Hi, I'm an Europoor in my mid 20s visiting family in DC in a few weeks. I'll see them for the weekend but everyone will be gone by Monday afternoon. I have a shit tonne of annual leave that I have to use and I've been spending it just watching TV shows the last few years. So I decided to not book a return ticket and explore. My family said it's not a good idea since I have no car, no driving license and America is very autocentric. However, I have hope. Hope that a sliver of America exists outside of the Freeway. Are there any places I should visit? I can be here for max 2 weeks. I have maybe $5,000 to spend. I noticed you have trains that run overnight. I am happy to spend a few nights sleeping on the plane. I don't need much sleep.Problem, I am a very good religious man. I am not interested in Miami nightlife, hookers, bars, clubs, concerts, hookup culture, etc. I want to have a fun trip. I want an American experience but like Phineas and Ferb so I want to try stuff like the tallest roller-coaster, hike in a national park, try hunting maybe, jetski, whatever is fun. I don't want to see buildings all day or have a tour guide. Washington DC will be enough. Maybe NYC or Boston because they have a lot to see but that's about it.Either a North East trip or a trip that's all over North America. I also don't mind Mexico and Canada.Help me plan this please. I have no friends.
>>2898076DC to Boston has enough public transportation to get you anywhere, just enjoy nigger filled buses and trains. Flixbus/greyhoud for long haul buses, uber for around town.
>>2898076>So I decided to not book a return ticket and explore.Enjoy arriving and being sent right back to whatever shithole you came from. Without a bunch of cash to show how you can pay for yourself in the USA or a way for onward travel they might not even let you board.Coming to the USA without a return ticket will get you shipped back, not even sure how you can fill out ESTA with no return ticket. >inb4 but what about muh migrantslol not biden anymore
>>2898076>re there any places I should visit? I can be here for max 2 weeks. I have maybe $5,000 to spend. I noticed you have trains that run overnight. >>2898077I would rather sleep during my travels. So like a 11 hour train from DC to Savannah is ideal. I wake up 6am, ready to enjoy the city. DC to Boston is too fast. There are overnight options but they're sort of long when you consider the delays that are apparently normal. I'd rather take a flight from DC to Anchorage and save $200 on a hotel again. See and do something truly worthwhile maybe. Also not interested in dying in a driveby. I will avoid the hoods.>>2898082My hippie parents took me to dodgy countries after 2011 so they can do charity work so I shouldn't be given an ESTA, technically I can just not reveal it but that would be lying and I don't know what the American government will do if they find out>aybe ban me for lifeSo I told the truth and filled out a B1 VISA, I went to the embassy and they gave me an expedited bookmark. I think it's because I work for an American company that's a bit glowie. They didn't give a shit about anything. They just let me skip all the queues and get out within 15 minutes. Usually they take 2-3 hours here according to the security guard that was surprised that I was granted a VISA immediately.I admitted that I don't have any ticket except the one way and I'm not sure what I will do. They were fine with it. I guess it'd be very strange for me to disappear into America.BTW is $5,000 not enough for a week or two? That's all I'm comfortable spending max. Ideally less. >>2898083No not that religious. Just find sex icky and scary because of STD scares and stuff subconsciously I guess. I'm a bit scared of germs, maybe light OCD or phobia.
>>2898085>BTW is $5,000 not enough for a week or two?I was living in NYC on $1200 a month. If you stretch it to a month you can save money. If you dont care about sex NYC is a good fit. You can do beta onions shit like ebic phineas and ferb or whatever. Outdoor shit is a pipedream without a car
>>2898089What if I sleep on the train overnight. DC to Savannah is a good example. If no good overnight train then fly to opposite coast like San Diego, get there early and enjoy the beach, eat breakfast, explore city, maybe some fun midday activity then train overnight or fly. I can go anywhere as long as it's walkable when I get there.North East>DC>NYC>BostonSouth East>Savannah>MiamiCalifornia>San Diego>San Francisco>LA if its not actually that bad to walk around the nice parts and use trainOther places I'd like to go>Chicago>Seattle>Montreal>Hawaii>Somewhere in MexicoI'm not a fool, I know that most of the US is not that accessible without a car but this should be good, right? If I do this I might never have to sleep in hotel.Potential 12 nights of no hotel. Please help plan the transits. Ideally 8 hours sleep. No problem with 6 hour flight a few nights in a row if I get a nice 11 hour sleeper train after to recoup my bedtime losses. It can work?
