I'll be traveling to Romania in August, and since Ruse is only two hours away from Bucharest by bus, I've decided to spend 3-4 days in northern Bulgaria before I start exploring Romania. What other cities or landmarks in the north are worth seeing while I am there?

Plovdiv has Roman ruins. Was a Thracian settlement originally, then Greek, then Roman. Lots of history there.

Extremely boring ruins

Is there anything worth seeing other than ruins in Plovdiv?

>>2896556
Any other suggestions?

You probably know this already, but you should really go to Rila

It’d be cool to visit someday, but it’s on the other side of the country. Varna was recommended to me, and it and Ruse seem like the only interesting spots up north.

Make a stop in Shumen to visit the 1300 Years Monument.

Sofia was mid for me, 2 days or 3 at most, are fine. I was there for 4 days and on last day, I felt there wasnt anything interesting to see anymore. Visited Plovdiv for one day, ruins are alright, but nothing special. Overall, kinda underwhelming trip
>>
Just stay in Romania and avoid Bulgaria

The north, west of Ruse is a desolate wasteland
Visit the castle left over from the Romanian occupation in Balchik, Tutrakan is also a notable place for a visit if you are into history
Geographically it is boring

>The north, west of Ruse is a desolate wasteland
Name a place that isn't a desolate wasteland in Bulgaria.
>>
Varna is pretty good.

Thoughts on this Bulgaria itinerary, with the number in parentheses being the number of nights at each stop?
I'd be using Sofia as a base to explore Pirin, Rila, and some other place, using guided tours because I'm lazy.
Burgas would be a place to chill and see Nessebar and Sozopal, and Varna is just a stop on the way to see the Danube Delta in Romania.

>Two days in Plovdiv
What for? Chill in Varna longer instead.

If its of any help, I took a bus tour to the monastery from Sofia. There are many itineraries out there which are quite readily available.

Good idea, thank you.

Varna is pretty boring desu unless you want to lay out in the sun at the beach. You could just spend all your time in Sofia, walking around through crumbling concrete commie blocks, looking at old poor people struggling in poverty at markets, venturing into gypsy neighboods getting scared really just immersing yourself in a post Soviet wasteland where people don't breed (except gypsies) and everyone is bitter and angry

>Hecking soviet babushkas and adventure into gypsy neighborhoods!
Nice one, bald and bankrupt. Please stick to your videos instead of spreading your weird ideas about what counts as a fun trip.

Bulgaria almost became an SSR
