>4 days in Tokyo>2 days in FujikawaguchikoThat's 6/14. Where should I spend the rest of the 8 or so days? This would be my second trip to Japan and I've already been to Kyoto/Osaka/Tokyo before.
I got my passport! I would like to see glorious nippon. What to do? I'm not really much of a traveler, I don't know anything to be honest. Is just Tokyo fine for a first ever international trip?
>>2899434Soapland.
>>2899426It's festival season right now, so be sure to check out the festivals taking place all over Tokyo. See the "Tokyo Event Information" section in the OP.>>2899426
>>2899426Cut out Fujikawagoochinko and do 14 days in Tokyo
>>2899437Not this shit again. A group of fake priest carry around a box scamming people for their tax free lifestyle while some duderino bangs on a drum for 12 hours a day causing road blocks. They're all literally the same too.
>>2899444You sure do hate festivals...lmao BIZARRE
>>2899449Shintoism is a shame, just like Buddhism is in Thailand. It's hard for there to be cultural exchanges/learn new ways, when governments tourism laws forces people to zoom zoom off to next location. They only want your money.
There was an earthquake in Kyushu, so please don't go there until September.
>>2899434Go on travelwiki if that's still a thing and look at the page for a city or area you're interested in and go down rabbit holes and try make a plan based on what piques your interest
I don't know does it makes sense paying 200k yen to "learn drift" in modified Miata for 3 hours? I am not rich furthermore I could spend one of my last days in Japan playing arcades or going to pinksaros. While Japanese drift cars is cool and yeah I played NFS a lot as a kid but is it not too much of a tourist bait?
>>2899475200k serves to recoup losses when someone inevitably totals a car.
>>2899451It seems like you have a pretty skewed understanding of Japanese festivals. Most Japanese festivals are organized by residents’ groups or private volunteers. Economic and cultural organizations, individuals, and local governments make donations to support these festivals, which are run on a non-profit basis. Also, many shrines are unstaffed and are maintained, repaired, and cleaned by local residents.
>>2899483Could you be more dumb.
>>2899475>I don't know does it makes sense paying 200k yen to "learn drift" in modified Miata for 3 hours?Spend 200k yen to buy your own shitbox and do donuts. It's the same thing except you get a free car
>>2899444Those guys are annoying but Japanese festivals are usually pretty sick. I like the Kodo drummers.I saw a fake Japanese monk in Munich once, he had this big poster about how awful Hiroshima was, give me money. Dude was like 50, and had no memory of WWII. Almost spit on him.
>>2899501>I saw a fake Japanese monk in Munich once, he had this big poster about how awful Hiroshima was, give me money. Dude was like 50, and had no memory of WWII. Almost spit on him.He was probably vietnamese or hmong
are there any product deals in japan these days, with the yen so weak? or are electronics and such inflating hard over there?
Anyone ever gone to a sumo tournament? I think it would be cool.
>>2899501There is a village in China that sends out fake monks to Japan and other parts of the world. They sell alms cards—which cost just a few cents to produce—for tens of dollars on street corners around the world.
>>2899531>There is a village in China that sends out fake monksAll monks in China are fake monks. All of them are government shills and they alter the meaning of religion to advance the interests of the government. Christian, Islam, all religions have official Chinese versions where the priests etc are formal government mouthpieces.
>>2899502I saw Falun gong protesting china in Munich, I asked them why they weren't protesting the Muslim takeover of Germany and they said they didn't care

Saw a guy get knocked clean out in Kabukicho recently. He didn't deserve it.
How do you eat? Every time I see an interesting place I get extremely anxious, don't even bother going in and just end up going to 7-11 instead. It has never happened to me in any other country. I think it is because of the language.Someone needs to create a map of self service places where you dont have to interact with anyone.
>>2899626Matsuya should be self-service. If I wasn't with friends, I'd usually eat in a small solo quasi-fast food place like Coco Ichibanya or Yoshinoya. It can't be that hard with google translate to just say what you want these days.

Going to Japan for the first time in November. renting a 1 bedroom apartment in Yoyogi-Uehara area in Tokyo for a month. Any thoughts on the area?

>>2899788>>2899790Unlike vacation rentals, short-term furnished apartments are designed for long-term stays. They can be rented on a weekly or monthly basis, and are 30–50% cheaper than staying at a business hotel for an extended period.

Anywhere with a ticket vending machine (lot of ramen/curry places) are basically self order, most family resteraunts will have a tablet at the table to order with.
>>2899521I was in Tokyo during the tournament and went to the building and some woman approached me and asked me if I wanted tickets (she couldn't use them or something) but I was too shy and said no thanks
I've never been to Kyushu, but planning on hitting it up on my next trip. I would have about a week to spend there, maybe 10 days, so what places should I visit while there and how long to spend in each place? I'm definitely going to at least Fukuoka and Nagasaki, but I'm not sure what other places would be cool to see there. On another note, how long should I stay in Okinawa to get the most out of the visit there? I was thinking at least 3 nights, but maybe more would be good.
>>2899837That woman was probably a scalper; you were right not to get involved with her.
>>2899839When are you going? There's still a risk of aftershocks in the Kumamoto area.

>>2899788Because it's cheaper>>2899790>You sound like a goyCorrect. I am uncircumcised498 square foot furnished apartment with kitchen for ¥350,000. I'm splitting the cost with a FWB. She works remotely and I plan to just wander the city with my film camera exploring different neighborhoods whiles she's stuck inside working. Ideally it would be nice to spend an entire month exploring more of the country especially for me being my first time there but I have a few budget constraints and I think just renting a place for a month where I can save money by cooking breakfast and brewing my own coffee most mornings will save me some money. I also like the idea of just staying in one spot to have that feeling of "living there". Once that month is up, well probably go to the usual route of Osaka, Kyoto before we fly out of there. Also, I'm open to any suggestions
>>2899788Why are people here always shilling for hotels? They usually always cost more and you don't have a reliable way to cook your own food
>>2899852December. I did read about the quake, awful news, but I imagine that the risk of aftershocks should be mostly gone after 5 months.

>>2899947Outside of retirees, nepobabies, neets and people who doing non visa extended stays with the ability to remote work from abroad; the overwhelming majority of vacationers arent staying for months and getting rentals. Most people use hotels because they're only staying for several weeks tops and willing to splurge a bit because it's a goddamn vacation
>>2899947Why would I want to cook during a vacation?

Many young female tourists in Japan, both Caucasian and Asian, wear such super short miniskirts that I don't even know where to look. Do they wear skirts that short back in their own countries? Or do they think it's completely normal in Japan because of the influence of anime?

