I am moving from Slovakia to China in 2 months because my studio relocated me. What should I expect? My English is bad and I don't speak Chinese either. Any typs and tricks? Do Chinese like tall handsome Slavs?

Most are trilingual (Mandarin, Cantonese and English). Their English is fine, but it’s more so used for tourism or business. I didn’t have a lot of trouble talking to locals and ordering in restaurants/bars or visiting museums. Every street sign and menu is also written in English. The dominant language is Cantonese though.
They have nice nature walks if you’re into that. I didn’t have the time to go to the beaches, but they seem nice as well.
They’re indifferent toward white people. They’ll think you’re a tourist or an international student if you’re young.
Get an Octopus card to get around the city. You can also use it to pay everywhere. Some, but not all, also work in Macau. You can reload them at any 7-Eleven.
7-Eleven is “expensive” there.A lot is marked up and can be double the price. Yeah, it’s ok for a quick snack or a water bottle as a tourist, but ask around what stores locals go to. I might get back to you when I remember the name of the local stores.
Food is cheap, housing is expensive.
The weather is nice in winter. Summer is hot, humid, and has some heavy showers.
The city is only really cyberpunk on the dock walks looking out toward HongKong Island or from the lookout at Victoria Peak. Your video is from Chongqing btw, not HongKong.

I wish I could tell you more, but I’ve only been there and can't compare it to other cities in China. Get yourself a beer and enjoy the light show, anon. It’s a fun city.

Hong Kong is the poor man's Chongqing.

HK has lots of rich white western European bankers. Most of the women there would prefer that, but there's definitely women who are interested in anything white. Especially those women who moved to HK from the mainland.

In Asia youre not a "slav" or "eastern european". You're just white/western with all its pros and cons.

How is Chinese beer "imported" if you're in China?

I went to CQ just last month. This is the view from my hotel. I went to HK before as well. Both are nice, but I'd go back to Chongqing any time.

HK is a special administrative region, with their own import/export regulations. So they import beer from mainland China. This other beer, Skol, is brewed in HK and doesn't have the imported label for example.

Chongqing is prob the most overhyped city in China. I generally prefer Mainland travel to Hong Kong, but HK > CQ for me

I'm more of a beer guy, but sure, I'll try it when I go back in September. I'll also be going to mainland China so if anyone has any more recommendations, that'd be nice.
If you're into cocktails in HK, I'd recommend the Red Room Bar. Great view over the Peninsula hotel, and the guy behind the bar had very good English. It stays open later than most other bars too, so it's nice for a late-night drink. We kind of stumbled into it by accident.

>What should I expect?
>My English is bad and I don't speak Chinese either.

You should expect to have transactional relationships with locals, 'normal' relationships with HKers who have more international upbringings but it'll either be through work or arranged activities like hiking, jogging or cafe hopping. Much like everywhere else that's not a brown shithole, you won't get much 'organic' social interactions or spontaneous acts of kindness, HKers are self-centered and hyper aware of whose taking up their space and time.

White people are not a novelty in HK and no one will bat an eye, your 'tall handsome slav' thing might work in mainland China for naive performative girls but it won't in HK. Many of those type of eastern-euro mystery meats dating those type of girls in Shenzhen who hop over to HK during the weekends but are ignored by locals.

Your English being bad won't really matter, the vast majority of locals have even worse English. Most of the other White expats you'll meet nowadays are a hodge-podge of Europeans and Slavs anyways, socializing in the expat sphere is heavily within the bar scene (where a draft beer costs $80HKD+ per glass). But even within expat circles there's a hierarchy, theres the highly paid expats working in finance or law, then theres the lower-level expats who work in education or creative/sales/marketing roles or other weird retail or whatever gig work there is. Its like, Australians/Brits/Americans/Germans are typically in the first tier; then Eastern Euros, French, Scandinavians, South Africans and White looking latinos/arabs are in the latter.

