What are some things I can do to squeeze some unexpected joy or unpredictability from my holiday to Washington DC? I'll be there for a week, including during 4 July.I've only been on holidays abroad a few times during my adult life, to a few European capitals, as a Brit. I go alone, walk a lot, visit museums, avoid all non-fast food restaurants, talk to no one, feel sad during the holiday, then feel much sadder when it ends.Unlike previous holidays to Paris, etc., I have actual expectations. I think DC will be swampy and humid. I think the city itself, apart from a few parts of Georgetown, will be very boring to walk through. I will probably fill my time with museums. I will visit Walmart.I think the buildings will be cuboids made of plastic.I am sure I will miss it when I leave but I expect it to be extremely gigamogged by Paris. I don't think cities even exist in the USA, apart from New York.
DC lifetime resident here. It's a pretty boring place unless you REALLY like derivative white marble buildings, bland government offices, or military facilities. The best way to see it is by bike. Rent an electric bike (ideally a proper one from a store, or the cap bikeshare) and bike around downtown - I recommend h st, pennsylvania, 11th and 7th sts downtownish, there's a protected lane on 15th that takes you into virginia and from there you can bike along the potomacor you can bike to navy yard and catch the anacostia riverwalk trail on the other side of the frederick douglass /south capitol street bridge) and ride to bladensburg waterfront park - you can keep going to college park metro or north to west hyattsville o even wheaton metro if adventurous but the main things to see in dc are threefold:anacostia between the rollerrink and bladensburgh waterfrontanacostia between waterfront, navy yard and 11st bridge to the east (you can't hug the water the whole time because of military facilities you sort of zig and zig out)and the potomac river trail (i dunno the official name) towards mt vernon - never taken it that far but you can ride from dc to alexandria and a lot is along the water through the trail is much more crowded and rougher than the anacostia riverwalk (on the far side of the river away from the city, yes its in the ghetto, yes its worth it)dc is sort of a cheap copy of rome/paris with derivative architecture there's a lot of cool stuff to see a few hours away in the mountains and I would recommend doing that if you have time (spruce knob, harpers ferry, blackwater falls)
DC is a pretty small city and you do not need a week there. Venture out into Old Town Alexandria or further into Virginia. DC will be hot and humid so dress appropriately. Bike or take the metro. The museums are one of the best parts of the city so take advantage. Just be on the lookout for blacks.
>>2887220>The museumsfuck off
>>2887226Thats what normies do - museums and monuments to war. Dc is a military base attached to an abandoned plantation turned into an experimental brown breeding ground.Plus you are gonna be here during the america 250 fuckfest so that will complicate everything possibly the worst time to come to do
Go to Annapolis one day. It's the site of the Naval College. Cool oldtown. No plastic cubes.>>2887226No, looking at the real life BAR and Viet Cong pungie sticks was awesome.
>>2887212you could fill your entire week just visiting museums. there's a lot to see there. washignton dc has its bad areas but in general it's a beautiful city. as a brit, it may be less interesting to you, but for americans there are all kinds of monuments, government buildings, the national cemetery and so on. spring would have been a better time to visit but july 4 probably makes up for it being summer.
>>2887226>go to a national capital known primarily for museums and monuments>"fuck off with museums"wtf else do you expect? Mountains? Nightlife? Go literally anywhere else lmao
>>2887226Literally the only redeeming part of DC, enjoy the feral groids and terrible traffic.
>>2887236there's mountains 2-3 hours away and I would recommend seeing that instead if you have timethere um are nightclubs but haha I dunno who does that maybe black people and white college kids >>2887240mmm the feral groids and insane traffic are my favorite features
>>2887212you could not have picked a worse time for crowds but all the good museums are free and it would take about a week to see everything at the mall.
>>2887259the museums are boringother places have better museumsdc museums are sanitized and there's too much security theater like an airport just to get inI hate being searched by black people just to look at art that's all behind plexiglass and EVERY room has uniformed blacks staring you down assuming you will do something wrong. Baltimore and Richmond have better food and more interesting art. I will tip my hat out for Della Barba pizza though, it's not near anything sorta off capitol hill, but the pizza is quite nice and comes in a variety of styles 2amys is also a classic (try the norcia) if you like neapolitan, and ledo's is trashy but delicious party pizza with like a pastry crust, spicy pepperoni (get the pepperoni) and a sweet sauce
>>2887226Not everyone is a loser fuck who goes to SEA to try and fuck a hooker.
>>2887267i havent been in a long time. is the security theater really that bad? i might just skip it
>>2887269It isn’t. This person is just dumb. Baltimore does not have better food than DC.
