Yeah you can set up a yen specific wallet like we did, load it with wonga and set it as your default, or it will just auto convert the currency from dollars or whatever you use.
you might be able to load up your wallet with yen when the conversion rate is good and save yourself some money I guess

Yes, that's exactly what I did.

Kinda want to get an opinion I was talking to this girl at a girl bar. only english speaking girl and I pretty much hung out with her the entire night. She goes to me and says let me walk you back to your hotel we walk to the hotel turns and says bye and rides off on her bike home. Is this like a common thing that happens?
>>

If you had made a move, she probably would have accused you of rape. she walked you back to the hotel out of the kindness of her heart. It depends on the bar, but many of the girls who work part-time at hostess bars are actually quite serious and responsible. Many of them work at boutiques or beauty salons during the day and are earnestly striving to eventually open their own shops.

what do you guys carry around with you? like a backpack or one of those shoulder bags?
i feel like having a backpack would be nice to hold everything (trash, rechargable battery, goshuincho, umbrella) etc etc, but does walking around with a backpack all day get annoying?
also shoulder bags look kinda...gay? am i just a boomer and are these fine now, they just dont seem to hold much of anything besides wallet/passport/yen
thoughts?
>>
>>2880013
I use a backpack. i keep a water bottle, phone charger, umbrella, passport, some meds. its light enough to not be annoying.
>>
>>2880013
backpack when shopping and a very small chest bag for passport, money etc.
>>
>>2880013
backpacks are a pain in the ass when you sit down on a train, bus or even a restaurant in Japan. With a shoulder bag you can just shift it to the front when you sit down. you also could be bumping your pack into people without noticing on a crowded train. I'd assume it's pretty annoying since most Japanese don't wear one. This is my second time i came to Japan in years with a backpack and it sucked so I immediately bought a shoulder bag to replace remembering back to why i switched to a shoulder bag all those years ago when i visited. I don't know if theres still the same stigma in Japan as a decade ago, but wearing a backpack made you also look like an otaku or a tourist. マジうざい死ね外人
>>
>>2880013
If you're planning to visit Japan in June or later, we recommend using a backpack, as the following items are essential when you're out and about: handheld fan, neck cooler, folding umbrella, cooling towel, sweat-wiping wipes, bottle cooler, salt candy, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a change of clothes.
>>
>>2880036
On crowded trains and buses, it is basic etiquette to hold your backpack in front of you.
>>
>>2880038
my point is its just must easier for you and everyone else to have a shoulder bag
>>
>>2880037
I will be in june and july, thanks! I will mostly only carry the uniqlo beltbag, which I will just put on the shoulder on my front. I will maybe buy an umbrella. And will get myself some linen trousers, shirt will be from uniqlo. Later one I will probably get some trousers from uniqlo.

If I go back, I feel like I should learn some Japanese. I'm too much of an empathetic pussy, so I don't like that I'm imposing my English upon them when I should know a little Japanese. I still got by fine, but it doesn't remove the feeling of being an entitled tourist jerk who is probably annoying.
>>
>>2880013
If you have a hotel room, why are you walking around with a backpack? How many hours are you going to spend walking around away from your hotel? Eight hours? How far are you straying from your hotel that a train ride can't get you back in like an hour?

You don't need a backpack for anything. Your phone and wallet are in your pocket. Your watch is on your wrist. Get a small, disposable umbrella if you know it's going to rain. Never in all my walking around did I need a backpack. You will look like even more of a tourist and have a clunky bag weighing you down with something extra to worry about.

I think I'll make it a priority to look for a sling bag when shopping.
I have one which came as a gift for fucking inFamous 2 for the PS3, kek, and I've been using it ever since, as I can't find any worthy replacement because they're all small as shit and you can barely fit a small bottle in them. I don't wanna risk damaging or losing mine in a trip overseas, as it is the best casual bag I've ever owned.

>マジうざい死ね外人
Then again, you're a dumb tourist, it shouldn't be a problem to look the part as long as you're not a hassle to people. You can always retread to your place to dress up properly if you go out at night to visit bars.
>>
>>2880086
You should. Only been there twice so far and I no longer want to visit if learning Japanese isn’t part of my plan which it now is. It’s a place that feels like I’ll only experience a small fraction of it if I refuse to learn the language

Any anons have an opinion of this itinerary?

>land in tokyo january 3rd, sleep
>shinkansen to osaka the next day, 1-2 days in osaka just doing himeji and taking it easy
>4th day on to kagawa for 4-5 days, hit ritsurin and the other highlights
>then ehime for 4-5 days, same plan
>day 14/15 domestic flight back to tokyo
>leave on day 18/19 after chill time hitting less common sites in tokyo, maybe a daytrip to chiba or yokohama

I'd want to spend less than $5K overall so lots of business hotels and not doing a lot of shows or buy-in stuff other than Himeji, Ritsurin and maybe a few art galleries.

Not happening. You'd basically be homeless in squalor at that budget. Budget AT LEAST $18-19k, just to be safe. And even that's pushing it, honestly.
>>

I've been to Japan before, retard. I'd be going solo this time and last time it was ~$9.5K for two people and that counted some expenses I wouldn't bother with this time (2 nights in a ryokan, reserved shinkansen tickets, premium economy plane tickets)

I was asking anons who know what they're talking about their opinion the regions I was going to and trying to have a discussion about Shikoku more generally.

Also, Awaji Island? Worth it for a day or two?

I'm considering using Takasaki as a base for hiking up a few mountains. It's cheap, conveniently located, and has good access to public transportation. The only problem is that Takasaki seems like a spectacularly boring place to kill a few days and anywhere west of Tokyo like Kofu or Chichibu is 2+ hours away. Is there anything good nearby?
>>
>>2880195
>a spectacularly boring place to kill a few days
If you're using it as a hub for trips elsewhere isn't that what you'd want? Go on a hike, come back tired, lounge around on a quiet evening sipping drinks and snacking on currypan before bed.
>>
>>2880179
I spent 3 months in Chiba last year and spent like 8k including flights and lodging.
Just don't be a retard with your money and book things in advance.
>>
>>2880198
>and book things in advance
You don't even need to worry about that if you go in January. It's the only month of the year where the country is cheap.
>>
>>2880196
I can't do them all on consecutive days so I'll have to spend at least one, more likely two days resting up somewhere. Nagano and Niigata aren't too far away on the shinkansen, but I don't really want to pay 17,000 round trip for fucking Niigata.

on my flight back to LA right now after spending 7 months living in Fukuoka for a 6 month language school term. Well, it was actually 1 year long but I decided to leave after the first half for various reasons. I'm gonna do a small blog.

I definitely now understand the "I'll visit but not live there" crowd as before I was one of the people who couldn't relate to that and just wanted to live there no matter what. Whilst Japan definitely has a permanent charm in a lot of little ways, like food, safety, transportation, amenities etc, the charm of actually living your life there is very different. Being a foreigner is such a big headache nowadays especially with the anti foreigner sentiment going on now. I'm a 6'0 in shape white guy for reference so I probably got the better treatment. You can't shake off that feeling of walking into a place and feeling like you stick the fuck out because yes you do no matter how much you think you dont. The unspokenness of the people is also very frustrating especially when you get to the level (both socially and language wise) to understand what they are really saying or suggesting to you.

I have so much more to rant about but I would say I had a great experience, however it is NOT a place to live long term. I can't imagine the gaijins who got married or had a kid and are trying to integrate (or dealing with a divorce which is great entertainment on r/japanlife). And not to mention just how many jeets and south east asians they are letting into the country. There is no chance that will work out in the long term.

Not that guy, but if you were going to Shinkansen to Kyushu from Osaka. You could stop over in Okayama which is across from Shikoku, they have the Kurashiki Bikan Old Town. Hiroshima is the next city over on the way to Kyushu. It's a small city, but ofc the atom bomb sites may be a bit heavy.
As for Osaka:
Osaka Castle
Shinsekai and eat the kushikatsu there.
Dendentown if you like video games and anime.
Dotonbori is like their Times Square. Lots of restaurants.
Shinsaibashi is the live music area.
Minoh Falls is just outside Osaka, nice hike to a waterfall.

The guys who get married tend to integrate with their neighbors, wife's family and coworkers well. Assuming they don't try to push their Western worldview on them too hard. Only issue is if they move to a new town, they are starting from square one each time. BTW, you'd get treated differently even when I was there 10+ years ago. The key is realizing how much they hate interacting with people period. 10x that for foreigners who are wildcards who can embarrass them and expose their lack of English speaking ability. Now that it's a constant stream of tourists, things are probably worse.
They rotate which 3rd worldies they let in, they've tried Iranians and Brazilians in the past to dismal results. They are looking for the mythical foreigner group that will come in and integrate to their specific breed of autism. They will be looking for a long time.
>>
>>2880335
sorry can't help with that, I haven't see much of the rural/non-tourist places, I did explore a bit Hiroshima and quite liked it, it also served as a base for day trip into Fukuoka since its only around 1 hour Shinkansen ride away. I was looking into exploring Shikoku and Kyushu too for my first trip but public transport options seemed quite cumbersome with many stops for local buses or ferries so I skipped those plans. I remember looking specifically into Kumamoto or Nagasaki but I had not enough time and didn't want to spend every day commuting for hours. I would consider them for my 2nd or 3rd trip when I will be confident enough to rent a car.