>>2899983I was disappointed by Otaru, I spent two nights because I were snowboarding Kiroro. If i wasn't I'd just spend a night; it seems like everyone fell for the "do a day trip to Otaru" meme, all restaurants were price gouge levels expensive. Sakaimachi street takes a couple hours to go through and thats it. Id go to Sankaku market too
>>2900080Japanese girls have less girlboss energy. They don't have the feminist dream of "I'm going to settle down when I'm 42 with Chad and start a family after I become a Marketing VP exec in a prestigious high status field."However, they aren't pushovers either. Japanese girls don't date for fun, they are looking to get married before 30. Once you do get married, they expect you to be a provider. If you do not have a job, they will go into Japanese ostracizer mode and ridicule you and attack you relentlessly until you figure that out. I know a guy who got laid off, and his wife would tell their son to not grow up to be a bum like his father. They don't view marriage as a pleasure cruise you get off once it's not fun anymore. You will really have to force the issue for them to divorce you. It's not an adventure or a romantic thing to them really. It's almost like a business relationship, you and her are doing your civic duty together to raise a family. If you just wanna play Switch 2 all day, fine, but you will work and you will give her kids.
>>2900042it's Korean. You'll see those in Itaewon. Both Jap and Euro women wear them for oppa.

What are some cheaper and direct flights from Europe to Tokyo ? Or any other advice or input on flying from EU ??
>>2900098>and you will give her kids.I never want to bring another poor aspie into this world so that's simply off the table, sorry japfoids.
is osaka really the fun cheaper outgoing version of tokyo like everyone says it is? i've never been there but i met a girl from there and she was very chatty
>>2900208If you're traveling from Europe to Japan, it's much cheaper to connect through Beijing, Seoul, or various cities in Southeast Asia than to take a direct flight to Japan. This is because flights to Japan are a cash cow for those countries, as they can expect a large number of passengers.
>>2900229Osaka is mostly tourists. People see loud groups of Koreans, Chinese, Filipinos, and Indians and think "wow, all these Japanese people are so chatty!"And yes. The typical white person cannot tell a filipino or an indian from a Japanese. White people go to Asia, see non-white people, and automatically assume they're all Japanese.
>>2900098Genuinely that's how marriage should be.You work to make it work and in exchange you have a life partner who accompanies you through everything and helps you do your best, even if sometimes you argue and bicker with each other. The thought of such life is so much better than thinking I can try to do everything right, but get divorced and cheated on because I'm no longer fun enough because I'm too stable and don't do the over engineered gifts and dates that she watches on tiktok.
Welp, I finally realized my lifetime dream of travelling here. It's so much more than you guys or most of what anyone says, but also so different.I loved taking the metro, noticing the different paces during rush hour, the early morning, midday or night time. Watching the people just living their every day lives, how they're so organized you can have a zoomer glued to his phone screen playing some bizarre fighting game and still be able to navigate the bustling crowds with ease.Lining up in the supermarket at opening hour among the elders so I can shop for my supplies and food souvenirs for insanely good prices, and having to walk across a massive temple just to get there. The vast majority of girls are so insanely pretty and well dressed it's insane, I couldn't help but feel like a sweaty gaijin pig with my travel backpack, sneakers and cargo pants when sitting across them.I loved the bending machines and all the delicious snacks, I had some of the best food in my life and it was so much fun interacting with the different vendors and even trying my luck at local bars.In comparison, I disliked the most overhyped parts of it, mainly Shibuya, Shinjuku, Gion, and shops like Donki. They all felt like degenerate, Disneyland gaijin containment zones. I had so much more fun shopping at Ameyoko and Nakamise market, even though I know they're still kind of gaijin zones as well.I loved Yoyogi park, Asakusa, Ueno and I think I'll have lifetime memories from my trip to Odaiba. My only regret is not knowing conversational Japanese, because the people seem so polite, mindful and interesting, and my god, the accent of Japanese girls when they're talking casually among themselves is so hot.It makes me wanna take learning the language more seriously (and also learn to sing because they are also so good at it lmao).Anyway, that was my blog.
>>2900234The stereotype exists among Japanese people talking about other Japanese people. You would know that if you weren't a dekinai pseud copeposting from flyover>>2900241we did it reddit
>>2900241are you thinking of going there again? When I returned from my first trip I was pretty depressed and got out of it only once I booked tickets for my second trip lol
>>2900241Truly hilarious how front in center in the picture we see what Japan is truly like these days. People baseding out and thinking they're in some based trad pure Japanese homeland. But they're completely blind to the fact they're just surrounded by brown hijab wearing foreigners.
>>2900249lmao 99% of people you see on the streets in Japan are east asian, only time you see browns in hijabs is around tourist spots and they are very clearly tourists too
>>2900250>lmao 99% of people you see on the streets in Japan are east asianWow, great. You're surrounded by Chinese and Koreans.
>>2900251>You're surrounded by Chinese and Koreans.you're a never traveler surrounded by appalachians.
I’ll be going to Japan for a month next summer, should I buy yen right now or wait? It seems pretty weak but will the yen become significantly weaker in the next year? My guess is that it won’t devalue further than what it is currently at, but truthfully I don’t know shit about economy.
>>2900248I'm too fresh from the trip to be honest. Right now I mostly miss the little things, the politeness of people and having the freedom to wander the streets to wherever I feel like. But life must go on, I have to work and honestly it's also chill to be able to lay down and watch TV instead of walking 20k steps a day.But yeah, I feel really motivated to keep chasing more goals, to save up and perhaps go with friends next time.>>2900249That's honestly one of the preconceptions that got eased as I stayed there. From all the doomposting I read on the 4chins and twitters, I thought the city would be crowded with blacks and Muslims and whatnot, that I would be mugged or that I'd feel unsafe. But I honestly only encountered around 1 or 2 families in any given big location with the exception of Shinjuku and Shibuya. Lesser touristy areas and residential zones felt so calm and authentic, it truly was a blast to be there. But I guess I do have to admit we will never get to experience the Japan everyone read about from the 90s to early 00s.The tourists were definitely the rudest and biggest bummer of the trip, especially the Chinese and Europeans. But even still, I managed to have some very cool and friendly interactions with some Koreans and a guy from Congo.Perhaps the worst thing I encountered was an Indian who spit in the Hogwarts river at Universal. I stared at him with such disbelief I honestly thought he would run up and punch me.I think one can have an overall positive experience if you know where and when to navigate, because to be honest, even Shinjuku was chill in the middle of the day and only turned into a cyberpunk shithole once night hit.And now that I have those big areas out of the system, I can branch out and try more unique stuff next time, because yeah, it's very obvious even the government wants tourists to spread out a bit more.
>>2900272You should give it a shot and if next year is even cheaper, then you buy some more. Now is a very good time. Taking action is better than waiting, doing nothing and potentially fuck yourself over just because you wanted to save a few cents.
>>2900272>>2900274Id say it heavily depends on your own plans. If you are looking to be spending a lot of money on specific purchases; idk you want a handmade proper samurai sword starting at a few thousand usd, designer clothing and accessories, fancy electronics or appliances, lots of big fancy anime titty figurines, reservations for high end dining, riding taxis everywhere etc... then sureHowever; if you dont have plans on big buys, and are more looking to just wing it, wander around, check out some museums, buy some small souveniers and eat at random ramen shops at izakayas; then noYou dont wanna be left 'holding the bag' of yen to sit around until your next trip or trying to reconvert it on return. If suggest; get a travel credit card (with no foreign transation fees), and bring along your debit card which you can use at any 711 atm, just get like 30k yen (~200usd) when you land, and refill your wallet as needed. Thats how i do it. Swipe your card for attraction (museum tickets) and transport purchases (shinkansen tickets). Get a suica on arrival and put like 10k yen in it and use that to ride the trains and buy stuff at combinis. Not only is the yen weak, but even if it wasn't; things aren't super expensive in japan if you're not going out of your way to splurge, so unless you have specific pricey plans, id say just wing it with refilling your 'walking around money'I spent 3 weeks in japan earlier this year, didnt even bother to look at how much money i was spending because fuck it man im here to have a good time. When i got back and actually checked; about 1.5k; for all dining, attractions, souvenirs (not counting air travel [international and domestic] and lodging) between the travel card and cash withdrawals. But thats just me, im the kinda weirdo who flies direct business class but then mostly eats at cheap izakayas and buys fridge magnets and keychains at gift shops.

