How much of the "old" Akihabara still exists? I've never visited Japan before but I've wanted to mainly for their retro and vintage technology. From a few friends who've been I've heard there is much less of those shops nowadays.
Is it still worth a trip if that's my main interest in visiting?.

Most of it's gone, super potato and some doujin shops are around, some of the electronic part stores are there. COVID shut down a lot of the niche shops and chinese/gacha sloppa stores have shoveled in. It's worth still if you never been, just realize 90% of the anime stores are cookie cutter copies.

Nakano has more older things and same with Ikebukoro, ironically osaka's DenDen town has more the feel of precovid akihabara than aki does today.

That sucks, but I guess the cookie cutter tourist trap shit makes more money than niche shops.
Makes me sad though, nothing interesting about going into those types of places, no charm to them.

It's fat old tourists now. It's really just strange walking around there and seeing 70 year old obese Italians and Americans walking around and looking confused like they just got off a cruise ship and have no clue where they are. Most people in Akihabara just seem to be there to check off another tourist site. Almost none have interest in weeb stuff, and the shops have changed to reflect that.

god reminds me how I hate myself for pushing my dream Japan vacation 10y+ away
always wanted to go since high school
always told myself I save money to make a proper trip someday
always though I needed to learn better Japanese

now I have the money
and the trip is booked for spring 2027
and it's the dream trip I always wanted, almost 7 weeks cross country
but
I will also have a ~6month year old kid with me, we'll see how that goes...

There's a few things in Nakano Broadway, not just watches