>They are looking for the mythical foreigner group that will come in and integrate to their specific breed of autism.
*They are looking for the mythical foreigner group that will accept subhuman living standards but not engage in subhuman behaviour
They don't give a fuck about integration, japs don't want them to integrate and stay long term. They want them to work their productive years away and then get booted out never to return so they don't have to share any more benefits with them once they become a net negative.

Anyway the answer is to simply only import the high IQ white men currently being soft-genocided by their own origin countries but that's forbidden under global judeo-law so I guess it's another 20 years of kurd parking lot brawls for Japan until they figure it out.

Uh bro, which country do you think you're describing rn? Have you visited any other countries in Asia before coming to this conclusion? I don't see many elderly people getting booted from Japan actually.
Also, they don't want to import too many high status people for obvious reasons.

Calligraphy is fun and the language is pleasant to listen to.
I like how there's death penalty and police can help you.

>Uh bro, which country do you think you're describing rn?
Did you try thinking about what I said for a minute, or did you just jump instantly to 'Japan life always good!'
Japan quality of life, compared to general Asia, is indeed high. The average ethnic Japanese will expect a high standard of living, even the poorer ones. SoL means a few things, but the largest variance in SoL for individuals is income. To meet the expected SoL for a native Jap, they will demand at least an income of X.
Then, you import some guy from idk, Bangladesh. Bangladesh SoL? Dogshit. The expected, demanded SoL of the guy you imported? ALSO dogshit. The demanded income he needs to meet the dogshit SoL he is happy to settle for? FAR LESS THAN X.

So yes, the low-skill workers brought in on visas are selected specifically because they are willing to live in worse conditions, for worse pay, because even that is an upgrade to where they came from. The benefit to the employer is that they don't need to raise the wages of their workers. Just get some cheap foreigner instead, fuck paying a Jap a dignified income!
Low-skilled foreign labour imports are almost always desired for one reason: Wage Suppression. Capitalists fucking love immigration, not only do they get an infinite pool of scabs willing to do their work, but they also get to hold said scabs by the balls since their visa is entirely reliant on their job.

>I don't see many elderly-
Like I said, they send the low-wage temp workers home well before then.
>obvious reasons
Enlighten me

>>2880366
Thanks for telling us all you know nothing about how an imported low-skill labor shortage worker lives.
Have you ever seen 20 indian men living in a 3 bedroom house, with one guy sub-renting it (illegally) to the rest of them? Because I have. I know exactly how this whole song and dance works, and I know exactly how it undermines the lives of every native inhabitant of the country that engages in these imports.

It's not about wages. It's about social status. Japs would rather be an office wagey that gets paid shit than be a tradey that makes double or triple. The money doesn't mean anything in Asia

>It's not about wages. It's about social status. Japs would rather be an office wagey that
Anon, I hate to break it to you but the jobs which the low wage workers are filling are not 'tradies that make double or triple'. They are factory workers, not the electrician overcharging boomer nan on the electricals as she renovates her third investment property in the Australian housing bubble.

Anything wrong with using Klook to reserve train tickets? Price are the official ones as far as I can see. Unless they take a commission right before the payment.

>>2880384
It is possible to take a bus over from Honshu if you wanted to visit Shikoku. In some ways it is unique from the rest of Japan, but it's probably overhyped. For example, the book "Kafka on the Shore" by Murakami really does not resemble Takamatsu very much. Murakami just wanted the most Inaka (rural/remote) place he could think of to set the story.
You can take trains around the island itself. Getting into the mountains it may be beneficial to have a car. People do cycle around Shikoku quite a bit though.

I tried dumping in a /jp/ thread a while ago but my region got range banned for a week half way through. Hopefully don't suffer the same fate this time.

