Post your travel maps in this thread. Pic related is the official /trv/ Real Traveler's map™, edition 4.0.5. I am remaking this general after almost a year of it being dead, so this is not the usual OP.

Fill in the countries and subdivisions you have visited, talk about your map and ask others about their maps. You can use the map however you like, the colors are more like suggestions, you don't have to use them, and you don't have to use all of them. You can add or remove colors and change the map as much as you want in any way you want. Don't like this map? Upload a completely different one. Up to you. Despite what some might say, there's no "wrong" way to use the map, and new posters and less travelled people are welcome and encouraged to stay and post :) This map is a group effort by our board, and we can only improve it if people reach out to share suggestions or corrections.

This is the newest edition of the map, edition 4.0.5, updated for September 2025. Thanks to an Anon in previous threads, it is now easier than ever to fill in the map. You can use the website splored.com to easily color in entire countries with a single click. At the time of making this thread, it uses the old 4.0.4 template, so you still need to update it to 4.0.5 with the simplified template, but hopefully it will be updated.

Pic rel is a simple template you can paste over your old map to update it, but only if your old map is the 4.0.4 edition. Otherwise you have to use the template in the OP.

This map comes with "DLC", which are optional regions you can add for a few select countries. It's hard to make a good Real Traveler's Map without having some regions be too small or too large, or sometimes the official divisions are not perfect for a traveler for whatever reason. Up to you if you want to change one or more countries. Feel free to add or suggest others if you want.

What counts as having visited or lived in a subdivision? Completely up to you, use your own definition.

In short, any visit of any length counts as a visit as long as you made a conscious effort to go there for touristic reasons. This excludes layovers and transits and such, but includes short visits such as leaving the airport for a few hours during a layover. For living, more than a month for non-touristic reasons, meaning you could travel around while there, but the reason you went was work or study or such.

There's also the Ultra Deluxe Autism Edition, with second level subdivisions for the USA, Canada, Russia, China and India. This was made as a one-off and won't be updated regularly. It's accurate as of March 2023, if you spot a mistake, please notify OP and it'll be fixed.
Changelog for US and Canada:

There's also this map:

with more second level subdivisions, but I haven't gone over it and can't guarantee its accuracy.

I combined it all into one map for simplicity. Link to the individual countries here:

Exploring more of Quebec next month, then France and Switzerland for New Years, all for practicing my French (among other tourist stuff.
I don't know where to go next summer though. I wanna go somewhere I can practice my Russian, but Russia is definitely off-limits for the time being, I've already been to Georgia/Armenia, and Central Asia seems more for nature while the cities aren't as vibrant or fun

>>

Hmmm, Baltics could be interesting. I've always wanted to see the hill of crosses. Where else would you recommend besides just the capitals? Is Russian even that common there anymore?
I have considered Moldova too, but other than the novelty of Transnistria, there's not much going on there.

>I've always wanted to see the hill of crosses.
It's cool but a bit of a tourist trap.

>Where else would you recommend besides just the capitals?
Maybe try Saaremaa and Hiiumaa in Estonia. Nearby Vilnius there's Trakai and the geographical center of Europe. Liepaja is cute.

>Is Russian even that common there anymore?
Not among the general population, no. Older generations will generally refuse to speak Russian despite knowning the language and it's being phased out as a subject in schools. That being said, there's a large Russian minority but it's largely concentrated in specific pockets of the countries:

Lithuania: Visaginas mostly, which is actually a somewhat interesting place to visit. Is was built as a planned city according to Soviet standards to house workers for the local nuclear power plant, and the architecture and urban grid reflect that.

Latvia: 25% of the population are ethnic Russians so you can find them almost anywhere. Riga and its surroundings are heavily Russian-speaking. Russian is also the dominant language in most of Latgale in the East of the country.

Estonia: common in Tallinn. Narva next to the Russian border is almost exclusively Russian-speaking. The Western coast of Lake Peipus in the East of Estonia also has a large share of Russian speakers. Interestingly those have been living there for centuries, unlike most of the modern-day Russian population in the Baltics that settled there during Soviet occupation. The Peipus Russians are Old Believers who fled persecution in Russia in the 17th century and have been living there since. It's a pretty unique region and worth a visit. They've got cool little cemeteries.

tl;dr, the Baltic states would not be my first idea if I wanted to practice Russian but you will find opportunities to speak the language if you're looking them. Moldova is extremely russified (not just Transnistria), way more than Ukraine actually, but you're correct, it is kinda lackluster as a tourist destination.