Is it possible to get like an actual English teaching job or is it all just teaching assistant type stuff?
>>2900654Best bet is to apply to an eikaiwa chain or the JET Program. The latter is a little more competitive to get into. Eikaiwa chains will have you teaching lessons to actual people. I've heard rumors of people being able to just chat with students, but it was a very rare occurrence to me.
>>2900627>>2900636In addition to hotels and ryokans, Japan offers a variety of other types of accommodations that are less well-known to foreigners, such as minshuku, B&Bs, public lodges, merchant’s inns, and love hotels—all of which are relatively affordable. Some of these places feature excellent hot springs, serve delicious meals, or offer luxurious rooms at bargain prices, providing visitors with interesting experiences.
>>2900657JET program is the JEET program now, it's not easy to get into if you're white because of how many whites wind up quitting/complaining because they expect to live in a 3 story estate and play nintendo switch while 'vibing' all day in a cool wooden japanese schoolhouse just like my persona 4 anime.they'd rather hire broken-english turdworlders because they're yes-men where the improved quality of living over whatever shithole they come from will keep them in line.if you want to be an actual employed english teacher you need to speak at least N2 japanese and have some kind of degree related to teaching. even then you aren't likely to get hired because teaching english in japan isn't actually about being good at english, it's about following the japanese curriculum textbooks enough to cram whatever is on the university exams. a westerner who doesn't know the system and thinks he's there to introduce the sopranos and avatar the last airbender to all the japanese students will only negatively impact the school's overall test results.the successful english teachers I've heard of were mostly entrepreneurs who started their own 'english teaching schools' rather than get involved with the japanese education system. not sure how they're faring now that japan raised the business visa yearly requirements from ¥5m to ¥30mil, probably not well.
What's worth seeing in Kyushu in late august assuming I'm staying in Hakata for a week. Other than Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Beppu (And everything down south cause the Shinkansen Kyushu service is halted from Shin-Minamata and Kagoshima-Chuo until September at least).I was originally planning a day in Kumamoto and another at Kagoshima, but recent news are forcing me to reconsider.
>>2900586Found the stinky chink.>>2900627It sucks, but Japan got too big with tourism, so we'll have to make do, or you can go somewhere further or newer.>>2900638/trv/ like most of the internet, is full of frustrated armchair types who have never left their basement, just take their comments with humor as if a silly little goblin was behind the other side of the screen.
>>2900685There's a cool mountain to hike up in Kitakyushu. Other than that Nagasaki is a nice city and the Peace Park as well as Urakami Cathedral and Sofukuji Temple are all worth seeing. If you go to Beppu I'd recommend Beppu Brewery for something to eat if you want to try pretty good American bar food for a change of pace from what you've probably been eating.
>>2900528afaik chinks are the only ones who wear shorts in Japan, not sure about koreans but japanese men almost never wear shorts
>>2900687Yeah, I didn't mean to imply it's no longer affordable, just the service and amenities have not doubled to double the price. As cruel as it sounds I do hope it prices out some people but as you say tourism keeps going up so that's clearly not the case.
>>2900719>>2900687>>2900658>>2900627I don't understand paying for "luxury" hotels that aren't full on ryokansIt doesn't matter if the room is just a bed and a bathroom with a fridge and a TV crammed in there if all you're doing in the room is sleeping and waking up before a full day of the actual vacation.I could afford to spend hundreds on hotel rooms so it's not a money issue for me but I don't see any value in doing that other than actual resort inns that are more expensive but actually offer something distinct from typical hotel amenities.

I will travel to Japan for the first time in a couple of weeks. Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto.I'm doing fencing (longsword) in my spare time and I'm interested in slicing a few tatami with a superior Katana.A lot of places offer "Samurai Training" for 1 hour. Did anybody here try this? Legit or tourist trap?
>>2900852It's a tourist trap for toddlers and old couples m8. They tell you the basics of samurai history, dress you up and let you swing the sword for a bit.Mind you, it's a fun tourist activity, but don't expect anything genuine or that your skills will come in useful. You better look up actual martial arts schools, hit them up by email and see if you can take a 1 day class.
The Tokyo dream isn't hitting like it used toI romanticized and idealized an image of Tokyo based off the late 90s/early 2000s film and underground music/art scenes coming out of Japan and built it up in my head as heaven on earthBut when I went and researched what Tokyo in [current year] was like I felt disappointed and my dream of moving over there to start a new life started fading away. It felt so sanitized and rigid and not what I'd dreamt ofI keep trying to get myself to stop being a bitch and just do it anyway but the harder I push myself the less I wanna do it, I think I'd be lonely out thereI'm probably just gonna go do my working holiday visa in Melbourne or something instead
Is language school worth it or should I just cram Anki flashcards and learn through consuming Japanese media and practicing convos online?
>>2900919The latter will give you more practical Japanese and is way more fun to boot.
>>2900703> but japanese men almost never wear shortsTell that to all the nip men in my neighborhood wearing them all summer, retard.
>>2900919I've stumbled upon an ideal way to learnFirst, get a hobby that's not dangerous to do while distracted. I have a home gym with a treadmill for example. Get a big piece of posterboard and just write the Hiragana and Katakana alphabets in a clean, organized way. Then you can memorize the phonetic alphabet while doing something else. From then on it's just rote memorization of Kanji and learning grammar and conjugation rules. All you need for that is a free LLM. The big ones are decent enough that they're not going to hallucinate grammar and syntax from a language with hundreds of millions of speakers. And if you doubt the LLM's output you can double check with a grammar dictionary but I've never had problems. You're not trying to get to N1, you just want to get to the point where you can use and understand basic sentences. Once you pick up enough vocabulary and Kanji to use simple "I want," "where is," "may I," etc. sentences it'll snowball and you'll develop the connections for fluency.
>>2900928>>2900935thanks anonsNever heard of the LLM method could you go into more detail on what I need to do?I already know the kana, have read and internalized 80% of Tae Kim grammar guide and probably know like 300 or so words, could I potentially become conversational in 6 months?
>>2900915That place wasn't real back then either.Or more so, that mood is something you work towards building, it's not something that'll be magically granted to you.The people that made all the cool media which made you long for that feel, were doing it to escape their mundane reality as well.
>>2900938>Never heard of the LLM method could you go into more detail on what I need to do?I do it on Chat GPT so that's what I'm familiar with. I tell it to give me sentences in a given topic like "weather" or "asking for directions" without specifying. I then reply telling it what the phonetic sound of the sentence is and what I think the translation is.So it'll spit out"犬を見ました"And I'll respond"Inu O Mi MaShiTa""It means I saw a dog"And it tells me if I'm right or wrong in the phonemes I wrote out and the definition I gave. I've learned several things like how the "O" and "Wa" particles are written with "Wo" and "Ha" in Hir/Kat by convention. It's about as good as you'd get as an introductory paid course in just learning vocab and caveman speak.
>>2900229I like Osaka because it has all the same shit as Tokyo but less spread out
>>2900947is Osaka younger than Tokyo?cos when I was looking at all the music scenes in Tokyo and current gigs everyone looked early 30s youngest but the crowds in Osaka looked a bit younger, like mid 20s or something
>>2900940very good point, thank you for sharing I will keep that in mind going forwards
>>2900852Please be very careful not to cut off your own toes.
>>2899947You are in Japan? Why are you cooking? Are you retarded?
>>2900915>>2900940>It felt so sanitized and rigid and not what I'd dreamt of>I think I'd be lonely out therethe real reason the tokyo you dreamed of doesnt exist anymore is because the world is just smaller now, everyone has the entire globe practically in their pocket, or at least the civilized globe. the transient ephemeral feeling you're looking for exists nowhere. there used to be way more social avenues for escapism than there are now, because people today can just pull up an app and talk to chatbots. even in social situations people can hardly focus on the moment. socializing has been reduced to cringey "MEET PEOPLE HERE" spaces for the 0.001% of people left who want to talk to people in person.it was real experiences and memories which inspired the art that shaped the idea you sought, and while it wasn't a perfect world at least it was real.