Day 1 (1 of 2)
>Land at the Osaka Airport. Get body searched at customs. Probably due to the country I was visiting previously. Strange welcome to Japan but okay.
>Get a sim card from a vending machine. Get information overloaded at the train station. Ask ChatGPT for guidance. GPT-sensei directs me to the self help kiosks. Buy my Suica Card. I'm a bonified tourist now.
>Riding the train. Hey that place looks cool.
>Check out a shopping center.
>Check out capsule toy shop. Come away with a Black Frost, a Pixie, and a sleeping Frieren. Was cool.
>Check out department store. Marvel at glorious Nippon refrigerator and toilet technology.
>Check out video game section. Find Yakuza. Find Gal Gun. Find promotional cabinets for Pragmata and Idol Master.
>Check out models section. Find Gundam. Find trains. Find Frame Arm Girls. Find Idolmas figurines. Nippon department stores are so much superior compared to the west. Are American department stores even trying?
>Feeling hungry. Get hamburg omurice at an omurice restraunt. Grab a Miruku Tii drink afterwards for 110 yen at a vending machine. Was good. Chill out on the roof of the shopping center.
>Check out a shine off the main gaijin path.
>Pay patronage to the local deities. See shrine maidens. Draw a fortune. Average Luck. Was neat.
>A neko hops onto my lap while taking a break. Warm it up for a while. Later on see it in the lap of another shrine visitor. The slut.
>On the way out, see a couple of honest to god danshi koukousei banchou and their nakama doing some sort of promotional stint. Shit was surreal.
>>
>>2880441
Day 1 (2 of 2)
>Find another shopping center.
>Eat an ichigo crepe. Drink a meron soda. Was good.
>Check out a book store. Find a Medalist promotional video. Find a hand crafted Dungeon Meshi synopsis board. Find a Spy X Family Anya grade 1 teaching book. Find a Holy Shit large amount of BL books.
>Go to a Taito Station. Watch Salarymen play Street Fighter. Watch a couple play Inital D. Watch JCs play Idolmas. Play crane games. Win a large package of pocky. Was fun.
>Visit a Surugaya in Den Den Town.
>Browse retro video game stuff on the first floor.
>Browse figurines on the second floor.
>Browse anime on the third floor.
>Browse R18 doujinshi on the fourth floor. Buy a stack of Comic LO books. The sales clerk isn't phased at my purchase. Welcome to Nippon I guess.
>Check into a business hotel for my first night. Marvel at glorious Nippon space efficiency. Still jetlagged so sleep was mediocre.
>>
>>2880442
Day 2 (1 of 2)
>Have hotel breakfast of eggs, fish, sausage, miso and other Nippon breakfast related things. Wasn't too bad.
>Head over to Nara Park. Buy deer crackers. Molest deer. Get molested by deer. Watch other people get molested by deer. Was great.
>Chill out on a park bench and view the unblossomed cherry trees. Too early in the season for them to have blossomed. Zannen deshita.
>Hike towards the great shrine at the back of the park. The path starts to feel tourist heavy (both Nipponese and the gaijin infestation). Find some remote spots at the back of the shrine that were a bit quieter. Was okay I guess.
>Have lunch at a sushi belt restraunt. Watch sushi go round and round. Stack up 11 plates and a 4000 yen bill. Shit was great.
>Stop at Kizugawa. Head into Rural Nippon to cleanse the touristy feel from Nara Park.
>Wander some neighborhoods. Wait for a train to pass at a rail crossing.
>Find a vending machine in the middle of nowhere. And another. And another. Start to appreciate the prolific nature of Nipponese vending machines. Enjoy a warm miruku kofee from one of them.
>Pass through a cemetery. Climb a mountain to the historical site of a castle long since gone.
>Find a public restroom nearby. Strikingly well maintained. Start to appreciate the prolific nature of Nipponese public restrooms.
>Enjoy the view from a nearby observation platform. See a nearby community center with sports facilities.
>The view of the city. Sun setting. Light wind blowing. Crows cawing. The whack of a tennis racket. The ping of a baseball bat. The sparse cheer of the players. The rail crossing in the distance. A couple JCs practicing the clarinet nearby. Shit was anime.
>>
>>2880443
Day 2 (2 of 2)
>Head back to the station and head over to Uji.
>Try to visit the Nintendo Museum. Tickets only sold online. Online tickets require a Nintendo account. Too much effort. Matakondo.
>Visit a nearby rural Bookoff. Shit was oka- Wait why is there an open access R18 section in this rural bookoff? Aren't these kind of things supposed to be squared away in some back corner? Tonikaku, buy a cute Fujisaka Lyric book to add to my collection.
>Feeling hungry so visit an absolute dive of a diner. Drop my spaghetti while trying to order and get offered the English menu. It has the gaijin tax on it. I order a fried chicken ramen in rich broth. Shit was...kinda bad but still edible. Not what I was expecting for ramen.
>There's no business hotels in Uji so I book one back in Osaka downtown and start making my way back.
>Walk past 3 love hotels and get offered guidance on soaplands/massage parlors twice before realizing that my hotel is right in the middle of Osaka's redlight district.
>Feet are tired and seriously have to piss so I decline the Nii-san's invitations.
>Despite the seedy location, the hotel is still quite reasonable. Once again I appreciate the glorious Nippon space efficiency. The walls were well soundproofed so sleep was good despite being in the middle of downtown.
>>
>>2880444
Day 3 (1 of 2)
>Hotel has no breakfast.
>Grab a croquet at a Family Mart. The breakfast of champions from the store of champions.
>Onwards noble rail steed to Kyoto.
>Check out the Arashima Bamboo Forest. was cool but holy shit the gaijin infestation is bad here.
>Find the garden property of some famous silent film actor or something. Sip some tea while enjoying the view of his gardens. Was okay.
>Head north to some nanchara nanchara shrine. It's starting to look like the shrine visit from yesterday.
>Way in a back find a path that trails along the mountain. See warning signs posted. Beware of Bears. Beware of Snakes. Beware of Bees. Beware of Rockslides. OK...
>Continue onward despite the warnings and find a remote clearing with a spectacular view of the city.
>Intrusive thoughts tell me that this would be a great outdoors sex location.
>Remind myself that I'm not into that kind of fetish so put a pin in that idea.
>It starts raining. The gods must be unhappy with my thoughts.
>Start feeling hungry again. Try an egg beef pork teriyaki burger from a Nippon McDonalds. The fries felt American but the burger was unique. Was interesting.
>Head into the city where it's not raining and chill at the river bank. This too is also infected with gaijin. Shit was not anime.
>Feet are starting to kill me so visit a seedy massage shop.
>Masseuse is not bad looking but has an ookii mune; a far cry from loli looking. Make small talk. Get Nihongo Jouzu'd. Get gaijin taxed for the kimochi option. Was fine I guess.
>>
>>2880445
Day 3 (2 of 2)
>Try a second attempt at ramen at a traditional ramen shop. This seems more like what one would expect of ramen. Finally_Some_Good_Fucking_Food.gif.
>Attempt to visit Nijou castle. Already closed for the day. Matakondo.
>Sun sets. Visit Yasaka shrine. Food stalls are being set up. Still infested by gaijin. Zannen deshita.
>Try a king crab stick from one of the food stalls. I'm not a seafood fan but was passable I guess.
>Decide I'm tired of business hotels so check into a bonifide ryoukan at the edge of the city.
>8 tatami mats of glorious space to relax in.
>Want to try the public bath. Find the bath yukata and sandals. Confirm public bath etiquette with GPT-Sensei. Hotel information website says the bath is empty.
>Public bath is indeed empty. Scrub the travel grime off. Soak my weary bones in the indoor section.
>Other Nipponese start to arrive. Engage in staring contest with the wall. Adopt thinking man's pose to maintain my personnel sense of modesty.
>Get out because I start to feel light headed due to the heat.
>Grab a miruku tee from the first floor vending machine. Relax in the lounge in the lobby watching the river go by while wearing my Nipponese bath yukata and my Nipponese bath sandals and sipping on my Nipponese miruku tee. Truly I have become the Nippon. Was great. Probably would feel more anime with a group of friends or family.
>Observe an ojiisan fall asleep in one of the chairs and take that as my queue to head back to my room as well.
>Sleep was good despite it being a floor futon. Probably due to soaking in the bath.
>>
>>2880446
Day 4 (1 of 2)
>Decide I want a morning bath so head back to the public baths. The staff just finished changing it so it's in pristine condition.
>Soak my weary bones in the outdoor section. Intrusive thoughts point out some good voyeuristic spots across the river for when the bath changes to female.
>Remind myself that I'm not into that kind of fetish so put a pin in that idea.
>Check out the nearby red bridge islands in the middle of the river. Apparently a famous spot from Hibike Euphonium. Neat.jpg.
>Head into town and start to notice other Hibike Euphonium posters and signs. Seems like a large part of the town was featured in it.
>Grab an onigiri, a custard bread and a one bite mixed sandwich set from Lawsons for breakfast. Scrumptious.
>Washed it all down with a vending machine Coca-Cola. Not much to say. It tastes like Coca-Cola.
>Start my pilgrimage to Kiyomizu-dera temple.
>HOLY SHIT there is a lot of people here (both Nipponese and the gaijin infestation).
>There's a stand showcasing old steel monk equipment that is giving people the opportunity to try lifting them.
>Attempt to lift the biggest staff in the middle. It doesn't budge. I am not the one.
>Marvel at the temple infrastructure needed to hold it up on the side of the mountain.
>Read up on the primeval forest behind the temple and how it's closed to the public. Probably for the best given the crowd.
>Appreciate the view of the city. Now I have a view of Kyoto from both the east side and the west side.
>Had a good time despite the large number of tourists.
>>
>>2880448
Day 4 (2 of 2)
>Decide I want beef steak for lunch so drop into a wagyu steak restaurant about half the size of an American hallway.
>See the wagyu beef option and the Kobe beef option beside that costing four times the price of the former.
>Do I really want to spend 5000 yen on 100 grams of beef? It comes in a gold colored bento box so sure why not.
>The meet was buttery, juicy, and delicious, but was it 5000 yen delicious? Debatable. Regardless, was good.
>Head over to Nijou Castle again. Now open except for the inner palace which is closed for remodel. Zannen deshita.
>Join the conga line for the outer palace tour. Appreciate the palace interior architecture and history of Nippon Daimyo and Shogun.
>A solid 6/10 experience, could have been better with less gaijin.
>Realize that I'm starting to slip on my schedule. Take the bullet train to Castle Town Hikone.
>Hikone is not like Kyoto. Everything is closed by 7:00.
>See the glowing white castle of Hikone in the distance while looking for a place to eat.
>Find an open Soba restaurant. Soba's good right?
>Soba is not good. At least cold soba isn't. Was bad. Probably one of the few Nippon foods that I disagree with.
>Check into my business hotel for the night. Notice that it's the same brand as back in Osaka. Guess it must be a franchise.
>The white castle piqued my interest so resolve to visit it tomorrow as I fall asleep.
>>
>>2880449
Day 5 (1 of 2)
>Start the day early. Standard business hotel breakfast.
>To the white castle.
>Moats, bridges, walls, elevation, gates, defensive chokepoints, a bitch'n keep. This is what castles are supposed to be like. Minimal gaijin tourists as well. Shit was great.
>Get a cool panoramic view of the city from the walls of the castle. I can see why it's called a castle town.
>Stroll the plum orchard in the back. They seem to blossom slightly earlier than the cherry trees. Not quite in full bloom. Zannen deshita.
>Head into town.
>See an Okonomiyaki shop. Okonomiyaki is good right?
>Okonomiyaki is great! A 10/10 would eat again experience.
>Let the chef cook it since I didn't have the confidence to use the table top grill but resolve to do so for myself next time.
>Decide to go lakeside.
>Why is there so much garbage here?
>Find a used Tenga. Decide not to touch it.
>Aren't Shiga people supposed to be big on preserving Lake Biwa? Read online and find that most of the tourist areas are on the west bank of the lake. Guess this area doesn't get as much love.
>>
>>2880450
Day 5 (2 of 2)
>Spot a small island in the middle of the lake.
>There's a shine on there isn't there.
>Look it up. Yep. There's a shine on there.
>Realize that I'm falling behind on my schedule so make my way back to the train station and head north towards Kanazawa.
>Transfer at Oomi-Shiotsu Station.
