There's pros and cons to both. Having visited Europe and lived in Japan. I'll explain why America is alright. The weather is irrelevant. I get in my car and drive with the A/C or heat on and don't get wet if it's raining. I live in the South and don't need anything bigger than a hoodie or a jacket.
Don't have to wait on trains, don't have to worry about the train being delayed, don't have to squeeze in to a full traincar. Don't have to run up and down multiple stairs to catch the next train. I just get in my car and get where I want when I want. Traffic jams are usually avoidable in my city.
Having a big backyard is nice because I can let my kids or dogs play in it and not have to worry about taking them anywhere unless I want to.
That said, walkable communities exist in the U.S. they're for the vast majority very dirty and crime-ridden. This was the result of 60 years of govt planning and social engineering btw. They apparently like it this way. I've lived in a city center in the U.S. in my early 20's and it's not a place for families.
Europe is apparently in a hurry to make their cities the same way. Munich was probably the best in Germany i visited though.