Can't deny travelling to certain parts of Europe at this point out of sheer vanity. Got many, many trips planned partly to fulfill this though Bosnia proves a BITCH to get through from the UK. Interestingly taking flights from Germany radically lowers the price and from Slovakia it can be as little at 7 quid! Shame you have to spend the whole day flying... and Bosnia is not the kind of place where city tourism seems that interesting.

>>2902594
Jealous of you. What places did you enjoy the most out of those you've visited? Also how did you find the contrast between living in PNW and South-east? I met someone who was forced to do the opposite move and HATED being in Atlanta, lord bless him. What locations did you visit in BC, Yukon, Alaska and did you enjoy any? How do you find PNW? I'd like to see a couple spots in Seattle and Issaquah but never thought of really going out of the way for it. Was French Guiana difficult to traverse? What parts of Europe did you enjoy most? Apologies for the barrage.

>>2900190
That's the most German thing I've seen. Congrats. Did you cycle around parts of Morocco or Tunisia? How did you not get murdered by traffic and what kind of bike would you use? Did you bike through the Eurotunnel? Also is there a reason that you didn't go to Kaliningrad Oblast? I'm aware there's some kind of border where you can temporarily cross though I haven't heard of anyone doing it. Was tempted honestly, whilst being overly preoccupied with exploring Hanseatic settlements of recent.

>Bosnia
Bosnia and Herzegovina is unironically my favorite country in Europe.
Sarajevo and Mostar are actually really cool cities, well worth your time. Be sure to do the hike to Lukomir. Lukomir itself just reminded me of the village at the beginning of Borat, but the hike there is one of the prettiest I've ever done.
Herzegovina in general has tons of cool stuff to check out, I recommend Kravica waterfalls, Pocitelj, and Blagaj monastery.
>>
>>2902602
Thanks a tonne for the speedy response. Truth be told I was tempted to leave it for an actual holiday next year and based on what you've wrote, that seems a good idea. Do have some questions if you don't mind:

1. How long did you spend in Sarajevo and Mostar?

2. Is Mostar more than 'look at the bridge them walk away' which is my biggest fear about going there. Did you see Tuzla, Banja Luca or any other major cities? It seems Tuzla gets tonnes of cheap flight routes whilst Banja Luca and Mostar seem like easy entry-points from Croatia (at least relative to most trans-Balkan bus routes).

3. Is there anything that you would recommend preparing for such a hike? Admittedly not seen Borat, but from your image it looks really nice!

4. How is travel once in the country? Are there any reliable train routes or are you largely depending on buses? I can live either way.

5 days in Sarajevo( 1 was a few hours since it was my arrival, and 1 was the day trip to Lukomir, so really 3 full days)
1 day in Mostar, but I impulsively did the hostel tour around Herzegovina since it was starting 5 minutes after I arrived, so I really only saw Mostar for a few hours in the evening. I thought that was sufficient, the area around the bridge is cool too, it's more than just the bridge but kind of small. I'm sure I could have found more to do if I spent the whole day there instead.
For Lukomir, I took the cowards path and did a guided hike, but I'm glad I did since some parts of the trail were a bit confusing. You can also drive up to it via a dirt road but I don't recommend it. But I saw couples and solo hikers doing the trail on their own so I'm sure it's doable. The start of it is literally just some grass field on the side of a mountain with a little sign saying "Lukomir this way" or something.
The village is cool, I compared it to Borat since it's very run down and old fashioned. The food at the restaurant there is incredible.
The hike is moderate difficulty, like 2.5-3 hours to get there and the same back. It's not brutal but definitely a work out. Just bring tons of water and a bit of food, then eat at the top. And sunscreen and bug spray.
There is one train from Sarajevo to Mostar but otherwise it's all busses, I had no trouble getting around.
When you're in Sarajevo I don't recommend eating anything in the Ottoman quarter, total tourist trap (though fun to walk around). The food in Mostar was better.

I wish I stayed another 2 days, I could have easily taken more day trips to Travnik, Tito’s bunker, or the places you mentioned.
So yes, 7-8 days is good.
When you're in Sarajevo definitely go up to the abandoned Olympic bobsled track, really fun to walk on, and the cable car is pretty.
Also it was 40 degrees in Mostar when I went so don't go in July.