>There is literally nothing here. It's surreal how much nothing is in this place. I have never seem so much nothing in a place in all my travels.
>Feel the urge to explore all this nothing. Realize I would get to Kanazawa way too late if I did. Matakondo.
>Make it to Kanazawa.
>Check into an actual hotel. It's a bit more space than a business hotel. Albeit not much more.
>Lights fading so head into town in search of food.
>Try out Shogun Burger. Kinda reminds me of a 5 Guys but better. Very respectable meal and establishment.
>Sun's fully set but decide to go check out the Higashi Chaya district. It's on every tourist blog so figure it won't be worth visiting during the day.
>The streets are remarkably empty at night and the traditional street lamps lead to a cool ambiance. Was cool.
>Head back to the hotel for the night. Peruse the Comic LO books I bought on day one for a bit and call it a night.
>>
>>2880451
Day 6 (1 of 2)
>Not a business hotel so head to the nearby market for breakfast in the morning.
>Kanazawa is famous for their seafood or something and every stall has fresh fish and the likes.
>Not much of a breakfast seafood fan so decide to go against the grain and get konbini sushi and seafood onigiri for my breakfast.
>Become acutely aware of how much more waste sushi generates and that needs to be carried around. Still do so to maintain the social contract.
>Get sidetracked by a shrine on the way to Kanazawa Castle.
>It has a neat garden/lake area with various small bridges and pathways.
>Converse with the koi population for a short while.
>See a convey of JS out on an expedition. They remind me of platelets from Hataraku Saibou. Cute. Too young to be classified as loli though.
>Head across the bridge to visit Kanazawa Castle
>It has a nice garden but there's no keep. Where is the keep? And what's this huge box on site?
>Turns out the castle burned down twice in the past and efforts to restore it began only very recently.
>Disappointing, but at least the gardens were nice.
>Notice that sometime along the way I lost one of the chopsticks from breakfast that I was carrying with me.
>Forgive me great Nippon for I have broken the social contract and committed the cardinal sin of littering.
>Get over it and decide to visit a shrine known for torii gates.
>Notice a concerningly large number of JK and come to find the shrine is also heavily dedicated to love and matchmaking.
>I doubt the gods would be happy with me if I asked them for a loli so decide to head onwards into the city.
>Step into a curry shop and order some bonified Nipponese katsu curry. Quite enjoyable. The stew like consistency makes it stand out compared to typical western curry.
>Try to visit a Lashinbang but find it closed. You have failed me Google in saying that it is open today.
>Try to visit a few more stores but realize yet again I am slipping on my schedule.
>>
>>2880452
Day 6 (2 of 2)
>At this point I realize I didn't book nearly enough time to appreciate the number of areas I planned to visit.
>Cut my time short in Kanazawa and resign myself to spending no more than one day at each remaining stop on my trip.
>Arrive at Matsumoto station and admire the giant Godzirra statue on the overpass.
>Visit the local Bookoff to make up for missing the Lashinbang in Kanazawa.
>Damn. This place is stacked. I guess this Bookoff is called a Super Bazaar for a reason.
>It doesn't matter if you're /a/, /c/, /e/, /fa/, /g/, /h/, /k/, /lit/, /m/, /n/, /o/, /po/, /sp/, /tg/, /u/, /v/, or /vr/. This place has you covered.
>New and retro games, anime and manga of all genres and eras, card games, board games, figurines, mecha, mecha musume, trains, hentai, fashion, toys, musical instruments, cars, tech. The list goes on and on and on.
>There's even a drone academy flight field on the top floor.
>The freedom to pursue any interest, no matter how niche, to whatever ludicrous end it may take you; truely the epitome of Otaku'ism.
>No dedicated /l/ section but impulse buy a cute Misao. comic book from the /h/ section regardless.
>Definitely a highlight of the trip.
>Get accosted by a restaurant tout on the way to the hotel. Somewhat apprehensive but he's a Nippon so sure why not. It can't be a Nigerian scam right?
>Turns out it's just a group of daigakusei kids trying to cater to the gaijin crowd.
>The food is kinda meh and overpriced for what it is (hamburg on rice) but hey, they're social, eager, and speak limited but functional English.
>Tell them about my travels and adventures. They tell me about their ambitions and life in Japan.
>The cute waiter asks me what my favorite nippon word is. Draw a blank, but eventually stumble upon Ashita. Get Nihongo Jouzu'd for my efforts. Was good overall.
>Finally make my way to my hotel for the night.
>Spend the rest of the evening on /v/ in the Idolmas thread showing off the merch I saw at Bookoff.
>>
>>2880454
Day 7 (1 of 2)
>Briefly think of hitting the baths in the morning but decide against it since I know I have limited time.
>Strike out into the city and see the Black Castle in the distance.
>Admire a samurai outfit at the entrance of the castle.
>Grab a aloe vera and white grape drink from the vending machine before heading towards the keep. Shit was spectacular. Will have to try and find them when I get home.
>Watch a pair of staff-san dressed as a lord and lady offering photos to tourists as I finish my drink.
>Make my way towards the black castle. It's quite a sight to behold up close.
>Lots of history to take in, with the castle changing hands from many notable Nipponese historical figures and being pivotal in many historical battles.
>Lots of lore about gunpowder, rifles, and cannons as well. This seems to be one of the first castles where they were recognized for their strategic importance.
>The interior's cool as well with lots of small details like a hidden dark floor between the second and fourth floor and a tiny shrine placed up in the rafters at the top floor for lore reasons.
>In the dimness of the interior, I could see how tales of ninja and their stealth prowess came to be.
>Overall had a grand time at the castle. In terms of castles, probably tied for first with Hikone in my opinion.
>On the way out. See an exhibit showcasing the 50 or so surviving castles across Japan. Will have to visit more of them on my next visit.
>Take a wander over to some street famous for it's frog merch. Get greeted by a giant frog ninja statue.
>Seems like some small shop alley with trinkets and baubles for sale. Was kinda neat.
>Try a chocolate filled Taiyaki. Was quite good. Would probably treat myself to it regularly if I lived here.
>Chill out at the mini river. Not a lot of tourists here so quite nice.
>>
>chatgpt and /v/ on vacation
Grimdark but good you enjoyed bro
>>
>>2880455
Day 7 (2 of 2)
>Realize I need actual food so step into a rural diner.
>Order a pork katsu combo. Probably the least exciting meal of my trip but still good.
>My limited schedule drags me back to the station.
>Do a double take as I walk past a pudding vending machine, a gyoza vending machine and a cheese cake vending machine. Truly there is a vending machine for everything in Japan.
>Get off the train at Kofu; the last stop before Tokyo.
>Get on a bus to my hotel. Realize it's the west bound variant instead of the eastbound one. Ah well this takes me near a local Onsen and I didn't get to bathe this morning.
>Once again enamored by how rural the rural parts of Nippon feel.
>Onsen is closed for today and tomorrow due to plumbing problems. Zannen deshita. I guess it wasn't meant to be.
>Decide to visit a local shrine instead. Not a soul in site; well off the touristy path. Almost feel bad defiling the place with my presence.
>See some extremely complicated proofs posited on wooden plaques above the Chozuya. Seeems like this shrine is dedicated towards academia.
>No longer in academia so no need to pray here. Matakondo.
>Sun is starting to set so take the right bus this time and hop into a local diner on the way to the hotel.
>Order an Oyakodon (The bowl, not the threesome option from a soapland) and some teriyaki egg rolls.
>Drop by the toilet before my food arrives and am greeted with the smallest restroom I have seen in my life.
>I know that some Japanese public restroom can make airplane restrooms feel spacious but this one literally has a 14" gap to get to the urinal.
>Truly Nipponese space efficiency is on another level compared to the rest of the world.
>The food was good although the raw egg was a bit of an experience. Regardless, was tasty.
>Check in to my business hotel for the night and reflect on my journey as well as the fact that I will be heading home in 2 days.
>Will have to book more time next time I come here.
>>
>>2880457
Day 8 (1 of 2)
>Melon Pan and Ham and Egg sandwich for breakfast.
>While Kofu castle is also keepless, the grounds with all the walls and elevation differences was cool regardless. A nice view of the city at the top and sometimes Mt. Fuji can be seen on clear days.
>Today was not a clear day. Zannen deshita.
>Weigh my options and decide I want more time in Tokyo than in Kofu. So make my way to the station.
>Feel like I didn't give Kofu enough time. Matakondo.
>Land at Shinjuku Station.
>Get greeted by a Re:Zero banner of Rom, Rem, and Emiliya promoting a pachinko parlor.
>Perhaps if Vegas started catering towards weebs they might be able to revive their failing city.
>Strange thought, but okay.
>See a 4 story McDonalds in a tiny triangular plot of land.
>Feeling hungry so pop into a sushi belt restaurant. This place is clearly a tourist trap but I have yen to burn so ma ii ka.
>Rack up 8 plates this time but a bill twice as expensive as the previous place.
>Browse various stores and shopping malls. Kinda a blur in my memories here, but do recall stumbling across a Puyo Puyo pop up store along my travels. Was neat.
>>
>>2880459
Day 9 (1 of 2)
>Dawn of the final day.
>Have a convenience store breakfast for one last time (Chicken Katsu Sandwich, Taiyaki, Onigiri and Miruku Tii).
>Wasn't quite enough so grab a few donuts from Mr. Donut shortly after. They're better than the West somehow.
>Realize that I will be going through western customs within 24 hours with several cultured books about young girls on my person.
>Start to panic and begin looking for places I can offload these dangerous contraband.
>Try a Melon Books in Akihabara.
>Browse a copy of Prototype Lolita before working up the courage to ask the front desk if they buy used books.
>"Dame desu". Makes sense since it seems like a place for newer releases.
>Read up of a Mandrake Comics and a heavy Otaku presence in Nakano.
>Make my way over there and am met with a metaphorical garbage pile; partially in a good way and partially in a bad way.
>Feels like a place where you go to find retro stuff or fads that have long since gone out of style.
>Don't find much quality content but do find a set of vintage Aki Uchiyama comics. Not quite Hideo Azuma level of retro, but pretty darn close.
>Seems like each Mandrake Book store is different with each offering different services. These ones don't seem to offer buy back counters.
>Drop by a Takoyaki stall on the way back to the station.
>They say that burning your mouth while eating takoyaki is part of the experience.
>Burn my mouth while eating the takoyaki.
>Enjoyed it despite the high temperature.
>>
>>2880460
Day 9 (2 of 2)
>Check out Shibuya. Get lost in the overpasses and underpasses. This place requires multidimensional navigation. Google maps can't save you here despite their best efforts.
>See the Shibuya Scramble. Marvel at how so many people can coexist in such a condensed area.
>Chart a course to a local book store using Google Maps. Find a literal hole in the ground. The place feels like a damp dark cave.
>Finally find a place dedicated to /l/; an entire wall filled with Comic LO monthly editions dating back to early 2000s.
>Refrain from impulse buying the whole wall and remind myself that I will be traveling through western customs in 24 hours.
>Ask the store clerk if they buy used books here.
>"Dame desu". Struck out again
>Read of another Mandrake Comics in Akihabara. This one seems to have dedicated rebuy counters on the first floor.
>They do, but the cute sales clerk informs me that there's an hour long wait to service.
>Do some quick Googling and realize I won't make my flight if I wait.
>"Jikan ja nai desu"
>Wish I had went to this store first.
>Weigh my options.
>Eventually decide to not risk customs and discard my books in a store restroom.
>Forgive me great Nippon for I have broken the social contract and committed the cardinal sin of littering.
>Get over it and make my way to the airport.
>Get questioned in the waiting room regarding which flight I came to Japan on. Kinda strange but okay. Was probably due to the country I was visiting previously.
>Back across the pond customs waves me through without so much as a glance my direction.
>fml. Should have risked running the books.