I'm waffling now, but you get the jist. Everything is fucking expensive, yes including food if you compare to Mainland China or SE Asia. If you want actual organic healthy food you'll be paying at least $200-500 HKD per person. You'll be living in a shoebox apartment. If you smoke, you'll be spending $120HKD per pack.
>>
>>2892727
>>2891902

You will be living in a TINY apartment. I can't stress that enough and you'll be spending 1/2 your salary on it to, because you'll either be wanting to live in either Sai Ying Pun or Sheung Wan where the other single white people are at.

You think you'll be having relationships with Chinese, but you very likely wont. No matter what, you will feel poor in HK. Public transport is very good though and there is nice nature out of the cities where you can go to the beach, go hiking or enjoy a bike ride.

It really depends what kind of things you enjoy. I can't see what activities you enjoy besides wanting to be regarded as attractive by the local women from your post. But to stress it again, unless you're rich or have a lot of social clout (like a influencer or celebrity) you won't attract the top-tier HK girls.
>>
>>2892729
>the top-tier HK girls.
who needs the top? most people are more than happy with mid girls. top tier is an ego boost thing and even then if you're in the right place at the right time anything can happen
>>
>>2892730

What I was trying to say is don't expect to walk around HK as a white guy and expect a lot of attention from locals. You could still score a highly attractive girl in tier-3 and below cities in China.

View HK girls the same as western girls, they are literally no different. Even the mid girls in HK have weird obsessions with cats, cafes and their careers and demand lots of charm from men even if they're mid.
>>
>>2892740
>You could still score a highly attractive girl in tier-3 and below cities in China.
its way easier to do it in a tier 1. the girls in the backwater cities are uglier and socially retarded and there are more simps there

Why is it so comfy to drink in public in countries where it is allowed? It’s so viscerally satisfying to crack a beer as soon as you leave the Lawson’s checkout. I’ve had great times 干杯ing with uncles and other tourists on the front steps of convenience stores, or in nice scenic places on the Shanghai bund. Similar experiences in Copenhagen. I guess they trust people not to behave badly when they drink. Truly the mark of a superior culture.

>What I was trying to say is don't expect to walk around HK as a white guy and expect a lot of attention from locals

False i got approached every day by locals who were excited to talk to me because im white
>>
>>2892809

No one in Hong Kong will approach and try to start a conversation with you randomly on the street just because you're white. Maybe you looked like a major faggot or something.
>>
>>2892887
When I was walking around trying to find a place to eat, a random old man invited me into a restaurant. He asked me to order anything I want on the condition that I also get a beer. We talked while eating, and at the end, he paid for everything. Sure, it wasn't a cute girl, but I got a free meal and a conversation with an old man just because I'm white.

Old man wanted that gweilo bussy. He tried to slip you something but either it didn't take, or you just tanked a tiny chinaman dose of GHB.
>>
>>2892891

Really depends where you were. But being anywhere that has Chinese girls as a tall handsome slav, you won't suddenly be approached just because you're white. When the fuck do girls just randomly approach you anywhere at anytime unless they're trying to scam you or they're handing out fliers or something.

I think it's because people don't treat you like someone who is doing something wrong. It makes for a more social atmosphere, so other travellers and sometimes even locals are more likely to join you. Other places can have the same vibe, but it's usually in bars. I guess it's really a cultural thing.

Picrel is a farewell gift from the guy I was drinking with, he left a day earlier than me. It was very comfy to meet up multiple times with the same guy for a drink and discuss what we did that day. Only time that’s happened to me.

>>2892809
Sure I met with a few curious locals asking where I'm from and why I'm visiting, but most people in HK minded their own business in my experience. Every day? Did you only walk around Temple Street or something?
>>
Just a tip. Saying you are ‘moving to China’ when you are in fact moving to Hong Kong is a sure fire way to piss off locals

Do some research

I just did my research and this point seems pretty important. Thanks for the tips everyone in this thread. Interesting informatios. I guess I am just going to use real time ai translator for my everyday basic communication with locals.

start today. it's a long journey but every bit helps. at least get familiar with the pinyin before you go. if you are going to be in hong kong exclusively long term, you would benefit greatly from learning their local cantonese instead of mandarin. they hate mandarin and would rather use their shitty english instead
