planning this itinerary for early summer. any things I should add or cut out? is 3 weeks too short?
>>2879795add in hole in the ground next to crater lake
Why do you stop at Missoula and not go the extra 3 hours to see Glaicer. There's nothing in Missoula worth seeing on its own besides the smoke jumper museum.
I've done every place on your itinerary. I personally would not do Utah unless you're going the first week of June. They get horrid weather in the summer. July and August are unbearable. I would stick to the coast and the mountains. Cruise all the way up route 1 from LA to SF, do Muir woods, cut over to Yosemite. Go to Lake Tahoe. Do Lassen Volcanic, Mount Shasta, Crater lake, Bend, Mount Hood, do the waterfalls on the hood river(Multnomah falls), then cruise all the way back down route 1.
>>2879902Planning to go second week of June, also am Australian, if that changes things>>2879823That's ultimately what I want to do, I just feel like I'm biting off more than I can chew
>>2879922Honestly it's worth it, even if you're just driving through. The Going to the Sun Road should be open by mid June, we had a shit winter with no snow. You don't even have to hike if you dont want to, you can drive up 93 from Missoula, enter the park on the West Entrance and take the GTTS out to the east, then drive down the front to Bozeman.
I'm Aussie, me n a mate did a similar route last year in summer. Absolutely deluxe. Ours was the other way around to yours though. The small towns are incredible. Make sure to go through Grants Pass OR, and Mt Vernon WA. Mt Hood just near Portland is great too, the town of Sandy is so much fun.Go up to Seattle, then head further north for the North Cascades NP. On the way over definitely go through Coeur d'Alene in Idaho for a stop over. Sequoia NP is really cool, big ass trees. Yosemite was alright, good views, but if you haven't booked ahead you won't be able to camp there. We camped up at Saddlebag Lake which had snow in July, super cool.Aside from that, just have fun. We camped almost every night aside from a few when we needed a shower. The locals are typically really friendly once they realise you're from another country. Beers are cheap.
>>2879970holy shit that road looks incredible, there's no way I'm missing that. driving the N222 douro valley was one of the best things i've ever seen but GTTS looks like it mogs it
Death Valley is epic but I can’t imagine going there in the summer. You’ll see enough desert scenery as it is but if you’re ever around in the colder months it’s worth it, especially if there’s a superbloom of desert flowers.
>>2879795montana native here, its quite boring, why not drive to seattle from wyoming? better scenery
>>2880295I was there in summer and it honestly wasn't that bad. We went to that old mining town the youtube guy owns, did the walking tour, it was hot but not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
>>2879922Try to plan to hit the big national parks like Yellowstone, Zion, Bryce and Yosemite on weekdays. They're 10 times more crowded on weekends. Don't stay in LA. If you want to do southern California, stay in Orange County near the beach. It's nicer, whiter and safe. Stop in Lava Hot Springs Idaho for a night. Tubing the river and staying in the historic hot spring hotels is one of my favorite things to do near Yellowstone. Vegas is insanely hot in the summer. Don't plan on hiking or camping in Nevada. For a budget hotel, book any casino on Fremont Street.
>>2880544Staying in silverlake with friends, plus I've already spent time in LA before, it's the same as any other big city - some parts are great some parts aren'tLava Hot Springs looks great, was eyeing that off recently. Ty for rec
Hey guys, I'm travelling from Los Angeles to Denver and I raw dogged the Sam Stowe campground in Utah. Just used the cover of darkness and parked up next to some bushes near the entrance without paying or making a reservation. Had a pretty good sleep. Had to take a shit in the morning cause I went to the Buffalo Wild Wings in St. George and I just had to have flamin' wings. I just popped a squat behind the bushes and let it all out on the gravel. Felt a lot better. Afterwards just covered it up like a cat in a litterbox, lol. Had to sacrifice a sock to wipe, but it was no big deal. Do you guys have any experience raw dogging campsites and do you have any recommendations for campsites that are easy to raw dog or worth raw dogging?
>>2879795The entire eastern section of your trip will fucking suck. Driven it multiple times to see family and friends. Only a couple random, out of the way spots in Utah will be interesting. Mid to northern Idaho will finally start to get not completely gay
>>2882291Prindar I'm not going to tell you how to get free campsites.
