If anything, Vietnam used to be a very difficult country to visit, so stop glorifying 1990s Vietnam like it was some amazing experience. People were rude and hostile to foreigners for decades after the war. Price-gouging was universal. If you read travelogues from that era, very few foreigners enjoyed their trip.

Now Vietnam has become a lot easier and more enjoyable, even as prices remain moderate. People have learned Western-style friendly customer service, upfront pricing, and attractive business aesthetics. There's a much bigger diversity of foods and hotels to choose from. And yes, you can get away from the tourist crowds, sleep in non A/C slum rooms, and eat from dirty food stalls if you want to.

Because I went to Danang 5 years ago it was peaceful.
