personally I prefer the latter one

if you're fine with leaving Portugal
I'd go to the Pyrenees and hike there
because honestly, the charm of Portugal is mostly in it's (small) towns, scattered alongside the coast
or if you're into surfing

but for exclusively Nature oriented trips, be it a roadtrip or hiking
nearby areas in Spain are much cooler to explore

depends on what you mean by interior
my "alongside the coast" would include the ~20km from the coast
basically anything you can reach within a bicycle daytrip from your camping trip

but yeah
the actual, the immediate coast is very touristy
also where most of the people live though
so it's not necessarily bad
just depends on what you want to see

if you want to see villages like Sortelha
these are in the actual interior