Overall a 10/10 experience and am looking to visit again next year.

QRD:
Takamatsu has Udon, a ferry to Megi Island, an island where Momotaro fought ogres.
Tokushima has Naruto whirlpools, vine bridges nearby. Cool city center imo. Their Awa Odori festival is worth it if you can time your trip for it.
Matsuyama has very highly regarded onsen.
Kochi is the most remote and pretty of them all IMO. You can eat whale there.

NTA but basically the same question. I already went to Osaka 3 years ago and did your list, other than the Minoh Falls which I’ll do this time.
What are some daytrips that are not Kobe, Kyoto, Himeji and Nara that I already did? Speaking of Nara, everyone goes to the deer park and temple grounds for obvious reasons, but I feel like there should be some hidden gems in that prefecture. Thinking of visiting Imaicho, seems very comfy and photogenic.
Any hidden gems?
I'll probably do Koya, though I expect it to be over-touristy, and I'm kinda fed up with Buddhist temples, but whatever.

Not that anon, but did a year in language school in 2024.
Unless you are really good at sticking to self study, doing a couple hours per day, the school is of course a winner by far. I mean its 5 days X 4 hours a week, for 40 weeks of that year. The school I went to at least, felt like the curriculum was well designed too.
So it's great from a simple study time/quality study perspective. But by far the biggest potential (because you need to put in the effort still) benefit is that you are in Japan while learning it, so it's reinforcing everything while you learn and you can easily access situations to need to use it, greatly increasing acquisition.

I'm an autist who sucks at holding a conversation in English, let alone Japanese, and even I progressed a lot, from essentially 0 to passing N3 in that year. That's not a brag as it's not super hard and I know many people do better. But I didn't conversate nearly as much as I could and should have, so if you put in the hard yards, the awkward situations and going out of your way to practice, you can get 5+ years of self study worth done in 1 year.

>>
>>2880558
Thanks for sharing your experience, were you working part time while studying or did you have enough money saved up to study for the year?
>>
>>2880562
Fucking g*rms and their 500€ bills. Serves them right. I always have to deal waiting in line in the supermarket in touristy areas when thjese FAGGOTS churn out a 500€ bill to the cashier that freaks out, just to pay 25€ of groceries.
They can go fuck themselves.
>>
>>2880570
Probably being frugal. If I only had 15k in savings, I'd stay in hostels too
>>
>>2880576
I had saved up. Combine that with yen being weak and Japan being a cheap place to live, the money went far.
But a couple friends I made at the school worked part time. You are allowed to do up to 24 hours a week, but they didn't need to do that much.
It's a trade off, you lose time socialising elsewhere and restrict freedom of travelling when you want, but 1 friend also found that job to really really help his Japanese acquisition as he had some good Japanese coworkers.
Some people were working the full amount (probably more desu) and it clearly affected their school time and left them with no free time. If you need to work a bunch to stay there, I'd say delay another year to save instead.
So overall, if you can save so that you don't NEED to work, but then find a part time job with like 1 shift a week, that'd be best of both worlds I'd say. Also would mean you can try and find a good position, not just ANY job.

I'll echo what the other guy said. do not make the mistake of a lot of others who go to language school with a tourist or poor N5 level. it is a complete waste of money and time. the classes are fully in japanes and it's very awkward when you don't understand the teacher saying "please sit down" or "open your book" etc. I think language school really benefits those who are at least N4+ and are willing to self study - these people who pay attention in class and study outside of class, in addition to all the immerse you get living in the country, excel like a rocket in the language

>>
>>2880554
If I went back to Osaka I'd probably spend most of my time in the areas I listed. But here's a few I can think of.
Iga is about an hour away and has a Ninja museum which is cool if you are into that.
Japan's baseball season is in full swing, Koshien Stadium is the site of their big national high school tournament and the Hanshin Tigers which has the loudest fan base. Pretty fun, good food and beer to be had.
The Daisen Kofun is the equivalent of the Great Pyramids in Japan. Ancient massive tombs of emperors litter the South of Osaka. This is the biggest one.
The locals seem to favor tourism around the Umeda station. I havent spent a lot of time there the Umeda Sky Building is near there. Speaking of tall buildings, the Abeno Harukas has an elevator to the top. Pretty great view of the city from up there. I recommend it.
The Osaka History museum is near Osaka Castle IIRC, I found it interesting. There's also an Art museum near the Zoo. Tennoji temple is neat. There's a Mega Don Quijote near there.

Oh right, forgot about tall buildings, might be nice on the evening for some night photography, which I'm into. I'll check the ones you suggested, thanks. Is there a building in Osaka like the Mori Tower in Roppongi that has an open deck? This was my favorite one, not being behind a glass.
Being up there on the helipad I felt like I was the John motherfucking McLane in Nakatomi plaza.

Can't really justify doing the south. I never went to Kumamoto in Kyushu either. If I went a third time I might do the south of both islands via ferry.

>What are some daytrips
arima onsen is just over an hour on a bus from umeda, nice lil onsen town
hikone is a nice town with a castle that can be visited in about 1 1/2 hours on an express train from umeda iirc
uji, technically apart of kyoto i think but its a nice area. has the temple on one of the coins, also famous for green tea
you can go to the other parts of nara further out from the park such as horyuji (temple with the oldest wooden buildings in the world) or the heijo palace park site where there are some restorations museums and archaeology of nara back to when it was the capital of japan also the spot where abe was assassinated a few years ago is right outside the train station there
i also did a daytrip to amanohashidate from osaka which is one of the original three views of japan but it was kinda boring and took a few hours to get there so not really worth it

Thanks anon. I might add Hikone, I couldn't do it last time I was in kyoto. Might also add the Chibuku-shima on Lake Biwa, I guess both will keep me busy for a full day. I'll look into Uji and southern Nara.
Also for something completely different, I never did Kobe, nor am I particularly interested in the city, but it definitely has some Honk-Kongesque kinoviews being squeezed between the sea and mountains. Doing one of the two ropeways (there's also a 3rd one but accessible from the other side of the mountain range) is the obvious thing to do, but surely there's some good hidden gem hiking trail hidden in there? Maybe going from one ropeway to the other?

Huh? As that other anon, I literally did not say that. I even said I went with near 0 level knowledge. So did the friends I made.
It went very well for us, even from the beginning.
Classes are essentially all in Japanese, but they had just a small amount of English to help in the level 0 class, get us on our feet and really going. As long as you aren't literally retarded, it's fine to start from basically 0.

Would Shikoku be worth it if touring it by train? Meaning I'll stay alongside the coastline. I imagine accessing the inner mountains without renting a car is a bit nightmarish, as it always is when it comes to mountains.
I already did the Shimamani Kaido, and definitely would be up for something similar for a day or two, alongside a coastal area. As long as there's not too much traffic/there are enough cycle lines.

Just as a fun thought exercise, I added up how long it would take to do that assuming you wanted to navigate the entire coastline of Shikoku, and it came out to 18 hours. I don't know if anyone has ever done this on purpose.
That said there is an interior train line called the Dosan line that cuts through the middle of the island and through the mountains, so you could get that number down.

Reminder any time you talk shit about Saizeriya's food, you are talking shit about imported European food products, especially if you are a Spanish tourist in Japan. The Japanese are actually getting pissed over Spain not being to get their shit together on African swine fever, that they are demanding Saizeriya immediately switch to Portuguese pork.

>Saizeriya temporarily suspended the sale of menus using raw ham. The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), a livestock epidemic, has been confirmed in Spain, and the import of pork and processed products from the country has stopped. We are considering switching production areas, but the reopening date is undecided at this time.