This post is very long and rambling but I hope it helps!

>That's the most German thing I've seen. Congrats.
Thank you.
>Did you cycle around parts of Morocco or Tunisia?
Yeah. I did everything by bicycle except for the two provinces in Turkey, Northern Scotland and Dublin.
>How did you not get murdered by traffic
Traffic can be rough in places but drivers are generally not out there to murder you. I got into bike touring about fifteen years ago and have only been run down once so far, so that's not too bad. It happened in Ireland, which is also why I've been to Dublin but not bicycle. Wasn't able to do any cycling after that accident so I had to take a plane black home.
>and what kind of bike would you use?
The best one you have available. Generally any trekking bike will do the trick. I toured on a singlespeed for about eight years before I upgraded to something with gears.
>Did you bike through the Eurotunnel?
That's not allowed. There's plenty of ferry options from France and the Netherlands that take bicycles without issue though.

If you want to get really autistic about it, you can check my little touring map: https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/de/map/trips_1004538#5/48.531157/9.052734
It's somewhat of a work in process. There's a bit of trip missing in the UK and Ireland. I lost the GPS device and the recorded trip data in that accident I had, so I'll have to reconstruct the route I took based on memories and photos at some point.

>What places did you enjoy the most out of those you've visited?
I love Switzerland, Japan, and Scandinavia most. No particular order.

>How did you find the contrast between living in PNW and South-east?
The NW is way better with regard to nature and environment, whereas the southeast is good but sticky for much of the year. The people are kinda cold and standoffish in the northwest, whereas southerners are more welcoming but tend to be two-faced as well. I have family in both spots so I'm used to the dichotomy.

>What locations did you visit in BC, Yukon, Alaska and did you enjoy any?
In BC, just Hope, Vancouver, Whistler, and Victoria. In Alaska and Yukon, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Whitehorse (cruise). I really like going to lower BC, it's a great daytrip from where I live (albeit now flooded with jeets), whereas the rest are pretty far out in the woods and somewhat samey.

>How do you find PNW?
I was born and raised. Seattle proper is kind of a shitshow, but the surrounding areas are nice (albeit stupidly expensive). Issaquah is a good gateway to the mountains with lots of biking and hiking options nearby, though I'd recommend going north of the metro area.

>Was French Guiana difficult to traverse?
If you're not on the coast, you're in the Amazon jungle. It's a really small place with only a hundred thousand people, so basic amenities are somewhat less common. You get to see the legionnaires training near the space facility, which is cool I guess. I was so glad to get the fuck out of there, but also glad I get to say I've been (which seems extraordinarily rare).

>What parts of Europe did you enjoy most?
Alps and Scandinavia, basically all the mountains. Not to say that the other areas weren't cool, but I just liked the scenery of the looming mountains over the infinite floodplains. There are also fewer scheming brownoids in these areas, so maybe that's why.

>Also is there a reason that you didn't go to Kaliningrad Oblast?
For a long time you had to get a proper Russian visa to visit Kaliningrad, which didn't seem worth to me at the time. The visa was fairly expensive, a bit of a hassle to get and the exclave is fairly small. Nowadays there's an e-visa system which apparently has streamlined the process a lot, and it's more affordable too.
>I'm aware there's some kind of border where you can temporarily cross though I haven't heard of anyone doing it.
There's no such thing. If there was I would know about it. If anything, due to ongoing war there's a lot more restrictions now. Railway traffic between Poland and Kaliningrad has been suspended, only two border crossings with Poland remain operational and crossing the border on foot is no longer allowed.
>Was tempted honestly, whilst being overly preoccupied with exploring Hanseatic settlements of recent.
There's barely anything left of the city's Hanseatic heritage. Try neighboring Gdansk for your Hanseatic itch.

As far as Bosnia is concerned: I agree with the other Anon, it's a great country to visit, easily one of my favorites in Europe. The railway network is very thin but there's a decent inter-city bus network. If you can, make sure to check out Kulen Vakuf (pic related) and the Una national park. It's a stunning place.
Also the Ciro trail is nice if you want to dip your toes into bike touring. It follows an old railway line originally built by the Austrians. Part of it straddles the border of Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was heavily impacted by the Bosnian War. Almost entirely depopulated now. It's pretty cool if you're at least marginally interested in the history of the country.
Pocitelj is neat if you're in the area anyway but I'm not sure it's worth dedicating an entire day to it.