>>2898093My wife has done sleeper cars on Amtrak before and said it was okay.As others have said, the East coast corridor from DC to Boston has trains running back and forth. It looks like you can do a Stop off in Charleston SC on the way to Savannah, GA. Not sure why you want to go to Savannah, but they have pretty similar vibes. And I'm partial to Charleston. The bus ride will be from Savannah to Miami would not be my first choice. If you're really trying to save on a hotel, I'd try hostelworld.com and compare prices. Hostels in the U.S. are usually a safe bet compared similarly priced hotels which may be in unsafe areas. You can probably take a train to Chicago. And a train to Seattle from there. Chicago is kind of known for its gang violence problem and Seattle is known for its tweakers. But might be fun.California can't into trains, so that will be an interesting smelling bus ride.Montreal seems cool. Hawaii will be a 10 hour flight at least.
>>2898099No hostels for me. Don't want to risk becoming a sob story. Sleeper trains or flights only and they must land in the morning so I can make the most of the day. For example, a train from Chicago to Buffalo arrives in the morning, I can see Niagara Falls, and do fun touristy stuff for the day. Maybe even fly out from Toronto for better options. You don't need to plan the entire day for me, just suggest any sleeper train routes you know about that I wouldn't. Like after a trip to San Francisco, I could take a train from Oakland to Dunsmuir for the day to see nature since I probably won't see any. It's an overnight train from 9pm to 5am. Damn near perfect. Then I can take a train down to Sacremento the next night so I can see the state capital and maybe do some stuff there that you might know. That could be a nice way to do a Northern California leg of the trip without any hotels.
>>2898093I’m not sure you appreciate how far away or how expensive Hawaii is.
>>2898101>That could be a nice way to do a Northern California leg of the trip without any hotels. Are you planning to shower or will you do every night on a train? What is your aversion to sleeping in a hotel?
>>2898108It says 100 dollars from west coast. Not bad. Cheaper than hotel. I get there early morning, go beach, eat, have fun, and leave at night. What's the problem? Will food really be that expensive? Remember there are no hotels for me. >>2898109Such a waste of money and more importantly time. It's just there for me to sleep. If I can move and sleep at the same time, I can do more. Maybe double, triple, even quadruple the places I see in this vacation. America is a big place. Why deprive oneself of its blessed variety for temporary comfort? I am like rock, I sleep wherever, no problemo.>showerYes we have this thing called a gym. I can get cheap day pass and shower. My bigger concern is dirty clothes. Maybe I accept a rest and recovery afternoon once in a while for clothing. At least it's summer, I can just bring many shorts and shirts. Actually maybe I will just buy when I'm in America. It should be max 50 dollars to send a bag full of dirty clothes back to Europe. Worth it to just have a single carry on bag and save on flights.
you won't see shit without a carwasting your timeenjoy being stuck with niggers on a bus
>>2898101>wait he's actually retardedwhy dont you just stay with your family (for free) and see the daily life in DC. can do day trips if you really want to
>>2898139dc lifetime resident hereDO NOTits boring and shitty and there are darkies everywhereOP should rent a car and go somewhere cool
>european>religiousSalam
>>2898093>I'd like to visit Ireland, Romania, Cairo, and Tenerif in one tripthat's basically what you're trying to do.
>>2898144glownigger
>>2898159im a neet (srsly)
>>2898137Fuck no>>2898139I have 6 weeks of annual leave left and I'm doing nothing with it. I'm not wasting it all in DC. I'm already getting a day tour from a relative. The problem is most of them will be off to uni or in high school.>>2898144Rent a car, with no license, hmmm>>2898150Yes, you have discovered me. Orientalist grandpa became a Muslim, married a Uyghur and moved back to the Netherlands, and my father married a Surinamese revert who's apparently mostly native. I'm a super mutt. My parents did charity work in Somalia and Sudan, and dragged me along in my teens so I couldn't get an ESTA. >>2898152Is that not basically what Americans do in their Europe trip? Why spend it all in Bruges?
>>2898205Americans go to one city in Europe and stay there.
>>2898093This is a great plan. Don't listen to naysayers
>>2898216Hmm, what a waste. When I've been places, there's diminishing returns. By the time it's 10pm I've had enough. I don't mind enjoying silly night life stuff like karaoke or talking to locals. I am very comfortable talking to strangers.>>2898222Any places that you recommend or tips? I'm trying to experience as much of America as possible. Only the summer experience so Hawaii, San Diego and maybe Miami for the beach. I will like to surf, go on a jetski and other shenanigans.I have discussed my plans with my family, they believe I am insane. Shouldn't it be really easy to take a flight out of a midsized airport? Gates close 30 minutes before take off. Be through security 1 hour before the flight. Security should be 1-2 hours max.If I ship off my dirty clothes and just buy new ones along the way, it should be fine. I can shower at gyms or use a cheap day pass hotel/motel right?
>>2898205>6 weeks at [TRAVEL DESTINATION]:/>6 weeks sitting in transit to [TRAVEL DESTINATION]:O
>>2898237Yeah my tip is don't treat a train or bus like a hotel room.
