Big Springs is pretty blown-out, like prosperity packed up a long time ago and left it to wither away under the desert sun. The state park in town is scrubby and sweltering but still tranquil. 98° sunshine feels fine on this Texas summer day, though most people stay hunkered down in the A/C. Glad to get one last experience in the western drylands before continuing on to the humid Southeast. America's diversity gladdens me. It would be so dull for everyone and everything to look similar. $14 for this plate of Mexislop with two flour tortillas seemed like a good deal. The three of us had quite a night out, hitting up the bars before heading to a relative's house to do some more drinking and smoking and powdering of noses. There was some kind of drama going down, but I got left in the hotel room while they went out to break up a fight or something. Apart from one bar charging us $12 each for tiny shots of awful tequila, we had a good time. The morning hangover was brutal. A jeeta housekeeper walked into the room at 9:45 am and told me checkout is at 10. Annoying. Overall I kinda liked Big Springs, for a west Texas shithole it was more appealing than I expected.
I harvested a nice sack of ripe prickly pears from the park cacti in Big Springs. Jesus there were so many, and they were so sweet and refreshing. Beats me why nobody else is harvesting them. Are the little prickly hairs that much of a turnoff? Every time I handle one I get hairs poking my fingertips. Slice in half lengthwise and scoop out the inside with a spoon - that's the best way I've found to enjoy them.
Driving 400+ miles across Texas the morning after a big night out was very tiring. I had to pull over and nap for two straight hours, falling asleep in the driver's seat and then jumping awake wondering how the hell I ended up in somebody else's car on the side of the road in nowhere Texas. Oh shit did I fall asleep and wreck? Amazing how sparsely traveled the route I took was. Texas has so many counties with barely any population, even as its cuties continue to balloon.

The neighbor's sad old horse. She divorced her alcoholic husband, he took the back half of the property, got electric and water hookups, then parked an RV trailer out there and spent the rest of his life alone in the woods. We went back there through our property and marvelled at all the stuff left behind. Even a fridge full of unopened beer cans all ruptured from the freezes. He built an outhouse with a flushing toilet and lived amidst all his stuff from the house. Evidently he died a decade ago and nobody had come by since.

The hostel neighborhood is really pretty, a far cry from the hideous miles of sprawl and blight surrounding the city center. It seems cleaner and better-kept than Dallas. Metro daypass costs only $3. The sun is blazing with fury, but now that lunch is finished I'm ready to head out and see some city. Had a long talk about US travel plans with a Costa Rican on his Texas vacation; he shared some of his delicious beef linguini with me. Turns out it is legal to crack a beer in most Texas city parks. We both assumed it was illegal until I did some research.

Great sunset on the Lake Charles waterfront. The shrimp poboy tasted good for the first couple bites, but then the spicy greasy breading and globs of mayo began making me feel like a goyslop muncher. Maybe I'll get some real food in NOLA, though the high tourist demand means they ream you $30+ for any crawfish dish around town. New Orleans feels much larger than its 400,000 population. But the city doesn't feel Big Easy at all. So much neuroticism and mental instability here. Everyone local edgy and on guard, the few tourists obliviously prattling away and enjoying their summer trip.
I passed through some young hoodlums congregated by a bus stop, all kinds of sketchy activity like business was going down but they only looked past me when I walked right through their group. Don't fuck with the tourists, that seems to be the local rule. Two hours before arriving I took a tab of acid on the bus, but it didn't make me paranoid. Rather it was fascinating to seek out a glimpse of everyone's souls, and also to see them all shy away from me for some reason.I did meet one friendly local, an old fashionable black man drinking beer on the riverfront while his half Russian son played in the park. The afternoon humidity boiled up into thunderous clouds which played over the river in the light of the evening sun. Quite a beautiful sight with all the riverboats going by in this place where the entire American Midwest civilization coalesces into a single channel on its way to the sea, flowing nearly 200 feet deep.
There were a few cuties on Bourbon Street, but crowds were - no exaggeration - barely 10% of what they were on my last visit in March 2021. Dead streets have been a theme on all this trip; everyone is stroogling with bills too much, they spend their after-work evenings vegetating in the living room with no energy or enthusiasm or funds to go out on the town. Despite the sparse turnout, the local radio station listed over a dozen bars hosting live music tonight.
The HI hostel downtown is also very anti-social. Unlike the homey ambience of the Houston hostel, this place feels completely institutional, cheap housing for five hundred plus guests in dozens of dorm rooms. Friend groups chat with each other, but everyone else studiously avoids even looking at their fellow guests. My friend Randy said to sprnd money in New Orleans, so I had a gumbo dinner at a bar. $13.75 after tax and a 53 cent "supplementary fee". The bar matron had a giant pair of knockers squashed down by an industrial-strength elastic apparatus, and she was just as tight-strung and unsmiling as you would expect for a woman wearing duch a horrible boob prison. The barmaid kept flashing a huge fake smile hoping I would start drinking, but when the gumbo came without the chicken it was supposed to have, I complained and the smile went away. Doormen tried to solicit me and other passersby into their bars, even whistling and shouting across the street - friendless and distrustful of ripoffs, there was no way I could sit back and enjoy a drink. Anyway, I stopped here not to have fun, but because New Orleans is where the Amtrak Crescent departs for the East Coast at 9 AM. My next two rides to Mississippi and Alabama will be on this train starting tomorrow.