I'm travelling to Japan at the end of the month into early September, right now this is my itinerary. Each day has 1 core goal like the baseball game, kabuki, and concert. Any idea what I should do on that last day before heading to Kyoto? I was going to do Diver City later in the trip but the Unicorn Gundam is being taken down at the end of the month so I need to bump that up to the start of the trip.
>>2901121>but the Unicorn Gundam is being taken down at the end of the monthWHAT THE FUCKYou seem to be into weeb stuff, check out nakano broadwayIf you like military history, go to yasiniku shrine in tokyoIf you like history in general, go to tokyo edo museumThat's a days worth of stuff for ya (start with the shrine/museums and do nakano after)
>>2901121dont know what this is supposed to be. it's just random street and neighborhood names. i dont get what you're trying to do.
>>2900938>could I potentially become conversational in 6 monthsAbsolutely, but there's a difference between being grammatically correct and actually correct, if that makes sense. You should also practice with a native speaker, like on a language exchange app or iTalki where you can having a tutoring session with an amateur or professional. For example,>難しいんだったらわかるThe conjugation is "correct" as in "If that's (too) hard I get it" but it's not actually gonna be understood by a native speaker, because it's just not how you say it. The correct way is "難しいんだったらいい"If you get into the pitfall of too-directly translating English into Japanese, you'll run into many more situations where you try to say something the same way you do in English and it's just completely wrong.
>>2900272Yen craters 4 days later. Hope you didnt buy any dude.
>>2901118>flies to japan to cook chicken and riceIts not my opinion that youre wrong. Its objective reality you are a retard. You see I have good taste, therefore my opinions are correct and reflect reality. You do not, therefore your opinions are objectively falseJust like sitting in a hotel room watching movies all day on a vacation abroad is an objectively incorrect use of sometimes time and money, being literaly anywhere in Japan and making yourself a salad for lunch is retarded unless you live there long term
>>2901173On a long enough trip, eating out every meal, besides being costly, can feel gross.I mostly cook breakfasts in my airbnbs. Which is actually a good idea in Japan unless you like fish and rice for breakfast
>>2901064Your gf is cruel and that will never change. Unless you're genuinely terrified of being foreveralone you need to live your life and she either deals with it or does you a favor and leaves.
>>2901136I've got a separate list for shops and food places for all of the location areas. This is just a condensed "I'm going to be in these areas" list. I've got activities planned, just not listed. I'm looking for things not on the list or a different area to explore.>>2901131Thanks for the ideas! Anime, culture, military - I like it all. Even if there's things I wouldn't like I'd still go for the expereince.
>>2901064why do you people stick with women like this i swear you people are sexually attracted to millstones wrapped around your neck
>>2901048I did it in 2024 in Ono, mind you it was more in the summer (while the ideal is obviously midwinter for the darkest night) but you could still see a lot. I visited some dairy farm that did a paid experience with a guy giving a talk and stuff, minimum ticket order was 2 people though so I offered the extra ticket to the son of the guest house owner who drove me there and back in the evening. The most unfortunate thing about that trip though was I accidentally changed the photo resolution on my camers to fucking 2212x1408 because the touch screen was still active while it was bouncing on my chest, literally every photo from that trip is small instead of the 4k it should have been.
>>2901177Even for Japanese people, eating out is something done only occasionally, and it’s common knowledge—taught as early as elementary school—that eating out all the time carries risks such as vitamin, mineral, and dietary fiber deficiencies, as well as excessive salt intake. On long trips, it’s important to prevent nutritional imbalances by buying prepared vegetable dishes at supermarkets or cooking your own meals.
>>2900166they paid redditors and 4channers
>>2901253How midwinter are we talking? I'm planning on going in early December and staying until about halfway through January, is that a good time for stargazing? Also, if you happen to remember what that dairy farm was, I'd be interested in looking into it.
>>2901064If your partner does not wish for your happiness, they are not truly there for you. They see you as a means for their own happiness.
>>2901285>How midwinter are we talking?December 22 will be the shortest day this year in Japan, shorter day = darker night = better star visibility, especially near the middle of that night.Being like a week either side of it isn't gonna be any different though and more importantly, lunar cycle is the bigger factor. Closest new moon night you can get to the solstice will be your best night for it.As for the dairy farm, see https://darksky.org/places/minami-rokuroshi/ that's why site I used to find them in the first place. Also check out this itasha I saw while I was there.
>>2901287Oh fantastic, that lines up perfectly with the dates I was planning for my trip, thanks! I'll look into the lunar cycle too and pick out a good date, 2 week range for the shortest day of the year should give me a good amount of leeway. And thank you for the site link, I'll be sure to peruse it.>Also check out this itasha I saw while I was thereThat's awesome
HmmIt's not what I expected its more likeI thought I would be like>WOAH TECHNO FUTUREbut it's like they got to like 2007 and then said fuck it we're done advancingits like what people would be impressed about in 2007 when they talk about the futureand everything is just overlay complicated for no reasonits like a mix of the old world and the new and not fitting togetherlike being complicated for the sake of being complicatedI dunno if I'm describing it rightI'm not sure I'm digging the vibe also what a disgusting fucking heat.Feels like I'm in a florida swampland. fucking hell
>>2901306>but it's like they got to like 2007 and then said fuck itI keep seeing a lot of people saying this, but how does it actually manifest for a tourist? It's true they're not like super futuristic or anything, but I can't really think of any major way they were behind western countries, besides maybe a lot of train stations not allowing you to charge your IC card with a credit card, only cash. If anything I'm jealous of the train system they have, as public transport leaves a lot to be desired where I'm from. Generally you can pay with card in almost all stores though, and stuff like having to use a fax machine doesn't really come up as a tourist, so I'm really not sure what people refer to when they say Japan feels like it's stuck in the 2000's.
>>2901318Mostly the high cash usage and the graphic design of the advertisements and things. All of the graphics feel like they're ps2 era or something. The trains themselves are nice, but they are visibly old. If you go to the countryside the most advanced technology you will see are vending machines, and even many people still sell vegetables by just a box to put your money and a handwritten sign that says the price. The lighting is also really old fashionedIt's soulful and I love it, just my two cents
>>2900915>It felt so sanitized and rigid and not what I'd dreamt ofTokyo wasn't always like this. People are just poor as fuck right now and everyone's looking for someone to blame. Rightist blame gaijin, leftist blame capitalists, capitalists want more gaijin, it creates a loop that makes everyone mad. It was never really paradise though, but people were waaaay more chilled out 10 years ago. >>2901064I also have OCD and love Japan. Mine's a germaphobia primarily with various compulsions about doing things "wrong" (mostly action repetition correlating to intrusive thoughts about how fate will fuck me over if i don't do the thing "right")Super easy since they have wet wipes fucking everywhere and nobody looks at you strangely for wiping shit down before touching it, and nobody cares if you're a little off since most gaijin here are REALLY fucking off so they think whatever ritual you're doing is just weird gaijin bullshit. I just take cars everywhere since public transit wigs me out - idk how it is now but you used to be able to get a chauffer for $80 a day plus gas and incidentals through MK. The only things I can't do are public transit(but shinkansen first class or flying business class is fine since the issue is germs/crowds) and any sort of fine dining/omakase - which sucks but whatever. I've also been able to convince myself that boozing kills germs so I drink compulsively on flights, which has gotten me in trouble basically everywhere BUT Japan.
>>2899401
>>2901095>delete block and ghost the bitch and come back with a big titty jap waifu on your armdo this
>>2901319I suppose the high cash usage is true, you do see it a lot and if you don't have any on you, it might lead to some awkward situations sometimes. I can't really say much regarding the graphics of advertisements and such, I don't really pay attention to those things so I can't tell if they're old fashioned or not, so this may or may not be true, I wouldn't personally know. The thing about the trains being visibly old I feel like depends a lot on where you are, in Tokyo I thought the trains looked pretty new and not very worn, but yeah in the countryside I'm sure they're pretty worn down, that's true. The countryside in general being less developed is true, but to an extent I feel like a lot of countries are like that. The honor system of buying vegetables and such is very nice, I quite like it.>It's soulful and I love it, just my two centsI agree with you, the way the Japanese countryside is just works really well for me, I'm very fond of it
>>2901184>food places for all of the location areasDont adhere to this too hard; japs and dumbass tourists have some obsession with standing in lines "for that one place that was on youtube or tabelog etc..." Give it a shot, sure, but if that specific ramen shop or sushi joint has a big ass line in front of it, just keep walking, take a corner or two and you will 100% find a similar type of place in 5 min, and just go and like eat there. No point in wasting your limited time standing around for food that is in all likelihood imperceptibly 'better', which you will 100% enjoy as a foreigner. This is like coming to america and waiting an hour to be seated at chilis when there's a fuckin tgi friday across the street with no line
>not having jap cutiewhy even live
>>2901318I really don't know how to describe it well. It feels like a country that's fallen off is the vibe I have. Like I was in Vietnam and go >Wow look how much they've built and modernized While with Japan I go>Oh. Is this it? It feels like a nation that no longer wants to move forward with anything. Like the best way I can describe it is if you invented the Walk-man and then said>Yeah this is basically the peak of technology and nothing can ever top thisLike the taxi cab I entered was basically a Lada But he still ripped me off so I'm salty No fucking way a 20 minute ride is 6000 yen. Fuck you.
>>2899626I use mymaps. I have an interactive map with restaurants I've researched in advance, and they're all categorized by type of food and whether they're causal, mid level or fine dining. Anywhere I am in Tokyo, I have at least 20 restaurants to choose from that are within a 5 minute radius. I hate taking risks with the quality of the food or awkwardly ending up hogging a table for 6 by myself in a restaurant that's filled to the brim, so this has always worked great for me.
I'll be traveling to Japan in September for 3 weeks. First time traveling outside of Europe.Which eSIM would you recommend for internet in Japan in particular? I checked the archive and only found out 3 years old YouTube video.
>>2900974Because I like cooking?
>>2901359tl;dr the one available in English and can be activated before arriving. You won't have issues in any major areas with any of them. They're all the same, small providers operating using the big network infra. They get throttled in crowded areas and bandwidth is prioritized for the non MVNO subscribers. If you're that worried about it, then pick one MVNO, find out the main provider, then find their coverage map.For example, Sakura Mobile relies on au/NTT/softbank depending on the service you choose.
>>2901359I used mobal on my last trip and it was greatIt even saved my ass when i was staying at hotel for a couple days with shit internet and i used my phone as a hotspot so i could use my laptop.