>Portugal is currently free from African Swine Fever (ASF), having successfully eradicated the disease in the early 1990s after it was endemic from 1960 to the mid-1990s. The country maintains strict veterinary surveillance and is recognized for its proactive control measures following major outbreaks in 1957 and 1960

what this anon is failing to understand is that he went to a scammy language school. a good school will unilaterally demand that their students are at N5-N4 level and have 6mo's of documented japanese study abroad(either through JLPT score or proven class attendance)

the schools like the one you went to are applying that requirement only to brownoids. they're typically full of nepalese, jeets, and westerners with a few chinese and viet's. everyone but the westerners has attended japanese classes for 6mo's - they don't apply this rule to westerners because they know we can pay and want the money.

go to a good school that costs more and has a majority of Asian(NOT JEET/NEPALI/BANGLADESHI) students, they will probably try to make sure you're at N5/N4 before.

but yeah everything else you said about japan sucking for foreigners is kinda spot-on. basically if you're sensitive to sticking out or being scrutinized it's gonna suck for you. won't apply if you're low-inhib for any reason. personally, I cope with it by being a chronic drunk.
>>
>>2880959
there's no good schools retard. you can't learn a foreign language in a school. it's categorically retarded
>>
>>2880960
true, a language school should basically just be a way to get boots on the ground and be shuttled into university. that's what the schools i'm talking about do, they help chinese and vietnamese people pass the uni entrance exams and bump them up to N2-N1 through rote-learning.

you basically have to do the actual language learning on your own, but the school will help by giving you a place to drill for 6h/day and sponsoring your visa so you can prepare for uni entrance onshore. on the other hand, the scam schools are visa-farms for low-skill work and don't give you the required language practice or a good environment to do it in.

Did you guys know that you can order Matsuya's tonjiru (pork and vegetable soup) as a single Item?

When you are on your way home from drinking and get that "Man, I really want some ramen" craving, just hold back that desire for ramen, and instead, order a side of Matsuya's tonjiru for 240 Yen, which is heartily loaded with ingredients and plenty of vegetables, so you will feel a lot less guilty the next morning.

Still torn between taking an hotel near Dotonbori, or near the central train station. One one hand I'll mostly do daytrips from Osaka, so the train station makes more sense, on the other hand being near the cool districts will make me go out to do night photography.
The solution is to have Godzilla destroy everything so they rebuild the station exactly where it should be.
>>
>>2880993
No such thing, literally just read more lmao. This means comprehensible input btw, whitenoising for 1000 hours is just as much a waste of time as 1000 hours of Duolingo or lessons or whatever. If you aren't comprehending something, think about what the obstacle is and address it on a case by case basis.
>erm that won't let you speak more doe
Use your brain and have more comprehensible conversations then. Dumbass.
If you're just picking a language school for the visa then do JET/teach English instead. Get a stipend to stay in the country instead of paying out the nose for the privledge. Not like those have any standards either, nor are they good pay, but the stipend at least offsets the cost a bit for your desperate ass.
>>
>>2881011
>This means comprehensible input btw, whitenoising for 1000 hours is just as much a waste of time as 1000 hours of Duolingo or lessons or whatever.
All input is a collection of sentences. Yes, certain content repeats the same words and sticks to a certain domain of words, but it is RNG if a given sentence is i+1 comprehensible or not. Nothing is completely incomprehensible as long as you know the basics, especially if there is a corresponding visual component
By the same logic a richfag sitting in a language school is better off hypothetically than teaching english with that time, especially with how shit the yen. I taught English for a couple of weeks and quit, the psychological toil is too much. If it was a 15 hr a week job OK I guess

Just make sure you avoid rush hour when planning.
>>
>>2880999
I remember Sukajans (kinda like Ryan Gosling's scorpion jacket) were big when I was there. Ueno station has lots of little stalls IIRC.
The next 3 are all near each other:
Shibuya has the scramble and lots of restaurants/shops.
Omotesando/Harajuku is the fashion district of Tokyo. Omotesando has the high end designers, Harajuku has the more quirky stuff.
Shinjuku has Piss Alley and Golden Gai for eating and drinking. Go into a bar in the Red Light distrcit with a foreign tout if you like getting roofied and robbed.
>>
>>2881008
Do Dotonbori, if the price is roughly the same – there's no "central" station in Osaka, and no real advantage to being near it since it's all so spread out anyway compared to Tokyo. Plus, having a place next to the nightclub district makes pulling easier.
>>
>>2881008
>>2881030
this anon has it right, stay near namba station, its about a 5ish minute walk to dotonbori, so you get the best of both being near the train and walking close to cool stuff

Frankly sounds like you just had a bad experience at a school, that was probably mostly your fault, and now blame the schools for it.
Reminds me of the guy who was in my level 0 class, and turns out he had been there for 2 semesters before the rest of us. Blaming the school for his inability to actually try and learn. Still basically refusing to try Japanese pronunciation of most things.
>the shit said in class is an arbitrary subset of language that's practically self-contained.
Well it's more like 'Textbook Japanese'. So no it's not perfect, at the same time though, designing a class around an ever evolving 'on the street' usage is only going to be more out of touch as time goes on than starting from book Japanese. Given all the casual/slang does come from real Japanese that is the best starting point.
It's kind of like the saying "Gotta know the rules to break them". It works much better to learn proper Japanese in class and then practice with people for 'real' Japanese.
>schoolcels shit their pants whenever a native has a real conversation.
The same as (less than) a self educated person. The only getting around that is talking to people, which literally everyone always suggests to do as much as possible while at the school.

>>2880993
While you should mostly ignore the above 'schools are shit' retard, I do agree with his point about avoiding schools with jeets.
Though I'd also say the same for the ones with lots of chinese unless your Kanji knowledge is very high, I have heard a lot of people say they start with much higher kanji expectations in schools that are largely chinese students. They also are often the N2-Uni factories the other anon mentions, where they just cram in a test passing style, not for real language use.
There is a Japanese website that literally shows you school demographics. I went with Kudan because it had a real big mix, but high european numbers. Fewer undesirable jeet types, not too many chinks, not too many americans.

Can't fully remember how all the filtering works. But at worst you can click into the individual schools for whatever area of the country you want and it tells you the demographics.
Seems Kudan has changed a little, for the worse, unfortunately. But is still a mix of people.

Because of their historical isolation and traumatic colonisation as an effective American puppet state, the Japanese have an amazing cultural sensitivity that gives them a strong introspection about their own life and culture, not unlike the kind of razor-sharp introspection British authors like Tolkien possessed in the aftermath of World War 1. This leads to a variety of high quality Japanese art in many mediums.
Their architecture and geography is also absolutely beautiful.

Literally all you need is:

"Sumimasen" = Please/Excuse me/Sorry
>when you're passing someone in a tight space or flagging down a waiter

"Arigato" = "Thank you"

"Ee-eh" = No

"Hai" = Yes

Beyond that memorize a small handful of kanji for things like:
>toilet
>restaurant
>platform (as in train)
>the numbers
>entrance
>exit
>man/woman (for onsens and bathrooms mostly)

Chances are you'll not actually converse with many Japanese people on vacation anyways. Most people I talked to were shopkeepers who spoke good enough English and Philippina/Malay hotel staff who were basically fluent. There was only one restaurant I went to where nobody spoke any English and all it took was an extra few seconds for the waiter to tell me they were out of the thing I ordered so I changed my order just by grug pointing.

Don't cold approach someone who isn't a paid employee of wherever you are without saying "Eigo oh hanas?" first in a polite tone of voice and you'll have no problems with locals.

Hate to break it to you Timmy but every working adult here is already working a full time job and studying in their spare time. Dancing monkey jobs are barely work at all, so if that exhausts you too much to study and socialize to practice after work you are too retarded to learn a second language anyways. By all means pay 20k USD a year to be there instead of getting ~25k USD to stay there and study anyways.

If you aren't a moron you have a masters degree and N1 anyways and just get a real job for an American company in Japan or remote work over there for American dollars. This product is approved as a food for persons with medical conditions and is intended to provide water and electrolytes in order to maintain proper water and electrolyte balance in persons with mild-to-moderate dehydration. OS-1 can be used to prevent worsening of and aid in recovery from dehydration caused by the following conditions:

- Diarrhea, vomiting, or fever associated with infectious enteritis or the common cold

- Insufficient oral intake in elderly persons

- Excessive perspiration

- Heatstroke associated with dehydration

OS-1 and OS-1 Jelly are sold in the following places: Chain drug stores, Pharmacies, Hospitals (convenience stores or vending machines within the hospital grounds), and the OS-1 online sales site of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, Inc.

*While OS-1 products are sold in convenience stores inside pharmacies and hospitals, they are not sold in standard convenience stores.

Sounds pretty awesome, I've always wanted to be in an observation tower during a thunderstorm.
But I gotta say, you should still consider Umeda. It's worth it for the cool glass wall elevator you take up, plus the glass wall escalator tunnel between towers to go up the last few levels. Cool if you like the experience of interesting/slightly spooky things at heights.