>>2898089>Outdoor shit is a pipedream without a carColorado: Am I a fucking joke to you?>>2898129With a hotel you can explore town and the vicinity without carrying your stuff everywhere. Luggage storage is expensive. Amtrak is expensive too. Get a railpass if you really want to ride overnight trains all over the country for two weeks. It gives you so much freedom to make last minute trips without worrying about extortionate ticket prices. It takes a lot of time to explore. The more places you visit, the less time you'll have to actually explore and soak in a place instead of hurrying from A to B to C, stressing over every delay or difficulty. USA can have very bad weather, sometimes you will have to sit tight for a while.Coin op laundromats are everywhere here in the USA. Getting a gym daypass is more iffy. And are you leaving your suitcase on the beach while you surf? Lots of thieves in American cities...
>>2898280Train, yes. It's comfy enough for sleeping. Bus, hell no. Greyhound seats are atrocious. Sleep deprivation will ruin your ability to enjoy places. Of course you can nap in public parks...
>>2898093Trains and planes go on their own inflexible schedules. City buses have fixed operating hours. You can't expect transport to depart or arrive when you want them to depart or arrive. You MUST plan your trip to align with the schedules. It takes a lot of travel experience and research (using Google Maps transit directions) to line up a trip with good timing.>non-white, limited budget, no hotel bookings, no return flightSorry bud, you're not going to be admitted to the US as a tourist. Only we citizens get the privilege of being vagabonds here.
>>2898263I'll be asleep. >>2898280It was fine during school trips and I sleep fine on planes. I don't see a problem.>>2898282The overnight trains are cheaper than hotels or as expensive. >takes a lot of time to exploreHmmm no. Any exploring that takes a lot of time is due to transit, like taking the car out to said location and time wasted by having people around that aren't quick. >stressing over every delay or difficultyI do not stress easily. >suitcase on the beach while you surfSuitcase? No, I will ideally only have one carry on bag for all my shorts, shirts, boxers, socks, etc. There are lockers at most airports. I'll double check before booking. I will take a small pouch bag around. The surf places I'm checking out have lockers for items.I plan to just walk around with a battery pack for my phone, my wallet and sunglasses. With no kids or friends to wait on, I can just do everything quickly.
>>2898237>Hmm, what a waste. When I've been places, there's diminishing returns. By the time it's 10pm I've had enough. I don't mind enjoying silly night life stuff like karaoke>If I ship off my dirty clothes and just buy new ones along the way, it should be fine. I can shower at gyms or use a cheap day pass hotel/motel right?>>2898282He's a noob wagey in US for a couple of weeks. He doesn't know his ass from his elbow. He'll end up sobbing in a ditch crying for mommy and suffering heat exhaustion if he tries to do what you do. That's if he even gets past immigration. There's a non-zero chance he gets picked up by DHS/ICE agents while he's snoozing in a tent in Shitsville
>>2898284Yh I'm avoiding buses. Overnight trains and flights that are 6+ hours long. >>2898286>Sorry bud, you're not going to be admitted to the US as a touristI told the lady at the embassy that I have no return ticket, she didn't care. I guess my company is on the "do not bother our employees" list since it has contracts with US government agencies. Although there are some databases that I can't get access to and US colleagues have to get blood tests, fingerprints and interviews to have access to it. Why else would I be the only person to skip the queue?Don't worry, I'm not looking to fuck around. Just enjoy the variety of the US and go home after two weeks. I won't visit again without a car.
>>2898290>I told the lady at the embassy that I have no return ticket, she didn't care.she dgaf if you get cuffed and sent home the moment you step off the plane and get interrogated by border control. it's good for the economy if you buy two plane tickets for no reason
Endless travel - Seattle! LA! Miami! Chicago! Hawaii! Boston! - sounds cool until you realize that 50+% of your trip will be spent stuck in a chair doing absolutely nothing besides feeling gross, getting a sore ass and watching an endless blur of scenery pass by that you cannot explore or experience. Whereas nobody is forcing you to stay inside a $90 motel room. You are free to get a transit daypass and explore as much of the city as you want, fresh smelling and unburdened by luggage. Rent a bike, ebike, or scooter to save your legs. And for godsakes, buy a nice return ticket from Chicago O'Hare if you want any chance of entering the USA. You can go anywhere by train from Chicago (apart from New England).
>>2898288Yeah I'm definitely getting the feeling that OP has never travelled like this before in his life, much less without a car in the USA. He thinks that he can casually wish every ride, amenity and service he desires into existence no matter where he is and what time he shows up. >>2898287You'll find out about Amtrak's dynamic pricing soon enough. No, it is not cheaper than staying in a motel.
