Just moved to Taoyuan. Lived in a lot of countries - 15 or so. Taiwan seems oddly comfortable. What is it about Taiwan? It doesn't do anything better than anywhere else
>Beaches better in Thailand
>People friendlier in Indonesia
>Mountains more incredible in Japan
>Cities more aesthetically amazing in China
>Food better in Thailand
It leads in nothing but feels oddly chill and comfortable. I don't want to stay here too long, I have plans for other countries but I feel like it could cling on to me.

>It leads in nothing but feels oddly chill and comfortable. I don't want to stay here too long, I have plans for other countries but I feel like it could cling on to me.
People here have the best life. Thailand is bogged down by poverty and tourism, Indonesia is crippled by Islam, China is crippled by Communism, Japan is brought down by overtourism. All of those things have heavy psychological weight and the people inevitably take it out on each other and on you
>>
>>2902269
Taiwan is a place you go to once then never again. It's the Appalachia of Asia.
>>
>>2902277
I keep going to Appalachia every month though.
>>
>>2902278
Appalachia is the Singapore of Indias.
>>
>>2902292
um no its a lot more like a "wild wild west" unless you go to the tamed bits like the smokies
>>
>>2902270
Pretty obvious you never travelled to any of these places but Thailand.
>>
>>2902328
If you think Japan isn't bogged by tourism, then it's obvious you've never visited.
>>
>>2902328
I've lived extensively in every country on the list, or a neighbor of it. You surfed with the bogans in Bali and you stared at the LED lights of Shanghai for a few minutes and you think you know everything. Those countries have structural societal issues that prevent people from being "human" in the sense that we understand it as Westerners.
>>
>>2902269
4chan and Reddit both glaze this country but I've been here almost a year now and I'm just counting down the days until I can leave.
>90% of the country is dirty as fuck and covered in mold and looks like it's falling apart and smells like cooking oil and cigarettes
>weather is fucking miserable even during winter because it's extremely humid all year round, literally can't do anything without sweating balls especially during summer
>way fewer foreigners than Japan yet people are somehow more "foreigner fatigued" than Japanese people and act like they're always annoyed by your mere presence
>scooters and cars are legitimately deadly and a lot of places don't even have sidewalks (scooters will also drive on sidewalks too btw)
>not even cheap, hotels are expensive as fuck and food isn't much cheaper
>food is oily and/or sweet as shit and portions are usually small
IDK I can go on forever but yeah I just don't like it here much at all. It's not horrible but I don't think I'll ever want to come back. I feel a bit confused though because people seem to love it here while I'm borderline miserable.
>>
>>2902371
>4chan and Reddit both glaze this country

According to ChadGPT it's the least talked about travel destination on reddit

my rent for a room in the city center of the second biggest city is $145 a month. Food is $5 a day from groceries, restaurants are $2-5 a meal
>food is oily and/or sweet as shit and portions are usually small
fat

you're fat, poor, and stupid kek what a bitch
>>
>>2902269
I was gonna write a long blogpost about my time in Taiwan(5 years) and comparing it to my life now in Japan(almost a decade) but I think it all boils down to this: Taiwan has the right blend of 3rd world soul and 1st world comfort. You said it yourself, oddly chill from the 3rd world elements and comfortable from the 1st world side.
Too much chill and you get poverty and misconduct. Too much comfort and you get a very sterile and tame experience.
Betel nut spit marks along Xinyi which is lined with luxury store fronts.
Scooter hordes but great MRT and HSR.
Stench of stinky tofu right beside the bright and shiny 50lan bubble tea.
>>2902371
I get that this is mostly rhetorical but you have to draw the line somewhere and this is just plain disingenuous.
>I just don't like it here much at all
>people seem to love it here while I'm borderline miserable.
At least you're honest about your remarks being a (You) problem.
>>
Are the small Hot spring towns worth hanging out in for a few weeks/month during winter??
>>
>>2902269
I have similar feelings about South Korea. Probably a solid B tier in a lot of categories, but very cozy in some ways.
>>
>>2902404
>b-but my cheap Kaohsiung bugbox!! everything else doesn't matter!
that's the only argument you ever have for Taiwan

It definitely doesn't have the invigorating climate that white people find desirable. And yes, people are very cold. Tired of hearing people say "whoamigod I met five friendly people out of the ten thousand I passed by, this place is so friendly!" Your sociability baseline is fucked.
>but my cheap bugbox!!
Yeah okay enjoy it. Hey my first rental in the USA was $150 per month, a cabin in the woods. But don't act like it gives you bragging rights.
>>
>>2902371
>90% of the country is dirty as fuck and covered in mold and looks like it's falling apart and smells like cooking oil and cigarettes
You're one of these people. I went travelling with a couple to Cuba years ago who embarrassed TF out if me and my gf. Always the 'eww' face and wouldn't eat the food provided by the families we stayed with. I've lived in Africa, Latin America, lots of places. Idgaf about mold on the exterior of buildings. It's a fucking climate issue.
>weather is fucking miserable even during winter because it's extremely humid all year round, literally can't do anything without sweating balls especially during summer
Yeah. Agreed. I literally just waited out the day in my apartment and worked out outside in the evenings during this summer. Pretty unbearable. But so is SEA. Again just a region thing.
>way fewer foreigners than Japan yet people are somehow more "foreigner fatigued" than Japanese people and act like they're always annoyed by your mere presence
Hard disagree here. Especially compared to mainland Chinese. I find Taiwanese people really friendly, patient and smiley towards foreigners. A couple were really kind to me yesterday when the ATM swallowed my card, another stranger offered to help this morning when I was having trouble printing in Family Mart. People are lovely here. Not quite on the level of some SEA countries but better than Korea, China etc for sure. Like I said, they don't lead in anything.
>scooters and cars are legitimately deadly and a lot of places don't even have sidewalks (scooters will also drive on sidewalks too btw)
Ok. You've got barely any travel experience. Wtf. Lol
>not even cheap, hotels are expensive as fuck and food isn't much cheaper
I've been here 4 months. I agree with you hotels are really poor value. I have just rented a very big 2br apartment in Taoyuan for 20k I'm happy with though but it's not central and is Taoyuan.
>food is oily and/or sweet as shit and portions are usually small
Agreed
>>
>>2902371
>food is oily and/or sweet as shit and portions are usually small
I only agreed because I ran out of space. Food is just ok. Portions are not small to me because I'm European and fit but you're probably an American fat shit which would explain why Taiwanese seemingly think you are gross.
>Duh portions are too small!

