It really depends on the hostel, they are all over the place. If you want to sleep well, then obviously don't pick a party hostel. As for the price vs a hotel room, that's again all over the place. The best bet is to find a hostel that's not a party hostel but still has a downstairs bar and common room, and then get a private room there if it's not hotel room priced. Then you can get the good parts of both, socializing with travellers in the bar and common room, and still have the bed and room to yourself (and a possible pickup if you're lucky).

I did it once in Switzerland because it was the only option left in the area I was going. It was full of Brits shouting all hours of the day and night and being drunk. Piss sprayed everywhere in the bathrooms. Liquor bottles shoved into the toilets and beer glasses in the urinals. I'm 36, stay in hostel private rooms, never have issues. Then again I gym regularly, have a full head of hair no weird hairline BS, low BF on my face anyways, and a slew of hobbies so it's a non issue.

I like them because I get a kitchen that isn't BS, good place to work, and often closer to public transportation than some alternatives. As long as you aren't trying to hit on someone barely legal as a +30 year old you're fine.
