I bought a Peak Design 45L Travel Backpack that was from a guy who had ut RMAd(but not actually returned) for $120 because the front zipper was slightly broken. It’s been an excellent travel backpack for me with lots of space for clothes and gear. I was never questioned about the weight even on LCC despite carrying probably 15kg. And the zipper was easily fixed by just stitching the torn side back on.Lot’s of space and compartments and with lots of aftermarket components.I know they’re a bit pricey, but I’m very happy with this one.
I've been using the same Swiss Gear backpack I bought when I started to travel 16 years ago. Not the biggest but it's taken a hell of a lot of abuse and is still my go-to carryon/day bag. Probably get another 16 years out of it at this rate
>>2877594>2 pairs of shoesThis sounds like bloatI myself i'm currently looking for all-purpose shoes that look good when paired with casual t-shirts and more professional shirts
>>2877668flip flips
>>2877594I bring kz iems for my thinkpad and as backups for my samsung beans. I have replaced my t420s with a t14 gen 2 and run xubuntu and the upgrade was enormous. I've used a cheap duffle and was forced to check it and then it was falling apart from being checked once and a (cheap) security camera I had inside was broken into pieces. I use a cheap timberland hardshell roller these days and it fits a lot but the casters are complete trash and the drag when rolling it sucks. I've also used a hiking backpack plus an underseat backpack and it just plain fucking sucks. I'll be buying a better hardshell carry on like the level 8 or away one in the op.
>>2877668Quoddy blucher mocs are the ones I'm going to buy next. They can be dressed up to business casual level but are cool, are completely leather so can be worn sockless, and are casual enough for a tee shirt and cargo pants. They're also resolable and repairable and will last as long as boots.
>>2877654I just avoid zippers on backpacks. I've been using the same 20L as my small underseat backpack for 12 years. It has metal and leather hardware and no zippers. The only piece that has real wear is the drawstring. I just oil the leather and spray it with some scotch guard occasionally.>>2877657I had one of these and dropped a weight on the plastic strap adjuster and shattered it while using it as a gym bag.
>>2877668one to wear, one in the bag. two is optimal because alternating pairs decays them slower than having only one pair
>>2877573>Osprey bag with laptop+phone+headphones >one charging block+USBC/Laptop Cord+Universal Adapter.3 outfits+1 comfy outfit and that's it, anything else is bloat.
>>2877705Packup stuff is the best.
>>2877706Get a puffer, a rain jacket or windbreaker, and light hiking style pants that roll up and take up less space.
>>2877707Something like kuhl pants that roll up into nothing for space.
>>2877573What about day bags for hikes and stuff? I'm probably going to get a string bag for my upcoming Balkans trip for carrying water bottles and food
>>2877730I usually throw in an adidas one just to have a little bag when I go places. I got it at like ross or tj max or something for ~15 bucks
Is there honestly any point buying the expensive suitcases over the cheapest 4.5 star one on amazon?
>>2877758Durability, the casters and bearings, rigidity of the telescoping handle, zipper durability, stability when standing up. There's a reason flight crews all use travel pros. Nothing worse than a broken caster or fucked telescoping handle in the middle of a trip.
>>2877760boomer logic>>2877758nah
>>2877770Nah I have a shitty hardshell and it's shitty. Caster drag sucks because of the shitty bearings, loose handle sucks.
>>2877773Hard shells are for noobs
>>2877796The actual case itself isn't the problem. It's the casters and the telescoping handle that sucks.
>>2877594You travel with two laptops, an iPad AND a radio? Jesus Christ, that's way too many electronics.>>2877668If your shoes get soaking wet in a rainstorm, you'll be glad to have a pair of sandals on hand while you wait for your shoes to dry out again. Wet shoes make the soles of my feet very itchy after a while.>>2877573When I return to America I'll have to make space for food, water and camping gear in my luggage, as self-reliance is a must for a foot traveler. That means a bunch of shit will have to go, like all electronics apart from my one main phone. Some clothes will have to get thrown away as well, not a problem because many of them are old and wornout. Right now I have three pairs of long pants (plus the one I'm wearing) and seven pairs of everything else.
>>2877818The electronics are luxuries, not necessities, but all of them combined take up less space than a single jacket. And they make money and make me productive at learning language so they're worth it
>>2877573I bought the cabin-sized Travel Pro Walkabout 6. Very happy with it. And so far it handled way more weight than it should be allowed to without breaking a sweat (or its wheels). Pretty cheap on sale + by using additional discount codes. I'm set up for the next 30 years.
>>2877865I like having buy it for life items as well.

>>2879235You're not on vacation; you're unemployed.
>>2877573I bought picrel, a 21-inch Travelpro Platinum Elite, a few years ago and constantly run out of space, even when packing conservatively. I like Travelpro but want something slightly bigger for carry-on luggage. Any suggestions?
>>2879459>21-inch Travelpro Platinum EliteThis is already 45L, and it's actually 23". It's already the max size you can get. I'd say you should max out your underseat backpack, get one that is around 30L and still fits under the seat.