Meridian looks slightly Appalachian with the low green hills to the west - some of which are criscrossed with forest trails -and the flowing creek running past the edge of town. The downtown transit station is very nice; the streets nearby have gotten a good facelift as well. I hoped to chow down on a big plate of crawfish for lunch at the Cajun place, but crawfish are not available in August.
I fucked up booking the Motel 6 here. Somebody bombed out their room and now the whole place is shut down. Nothing to do but book a different place and hope Super.com gets around to refunding my money. Bargain-priced as they are, I doubt they have much in the way of customer service.
Sadly, most of the old train station hotels in America - advertising rooms starting at $1.00 per night - have either gone out of business or become boutiquified, with nightly rates never below $100. That's some serious inflation right there.
New Orleans' city of the dead and the vast expanses of Lake Pontchartrain were the main highlights of a train journey which spent the majority of the time traversing the barely populated backwoods of the Deep South interior. Laurel, MS could've been a good stopping point. But while I do want to see more places on any journey, the high price of lodging limits the number of overnight stops in practicality. This 97° humid heat is fine for walking around, like a hot day in Malaysia or Thailand, but it's too much for sleeping outdoors IMO. Plus, the ants bite here. No longer can I plop down in the shady grass without a care, indifferently flicking curious ants away.

Pretty scenery amidst steep forested hills, and the Walmart was right on the way back. Drivers around here sure aren't used to seeing people walking in the road. The Mississippi woods after a wet spring are unbearable with pests, but in the dry dog days of August there is only the occasional gnat. Apart from the hotel debacle, this was a good stopover. Best part is the 1 PM departure tomorrow. Leisurely departures are the key to avoiding travel burnout even if you are going someplace new every day. Man I wish I could've stopped in Tuscaloosa instead of Birmingham. Downtown looks so nice, and the college girls are famously gorgeous...but the hotels there were either out of my price range or 5 miles from the city center. Supposedly there are city buses, but the routes do not show up on Google Maps transit directions, so IDK if they are even running. Some of these small city bus routes are so poorly managed as to be unusable for travelers. Even as a bus traveler, it's clear that some of these routes are a big waste of fuel and government resources to transport maybe one or two people per hour.
Gigantic orb weavers string their webs at face level in these forests. Microscopic tick nymphs waiting on overgrown trails eagerly burrowed through my thick socks; I took them off and wondered at all those dirt specks dotting my ankles. As if the goddamn weeklong itching flea bites from my brother's house are not bad enough. Ironically I had no itches or rashes during my rough sleeping days in Colorado. Even the few mosquito bites didn't bother me; itchy balls were no problem either, just squat down and rinse them off. But ever since I headed east it's been constant discomfort, with sweat rash now being added to the mix with these 108° heat index days.

View from the fourth floor of the Kings Inn. For the discounted rate of $67.50 per night it's pretty nice. I walked downtown to get an IPA and some battered cod fillets from the Publix; the city has kept up its old glory quite well, though Friday night traffic was awfully sparse. An older black dude accompanied me back to the motel asking me for some money to buy weed, but I already learned my lesson about buying on the street and refused him. He was the first American on this trip who befriended me for the sole purpose of soliciting money. Overall Birmingham is boring like most other American cities, but I must've missed the bar area which is across the tracks from where I'm staying. With an 11 AM bus departure for Atlanta tomorrow, I can feel free to wander the nighttime streets and sleep in til 9 tomorrow...the only way I ever want to travel.

