What is New York is really like? I have the assumption that it’s an overcrowded and overhyped dump. But I’ve never been there.

I went to New York for the first time a few years ago and really enjoyed it! It's expensive, and it can be crowded and trashy in certain areas. Otherwise there's so much to see and do (e.g. world class museums, food, live music, parks to sit and watch people)

It has good connectivity to Manhattan through the 7 train and rent for a room was only $800 a month incl utilities. But its sleepy out there and bad for dating. If I could do it over I would stay in Jersey City instead. The hipster part of Brooklyn is also good, Nolita is good value if you can find a room. Personally not afraid of N's so Harlem is viable imo. If you want to live around white basedboy redditors and never see N's Astoria Queens is a good pickLiving in Manhattan is important because it allows you to access all of the boroughs easily. NYC uses a spoke and wheel transit system with Manhattan as the center, so if you want to get from the Bronx to Queens you have to go through Manhattan, same thing with Queens to BrookylnSo Manhattan is a good area if you're just starting out and don't know where you'll be hanging out with or where the girls you want to date live. Most of it is stupidly expensive. After some time there you'll get a feel on the city and can zero in on more options. A lot of it is counterintuitive, you will develop friendships and affinities with people you don't expect, so it's important to have an open mind.

Manhattan has Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Jersey City all in a 30 minute radius. Queens only has itself and Manhattan within 30 mins, BK only has itself and Manhattan within 30 mins etc