Our current plan is to do the standard Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka thing, mabye for 3 nights each and then go a bit more rural the remaining days. Mabye Nikko for the autumn colors or a smaller onsen town. Also thinking about renting a car for 2 days or so to get off the train lines. I think we will both prefer more rural after we spend 10 days in big cities. Does anyone else bring headphones to enjoy some good music while walking around town???I got some older sony noise canceling that are pretty comfy but i might try to find some comfier ones
>>2901385Nikko's pretty good, check and see if any festivaly stuff is going on during your stay and try to go during it. I saw some samurai horse archery there in 2019You do you but id just base out of osaka to visit kyoto as easy daytrips since they're so close, but if you want to check out staying in more places or the missus wants it, should also be fine to stick with your original plan
>>2901387>Does anyone else bring headphones to enjoy some good music while walking around town???I use Moondrop IEMs with a Tecsun PL 398MP handheld radio
>>2901387Situational awareness is important, even some place as safe as japan; i would advise against it; cyclists in japan are an absolute menace in urban areas and you want to hear that bell the get the fuck out of the way when they're rolling up behind you If you 100% must listen to music while walking around. Id suggest not going for noise cancelling overears or in-ear buds but rather some open ear bone conduction types. I got some shokz buds and i had a good time with them on long subway trips, the shinkansen and domestic flights; yeah they're not "noise cancelling" but you crank that volume up and you can still hear every word on dialogue watchint downloaded netflix on your phone over the plane engine
>>2901442How come cycle nips don't use the roads like in every other country? Why do I have to play frogger just walking down a regular street Some of these slant eyes are riding like 25 mph weaving through pedestrians

>>2901387Walking in Shinjuku while listening to cyberpunk music was a peak experience and made that shithole bearable.>>2901442I do that back home which is a far worse place. If anything, I won't do it to be able to enjoy the vibe and sounds of the area, but if the situation arises or you have to walk a ton, it's nice.Of course don't wear turbo autist noise cancelling headphones, just plain earbuds.
Momoiwaso Youth Hostel ( 桃岩荘ユースホステル ) is a legendary, highly eccentric hostel located on remote Rebun Island in Hokkaido, Japan. What places in Okinawa are worth seeing besides around Naha, and how many days would you say is required to really enjoy the experience of having visited there? At least a week?