It's worth noting. If you do come to travel the US and want to stay in budget hotels, expect the WiFi to be fucking worthless at many properties, either weak signal, turtle-speed bandwidth, dropping out entirely or losing Internet access every five minutes. Spending $10-15 extra per month on that unlimited data plan seems like a good idea. As for me I'm fast approaching my 4.5 GB high speed data limit...after which I think I get downgraded to 120 Kbps speeds.
Goodbye Birmingham
Gadsden, AL looked like a really nice town amidst the lakes and hills, with an impressive river flowing thru town. The chunky girl next to me on the bus tentatively struck up a conversation and we chatted for most of the rest of the ride.
Anniston was less affluent than Gadsden, but man I wish I could've stayed there and gotten a taste of rural Alabama. Lovely hills with nature trails right next to town. Sadly, the only motel near the train & bus station has been converted to rental studios. The stately Hotel Finial is a real classy old mansion of a place on a hilltop right in town, but the $130 room rate was out of my budget. All the budget properties were 4 miles away down by the interstate exit...a very common problem for foot travelers.
Instead of leisurely trekking across the Alabama hills, I'm spending a night in a cheap sharehouse in the South Atlanta 'hood. My room cost $43 after tax on Booking.com. The neighborhood isn't horribly decrepit - some houses are pretty nice - but there are a lot of homeless and ghetto characters wandering around, and rubbish is plentiful in the vacant areas. There seems very little to appeal to the traveler in the area. Even the public transit is barely usable, requiring me to walk the 2 mile distance from the bus station. I didn't even get a view of the Atlanta skyline along the way. Granted, Atlanta is far from exorbitant. A poorly rated room in an old downtown skyscraper can be booked online for as low as $83 after tax, but I still balked at that figure and chose this sharehouse instead.
Man do these ATL blacks love their weed. Chick staying at this sharehouse basically lives on the porch puffing on joint after joint. Everywhere you go you're walking through a cloud of weed smoke. They even have private 420 lounges operating openly in the city. Puts California to shame. On the plus side, it means most of the blacks you encounter on the street are pacified. Police presence is minimal. I think they only respond to calls. There is a lovely rail trail running across the southern suburbs of the city; alongside, a huge old factory complex has been converted into a commercial center with bars and food courts and little shops operating out of shipping containers. You can tell a fuckton of money was dumped into the project, most of which is geared toward celebrating black culture. Of course this is the urban South; the liberal whites all pride themselves in their anti-racist behavior, though few choose to live in the black neighborhoods. While a little dirty and full of prowling characters, this south side is probably one of the most beautiful and desirable black neighborhoods in America. Most of the houses are well taken care of, though a few are gutted or burned out. As far as the women, most are landwhales of course, and the young mulattos with big frizzy hairdos and tight fit bodies all strut around like they's queens, usually with a prosperous older black man by her side. Mixed race couples do exist but remain a small minority of couples.A bunch of liberal whites with a few black friends were celebrating something in the park. They are all about body positivity and creative expression, so their appearance did look rather weird. The chicks were pudgy and pierced, and the guys were all either soibeards or dorks. Also I saw two big muscled black men tenderly making out and petting each other in the west end parking lot. First time in years I have seen open gayness. Any kind of public friskiness in America seems rare, especially compared to LatAm.
Atlanta does have some pretty public spaces, like the hilltop forest park I stumbled upon walking back from the laundromat yesterday, or this "Underground" city plaza. But there is also plenty of vileness. Walking to downtown I passed three piles of human shit swarming with flies, in addition to countless piles of strewn rubbish. The worst was some explosive diarrhea which had hit the back of a bus stop pavilion and flowed down into a pile. The smell of it baking in the summertime warmth had me choking. There are very few benches downtown, and evidently no bathrooms either. So the homeless - which are 95% black - sit and shit on the ground like dogs. What started off as an adventure of rediscovering the grand spaces of America as a vagabond fizzles out in the hypernormie sprawl of a South Carolina shopping district six miles from downtown Greenville. (Yes there are city buses, but they don't run on Sunday.) Sitting here on a bench outside Waterburger with my bottle of wine on a lovely cool summer evening. The generic plentifulness of these East Coast landscapes and people is tough to accept...why even travel when every place feels much the same as the other? It was nice seeing all the pretty white women shopping at the Trader Joe's, looking like an entirely different people than the dark, slovenly, obese characters stepping off the Greyhound at the corner gas station nearby. Tolerance always results in weariness, disengagement from unnecessary interpersonal interactions. And it goes both ways; all these brown and black Americans are also very weary of white people and the white ways of doing things. The end result is a society which is safe for all but also soulless and alienated, everyone carefully maintaining social distance from the alien strangers around them. As diversity becomes ever more diverse, the disconnect between parallel human experiences will grow harder to bridge; the only solution is to stop caring about anyone but yourself. Most people trust the system to enforce behavioral norms which safeguard their persons and property; unlike genuinely dangerous countries, people here in the USA are not constantly on the lookout for threats.
$51 after tax for a room here; with occupancy lower than it has been in years past due to a sluggish economy and lower foreign tourist arrivals, I have been able to get sizable discounts on most rooms on this trip. But comfortable as they are, American motels are also depressingly uniform, large and impersonal. They are always located in places with heavy thru traffic, meaning your presence as a traveler passing through is wholly unremarkable to the people you meet. Of course, when you are free to wander where you please in a state like Colorado or Washington instead of making a beeline from Houston to Raleigh, you will be able to escape these kind of places and chart your own adventure. But most USA travelers have their sights set on traveling overland to distant destinations, forcing them to follow the herd along the beaten paths. At least the goyslop is good if you got the goybux to pay for it: there are literally 20+ restaurants serving everything your tastebuds can crave within walking distance of this shopping district. Go off the beaten path OTOH and you're stuck cooking your own slop.

