What is the New Orleans of your country?

I need a backup plan for incase America really shits the bed.
Must:
Good weather
Be a proper city
Be in a stable liberal country
Be cool and fun like New Orleans
Preferably speaks English or French.

I'm serious. I need another city like New Orleans.

>>
>New Orleans

>Good weather

Lolwut?
>>
>>2878995
New Orleans has great weather about 8 months out of the year. Not too bad.
>>
>>2878992
New Orleans is a shithole. It's genuinely not difficult to find somewhere nicer to live unless you're in Louisiana, which is just an awful state to live in.
>>
>>2878998
Let me guess, you're scared of "crime" (black people)?
I need a place with soul and culture. if hiding in a suburb your whole life is good enough for you then go right ahead.

>Good weather

>Preferably speaks English or French.
Go to India sir we very good weather we proper we stable we liberal we have space program sir we cool and fun sir we speak the english sir we dark skin and soul and culture and BBC just like black people sir I swear it sir come and see sir
>>
>>2878996
You must love humidity, thunderstorms and gray winter rain if you think NOLA weather is great.
>>2879001
>if I love them and show kindness to them, they won't hurt me!
White liberal women literally walk the streets believing this shit.
You can find plenty of soul and culture at a bluegrass festival, but what you won't find is the "culture" of bumping and grinding in the sweaty tropical heat, so evidently that's a dealbreaker for you.
>>
Bait used to be believable.
>>
>>2879043
I have a theory that all of you people claim to be scared of crime but in actuality you just use it as a convenient excuse to be racist. But it's fine. You're the one living an uninteresting life.
>>
>>2878996

New Orleans is unbearably hot and humid for most of the year, being located directly in the middle of a muggy swamp. It rains almost every single day, usually with heavy storming, and they get hit by at least three hurricanes every summer.

If there is a place with worse weather than New Orleans, I surely cannot think of it.
>>
Anyways, to answer your question, OP: Martinique or Reunion would probably be your best bets.
>>
>>2879131
I appreciate finally getting a real answer. Those aren't cities tho
>>
>>2879130
Don't tell me about New Orleans weather. I live here. We get a solid 8 months of good weather.
>>
>>2879001
>Let me guess, you're scared of "crime" (black people)?
Yes, not a big fan. And neither are you, or else you'd be living in Baton Rouge.

> if hiding in a suburb your whole life is good enough for you then go right ahead
You almost certainly live in Metairie or Kenner, because you are quite reasonably a pussy.

>I need a place with soul and culture
Boston, Atlanta, NYC
>>
>>2878992
If you’re serious, then some port city in the Caribbean or Latin America with a large black population. English or French speaking means Kingston or Port au Prince but that’s even more violent than NO. Probably some Spanish speaking city, which tracks as New Orleans was a Spanish colonial city almost as long as French. Great food, music, architecture, tropical climate, hurricanes, bugs, murders—take your pick. Santo Domingo, San Juan, some Colombian or Venezuelan port, even Havana.
>>
>>2878992
>Good weather
Lol
>>
>>2879135

>I live here.

So do I. I live in the French Quarter. We do not have good weather. You are seriously delusional if you think otherwise.
>>
>>2879139
The Marigny.
I don't like crime but it's not even close to being a deal breaker.

>>2879186
Agree to disagree I guess.
How do you like living in the Quarter?
>>
>>2879196

I love the culture and atmosphere here. The weather and the crime, not so much.
>>
>>2879225
If we get the crime down a few notches this town would be the next big thing. It has everything that urbanist nerds like. I have no idea why everyone is sleeping on New Orleans.

Maybe someday. But then again, crime keeps the boring people out and the houses cheap.
>>
>>2879239
I grew up in Baton Rouge and for me and my friends, a regular part of the New Orleans experience was getting mugged or your car broken into, not to mention harassed and shaken down by corrupt NOPD. I live far away now and haven’t been back post Katrina but do tourists get jumped on a regular basis? In NYC, crime is mostly a thing in certain outer borough neighborhoods and even in Detroit you have to go looking for trouble or be really unlucky. Louisiana always seemed like mayhem could break out anytime anywhere.
>>
>>2879261
My truck got broken into once. That's been my only real experience with crime. Katrina was before my time so I can't say for sure, but I feel like it's gotten a lot better since then. I've been told that the Marigny and Bywater used to be rough. They're pretty nice neighborhoods nowadays.
I'm also huge so I'm not a likely target for crime. Probably has something to do with it.
>>
>>2879239
>I have no idea why everyone is sleeping on New Orleans.
Because of the crime and lack of opportunities for yuppies. Are you a personal injury attorney? Doctor? In the line of succession of a successful family business? If the answer to that is No, the state tells you to go fuck yourself.

