Instead of listing things they do have, I'll list the things they do not.

They don't have: A refrigerator, a stove, mattresses for their bed, a television, an air conditioner, an electric fan, a washing machine, a toilet that flushes, a television. Their house consists of a bamboo wooden frame reinforced with scrap metal, and a dirt floor covered by empty rice sacks. The kids (7 under the age of 14) have no toys or books to speak of, other than whatever we have thrown away. The kids have no shoes other than broken, 50 peso flip flops. Their daily meal consists of plain rice with shrimp paste, plain rice with instant noodles, or plain rice and junk food chips. The kids have never been to the movies, never been to a swimming pool, never been to a restaurant (not even jolibee). The eldest son consistently got into trouble in the neighborhood for "stealing coconuts", and the mother basically abandoned him back in her home province to fend for himself at the age of 15. The mother has offered to basically give her eldest daughter to my wife and I as some type of indentured servant, to which I refused because I don't want to live with an unrelated minor female for obvious ethical reasons. The father supposedly works in Manila making what I presume to be minimum wage, about 500 pesos a day, if he manages to work that day. If he sends home 10k pesos a month I would be extremely surprised

How long is a piece of string?

First of all, cocaine is hard to find in the Philippines, as it obviously has to be shipped in from South America and their isn't really a market in the Philippines for coke...people usually use meth if they want to get up. Philippines if anything, is used as a transfer hub for coke going to Australia or Bali, with some residual bits and pieces being left over for local consumption. So a very rough estimate is about 410k, might as well round it up to 500k to account for miscellaneous things, which at today's conversion rate is about 8500 USD. You could do a lot with that, sky is basically the limit. You could theoretically have a compound with your own harem of peasants for that amount of money every month....people have done it before

Is that actually representative of how some people eat, or is it more of a stereotype that gets portrayed in media?

I also don’t really agree with the idea that Filipino food is inherently “bad,” as I’ve sometimes heard people say. I wonder if part of what influences perceptions of Filipino food is the fact that many people grow up with limited incomes, which naturally restricts what kinds of ingredients and dishes they can afford to experiment with. If you grow up eating simple, inexpensive foods like rice, canned fish, noodles, and fried chicken, those foods are naturally going to become familiar and comforting.

Went back to the PH for a quick 12 day jaunt (really 11 days since the 12th day was mostly travel). I regret moving away from that country everyday lol. I make 4k USD a month passively but some bad debt (35K USD) made me take a high paying job back stateside (boosting me to around 10k USD a month) but honestly I think I'll work it long enough to pay off my bullshit just to go back. Everything there is just so much better. Without giving too much away I worked in the nightlife industry- e.g. hosting events for hostels, nightclubs, bars, etc. I wont go too in detail for sake of my identity as I was based in Boracay and am fairly popular from my time there. Like I stated before my income was fine (4k passive) so the 18k PHP monthly wasn't really that much of an issue (I worked for one company that had contracted events with multiple nightlife oriented businesses). We served mostly the younger foreign tourist crowd though we also drew in lots of Filipinos as well as the occasional famous famous Flip. Since I was their main social guy I worked closely with a handful of people and have been on some streams, some marketing stuff, etc. I suppose the main perk of it was it enabling my alcoholism and being able to meet very interesting people alongside that- and trust me the pussy was ever flowing. When you are playing the role of a super charismatic person (the job was really just sales at the end of the day) it isn't hard. But it still doesn't really fill the void. Believe me or not I don't care.

If your buddy is interested in it the best thing I can recommend for him is to just volunteer at hostels in the PH, probably in Siquijor or Siargao if he can stand the Israelis. I only got the job because I'm a smooth talker and a fun alcoholic (also met the right people) so if your friend is a dribbling socially awkward idiot he will not be able to do this.

this. Also is big enough you can head to north of the island and escape a lot of the nonsense if you just want to chill in rice patties. If that is too much there are ferries/flights to neighbours like Flores and Gilli which are more of a different slower vibe. I really dug Labuan Bajo when I was there a few years back. Beautiful harbour area for sunsets, can hire boats to see the dragons and beaches, also lots of hiking areas in and around with some great views.

Why are there kids standing around fast food places at 2AM wide awake? Shouldn't they be getting sleep in for school? ffs I just wanted a late night snack and was bombarded with kids asking me for food and pisos. The cops didn't seem to care a bit, if this was back in Orange county cops would have swarmed the place demanding the kids call their parents to go back home to sleep.
