I am planning a trip to Venice. How do I make the most of it? I want to stay in a decent area away from the tourist center visit less travelled places like the cemetery island, the insane asylum island, the Armenian monastery, etc. I’d also like to visit Trieste and Bologna as day trips. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I’ve been all over Italy except Venice, I chose to go to Verona and Lake Garda last time.

Nigga, the whole place is the tourist center.

Might be a good idea to stay in Mestre. It's a complete shithole BUT it's far from the tourist areas and very close to the HS train station. Which is pretty much necessary if you plan to do day trips like the ones you mentioned

I was thinking Castello or one of the other islands. I dont want to stay in a dump. I will be going with my wife.

By canceling the whole thing and going anywhere else in Italy or Europe, unironically

-99% of people everywhere in all of Venice are tourists or foreign jeet workers.
-le famous Italian food? Slop cooked and served by a jeet in a restaurant owned by a chink
-every building and road is rotting in awful condition sucking any charm out of it
-sewage canals
-grifters everywhere including over $150 for meme gondola ride on a plastic boat manned by a gypsy
-not easy to escape from when you’re lucky enough to leave the hell hole. You’re basically trapped unless you invest an hour to leave and drag your shit or hire a private boat or something

One of the worst cities ever based on what you expect vs what you get

The touristy parts of Venice are crowded because they're actually beautiful. A cemetery isn't going to wow anyone, including you.

I agree with this anon, not the whole island is a tourist hellhole. I got an Airbnb somewhere in Cannareggio, facing one of the canals but not the Grand Canal. It was super chill, there were streets that were just for locals (old italian babushkas) and you had some local restaurants were it was a lot of italians eating there.
Mestre is an option, but then you're stuck in Mestre at night, and honestly just leaving the house at 11PM and wandering the city at night is an amazing experience. Keep in mind a lot of tourists don't actually stay in the islands so the city empties out at night. It sucks because there's no nightlife, but at the same time it lets you enjoy the city in a more intimate way. I would say try to sleep in the island, if nightwalks is something you would do.