Entered a random Izakaya with my GF on a second floor just outside that famous restaurants lane in Kyoto, it was super late and the few people that were in there just stopped to look at us like in a movie. Owner/server reluctantly gave us a table and was just chain smoking the whole time, also while taking our order and bringing the food. He kept on watching us then I think he overheard us speaking Italian because at some point he approached us and started to talk in the most broken English about Italian football in the 80s, every reply was useless because he couldn't understand but he just kept on talking while we were eating. Food was ok nothing special but it was cheap and so was the beer.

I doubt you'll have beautiful scenery. You'll get trees, more trees and even more trees. That's the problem with those low altitude trails.
I looked into it a while ago, and deemeed it not worth it if you want vistas.
>>
My problem with these small izakaya's, with the huge experience of one night, is that they're either packed full with some japanese friend group (too assburger to squeeze in next to them alone) or completely empty (too assburger to go in alone).
>>
>>2881830
Yeah I've never been to an izakaya alone. I think mostly with coworkers. You could try to wrangle some dudes from a hostel to go. People are usually down for stuff like this. There's also plenty of places to drink and eat by yourself in Japan. Coco Ichibanya being my favorite to eat at. But if you wanna drink too, Hub is pretty foreigner friendly but kinda British themed. You could also eat at a restaurant and then find a bar that isn't a hostess or "snack" bar (also a hostess bar).

Hopefully, you will not catch the flu again but if you do, you should ask your doctor to immediately prescribe baloxavir marboxil within 48 hours aka Xofluza. Xofluza has less reported side effects than Tamiflu and only requires a single dose, while the average regimen for Tamiflu is a 5 day course. If you are in Japan and catch the flu, I urge you to quickly get a Japanese doctor to prescribe you Xofluza in order to save your Japanese vacation unless you want to waste 5 to 7 days for your immune system to fight off the flu, without any help from medicine.

I had the comfiest time in Imaicho today. I thought I would just be there for an hour or two and that would be it, bit it was so comfy strolling those edo streets basically ALONE. I swear we where maybe 15 people wandering the streets, 14 being comfy niponese.obaasans and ojiisans visiting. Zero fucking slutty taiwanchink instagram whore. The best part is people actually live there. It's not tourist trap boutiques. And even when there's a boutique or a restaurant, you basically wouldn't know it from the facade. It's not in-your-face like elsewhere.
Then I went at the south-east viewpoint of the Itami airport. It was absolute Kino, you are like 50m away from the beginning of the runway, and the planes basically fly 100m over your head when landing. It's fucking incredible, you wonder how they even allow us to be there. I've made absolute kinoshots with my camera, will post some after they go through Lightroom when I come back.
One of my best days in a while. Again, zero taichinks make the whole thing so much more enjoyable. They even where at the Akashi bridge yesterday, like, fucking why, why are you even there. Just stay in Chinktonburi for fucks sake.

I don't care, arr rook same. Sorry if it breaks your beliefs, but math is math.

Booked 2 nights in Takamatsu, and intend to book 2 nights in Matsuyama, but I feel I should actually add more in Takamatsu. Feels like there's quite a few things to do, and it offers easy access to other areas. And it has enough kino viewpoints for me to /p/ sunsets for quite a few days. Bro you just described the problem with rainy season, not a hidden benefit.
I've never seen someone who 'likes' high humidity summers, plenty of people that say they "aren't that bad", because they come from places that also have 'em, but even they put up with them more than anything.

Well fuck you JR West for not accepting my Visa card nor my Mastercard. Wtf do you want, a fucking Burger Express card that doesn't work anywhere that matters?
There goes my plan to get the Setouchi area pass and use it to go to Matsuyama-Hiroshima-back to Osaka and continue using it for daytrips.
Found a cheap alternate route, hoping on Shadoshima from Takamatsu, and then there's a 2000 JPY ferry to Kobe. Can't beat that. Gotta find an hotel for a night or two starting from tomorrow, and find shit to do on that island.
Not having set plans have its perks, downsides too, but it leads to discoveries.

Just did StreetFesta in Osaka today
>Saw a couple people that had brought their children along with them in cosplay

>Saw one married couple with two kids all cosplaying unrelated characters, mother was Agnes Tachyon and her daughter was Hachikuji
>In the cosplay parade, woman cosplaying Kiss Shot with her daughter dressed as Shinobu (white sundress/pink ribbon type)
>Later in the day see some different father (not cosplaying) with his daughter cosplaying Hachikuji
Am I crazy for finding this weird? Like, monogatari is brazenly and unapologetically a series with a ton of lolicon shit, to the point it's basically a running gag/personality trait that Araragi can't keep himself from manhandling them. And you're just going to dress your daughter up like that? Has you kid read the LNs, or watched the anime? Do they *know* how these characters get treated? Or did the parents just find some reason/excuse to dress them up, who knows.
Maybe I'm overthinking it but like there's a difference between some 9 year old dressed as a Precure and as fucking Shinobu.
>>
>>2882362

There's no way they didn't know exactly what the character was, these were otaku parents.
>>
>>2882362

Yes anon, that's not my concern
It's putting your kid in the costume of a loliconbait character and taking them to a public event full of old sweaty otaku that just seems strange to me.
Even if the parent, and kid, and you and I can all seperate it, it's Japan so you know at least a handful of people out there that day were 'Junior Idol' type niggers
Anyway I took photos of the two adults I saw doing Hachikujis later so I'm happy with the day

>He thinks oil prices will resolve themselves after the strait issue is resolved.
>If it's resolved in the first place.
Yeah, no. You're looking at catastrophic levels of destruction. Each additional day is a disaster in the cooking. We're already past the red line anyway, hence why I booked my flight at the last minute. You won't see normal ticket prices for 2 years at least. And that's if Xi the pooh doesn't do the funny in a year or two anyway. Buy your RAM and RTX5070Ti right now.
If the strait opens right now this very second, it will take at least 3 months for the first batch of oil to be delivered. And even there, strategic reserves will have to be resupplied first, and it will take months. On top of countries extending their reserves to prevent another similar situation in the future, or creating reserves for the countries that don't have them (yet).
How the world is putting blinkers on the entire situation is beyond me. Heck, zapping nip TV channels, I don't even see any news about this. I bet 3/4 of the country don't know how bad the situation will be for them, even with their abundant strategic reserves.
Not my problem, my oil stonks are printing money. My S&P500 shorts not so much so far, but into the wall it will go, I'm patient and I actually can be solvent while the market stays irrational contrarily to the saying.

>>

Don't know your budget or interests. But you can try to save on hotels by looking into capsule/business hotels/ or hostels. The catch is the first 2 can be noisy around weekends especially with drunk salarymen snoring loudly. Hostels can be similar too, and you'll have to/get to interact with other foreigners.
Trains are going to be the most economical way to get around. Taxis are a ripoff in most cases. Depending on the city, you could look into renting a bike. Though some cities can be strict about parking like Kyoto. And you'll definitely want to lock it whenever you leave it.
If a foreigner approaches you to visit a bar, you will get scammed if you go there.
IDK what else, Japanese are generally pretty chill to talk to in bar settings, especially if you know the language. The exception might be ones who are experiencing tourist fatigue in big cities like Tokyo.
Conbini's are a good source for cheap food and booze in a pinch. It's legal to drink outside, though not the classiest thing to do.

I read a couple of articles by Ran Oishi and it appears both goth girls and lolita girls in Japan enjoy tea parties, which can be held at any venue. This is bad news for those searching for Japanese goths because there does not seem to be any specific bar or restaurant for goths. Instead, the goths pick and choose any convenient venue to host their tea parties once or twice a month.

My plan is to get the rail pass for my entire time, its pricey but I think well worth it. Im spending most of my spare time learning the language so I can go to less crowded places that dont cater to foreigners that hard. Since ill be there for over a month im going to save a good chunk of money so I dont have to panic near the end of the trip budget wise. Food, drinking and things to do im not too worried about since I can just wander about and hopefully be able to read things and talk to locals if needs be, trying to find the right hotels and hostels to stay at seems to just be a matter of asking around, I've slammed it across south east Asia before so I dont mind capsules or shittier hostels but also wouldn't mind staying somewhere nice from time to time. Good to know about foreigners approaching getting you scammed at bars

I see no reason there would be any issue here. They actually have a functioning site (miracle for Japan), good english support built into the site, and sky tent is a popular brand. Plus car camping is relatively popular in Japan so the service existing absolutely makes sense. All in all it gives off a good image.

Considered doing similar in Hokkaido September 2023. But ended up just renting a regular car and taking a hiking tent over with us.
We camped 4 nights, spent 3 in car with seats flat (at random michi no ekis, too tired to find camping place), 2 in tiny camp cabin in shiretoko.
This seems better priced than anything I saw when planning that trip, but still looking at easy 10k+ more per day than just a regular car.
So then that 10k saving is balanced against either having/renting a tent, how much that tent would cost to rent, and whether you want to deal with setting up a tent.
So overall I think this car camp seems pretty good for simplicity's sake if you don't already have a tent you could take.
>>
How bad is the humidity this time of year in japan? I'm from a dry and hot climate so I have no idea how bad it is. On paper 30c sounds pretty damn nice right now.
>>
>>2883083
Thanks for instilling some confidence in this site for me, not that I didn't trust it, but it's new enough to not have many reviews yet.

