EVA makes damn sure that I don't have lithium batteries in any of my checked baggage. It's been a thing ever since Samsung had that phone/tablet with defective batteries that were catching on fire at random, including in a few cases while onboard an aircraft. That was around 2016, IIRC.

Power banks are a more serious issue then most people realise, this started in China maybe 6 years ago.

A lithium fire is incredibly difficult to put out, the fumes are toxic, the extinguishers needed to do so are toxic, you can't bury one in sand, there's nowhere to throw them, and they're especially prone to catching fire if punctured, overcharged, shorted, etc etc. The prospect of a lithium fire on a plane is a serious concern and as these power banks get older, you start to see people with four, five year old ones, it becomes inevitable issue.

The second problem is that the density of lithium means they can't be scanned with metal detectors, you could hide anything in them, specifically explosives and being electrical they've all got the native capacity to power a detonator. So the prospect of some unwitting traveller being sold a lithium coated bomb and bringing it through an airport is also very high. Just look as mossad putting thousands of tiny bombs in generic pagers, and remotely detonating them with no idea at all where those were at the time. The ones that didn't blow up, were all basically free remote det bombs for hammas, who would totally try to hide them in isreali travellers luggage now they know how they work. And they have hundreds if not thousands of them.

You can charge a phone on a plane, you can turn your phone off in-flight. The reason why post 911 everyone was ordered to had nothing to do with interference, it was the risk that a smart phone could RF detonate a bomb in checked luggage.

We should just accept how things are now, better to leave the batteries at home then suffer a wave of cabins full of toxic smoke and exploding luggage.