>>2879477Also, roll your clothes, don't fold them. And buy wool blend shirts that are antimicrobial. You only need 2 pairs of pants and you will wear one on the plane. I don't see how 45L is too little for you unless you're packing way too voluminous of clothing. Take packable jackets. Take only low top shoes that are compressible and don't have giant wedges for soles.
>>2877796>Hard shells are for noobs>>2879457>Apparently soft-shell rollers are cringe.inb4 backpacks are for school kids and duffel bags are giant purses
>>2879479I like a hard shell so I can pack in electronics if necessary and I don't have to fear it getting checked. Soft rollers are for people who want to overstuff the fuck out of a bag.
>>2879458Uhhh Based department??
>>2879511I have a nice scratched-up strip down the middle of my laptop screen from my backpack getting squeezed into luggage racks on bumpy rides. >>2879228The big screen and keyboard are very helpful for poring over the map to figure out where you can go, selecting a hotel when you have fifty different options, writing blogposts, creating travel maps, etc. I wouldn't bring a laptop on a trekking trip, but if my luggage spends 90% of its time sitting on the floor in my hotel room, why not.>>2879458No pussy no work>>2879478Cotton and natural fiber shirts work just fine. How do you manage when both pairs of pants are in the washing machine. Do you put your phone & wallet in your backpack and walk around in your swimming trunks?
>>2879571>Cotton and natural fiber shirts work just fine. How do you manage when both pairs of pants are in the washing machine. Do you put your phone & wallet in your backpack and walk around in your swimming trunks?I don't wash my pants unless they're physically dirty. I just change my underwear. My normal pants are these. They have a waterproof coating and zipper vents on the side to keep you cool.
>>2879613
>>2879614These are my preferred underwear and I pack 2 per travel day. They don't mash the fuck out of your balls or let them stick to your legs.
>>2879639And I have this duluth groove belt that is plastic buckled so if you're at a small airport with only metal detectors instead of the human microwave, you don't have to remove it. It has a 96 year warranty so if it cracks or anything you can turn it in at any duluth for a new one.
>>2879642And then I just wear this windbreaker. It zips into that kangaroo pocket which is huge and doesn't count as a 3rd bag so you basically have a fanny pack. It's comfortable from 45-85F although it isn't very waterproof. But I spray it with scotch guard if I need some more waterproofing or I bring my 3 ply packable rain jacket if I know it will be very rainy.
>>2879571Also wool is a natural material. Those merino tees are 87% wool 13% nylon. Wool is antimicrobial and won't stink like cotton does. Nylon is added for strength because the tees are thin. It also dries faster than cotton if wet and is hydrophobic to begin with.
>>2879479>backpacks are for school kids>duffel bags are giant pursesThey are, though.
>>2879613I'm sure you get mad pussy with your dirty pants. Why not trying clean clothes and flexing like a Rolex? Or something besides sneakers?
>>2879669Yeah nah everybody knows that pants are like jackets. You don't wash a jacket every time you wear it. You change your shirt. You don't wash pants every time you wear them do you? Just wear clean underwear and hang them up. For example you should only wash jeans every 3-6 months of regular use, on cold, and hang dry.
>>2879759My smartphone takes better photos than that ancient piece of sony junk.Less weight, Smaller device, Better resolution, Better image stabilization, Better video (all around), Better color accuracy, Better dynamic range, Better zoom, Better portraits, Better wide-angle, Better low-light photography, More options, Easier to use, Longer battery life, Easier to manage photos, Easier to export, Photos are geotagged, Photos are automatically backed up.I could understand bringing a travel camera like A7 with a huge f1.4 lens if you're shooting low-light photography or you need giga-zoom 400mm lenses but for any other use, no my 2025 smartphone absolutely SHITS on your sony apsc.
>>2879783You bought chinkshit with no resale and fucking magnet 'lenses'
>>2879459I pair mine with the Black Hole MLC 45L. I hate checking bags, and with those two, I have more than enough room for 3 or 4 weeks while doing laundry once or twice and being prepped for most any weather conditions. I can bring my DSLR, laptop/iPad, a book, and have room for souvenirs. It's a super-efficient setup.
>>2880634The Black Hole is too big to be a personal item.
>>2880854This, you would never get away with it under the seat. Max would be like 30-35L in a rectangular backpack shape that could be smashed under there. Reasonably though, the max is like 25L.
>>2877594>>2877818>>2879228i want to take 2 laptops for my vacation (3 weeks vacation + 2 months remote work actually) - one is strictly work laptop, second is more for meetups, fucking around with ableton and various hobbyist stuff. Company has lot of security related hoops so its servers that can be accessed through work laptop. Thoughts on the plan?how do i pack them?I plan to take only a luggage + decathlon big backpack to not have to pay for registered. Europe->Asia tripLOT airline which apparently is strict on backage sizes for intercontinental travel
>>2880862I've done this domestically by putting the small one into the underseat and the large one into a hardshell overhead. I got a portable monitor, a roland audio interface, a clamp on mic stand, mic, sennheiser cans, and xlr in there too.
