I wanna go see some museums in China, but it seems quite daunting. Is it difficult to function as someone who doesn't speak a lick of Chinese? I'd at least want to visit Beijing and Qingdao. Will I be treated badly / scammed as a white guy?
>>2892085>Is it difficult to function as someone who doesn't speak a lick of Chinese?Yeah, kinda, especially because none of the useful map apps have an english version on android phones>Will I be treated badly / scammed as a white guy?No, everybody was friendly and helpful even the police. Most Chinese scams are against other Chinese or about fucking you over in business, as a casual tourist you don't have much to worry about
>>2892085Just download Chinese on google translate and screencap the text to translate. EZPZ
>>2892085what are translators
>>2892085> treated badly>scammed >white guy>chinanigga you'll be fine, I had groups of boomers always buying me beers and wanting to sing US pop songs on the karaoke machineChina is safe as fuck
Bro, China is super safe... i was traveling with a friend there recently (End June); Bejing - Huangshan -Shanghai and i would say even alone and as a white woman you could pull it off - meet two chicks who where traveling alone. Also, we split sometimes up to do our own shit...no problem...Scamming? Na, there are some merchants who might to sell you "shitty" stuff or try get you in a shop..say no, and move on. just be dumb and get into a conversation with them - thats it. Bejing especially; u got police on every corner...they still take care of the pedestrians crossings...lol....language barrier is real, you better get a translator app. Alipay got some half baked translator function in it....and WeChat got a translator too.DiDi (Uber in China) will get you everywhere for a few Dollars... so u can also avoid bus/metro etc.
>>2893241the only annoying part is payments and sometimes shitty internet other it's a peak destination these days
>>2893243Once i got Alipay up and running - i found i pretty easy to pay. Well its not as super easy as just NFC-tapping...but get them a QR Code and confirm the payment in the app, is still pretty fast - also the advantage is that every small retailer does use it...even the grandma who is selling flowwers on the streets...for internet - used Saily Sim which also gave me the benefit to avoid any blockings of western apps...thus i could use WhatsApp , Google still.... dunno where OP is from, but it might help him...And last...i´m usually as OP...scared AF....but after doin 2 weeks China...its really easy and nice...
>>2893258>SailyNever used it but in my experience esims are where it's at for China, pretty damn reliable for accessing western services. Hotel wifi is fucking hit and miss sometimes when you want to just use basic Google shit like maps or GmailI don't know how it works but they don't really seem to give a shit about it, always end up with an IP out of Hong Kong or Singapore though and all the search results show me stuff from there despite being thousands of km away haha
>>2892085you need to research if the museums need you to book tickets online in advance first or you can go in on the day, most of them need you to book in advance. sometimes it's a bit of a hassle to enter your passport info in but you will figure it out eventually through screenshot + paste into google translate.here are my recs for museums in Beijing (all of which I have personally visited):S-tier>Forbidden City 故宫>National Museum 国家博物馆>Capital Museum 首都博物馆 (really good)>Summer Palace 颐和园A-tier>CCP Museum 共产党历史展览馆>Railway Museum Eastern Suburbs site 铁道博物馆东郊馆B-tier>Stele Museum 石刻艺术博物馆>Old Summer Palace 圆明园C-tier>Railway museum main site 铁道博物馆正阳门馆>Customs Museum 海关博物馆and there are like 20-30 more big onesIn Qingdao just go to the Tsingtao beer museum and the PLN (Chinese Navy) Museum, the rest are kinda boring>Will you be scammeddon't 100% trust random people on the streets, book taxis through your phone, and don't eat at tourist spots. You are most likely to be scammed by an unlicensed taxi driver.
