital signed "this person was our employee and worked in finance" from my job (on company letterhead) was not sufficient apparently. I'm upset that everywhere I read, this application is usually painless besides having to wait for the visa to be issued. I'm a bit discouraged bros

Taiwanese ride around on scooters everywhere. They're also simultaneously dirty while being more uptight and autistic about rules than Japanese. Okinawans don't really give a fuck and are relaxed.
>>
>>2872475
Taiwan isn't rundown in the sense of neglected maintenance. But buildings are discolored due to year-round high humidity, and nobody gives them a pressure wash with bleach. Taiwanese don't idolize flashy glamorous appearance as a general rule. Practical functionality is more important to them.
>>2873609
The low-class restaurants pour their waste into the gutters. Taiwanese love their soup, and all that leftover broth gets poured in a bucket and then dumped down a storm grate.
>uptight and autistic about rules
Only time I encountered this was when I boarded a Tze Chiang train with an ordinary second-class train ticket. The second-class train was delayed by four hours, so I "accidentally" boarded the wrong train when it pulled into the station. The conductor demanded I pay for a Tze Chiang ticket plus a fine, but I just as stubbornly insisted that such a penalty only applied to those traveling without a ticket, and I had a ticket from Hualien to Yilan. To compromise, I agreed to get off at the next stop, which was 50 km ahead and within range of the local trains serving Yilan County.

One self-checkin hotel had me send a video of me dropping the exact cash payment into a dropbox before they would send me the room code. Showing up to welcome your guest? Fuck no, nobody got time for that.

Less to see and do than Taipei. Rents in Taipei aren't bad at all. It's easy to get to Taipei, of course, just hop on the HSR, but it take time and you'd better not miss the last train home or else you'll have to wait until the next morning.

Taoyuan has a lot more foreign factory workers, so it's easier to get laid there -- just go to the bars and clubs on the weekends and there will be hordes of Vietnamese and Thai girls who want to jump on a dick on their day off. IDK if Taichung has the same sort of scene there, they have factories so I assume they have foreign contract workers and the clubs for them tho.

IT'S TAIPEI COUNTY DAMMIT

I recommend the area up around Danshui. There are a couple of nice new buildings right by Hongshulin that are very convenient to the MRT and very inexpensive. I paid NT$20,000/mo for a top floor apartment with ocean view. Downside was that in summer my A/C was blasting on full power 24x7 to keep the place from incinerating me, easily US$300/mo in July and August.

Why the fuck aren't you shopping at Costco? You can buy Norway farmed salmon and "Boston butt" pork steaks for not much at all. Grab a couple of their chicken caesar salads from the food court to put in your fridge, they'll last two days and give you some roughage.
>>
>>2869864
IDK if you're still looking, Anon, but try AirBNB. I got a really nice apartment in the Q-Square mall across from Taipei Main Station for something like $60/night. It was far better than any hotel I ever stayed in in the Taipei area. Only problem was that I had to go into the underground maze to get from that building to the MRT because the street-level road crossings are just fucking impossible.

>Many places smell like sewer shit.
This is because Taiwanese plumbers have not discovered the miracle of the U-trap. Seriously, if you check the pipes they just go straight down to the sewers. Depending on how the wind is blowing, it will often force air into the sewers and hence up into all of the apartments.

In my apartment, I literally had to tape over the drains on the floors. Once I did that, with the only open vent being in the shower (which had a 24x7 running vent fan), the smell was gone.

Here anon, me >>2873635 again.

This is the one I s tayed in, Price has gone way up:
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1435238200966478772?search_mode=regular_search&adults=1&check_in=2026-04-22&check_out=2026-04-27&children=0&infants=0&pets=0&source_impression_id=p3_1775055040_P3SZNMMv0SSuJWwG&previous_page_section_name=1000&federated_search_id=2abbdd5d-ac01-48fc-8c73-51cc7f70a416

Basically the entire upper floors of the building are apartments, and I think they're all AirBnBs -- there are multiple virtual "hotels" that have bought up most if not all of the units, and there was a sign on the guard desk with phone numbers to call for several different helplines for these virtual "hotels". Right now, looking at the AirBnB map zoomed in on that Q-Square mall, there are fifteen different prices listed for fifteen different rooms in that building. Here's another one for 20% less:

https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/12897349?search_mode=regular_search&adults=1&check_in=2026-07-05&check_out=2026-07-10&children=0&infants=0&pets=0&source_impression_id=p3_1775055040_P37W_8gBEKtssmV-&previous_page_section_name=1000&federated_search_id=2abbdd5d-ac01-48fc-8c73-51cc7f70a416

If you zoom out a little on the AirBnB map, it looks like there are more available at other large mall-like buildings across the street and/or next to the Q-Square building. Lots of choices.

I've been in Taoyuan for a week now, I haven't seen 1 brown Asian.
Anyone know which cities to find them? Thinking of moving to New Taipei or Kaohsiung. I want to meet some Indo or Flip migrant worker, get married and breed her. The Taiwanese girls that match me on Tinder are low quality. Need brown and desperate. Please give advice

Some things I've noticed about Taiwan compared to China (lived in Chongqing 2 years)
>TW food is better
>TW people are friendlier
>TW people speak English more gooder
>safer to cross the road in TW. Cars stop for you
>Uglier matches on dating apps
>Scruffier, grittier but more character streets in TW
>So many bolt hole restaurants look like they've been running since the 60s
>TW people will wait for 10 minutes for a green walk light at a zebra crossing in a 7 foot wide alley at night with no cars in sight
>>
Anyone keen to try drinks again this weekend?
May as well go Maji, if it works it works

>>2873804
Yes they do what are you talking about?
The black mold stuff is all over those cities
Singapore does a little bit more to clean up because 70% of the buildings are government owned and get more regular cleans but otherwise its literally the same thing as in Taiwan
t.lived in all of those places for over a year
>>
>>2873805
It's a headfuck coming from seamonkey land where people will actually stop for you at crosswalks here
I've been beaten down so hard by south east asia that I stop and give way to cars on them out of instinct