I think if you just lost some weight and worked out you'd have a better perspective. I think most of your issues with Taiwan are just a deep seated self loathing projected externally.

Ying wun kuh yee mah?

>>2902449
> It's a fucking climate issue.
Correct but the Taiwanese don't give a fuck about maintenance of anything and many would look a lot better if the building actually had owners who lived in it.
Investor buildings are Chinese boomer deposit accounts. They'll advertise pools/gym for their rentals but then all vote to have them closed off, it's typical Asian autism.
If you're ever going to rent in Taiwan always ask and check how many rentals compared to owner occupied.

>>2902371
> a lot of places don't even have sidewalks
The main thing I see with people who didn't like Taipei is that they refused to stay anywhere outside of the most expensive real estate prices on Earth in exchange for 20 minute commute. They think they can live in the middle of a massive city right on Central Park for Bangkok prices.

Amusingly most long term monthly rental people in BKK stay 25 minutes out on the Sukhumvit line but don't think twice about that.
New Taipei is superior unless you visiting for only a week, even end of the line in Xindian is quick as fuck into the city center.

>muh sidewalks
pic related is literally the sidewalks where I live

Go to Christian Indonesia (Philippines) and tell me that with a straight face. Islam might actually be doing this place a favor. I can walk out at night in Indonesia without getting robbed. I don't even get asked for tips here. Amazing place. Also it's cleaner here.
>>

You had me until the last sentence. Indonesia is filthy. People just throw garbage out on the street everywhere. It's just as bad as the Philippines or India. Zero difference.

I love Indonesia. I speak Indonesian but Christian Indonesia isn't the Philippines - it's Sulawesi, the Muluku Islands, Sumba. And Indonesia isn't as safe as you think. Enjoy your first day in Bali, midwit.

Cuba is one of the poorest countries on earth and can't even import fuel. What's Taiwan's excuse for being more grimy and filthy than anywhere else in East Asia? And why do you tolerate filth so much? It could only be because you're Indian.

I'm white and I tolerate scruffy looking buildings because my ancestors were warriors and colonizers who spilled blood to take foreign lands for power and glory. I've also lived in far far more dilapidated countries in Africa and Latin America. I enjoy the constant reminders of being far from home through all my senses. It's a part of European epigenetics.

because you are boring and taiwan is boring you feel safe and unthreatened. you don't need to compete with anyone or anything because everything is mid and you can relax into the non-challenge. convenience is everywhere unless you have some trash and nothing is elite so you do not think about levelling up or whatever people say these days.
it is a non place for a non person.

they just have a general bad attitude. you think it is because you are a foreigner, but they would have that attitude with locals who are unknown to them. everything is a burden for a taiwanese person.
>>

So when are we having a meetup at Mountain and Sea House or Le Palais anon?
>>
>>2902525

Yeah pretty sure it's not that. Like I said, I've lived in many different countries in Africa, Asia, M.E., Lat Am. Or maybe you're right and I just like the chill, maybe I am getting boring. I've just been traveling for 18 months and it was insane and intense and I've been trying to pump the brakes all year and shit had just been wild. Maybe I like the stability. Maybe it is boring. Maybe I'll get bored after a year and leave. Not saying you're wrong.
>>2902527
>they just have a general bad attitude
I have not experienced this from anyone even once in 4 months. What's going on with you? Give some examples
>they would have that attitude with locals who are unknown to them. everything is a burden for a taiwanese person.
It sounds like you're not having a good period of your life in general. I don't know why we have such wildly divergent experiences. Are you sociable? Do you naturally smile and engage eye contact? Are you tall? Because it's 'yes' for all these for me and shot is lovely here

Are you obeseanon here: >>2902371. ?

Don't mean to be rude anon but I think the problem here isn't Taiwanese bad attitudes, it's that you're a fat shit. Drop 200lb and come back when you can walk. If you're zipping around on a mobility scooter, sweating and smelling sour in this heat, there really is no way to enjoy life anywhere I would say.

You thought this was an epic gotcha. If you want to present yourself as a PhD in Reddit studies, I will concede as long as you go back. AI is retarded because it is trained on Reddit. I'm not going to Reddit just to BTFO you so I phoned a friend. If there's one thing AI is good at it's telling me what Reddit thinks without me having to go there. >>
>>2903754
>Melatonin is the only thing I would like to see OTC in Taiwan
I know two little family run pharmacies that sell it. One in New Taipei and one in Taoyuan. Ask around the little decrepit pharmacies enough and you'll find one that sells OTC. Either that or ask me nicely and I'll share the Google map location

It is really nice going for a swim in that weather, though, I'll give you that.
>>

guess it depends where you are, it takes me a while before I start sweating it up, then again I should probably hydrate more
