But Americans are used to having their bubble of personal space in public. So they feel blocked in when somebody comes close to them. Don't forget many Americans are fat as well, so they expect to be given a lot more space than usual when passing down a crowded sidewalk. With time in Asia, you learn to overcome that aversion to proximity.