This is going to be a great trip lads. I barely stepped off the plane and I'm already heightmogging everyone in sight
Fucking hell is Osaka crazy crowdedEven in New York the crowds don't get as bad. Fucking swarms of people like ants moving through those shopsWhat are they all here for? There's nothing of importance other than food. Where are they all going? Why is there so many of them? I thought Osaka was going to have much less people but it feels like there's even more than in Tokyo
Ok bros I am free to travel all of August, September and most of OctoberI am having trouble deciding between going to Japan or some parts of Europe for 3-5 weeks.I suppose I have enough time for both and I have all winter to travel as well and was planning Japan to snowboardMy rough plan is to go on a 1-3 week bicycle ride wherever I go and am just torn between where to go. Thanks for reading my blog
>>2901643That’s a lot of PTO, nice man. I’d try and time Japan right because there’s a lot of tourism in some parts in October due to fall colors

The area between shinsekai and tobita shinchi is a lot less crowded and more local oriented tons of dining and entertainment options and much more 'genuine' experience imo. Also check out the aquarium, its pretty good
>>2901697> apparently I was hallucinatingI never said all men in Japan wear shorts, but the trope that none do is fucking retarded. I suppose if you’re a normie tourist and spend all your time near business districts inside the Yamanote loop where you see lots of people going to work, yeah, most won’t be wearing them. But go anywhere people actually live in summer and they totally do.

Look down on anyone who lives off eating out or conbinis, seems like a shit life. >>2902236For the South Korean government, South Korean airlines, and travel agencies, passengers transiting through South Korea on their way to Japan are highly valued customers. By setting lower fares, airlines can attract passengers who would otherwise choose direct flights to Japan. Additionally, airports offer a variety of free tours specifically for these transit passengers, and money flows to the shops partnered with these tours. Transit passengers staying for 24 hours or more can use the “K-Stopover” program to access hotels and transportation IC cards at greatly discounted rates. Furthermore, the South Korean government counts these transit passengers who pass through the airport gates as visitors to South Korea, which helps boost the nation’s prestige.

Obviously now I know that's because of the bubble era and it's basically true.Japan likes to take sensible modern things and change them for the sake of changing them just to make them different. Couple this to the culture of having to get literally everyone's consent for any tiny change and you get a country that technologically advances in one great leap once in a generation and then sits on that for twenty years no matter how ill-fitting the parts are.

With the current yen rate, would roughly 2500 USD last me 6 weeks in Japan comfortably? Assuming that flights, transportation and accommodation are already paid for. That'd give me a budget of about 60 dollars per day, and my main costs would just be food, events and whatever stuff I buy. I haven't separately accounted for transportation costs within cities like subways and buses, but those shouldn't be too bad I imagine, less than the trips to other cities are going to be anyway.

>>2902355100% doable if you dont have expensive tastes in food or souveniers. My blind spend (minus accommodation, international/domestic flights) in the 3 weeks i spent there in feb was about 1200usd from mostly eating at izakayas, random ramen and sushi places, admission to museums/attractions, souveniers (keychains and fridge magnets), cigs fried chicken and alcohol at combinis; and this wasn't even budgeted, i just kinda did whatever i wanted on a whim and checked what i owed when i returned home. That said; if your 2.5k is a hard limit, then maybe think carefully about intended souvenir or attraction spend. I am a very impatient person with cheap taste (fuck lines, dress codes and reservations), if you want fine dining or giant anime figs you can easily blow several days of your "budget" if you have an intended final spend on a single purchase

>>2902421>Beppu or Matsuyama In what ways are they different? Beppu must be more touristy?
>>2902423Not that anon but Beppu and Matsuyama are in wildly different parts of the country. Matsuyama would definitely be less touristed, but I’m not sure what he means by Matsuyama as an onsen destination. There’s only Dogo Onsen (a single place, not a town), which in my opinion sucks.
>>2902424>which in my opinion sucks.NTA but why?I'm currently planning a trip from Kobe through Awaji then Shikoku ending in Matsuyama and would like to hear why Dogo isn't good.
>>2902425The atmosphere is kind of okay, but as an onsen it’s lacking. There’s only hot water pools and the facilities feel more like your fairly typical public sento. The Spirited Away connection feels extremely weak. If you’re going to be in Matsuyama anyways you might as well go though, because besides that and the castle I don’t know what else you’d do there
>>2902426I'm planning a "hub and daytrip" style vacation where I do a city then fan out to daytrips, so I'd only really do 1-2 days in Matsuyama itself and the rest be things like Ozu and a ride on the Iyonada Monogatari.I roll my eyes at "it's just like Ghibli" lines from social media posts so if it's a lackluster onsen I'd be open to skipping it in favor of something else in the Matsuyama metro area like going east to Toon Town.
>>2902423Dogo Onsen is a compact hot spring district located in a corner of the city center; Beppu and Kusatsu, on the other hand, are hot spring cities built entirely around their hot springs.

>>2902420Since Japan is not a class-based society, there are no “high-end” tourist destinations or luxury resorts. It’s simply that tourist destinations and resort areas have both high-end hotels and more affordable ones. However, it seems that Niseko, in particular, has seen prices skyrocket due to an investment bubble.

>>2902499Even within the Niseko area, in Kutchan, both curry and ramen cost less than ¥1,000, and coffee is ¥400—in line with the national average. However, Hirafu has become a resort destination for Asians and Europeans, making it too expensive for Japanese people.
There is a possibility that a typhoon will make a direct hit on Tokyo tomorrow
>>2902522For those who haven't experienced Japanese typhoons, the whole country panics. Then you get 20 minutes of mild rain and it's over.

>>2902524I'm a long term resident and I'm just saying what happens every single time. They're always overhyped. Outside of Kyushu getting landslides, nothing ever happens anywhere else.
>>2902499It's expensive because foreign tourists like you expect high prices and you're eager to pay extra. Pre-covid, pricing wasn't like that at all.
>>2902372>40 a day for food and drinks should do itThanks, I thought so. I might splurge on one or two fancy meals throughout the trip, but it should be fine since I probably won't spend the full 60 bucks every day anyway. As for events, not sure yet, probably places like museum tickets, maybe some aquariums and such, but those are usually around 2000-3000 yen or so, so I should be more than fine. I'll be going around December-January, so if there's anything interesting going on during that time, I'm interested in taking suggestions. There's plenty of free attractions too so I'm sure I won't run out of stuff to do even on a budget.>>2902384I do like the finer stuff too in terms of food, but I can also just as well sustain myself on 500 yen beef bowls, so I think I can manage it by eating locally since the smaller spots are also usually cheaper too. Would make for more interesting dining experiences too I'm sure. I also don't even drink that much, but it doesn't even matter since alcohol is stupidly cheap in Japan so I could drink as much as I want with no issue I bet.>That said; if your 2.5k is a hard limit, then maybe think carefully about intended souvenir or attraction spendI wouldn't say it's a hard limit, I aim to keep it within that range, but if there is something special I happen to see, I do have my credit card so it's not a big deal to go a bit over budget.>if you want fine dining or giant anime figs you can easily blow several days of your "budget"Definitely, it has happened on previous trips that I underestimated my spending a little bit and had a little less at the end than I had calculated. For this trip I don't have any particular plans on what souvenirs to buy since I have a bunch from previous trips, so I should be able to save money on that. Any fancier meals I'm probably booking ahead of time anyway so I'll be able to account for them.
Huh. I just ran into ice poseidon in OsakaHow bizarre
>>2902548>>2902548>tourist>eager to pay extraThat's a lot of implying going on there my guy. I own a mansion right by a ski resort, live there there during winter, and pack my own lunch. The only money I spend on ski resorts is the one single season pass I buy every season which comes with free parking. Stay in Niseko or Hakuba, I'll keep my uncrowded home resort.
>>2902511I got curious and checked. There's one dedicated curry shop by the lifts and gondolas. Look, if you're going to order the super ultra mega deluxe executive curry, that's your prerogative, just don't whine that it cost you 3,000. I'm not saying things are cheap in ski resorts, my first point was that ski resorts are inherently more expensive, even more so in places like Niseko and Hakuba.
>>2902550>I do have my credit card so it's not a big deal to go a bit over budget.Yeah do be sure to splurge on things that are worth it like the occasional fine dining, cool souveiner and of course , a soapland( I need to remind myself to do this because I can be so frugal it sucks sometimes)An ironic ¥3000 drink at picrel bar is worth it imo