Yeah, I don't hate the pricing considering I'm comparing this to the cost of renting a car + paying for a hotel each night. While I probably could sleep in a regular car, this may turn out to be a 7-10 day side trip and I don't think I want to subject myself to that for that long. I also don't camp very often, so the thought of having to setup and tear town a rental tent each day was enough to consider something like like a campervan. I felt like this was a nice middle ground.
>>
>>2883070
3 more weeks
>>
I agree with you, it seems like a really great middle ground, perfect given you don't wanna deal with a regular tent.
If you do go with them, come back here and tell us how it was, I'd be keen to hear.
Good luck with the planning and have fun. My 10 day road trip across hokkaido was absolutely incredible, perhaps my favourite section of Japan, even across several trips.

Since Japanese water is soft, detergent lathers well even without using hot water. Also, because people bathe every day, they use the warm bathwater from the previous day for laundry. As a result, Japanese people don’t feel the need for a washing machine that uses hot water.

In Japanese households, when leftover bathwater is to be used the next day, people cover the bathtub. This prevents mold from forming due to moisture and keeps the water temperature at around 20 degrees Celsius the following morning. Of course, using the hot bathwater for laundry on the same day is the best option.

Nigger behavior. I've been to 50+ countries and have never been denied a cut. Japs want to eat their cake and have it too. If the country wants to close their borders and cut off tourism, that's totally within their right (and would be understandable). Refusing service for something this simple is unacceptable.
>>2883402
>Here's a picture. Trust you, bro.
Problem solved
>>
>>2883409
The nigger behaviour is going to a foreign country and being unable to communicate relevant information and concepts or comprehend and accept terms of service.
>>
95% of japanese guys have the same haircut so I don't wonder why some barbers panic seeing a foreigner. Still shitty behavior.
>>
>>2883402
>Going to a barbershop is one place where you absolutely need crystal clear communication because you're not gluing back the hair together.
>Skill issue, do your reps.
Dumb fuck stop making excuses for them being cunts, not hard to show them a photo of a hair style or using a translation app how much more clear can you be? oh wait you cant even get to that part as they cross their hands saying closed which means to fuck off.
>>2883403
I don't know about not blaming them, i was giving them a pass the last couple months but now fuck them they are just being passive aggressive cunts. I speak in basic Japanese to them be polite and it seems to set them off more as in the past they were more receptive after you spoke some Japanese to them, honestly better of just going full gaijin in English at them
>>
2 weeks is way too short of a time. Fuck. Less than a week left and so much to do and see. And everything is so cheap too.

Next year I'll be staying for a month at least I swear.

>>2883414
>Dumb fuck stop making excuses for them being cunts,
Can you not be a nigger and learn 500 useful phrases for travel?
If not it's ok, I'm sure you'll find someone to scam you blind, maybe if you're lucky and particularly charismatic you'll end up in a burmese scam site being electrocuted by nigerians ordered by Chinese for failing to meet your google play card quotas.
>or using a translation app how much more clear can you be?
>fat autismo pulling up nonsense hallucinated by chatGPT or google translate.

lmao there are even more hawker maids than in Akiba. Denden Town really feels miserable. Sorry but it had to be said. There's no Amiami, the Koto shop is shit, the Surugayas are shit, the Lashinbang is shit, the Mandarake is barely acceptable, the Animate is shit but they are always shit anyway. Didn't bother with the Melonbook and Jungle. Thank god Cospa never disappoints.
And the worst part is how it's 120% chinks. At least Akiba and Nakano have 30% westerners, this alone make them 30% less terrible, as dreadful it is to write this.
Also fuck the rain, and fuck cloudy days.
>>
>>2883422
You are supposed to be able to communicate the things you might need/want to communicate to the locals without hoping they accomodate you, don't travel or go with a tardwrangler if you're incapable of doing that.
This isn't exclusive to Japan.
In eastern europe if you don't know how to call the police and make a report, read a map to where you want to go, or have a native with you you'll get scammed by the taxi drivers.
>>
Wow the bait is being laid on thick tonight, did Tel Aviv refill the shills funding or something?
I would hope the only reason someone would act in such a pathetic was is because they were being paid to.

>>2883384
Honestly the anti-gaijin sentiment only bothers me because it's the most obvious fucking distraction psyop being run by the ruling elites and the average JP is just lapping it up. Tourism went through the roof be ause the yen is toilet paper, but the media told me to be mad about the tourists and not the fact my currency is being raped to death to keep the yen carry trade alive for the benefit for American (((investors))) and the like. Let's change the business manager visa to try and fuck with a tiny handful of fraudulent Chinamen but let in infinity jeets to permanently undercut the native Japanese and enforce wage suppression for low end jobs in a country that already has the most stagnant wages on the planet.

It's not like I expected any better or them sheep are sheepy everywhere but this is like babies first psyop, and it's annoying because the foreign percentage in Japan is so fucking small that if they closed the country tomorrow and executed every gaijin in public, they'd notice within a month that their life is still fucking dogshit and it had nothing to do with Kevin-kun and his not-so-上手 Japanese trying to get a haircut
>>
>>2883423
>Goes to the hawker maid containment zone
>Complains about hawker maids
What did you expect retard, at least you can be unaccosted on the main strip.
Also I have to hard disagree it hard mogs Akiba when you actually go looking for second hand items and doujin, far more likely to find something niche than in Aki where it's just endless shonen jump shit and gachaslop plus the latest FOTM. Only store I found anything decent in when I was in Tokyo was robotrobot? on the third floor in Nakano. Lain, Saya, SayoOshi etc. in the cabinet. The rest of Nakano sadly had little I cared for but some idolmaster pins and Akiba itself was fucking grim.
Mind you I don't think DenDen has anywhere as good as that one Nakano shop either but I've not checked out every store yet just visited a few times to wander or events like StreetFesta last weekend.

Google translate is going to work better than the 500 phrases you self-taught yourself on duolingo, anon. The locals might get a good laugh at your attempt to speak with them though.
>reading maps, dealing with taxi drivers
Unc still stuck in 2006 lol
I do speak a second (Asian) language, and I'm not saying it isn't incredibly useful when I'm in that country, but I'm not going to learn barber japanese for my two week or three week trip to japan and that's a retarded expectation for a tourist. Show them a picture and that should suffice. Restaurants and/or barbers refusing service to non-locals would be shitty behavior in any other country and japan isn't an exception.

I think I did my best or second best night /p/ session near Osaka. Thank god I didn't trust the weather, they're as shit as here it seems.
Was completely alone in a redisdential neighborhood, far away from the crowds by using my insane topo map skillz and streetview to plan a little bit. Most locals probably wondered wtf I was doing there for a second, though it was obvious at second glance. Most locals probably were thinking "Kuso, they're invading us even here now?". A comfy old obaa-san tried to communicate with me with the few english words she knew.
Man I don't even want to know how much housing is in these parts. Probably insane.
Not sure what to do during the day tomorrow, why can't it be golden hours and/or night 24:7.
>>
>>2883595
I really love these 'edge of the city' areas like in that shot (nice shot btw).
Glad you had a good shoot, would love to see a few more of your favourites from it.
Also, I don't think most Japanese would be thinking too bad of you if you aren't being a nuisance. Like the obaa-san you met, many are more curious than anything when someone has come to visit their little area of seemingly no obvious interest. At least in my experience.

Is Osaka a "day trip" from Tokyo? I'm going to be in Tokyo for 8 days and wondering if I can see neat things in Osaka in a single day from Tokyo. Google says the train is about 3 hours, but I'm wondering if anyone that's done that route had any advice.
>>
>>2883797
not really
3 hours by shinkansen isn't the same as 3 hours by train
>>
>>2883797
you'd have to catch the earliest train possible to make it worth it, which i think is 6am, to just arrive around ~9am, you'd then have most of the whole day because the last trains usually stop around 930 i think for shinkansen, so you'd get back 1130-12
so technically you'd have 12 hours to explore osaka, but with 6hours of train rides idk anon, osaka is mostly for two things. gateway to other day trips making it a great hub : kobe nara himeji and its got good nightlife via dotonbori. you'd be doing neither of those things as a day trip TO osaka.
id pass on that, but japan is about finding cool things YOU want to do, so if you know theres some stuff you wanna see/do/eat in osaka go for it, just gonna be a heavy day

Why are there so many "normie" tourists in Japan? What are they looking for?
>>
>>2883891
Good food, currently incredibly cheap, "omg japan so high tech!" meme, lots of history. Just to name some of the reasons.
While Japan has a lot that us autists like, it also has some of the highest density of normie liked things of any travel place too.
Then when something becomes the current popular place, more people go because you fit in by having visited the trending place.
Couldn't be simpler bro. Plus it was always pretty popular.