>>2880862if you have a lot of electronics the best thing you can get is a GaN charger. If you get high enough watts you can charge everything off of a single small brick. And some of them have detachable outlet cables so you dont have to worry about converters, you can just buy the native cable before you go. for laptops i have a macbook that fits perfectly in the laptop sleeve of my small backpack, and a thinkpad that is built like a tank so I just throw it inside the duffle. if your backpack is too big they wont let you do personal item btw
>>2880922Did you at least replace the shitty 1366x768 tn pannel on the ancient thinkpad?
>>2880971i bought the ips replacement screen in china. it was like $8 or something. but i'm waiting for the screwdriver to come. i use it as a jellyfin server in my current setup so it's not that pressing
>>2880981What about the LVDS to eDP adapter, did the screen come with it?
>>2881012Also did you remove the disc drive to add a second hdd if you are using it as a jellyfin server
>>2881012it doesnt have that because its the same resolution as stock. its not the 1080p mod>>2881013i kept the internal hdd, added an ssd, and use an external 1tb hdd
>>2881022If it's jellyfin and you're using an external 1tb hdd what is the point exactly? Just bring a 4tb hdd with the movie files. Do you have a firestick or something you're plugging into TVs? Why not just bring the one laptop, a bigger external storage drive, and plug it directly into these TVs? Or keep a good sized server at home and tunnel back to it.
>>2877573I like my everlane renew transit
What do you guys like to use for daypacks?I have no issues with standard carry-on and checked luggage. Backpacks and suitcases have a proven track record, no need to reinvent the wheel. Pack 'em, fly 'em, and leave 'em in your room while you go out.But I'm always open to exploring new ideas for daypacks. I'm not gonna use a 40L carry-on backpack for everyday use. Even a 20L can be too much.
>>2881048uhhh your backpack, the same one that goes under the seat. If you want another smaller bag put in a cinch bag, takes up no space.
>>2881059Or get a pack up bag from REI or another outdoor brand.
>>2881024i watch the content on ipad. external storage is low. it's a pain to delete and remove shows over again. my loadout doesnt require any external monitors or tv, and i'm not paying for any home address so no home server. if i had a home address i might even leave the old laptop there, but everything i own must come with me
>>2881048your personal item is your daypackyour carryon has the rest of your stuffyou don't need checked luggage
>>2881083The fuck just use the macbook and an external ssd. You're bloating 2 extra devices for no reason
>>2881092nah not carrying that shit around the kitchen
>>2881093>Watching movies on an ipad while walking around a kitchen
>>2881096yeah, while eating or on the couch or in bed
Canvas parachute bag. It will fit in any overhead cuz it’s soft and it clears as a carry on item while having check in bag volume in reality. Plus, it’s a portable bean bag chair. If you get the shoulder strap you can put one arm through one of the handles and the shoulder strap on the other and it rocks like a backpack almost. Bonus: qt French airport security girls will mistake you for a mercenary.
>>2881107I guess TNG is a good friend substitute

>>2880031This youtuber compared the Xiaomi 17 Ultra to a Sony A7C (a $5,000 camera setup MUCH better than what you are using). He was extremely impressed by the Xiaomi and found it was very difficult to tell the difference between the Xiaomi and Sony photos. Watch for yourself. The gap between the cameras is tiny. The only situation where the Xiaomi lost was in low-light video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XwJ_nPJXjU>>2881251Another youtuber compared the Xiaomi 17 Ultra to an old film camera (i.e. your Zenit shitbox). He was also extremely impressed by the Xiaomi and gave continual praise. The Xiaomi takes faster photos, performs better in low light, has superior colors, and is way simpler to use.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k68jNEsbrT4Chinese futuristic technology has SHIT on your prehistoric last-century crayon cameras. >>2881370I got a Proteca carbon fiber case about 8 years ago. Lifetime warranty, made in Japan, and ridiculously light. Definitely the best luggage case I own.
>>2881428fucking little pinks everywhere these days
>>2881428You realize it's just post processing the photos automatically, right?
>>2881729You realize it's taking half a dozen photos using a 1-inch sensor, all taken at different exposure levels. These are taken from a continuous rolling shutter of previous frames so there is zero lag. Then it aligns all these photos to be pixel perfect, and combines them seamlessly into a single photo?Xiaomi combines multiple photos taken at different exposures into a single photo. This is how they achieve more accurate colors and properly exposed photos. Shadows have more detail. Highlights are less blown out. Colors are better. Xiaomi creates better photos even with a smaller sensor, because it uses superior technology. In night mode, the effect is even greater, Xiaomi will take 10-20 photos and combine them into a single color accurate photo. DSLR and film cameras take *one* single photo and *one* exposure. This leads to 1) blown out highlights 2) underexposed shadows.DSLR and film cameras are simply inferior technology. Film cameras are stuck at a single exposure and could never match this. DSLR could compete, but they are sold by dinosaur companies that can't keep pace with superior technology. Why would anyone use a product that is 1) worse 2) heavier 3) more bulky 4) more expensive 5) harder to use? The future is already here.