Last year I worked for four months, spent two weeks visiting family, and departed the country $6700 in the black. Not quite the $8000 I was aiming for, but it wasn't too bad. Eight months of overseas travel deducted $6200, six weeks of US travel $2300. So now I am $1800 poorer than when I started working 13½ months ago. By no means is this a state of desperation, even though I have no fucking idea where my next dollar is coming from. Being "brokie" i.e. frugal means that I have enough in reserve to embark on another full travel season in the impoverished countries I prefer to explore. However, as the travel fund dwindles toward the $10K fallback line, the pressure will build to line up a solid seasonal job for 2027. Alaska at last. It's about damn time.

Took a nice lazy Sunday walk through the countryside near my mom's house, which is located in the ancient Piedmont hills of central NC. It looks pretty idyllic, greenery and ponds and quiet little curvy roads and and houses of every size - some areas are gigarich, others are white trash. 4 out of 5 dogs were hostile; nothing was built to get around on foot. People were also weird and withdrawn, like white people in these eastern hill regions always seem to be when somebody comes walking through their village on foot. You'd think a balmy summer Sunday would mean carefree happiness, but no. Scowls were much more common. Lots of young guys driving around aimlessly revving their loud vehicles.

Lousy car-centric infrastructure is the norm out here. I hate these four-lane zero shoulder highways in particular. A hundred million dollars worth of recently constructed luxury real estate is accessed by a narrow two-lane state road lined by old wooden telephone poles that has received zero upgrades in decades. Where do all the steadily increasing property taxes go? Homeowners always wonder the same thing. So much taxes, so few improvements.
The $600 price tag for one week of utterly mundane and unremarkable travel across Southeastern cities has really turned me off to further car-free trips in the region. This of course means that I am stuck living with family for the time being...not too bad to take a break from movement after so many months of travel and focus on accomplishing home improvement projects, but why can't they live somewhere that is less of a soulless mall & sprawl landscape? At least the stay will help bring my US daily average down.With my flight from Miami to Peru departing November 1st, I plan to spend at least a week down in Florida. The country's cheapest hostels are found in Miami, and October is a slow month in South Florida, so I can expect very low prices for a bunk even in Miami Beach.

Decided to cancel plans to explore the US further and bought a vacation-style three week trip to Costa Rica instead. $310 airfare spread over three weeks is only $15 per day, negligible compared to the huge fucking costs of travel in the US. Besides, I've never been to Central America before, so I'm looking forward to seeing the rainforest greenery. Return to the USA will be a week before my departure for Peru, with an overnight Amtrak journey to Miami plus two nights in some shitty hostel down there wrapping up my US travels.
