Every day construction workers come to eat at an outdoor canteen near my home. I watch the canteen prepare the food in squatter conditions in an abandoned lot behind their stall. I used to live and work in Boracay for a period of 5 months. Worked in the tourism/nightlife industry (as a foreigner). Fun place to visit but shit place to live in terms of amenities though the local community is great. They've either already opened are in the final stages of opening up the large casino on island and there are very large (real fucking shopping centers finally) planned for Q4 2026. With like real stores. Insane for Boracay standards, makes me wanna come back now that I don't have to do all my shopping at horrible local markets. It's a very cheap place to live (my modern two room apartment 30 seconds from the beach cost me less then $400 a month including utilities) and the beach is absolutely beautiful. Island is becoming more modern and overall is a good place to settle down for a few months and frollick around in. If you don't like nightlife you'll get bored quick but otherwise it's fun. Avoid manoc-manoc at night, the drug trade (and the spillover crime) is real.