And in case OP thinks I'm being a NeverTravelled doomer, I'm not. In fact, I'm currently traveling the USA without a car. My thread here: >>2897589I've stayed two motel nights and two hostel nights in my first ten nights in the USA. "hurr durr I'll NEVER stay in a motel" is the retarded autism speaking. Travel is much more enjoyable when leisure time is maximized and transit time is limited. But some people do get addicted to riding Amtrak day after day. It's very confining, only being able to walk a narrow corridor between cars or stroll up and down the platform during a five minute halt. Buses are even worse, you can't walk around. In both cases your balls get so squashed from endless sitting, it feels awful. And if you ride an overnight train stepping off at 7 AM, guess when the next train is coming through? That's right, 7 AM. So what do you do for a night in town? You get a room, obviously.
>>2898298he probably saw your thread already and wants to larp as you but the problem is OP and you have conflicting constrictions. You have infinite time and little money, OP has infinite money but only two weeks because he's a wagey. The smart move for him is to stay in DC with his family for free as a base, and do daytrips around the DMV area while taking advantage of his free accommodation. He should be saving money so he can position himself to grow the balls needed to quit his job and get his life back
>>2898294>sounds cool until you realize that 50+% of your trip will be spent stuck in a chair doing absolutely nothing besidesSleeping. I'll be sleeping and it won't be 50%. Probably 20% of my waking hours in transit. Worth it. >fresh smellingI'll shower>unburdened by luggage.I will only have a big backpack. I'm not bringing much. >you want any chance of entering the USAAhhh so they block you from entering without a return? I see. I'll have all my tickets booked by then. Maybe I wasn't clear. I told the embassy lady I don't have anything booked yet. I'll have it all booked by the time that I go including Amtrak so I don't end up not having a ticket available on arrival. Each leg will be planned by then. I just need help planning all the legs out, optimising for minimal hotel use.>>2898296>OP has never travelled like this before in his lifeI have, in Europe. My main complaint is that people slow me down and I can get everything I want out of a city done within a day. Hotels are so inefficient. I could sleep whilst going to another city and experience something new again. The problem with Europe is the flights are too short. Impossible to sleep enough but America? I can go from east to west coast no problem. Just need to time it right.>>2898298>That's right, 7 AM. So what do you do for a night in town? You get a room, obviously.I have taken it into consideration and a few have optimal times even when departing because both directions leave the station at different times. It's only the exact same time when I am going in the same direction. Most of these places will ideally have hub airports. For example, Chicago to Buffalo, I can get off at 8am, see Niagara Falls and fly out from Toronto if I want. There's an overnight train that ends in Oakland in the morning too, I can spend a whole day in San Francisco and then fly out.Now do you see?>>2898305Small mind. I'm disappointed. I assumed Americans dreamed big.
>>2898310Yeah leaving Chicago at 9PM and getting to Buffalo at 4PM sounds like a real treat.
>>2898313It's 8am actually and this is basically perfect. No TSA or ICE. I want more examples like this. If I can do 4 nights like this I'm happy. Enough sleep to recover from any issues with the 6 hour flights.
>>2898237>Any places that you recommend or tips?Just wing it everywhere is great
>>2898314whats even the point of this? for most people the stopover is the worst part of the trip. you are trying to fill 14 days straight of stopover only. and if you go to a place but it was only a stopover it doesnt count as having been there. you're trying to flex on IG or you want to be able to say "I seened it doe", you're not actually interested in knowing these places
>>2898395Let him be a dumbass if he wants to be
>>2898395>was only a stopover it doesnt count as having been there. I have been on family trips and vacations in Europe. The only time I ever get to know the place is when I am alone and spend the whole day in the place. Wasting hours waiting around for other people is a drag. The last time I was in Switzerland with family, I literally never saw anything despite being there 3 days since I was spending 30% of the time waiting around for people to get ready, and because there was a large group mobility was limited and we had to drive everywhere.I went there alone once for a work related conference, spent an entire Saturday just seeing the city, eating the very expensive meals, meeting people, etc. By the time it reached 7pm I've even bought a spare ticket for a local football game with some fans I met, by 10pm I've done it all really. I know the place well, I even cycled back to the hotel without looking at the map. I think I cycled like 20km that day and walked another 20km. It was fun but the next day I was just bored. I went to a museum, boring, had some chocolate at a factory which tasted nice but was boring. I've already seen it all. Conversations started to get boring. From my experience, if you're alone, you can do it all in 6 hours for a small city. Since the US has a few walkable cities and many are only walkable for a square mile max, I can experience all that I can within the day. I don't have a car or a driving license. I'm not going to see a secluded beach that's only accessible by a 30 minute drive. I'm getting the most out of it and that's possible without slow people. >>2898391I don't want to spend a moment planning when I'm there. Just fun fun fun. I've got a few legs of the trip planned out already now with activities. Just a few with difficulties when it comes to connecting the legs.