We see this cycle every decade or so. Subsidies bring in X industry enamored with the romance of the bayou and Crescent City. Professionals from Tulane, LSU, and out of state hop on. The workers and companies grow disillusioned with the basket case of the state and city and low quality of life. They fuck off after 10-15 years. This happened with film. This happened with tech. This even happened with petroleum, since a lot of those guys fucked off to Houston.

New Orleans should be the Chicago of the South, but it is such a corrupt, dysfunctional shithole that Houston, DFW and Atlanta slurp up most of its young professionals, since there are very few professional pipelines.
>>
>>2879280
>New Orleans should be the Chicago of the South
It’s the Detroit of the South, the southernmost Rust Belt city, and it’s been on a long slow decline since the late 19th century when it was the wealthiest city in the South. Railroads, highways and airlines made shipping less vital and even though it’s still a major port there’s no need for masses of labor to load and unload ships. Shipbuilding is all but dead. The petrochemical industry comes with a ruinous environmental cost and is slowly fading. The next big hurricane will hit sooner or later. You can’t keep a city going on charm and tourism. Global capital doesn’t want to deal with banana republic corruption and poor education. It’s one of America’s few great cities but will always be a hot mess.
>>
>>2879139
This might be the most retarded post on the entire board
I can think of two more soulless cities in the US than NYC and Boston
Throw Philly in their for good measure maybe, but at least they have their "we're literally the biggest assholes" culture
Boston and NYC have nothing
>>
>>2879424
>NYC have nothing
NYC is such a dominant force that every 2nd and 3rd rate American city keeps trying to turn their yuppie neighborhoods into early 2010s hipster-era Brooklyn. It's so dominant that it's invisible.
>>
>>2878992
>I need another city like New Orleans
Rio - similar culture, demographics, nice neighborhoods never more than a few blocks from the ghetto, carnival is a bigger better mardi gras and the weather is better all year

>>2879239
>It has everything that urbanist nerds like
It's also packed with blacks, which those people don't actually like living around no matter how much they say they do
>>
>>2879447
they want one black family in their neighborhood who they only see rarely and who is whisper quiet and professional and makes no noise at all so they can tell others they don't live in a white flight neigbhorhood
they don't want to actually get to know black people or talk to them beyond cursory interactions (not that I blame them, but I'm not pretending to be "anti-racist")
>>
Seychelles is nice. Mauritius isn't bad. Both have comparable cultures without the massive crime.
>>
>>2879666
How about Zanzibar?
Seems like a fabled place.
>>
>>2879666
>>2879668
You guys are missing the "proper city" part.
>>
>>2879225
the only reason new orleans has any culture left is because the weather and the crime scares away the normies
>>
>>2880218
I noticed this: back in the 60s there was major white flight to Metairie but Metairie today is a boring trashy hole. It has much less crime but the people who left didn't take any culture with them. I think this is solid evidence of what you're talking about. The people who stay away from New Orleans because of crime wouldn't make it better anyway.
>>
>>2880218
New Orleans is what it’s always been, a tropical polyglot port city with corruption, crime and a laissez faire attitude towards life. The exotica makes it a tourist magnet but it’s always going to be the “northernmost banana republic” rather than a regular American city.
>>
>>2879424
NYC is the only real city in America no matter how much you cope, sorry
>>
>>2880322
Tennessee Williams said America has three cities, New York San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everything else is cleavland.
I personally agree with that. Might ad Chicago to the list.
>>
>>2880468
>Atlanta is Cleveland
>Portland is Cleveland
>Honolulu is Cleveland
>>
>>2880473
Atlanta and Honolulu are not Cleveland but they are not real cities by any stretch. Portland could actually be a real (though small) city if not due to bad government
>>
>>2880473
I didn't make the list, bub. I might also add Philly to it now that I'm thinking about it. You could make an argument for Portland I still wouldn't put it on the list though.
Atlanta and Honolulu? certainly not. Honolulu is basically a giant strip of hotels with very little authentic culture and no decent downtown.
Atlanta is big and it has an airport and some decent rappers. That's it. downtown is garbage. No unique local culture besides the aforementioned rappers.
>>
>>2880484
Miami and LA are big omissions
>>
>>2880491
They're just fancier Atlantas.
>>
>>2880491
Absolutely not real cities. Honestly even New Orleans being on the list is questionable. A truly reasonable 'real cities of America' list would probably be NYC, DC (barely), Boston, Chicago, San Francisco. Philly and Seattle honorable mentions.
>>
>>2880500
New Orleans doesn't have a huge population but it's maxxed out the other stats.
Culture
Events
Architecture
History
Cultural relevance