>>2887269It's just them poking through any bags you bring and I think going through a metal detector, but I mean your phone backup charger or eyeglasses can set it off, and I just don't like being accosted by blacks so I stopped dealing with those sorts of venuesthe best is probably the botanical garden (some is indoors, some is outdoors), the natural history museum (gems), and paleontology if you have little kids but I feel like the art is kinda boring and again its all behind plexiglass and there's black people staring you downrenwick is nice but they won't let you carry a backpack on your back (crafts and fiber art)I recommend biking by the water its a better use of your time and will be less awful in the summer heat as long as you keep a good pace - and by the water its a bit cooler. >>2887271its more adventurous dc is expense account dining and everything is bland and corporateI like hersh's pizza, maggie's farm for bistro bar stuff and there's like an english themed coffee shop in roland park thats nicealso a bakery I wanna say on the south side of town that's very trendy but I haven't been yet with timed releases (i.e. croissants at 8 am)also, ALSOif you are coming to dc, bike or drive through anacostiago to the bad part of towncross the riversee what others don'tit's worth it, you won't die just don't make eye contact or engage the locals I think there's some new food places in anacostia and theres a museum there tooalso richmond has a WAY better bakery (sub rosa) than anything in dc, dc sucks for bakeries also better pizza (pizza bones, sourdough, anchovies are quality)oh and if you are in dc, the old post office building ne trump hotel ne i dunno what its called now has a FREE elevator up to the top for scenic views just make sure you check on the times first, and I think there is a security theater aspectand you have to get tickets but going up the top of the washington monument is worth it if you can score tickets
>>2887268>Look guys! See! I don't have ANY sex at all! Do you approve of me now!?? Guys???
and make sure to walk around the navy yard and the wharf, but you can also sortaaa bicycle through most of them and I recommend doing that too and there's a weird but cool bicycle bridge near the waterfront I think the entrance is near maine ave and 9th st its a bit hard to find uphill from maine ave in a park but there's a bridge running parallel to 395 taking you across to hains point, which has a nice view out onto the water and across into virginiathere's also a nice bridge next to 495 for bikes or people with a good view of the water and va skyline near the mgm casino/alexandria
>>2887273Do not go to Anacostia. It’s just a crime ridden shithole and there is nothing worth seeing there.
>>2887278well, I mean, if you are a scaredy cat you can bike through itand the anacostia riverwalk trail is BEAUTIFUL and not that ghetto cuz white people use it and it is separated from neighborhoods by 295 (highway) and a river on the other side, between the rollerrink or you can start at the pennsylvania ave, 11 st, or south capitol st bridges, and go upstream to bladensburg waterfront park then from there you can just stop (that's the prettiest stretch) or connect to college park metro or west hyattsville (closer), via bike pathsgo to anacostia to see what's there, just drive around and bike aroundthe weird part of dc is having this grand capital city TOTALLY compromised by minorities that the ruling class imported themselves, embarrassingly, and nobody can talk about how segregated it isive spent hours biking around southeast dc and lived to tell the tale, just don't do anything stupid
>>2887279If you want beautiful just go out into Virginia.
>>2887280anacostia riverwalk is an easy paved well maintained biking trail with much of it running near the water, it gives you a good sense of the tidal eco-scapes of DC, where the rugged piedmont of Georgetown gives way to flatter, tidal areas more suitable for cotton and tobacco. you could also see kenilworth aquatic gardens - just off the bike trail, which may have some water lillies blooming by them you learn much more about our country by seeing the all black ghettos just 5 mi from the white house
>>2887279Bicycling is a degree of separation from the street. It makes you feel safer than being on foot, where you can easily be surrounded or followed by harassers.>>2887280Yes, you can take the 611-FR bus from DC to the Front Royal Walmart (kekekek, that's what OP wanted to see anyway) if you want to see mountains. From there a city loop bus takes you down to the Shenandoah entrance. It's going to be a sweaty climb on foot along the Dickey Ridge Trail, but it's entirely doable as a nature daytrip from DC.
>>2887212They're working hard to clean up the black teen menace and the scribblings of liberal vandals.
>>2887226I really don't understand this comment. Why exactly do you have a problem with museums?!
>>2887305They're a boring waste of time. Why would I travel across the world just to see some artificial curated bullshit. You might as well stay home and watch youtube travel vlogs at that point
>>2887407Please tell us what you do when you visit other cities.
>>2887407wrong, some museums are nice, but dc is kinda bland and the exhibits are too conservative to be fun or interesting >>2887466I already said the best thing to do in dc is walk around near the water and get a bike and bike the paved paths along the water
>>2887407>artificial curated bullshitYou realize if you go to an art museum those are the actual paintings by the actual artists right? lol
>>2887486that's not the issue, the issue is the selection is kinda boring it's like your rich old grandmother's house but she had more money than tastedc is an old plantation city turned into a military baseit made more sense when the blacks were working, and now they are just weaponized drones and you have to escape indoors where there are YET MORE blacks but these are paid to keep quiet unless you break "the rules" once you get outside of DC you realize how conservative the museums are in dc
>>2887407That's actually the point of visiting museums. Live gets pretty boring the older you get and you have to learn to get excitement out of the most boring things. I have always thought museums are boring, but now I'm 37 and learned recently that they can be quite entertaining. I think it's correlated to the age. I have seen it all so mos things are kinda boring to me, but that stupid drawing of a donkey that I saw in the ubud art museum still cracks me up.
>>2887466Walk around random places and talk to random people
Went 2 weeks ago. Ford theatre was really cool. Learned more about Lincoln and JWB than I ever knew before. Night tour of the monuments and memorials was great too