While Beijing's travel warnings reduced Chinese tourist numbers, the real damage is being felt by Chinese-run agencies, not Japanese ones. They used to run a closed loop—controlling everything from illegal taxis to hotels and shops. They even served overpriced food using Chinese staff in kimonos at acquired Japanese restaurants, ripping off their own people. With that market dried up, these shady operators are now targeting travelers from other nations. Stay alert and research before you book

Does Kyushu have enough interesting places to visit to warrant spending 3 weeks there? Or would I be better off spending less time there, and allocating more time somewhere else? I'm mainly trying to come up with a travel plan that minimizes back and forth traveling between locations. If 3 weeks in Kyushu is a bit much, I could also explore the southern Honshu prefectures for a week or two before heading to Kyushu as well.
>>2903616I did 3 weeks there in the summer. I did it as a road trip, hitting all the prefecture starting in Beppu and finishing in Miyazaki. Around Fukuoka and Kumamoto you don't need a car (and Kumamoto drivers are insane and shit), but not having a car in the other prefectures of Kyushu probably is inconvenient.I found it extremely rewarding and enjoyed the hell out of myself. Met a really swell guy in Hitoyoshi where I went for Natsume Yuujinchou purposes. Had fun talking about fishing with the owner of Takoya in Ashikita (also 聖地巡礼), Nagasaki is gorgeous, and I had tons of fun conversations in Kagoshima and Miyazaki. Food in Fukuoka everyone talks about, but the highlight for me was how energetic the city felt compared to Japan's other big cities. Everyone loved hearing about my road trip, though they did think it was odd/unusual, and I learned that (at least amongst the people I met) Japan doesn't really have a road trip culture.I think there's a lot to do, but I simultaneously didn't plan much and just picked things that caught my eye each day as I travelled slowly around the island over 20 days. If you don't know Japanese and don't have special interests in anything there, maybe you'd not enjoy it. But I really enjoyed it and definitely would return to Kagoshima and Fukuoka in particular again. Even Saga had some appeal, I went to Drive-in Torii and took pictures with some zombies. Good times.
>>2903626Thank you for the detailed answer, this is very useful. Have you ever been there during winter, if so how different is everything during that time compared to summer?>not having a car in the other prefectures of Kyushu probably is inconvenientThat's unfortunate, I'd really prefer just using public transport so I don't have to worry about having the car as a responsibility, plus I imagine it would be cheaper. Is the problem mainly traveling between cities, or do the cities themselves have lacking public transport? >I think there's a lot to do, but I simultaneously didn't plan much and just picked things that caught my eye each dayI think personally I prefer planning at least a little, like knowing what city I'm sleeping in and then looking up at least a couple spots to visit there.>If you don't know Japanese and don't have special interests in anything there, maybe you'd not enjoy itI know enough Japanese to get by in most conversations, with some machine translation as extra support if I'm having trouble. As for special interests, I would really like to see Fukuoka, and Nagasaki is also on my list of places I'd like to visit. I'm also a little interested in either Beppu or Yufuin for a hot springs visit. Kumamoto I think also has some interesting things so I'd be interested in going there, and lastly I've heard that Miyazaki is nice, but I know nothing about it. Other than what I mentioned, I don't have any particular places in mind for Kyushu, but it could just be that I don't know enough and maybe there are tons of places I would find fun. I guess part of it is also just being spoiled for choice in locations to go in the whole country so I'm having trouble choosing. Like for example, I'm weighing whether I'd get more out of 3 weeks in Kyushu vs. 1 week in Kyushu, 1 week in Hokkaido and then 1 week somewhere else.
>>2903628Also, is Tsushima island interesting? I'm kind of intrigued to visit there, but if it's boring I might not go to the trouble just for the sake of going there.
>>2903628>or do the cities themselves have lacking public transportBy the time you are in Saga/Kagoshima/Miyazaki you won't even be able to use a generic IC like suica or icoca anymore. And the public transit available is quite limited. The two cities I named are the two I'd say actually have the standard of public transit you expect from Japan. Between cities is fine, just take an express or shinkansen for the most part.>I think personally I prefer planning at least a littleIf you do your research then shouldn't be an issue, I easily filled 20 days.>I don't have any particular places in mind for Kyushu, but it could just be that I don't know enough and maybe there are tons of places I would find funAs long as it isn't your first trip, just do a little sniffing around. Plenty of anime pilgrimage locations, plenty of local delicacies (don't forget to try the 馬刺し). I think it's worth enough to recommend to my actual friends. If you do some research and think you can't actually fill the whole time, then don't do it.Can't comment on Tsushima, didn't go.

>>2903616I don't know what you find interesting so it makes it hard to answer. Yes there's lots of interesting places in Kyushu and you could probably fill 3 weeks if you had to. If you like history or the Kakure Kirishitans there's stuff to see. There's Nagasaki, the Studio Ghibli island Yakushima, surfing in Miyazakia, normal city stuff in Fukuoka, hiking in the parks and mountains, onsens. I probably wouldn't spend 3 weeks there, but I have different interests.
>>2903674>you won't even be able to use a generic IC like suica or icoca anymoreOh I see, that's a bit inconvenient but manageable, I didn't have an IC card on my first trip since they were hard to get at the time so I managed with cash. Good to know between cities is fine.>As long as it isn't your first trip, just do a little sniffing aroundIt will be my 3rd time in Japan but first time in Kyushu. Thanks for the food recommendation, I'll be sure to add that to the list. In Fukuoka at least I'm also excited about the tonkotsu ramen. I'll do some research into what kind of places they have and see about if I can fill up the days. 2 more questions, firstly, how many days do you recommend spending in Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Kumamoto? I think probably at least 2 nights in each, but maybe they're bigger than I thought. Secondly, in terms of convenience for returning back to Tokyo, what city would you recommend ending my Kyushu expedition in? I can see that Miyazaki and Kagoshima both at least have airports.>>2903870I do like history, and it would be interesting to see stuff relating to Kakure Kirishitans among other things. I had forgotten about the Ghibli island, I'm not the biggest fan but it might be interesting, thank you. What would you say is the required amount of time to get a good tour in and see the highlights? 3 weeks might be a lot, but 1 week feels like it might be a bit rushed.

