visa and flight fees add up, you dont want to fly to asia with 1200 in the bank and then have to return with 0 after 3 months. you want to have at least 15k and then fly back whenever you get down to 5k, so when you come back you can easily slot in to whatever city is best and hit the ground running and get your money back up again. thats how i do it. even if you have no passive income thats a solid two year stint. while you're sitting there living cheaply you will likely find some way to make money and sustain yourself too

Most the time they don't ask for seeing direct funds unless you don't have a confirmed onward ticket, most arrival forms require some onward booked flight and proof before you can even board on a lot of planes these days. If you don't they will either make you book right there and then or provide onward travel at the gate. Alternatively, if you look like a begpacker and give non answers for what you're doing or where your hotel is they will ask you to provide proof.

If OP can't provide some reasonable airbnb booking and onward travel via bus/plane/etc he's going to be asked to show proof of funds for onward travel at the least, be denied on a 400/mo answer, and be back to bitching here.
