Going to checkout St Louis since I'm an architecture fan and have a soft spot for shitty cities that used to be good. I already got a lot of a big stuff on my list, but for anyone who lives there/been there, what do you like to do? My hotel is west in Richmond Heights. I was told to try Salt + Smoke but really any good bbq place will do.on the list:>Arch + riverboat>City Museum>Zoo>Botanical Gardens>Basilica>Union Station>St Louis Wheel>Old Courthouse>Vintage Vinyl (rec'd by a local)Maybe cross over to ESL to see the urban decay there. I love the old bridges that cross the Mississippi.
Check out Soulard/Benton Park south of downtown. Cool gentrified area with brick architecture

I'm possibly headed through the St Louis area to visit the Ozarks, the highways just run through there (from the east), so I guess I'm interested in this too, I just don't want to get robbed.

Let's say you don't count the suburbs at all. The murder rate in St Louis would still be almost double the murder rate in Louisville. You can google it. There are only about 8 cities in the US murder rates as bad at St Louis in the downtown areas. They correlate almost exactly with the cities in the US with the most concentrated groups of black people. Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, Birmingham, Memphis, Oakland, New Orleans and Kansas City. I lived in Baltimore. There were neighborhoods that looked like a nuclear bomb had gone off, or a zombie apocalypse had happened. But there were some nice areas in the city that were fine. But if you drove into the hood to buy drugs once a week, you'd probably be dead in a year.
>>2898201Baltimore has a few random nice things though like some of the nearby hikes are quite nice - Liberty Dam would be so pretty if you catch it at high water when it's running. And I like some of the restaurants - Hersh's Pizza and Maggie's Kitchen are worth going out of the way for. Sometimes shitty cities have nice things somewhere. It's not ALL bad.