Japan has to be one of the worst countries in the world for nightlife. >nightclubs are cramped and 90% foreigners>snack bars are boring as shit and full of old hags>girls bars and cabaret clubs are predatory concepts that only appeal to incel salarymen>darts and karaoke bars where staff hassle you nonstop to pay for shitty games >most of the venues that don’t fall into any of these categories consist of one guy at a bar with 8 seats and the same batch of sad sack regulars that have been coming in every night for the last 15 years>barely a dance floor in sightPlease, I genuinely want to be proven wrong. Tell me someone ITT has had a good experience on a night out that doesn’t boil down to “le epic salaryman bought me a beer and said my nihongo was jozu!”
>>2903955No you're 100% right.I'm in Osaka and every nightlife experience I've had has been terrible.Thailand was bad because of the jeets but I've never had any complaint about having fun at any barJapan is very predatory on how it handles nightlife and has a billion rules for what you can and cannot do. And the girls are basically soulless automatons and are unable to actually engage you or be interesting Even if I was an incel salarymen I still don't get what I'm supposed to get out of girl barsI dunno maybe Tokyo is better, but I specifically came to Japan to enjoy the nightlife since >Dudeeee if you have money it's like the best place to enjoy itBut I've found it feeling like some sort of corporate hell insteadJapan made nightlife feel like a jobSEA countries are infinitely better saying this from experience
>>2903955agreed 100%. there's one foreigner-owned bar in my city (not HUB) that's got a college bar kind of vibe and on some nights there are japanese people there, it's pretty much the only place i go out to regularly. on any given weeknight the clubs in my city are either completely dead - literally there have been nights where i've gone with my friend group and we were the only people there - or full of backpackers and tourists. i've been to a girls bar once and it was one of the biggest wastes of time and money i've ever experienced, i can't understand how there are so many of them. depressing shitholes. the only places i've had some success "having fun" at are rock/metal/punk bars and even that has been mostly just me chatting with other patrons about shit we like in common. i have no idea where cute japanese girls go to party at night, they either work at these venues or go straight home because a lot of these places are also sausagefests.
>>2903955>snack bars are boring as shit and full of old hags
>>2903969>>2903975ok anons, first the nips hide the best spots BECAUSE they dont want foreigners there, but yes most of the places are tourist traps, its like that in most major cities, LA NYC Berlin Londonits just a normie fueled hellhole, because they've heard DUDE YOU GOTTA GO XDDgirls bars and the like, the patrons who go know exactly what theyre getting, and they do get better service than you would get if you dont speak alot/good japanese, but yes i dont go to those eitherthis sounds stupid, but the best way to find good hangout spots is find a local friend and they basically have to take you with them, i usually have the best success hanging out with people in arcades, going to random concerts, or get an actual date with a girl and she can take/tell you wheres cool to beim not a huge nightlife persons tho, i hate clubs and drinkingif im not on a date or "partaking in adult activities" i usually just wander around taking pictures or exploring, so maybe more savvy anons have better advice

>>29039551. Night clubs are fun in other countries? I went into a couple in Japan. The first one was a meatmarket. The last time I guess I pregamed too hard because they had a dedicated bouncer standing behind me mad-dogging me. I just started talking to him.2. Snack bars are for women who aged out of hostess bars...3. Strip clubs aren't in your country? I will say I've never been roofied in my home country, but I have been shaken down for money. Burgerbros, what bank do you use to get around ATM fees when you travel to Japan? Chase has a checking account that refunds Chase ATM fees, which I presume means I'm still paying fees to the ATM's bank. Charles Schwab seems like the golden choice but I'd like to know if there's more options.
>>2904080> i'm more interested in meeting girls for one night stands and the likethen like any other first world country, you either need to pay for a prostitute or be exceptionally tall and good looking. if you were the latter, you wouldn't need to even ask where to go because you could literally cold approach or use any dating app. women today don't just go out thinking "can't wait to get hit on by 90 different ji-sans tonight in hopes i meet a nice guy!", if they wanted to fuck a random stranger there are plenty of dating apps where they can choose their chad-of-choice. hookup culture for average people is dead
>>2904080Go hunt for gaijin hunters at an Irish bar. However, while there are plenty of foreigners who want to have sex with Japanese women like you, there are very few gaijin hunters, so the competition is fierce. What's more, many of these gaijin hunters are women in their 40s who claim to be in their 20s.
I guess this is kind of an inverse japan question, but I'm putting together a selection of snacks and drinks from America for a friend in Japan and I'm trying to think of classic and unique flavors to give him from here and some international chocolate, along with other knicknacks from the PNW and CaliforniaSo far for the snacks I'm thinking>Reese's (Regulars, Puffs and Break Bars)>Gatorade Lime Cucumber>Frito's (Regular and Chili Cheese)>Cadbury's Marvelous Creations Chocolate with Pop Rocks and Jelly Beans>Ghiradelli Chocolate Square variety packAre there any other snacks or drinks that aren't in Japan that you think someone there would like? >>2904269>>2904272I'm 31 and going to language school in Japan. I have Japanese friends in their early 20s and also in their 40s. My Japanese level is barely N4. I go to the bar with this Chinese kid all the time and we communicate in broken English and talk about 三国志, and he's going to college in Japan. If you're looking to actually make friends with all age groups and have a good time, it's definitely possible. If you're looking to "hello fellow kids" your way into some college dorm to おじアタック girls, then that's not going to happen because such a party culture doesn't even exist really, people are more private than ever thanks to COVID.
>>2904319fuck I wanna do language school but my work just ended wfh. I really regret not doing this when the borders first opened in 2022.Do they ever have 2 week intensives? For a first time 1 week trip (Sunday-Sunday), is it best to stay in Tokyo or branch out a bit?
>>2904528It depends on your interests. Tokyo has a lot to see and do. I would consider a trip to Mt. Fuji or some place nearby as well.
>>2904319Which school are you going to? I'm also 31 and i'm really considering doing an year of language school in Japan, mostly because i really want to experience how it feels to live in Japan. But at the same time i do want to learn the language. I've been looking around online and it seems to be kind of difficult to find a school that actually gives a shit about your studies (as opposed to being gaijin daycare) while also allowing for a balanced social life. In fact there's just so many negative reviews for so many of the schools.
>>2904549Also, i'm still not sure as to where in Japan i want to spend that one year. I've been to Japan three times before, i love Tokyo as much as anyone else, i love how it has so much to do, i love how it makes you feel so small, i love getting lost in the crowd. I don't like Kyoto that much, and i actively dislike Osaka, just feels gross. I've never been to Nagoya but i heard its kind of boring and i've also never been to Fukuoka, but there's a lot of language schools there and a lot of people swear its one of the best places in Japan to actually live in.