New York has a legacy of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, hip hop and punk but New Orleans/south Louisiana spawned more music across multiple genres than any American city of its size.
Professor Longhair was just one piano virtuoso in a line stretching back to the 1800s. “Go to the Mardi Gras” is an unofficial carnival anthem.

Atlanta is like modern New Orleans but with an actual economy if you aren't a personal injury attorney or groomed to inherit a successful family business.

Thanks anon. I like this version from Easy Rider with street musicians. They shot some Mardi Gras scenes then later added film of Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in the French Quarter.
>>
>>2880500
This is incredibly stupid
All those cities are basically the same thing except maybe DC
LA and New Orleans are far more unique than any of those places, for better or worse

>>2880752
>Atlanta is New Orleans.
Incredibly retarded
New Orleans is unique and soulful
Atlanta is a truckstop
>>
>>2880880
>All those cities are basically the same thing except maybe DC
You mean they're all actual cities? Yeah no shit
>LA and New Orleans are far more unique
Uniqueness has nothing to do with it
>>
>>2880901
>Uniqueness has nothing to do with it
In the spirit of the Tennessee Williams quote, it does.
We're not talking about census zones here.
>>
>>2880901
DC here. Rescue me!
>>
>>2880918
Come to New Orleans, brother.
>>
>>2880916
If by census zones you mean population it should be clear Im not talking about that otherwise I'd include LA. I am qualifying city in the sense that most of the non-US world would qualify a city, ie, mainly pertaining but not limited to density and viability of living without a personal vehicle. Cultural/ethnic uniqueness is beside the point. By that measure Minneapolis is one of the world's great cities for its one-of-a-kind Scandi-Somali blend! Or is that already common in Scandinavia itself...
>>
>>2881073
That is such a shove-your-head-up-your-ass-and-call-it-a-hat retarded way of defining a city
>>
>>2881073
Yeah bro, you're not getting the point here.
>>
>>2881074
I'm willing to accept points off for my own poor articulation of the point, but the point itself is obviously valid if you can try to get what Im saying. If you told someone to envision big city life, they obviously would imagine somewhere like Manhattan, not Atlanta.

>>2881075
Enlighten me
>>
>>2881076
The quote is by an American play writer named Tennessee Williams. The quote goes "America has three cities, New York San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everything else is Cleveland"

What he's talking about isn't what can be measured, it's about cities feeling special. NYC, NOLA and SanFran feel special. Atlanta, Minneapolis, Cleveland really don't, at least not like those three do.
>>
>>2881077
Oh sure never heard the quote but no argument there
>>
>>2879447
>It's also packed with blacks, which those people don't actually like living around no matter how much they say they do
speaking as someone who's only visited New Orleans as a tourist I was quite impressed by how non-obnoxious the blacks were compared to other parts of the country
That said, I was amused that my progressive friends I was visiting down there had seemingly no black friends and that all the cool Mardi Gras events were like 95% white people
>>
>>2883530
The older blacks are easygoing and polite to clueless wandering tourists, the wealthy tourist blacks on vacation only want to have fun, but the young hoodlums (15-25 year old males) murder and rob each other at apocalyptic rates.
>>2880298
A good description of the city right here. It's always shocking how rundown the place is, and how everybody acts like it's perfectly fine for things to be that way.
>>2880218
>scares away the normies
What are you talking about? NOLA is chock full of loud shouting faggot normies on vacation. Of course they wouldn't ever want to live there, but Bourbon Street is a literal zoo of extroverted normalfags leaving their uptight careercuck lives behind and letting loose.

BTW Bourbon Street is no blacker than any other tourist hotspot in America. And the blackest neighborhoods in NOLA are no-go zones where you'll find all the gangbanger shit, which any respectable white person stays a mile away from. Anyone who pretends like they feel comfortable hanging out with hoodlums outside the ghetto corner store "because I'm not a racist pussy like you guys" is either a druggie wigger or a LARPer. Truth is, you avoid driving down those streets, never talk about that part of town with anyone, and pretend like it doesn't exist.
